  • November 2012 Chicago IT Architects Group Meeting Recap

    So the year is coming to an end.  A hearty few came out two days before Thanksgiving to discuss adopting agile in the enterprise.  While Norm Murrin claimed to be nervous about talking in front of a group your wouldn’t have known by his presentation.  He really made a topic that has always been hard to relate very personal.  This lead to some great discussion.  I came out of looking for ways to investigate agile further.  His presentation can be found here. This was our last meeting for the year.  We are looking forward to next year and are starting to line up some speakers and topics.  At this point we have an Azure presentation coming in February and are ironing out talks for January and March.  If your would like to join us and have topics you would like to see presented contact me through this blog.  Either leave a comment here or use the contact page.  I would love to hear from you.   • JCP.Next.3 working group meetings have begun

    As mentioned in the blog earlier this week, the third JSR in the JCP.Next effort, JSR 358, A major revision of the Java Community Process, was approved by the JCP EC to continue development earlier this year.  This JSR will modify the Java Specification Participation Agreement (JSPA) as well as the Process Document, and will tackle a large number of complex issues, many of them postponed from JSR 348. For these reasons, the JCP EC (acting as the Expert Group for this JSR), expects to spend a considerable amount of time working on this JSR. The JSPA is defined by the JCP as "a one-year, renewable agreement between the Member and Oracle. The success of the Java community depends upon an open and transparent JCP program. The first EG working meetings have started and  meeting materials and minutes are available on their Java.net project. Last week an IP Working Group commenced and their meeting minutes and materials will also be available in this location; they anticipate meeting on a weekly basis moving forward.  Also see the JSR 358 issue tracker on java.net.  Right now there are 45 issues being discussed.  Join the JSR 358 java.net project to keep up to date on the latest developments.

  • why it is not possible to modify file in a directory, where i have read/write group rights

    I am currently messing around on my linux system and now i have the following situation. The directory /srv/http has the following permissions set: drwxrwxr-x 2 root httpdev 80 Jun 13 11:48 ./ drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 152 Mar 26 13:56 ../ -rwxrwxr-x 1 root httpdev 8 Jun 13 11:48 index.html* I have created the group httpdev before with the command: groupadd httpdev and added my user sighter with: gpasswd -a sighter httpdev Then i have set the permissions as above using the chown and chmod commands. But now i am not allowed to modify the index.html file or create a new file, as user sighter ,with touch like that: <sighter [bassment] ~http> touch hallo.php touch: cannot touch `hallo.php': Permission denied What do I understand wrong. I was expecting that i can do what i want there then the group has all the rights. The following Output is for your in formation. <sighter [bassment] ~http> cat /etc/group | grep sighter ... httpdev:x:1000:sighter ... The used linux-distro is archlinux.   • How do I enable the confluence-users group?

    I've got an issue with Atlassian Confluence. Normal users can't log in, but administrators can... Details below! I manage users using an Apple Open Directory (LDAP). I created two groups: "confluence-administrators" and "confluence-users". I've added team leaders and managers to both groups, and I've added some users to "confluence-users". Everyone in "confluence-administrators" can log in easily. People in "confluence-users" can't log in at all. When I look at the user list (in Confluence), and select a user to examine the list of groups he or she belongs to, I can see that the Confluence Administrators are indeed members of the "confluence-administrators" group, but not a single user is a member of the "confluence-users" group. Not event the Confluence Administrators, which are members of both groups! So I tried to have one of the "confluence-users" log in while watching the Confluence logs. Here's the result: 2012-07-05 14:50:19,698 ERROR [http-8090-11] [core.event.listener.AutoGroupAdderListener] handleEvent Could not auto add user to group: Group <confluence-users> is read-only and cannot be updated at com.atlassian.crowd.directory.DbCachingRemoteDirectory.addUserToGroup(DbCachingRemoteDirectory.java:461) ... So it says the group group is read-only... I'm not sure why it is a problem. Well confluence-administrators too is read-only and it doesn't complain. Some things I don't think are part of the problem: I've synchronized Confluence with LDAP many, many times. I have verified many times that I didn't make a typo while setting the groups on the LDAP server. LDAP synchronization goes well. No errors in the logs (only INFO level log messages). The user exists. Errors in the logs are different when a user doesn't exist. Any help is most welcome!

  • Freebsd Secondary Group not allowing folder deletion

    TLDR: I have a user that is a member to a group as a secondary group. This user can delete files with 664 perms as a secondary user, but not directories with perms of 775. Details: I have a user. Lets call him ftpuser. I use him to upload and download files to my devbox. The user's primary group is "ftp" and is also in the group "www" as a secondary group. My web server runs as user www and group www, and I have proftpd (running as www and www) configured to drop all files into the needed directories as www and www (for file ownership) and perms 664 on files and 775 on directories. My problem is (tried with 2 ftp clients) the ftp client can delete the files, but not the folders. Filezilla returns 550 permission denied. The owner only can delete flag is not set, and I've triple checked the permissions and they are indeed 775. Its driving me nuts to have to log into my server to manually delete folders every time. Some of the folders and files are created by 1 of my php scripts, but the permissions are getting set properly when I check the files' properties. Directory and file creation works phenomenal. Can delete files, just not directories. Freebsd 9.0 Running in VirtualBox (32bit all the way around) Proftpd (running as www and www) as ftp server (tried using both dreamweaver and filezilla as the clients) Basic amp setup (apache,mysql,and php).

    Hi, My company has a server with one big partition with Mysql database and php files. Now this partition seems to be corrupted, as reported from kernel messages when I tried to mount it manually: [329862.817837] EXT3-fs error (device loop1): ext3_check_descriptors: Block bitmap for group 1 not in group (block 0)! [329862.817846] EXT3-fs: group descriptors corrupted! I've tried to recovery it running tools from a PLD livecd.   • LDAP/AD Integrated Group/Membership Management Package suitable for embedding in an application

    In several web applications, it is often necessary to define groups of users for purposes of membership as well as role management. For example, in one of our applications we would like to user a group of "Network Engineers" and another group that consists of "Managers" of such Network Engineers. The information we need is contact details of members of each group. So far, we have written our own tools to allow the administrator of the application to add/delete/move groups and their memberships and either store them in a XML file or a database. Increasingly, companies already have the groups we want defined in LDAP/AD, so it would be best to create a pointer in our application to the correspoding group in LDAP. Although there are a number of LDAP libraries and LDAP browsers available and we could code this and provide a web front end to get a list of available groups and their members, we are wondering if there is already a "component framework" available that would readily provide this LDAP browsing functionality that we could just embed this into our application. Something between a library and a full LDAP browser product ? (To clarify, the use case is for an admin of our web application to create a locally relevant group name and then map it to an exiting LDAP group. To enable this in the UI, we would like to present a way for the admin to browse available groups in the company LDAP server, view their membership, and select the LDAP group they would like to map to the locally relevant group name. In a second step, we would then synchronize the members of that LDAP group and their contact details to a store in our application ) Appreciate any pointers.

  • Policy-based template design: How to access certain policies of the class?

    I have a class that uses several policies that are templated. It is called Dish in the following example. I store many of these Dishes in a vector (using a pointer to simple base class), but then I'd like to extract and use them. But I don't know their exact types. How can I access the dessert? I don't even know the Dessert type (it is templated), let alone the complete type of the object that I'm getting from the storage. This is just a toy example, but I think my code reduces to this. I'd just like to pass those Dish classes around, and different parts of the code will access different parts of it (in the example: its appetizer, main dish, or dessert).
