• Cannot access shares via \\servername but \\ip works

  To set up the scenario: One of our techs set one of the domain controllers to use Microsoft time. The time IS correct (including Time Zone) and DOES match the other domain controller's time; it was previously incorrect, however. Since the change, no users can connect via \\servername\share or \\servername.domainname.com but \\ip\share works fine. I cannot even access it from the other domain controller with which I know both have the same time. The servername DOES resolve to the correct IP address. Also, strangely enough, \\domainname.com works as well which resolves to the same server. Finally Everything that I have tried does resolve to the same, correct IP address. The error is: login failure: The target account name is incorrect. I believe it is time related but since the times are correct and match I'm not sure. Anyone know what might cause this?

• pam_tty_audit and non privileged users

  I'm working on a cents 6.3 box and am trying to log all commands executed from a bash shell and came across pam_tty_audit. I've added the appropriate line to my /etc/pam.d/system-auth file: "session required pam_tty_audit.so enable=*" The problem is that it does not appear to capture commands unless a user is root. For example, if i ssh in as root it logs everything to the audit log, but if I ssh as a regular user it does not start logging anything until after I have su to root. Any ideas?

• Sharepoint 2010 reacts very badly to having it's IP address changed. How do I fix it?

  I have Sharepoint 2010 set up on a virtual host for prototyping various projects. If I restart the host, the IP changes. Afterwards, SP complains that it can't find it's configuration database. I can't find where it might be storing an IP. To clarify, the URL remains the same - I have a dynamic dns solution in place to handle that. I can't see anything in the web.config files or the database connection strings that would indicate a hardcoded IP. How can I fix this up in less time than re-installing every time I need to do a project?

• Server 2008 email on Event variables

  One of the new features of Server 2008 is the ability to attach a task to a specific event in the event logs. One of the actions available is to send an email through a SMTP server. This is working great, however it would be ideal if in the message body, the Event contents could be placed. I have tried using $eventdescription and %eventdescription%, but those are just shots in the dark. Any amount of googling produces no results. Does anyone know if this is possible? Update: Sparks' suggestion below is a step in the right direction I believe, however that method doesn't seem to work for all values. For example, I can pull the RecordID, Severity and Channel as shown, but I can't use the same method to retreive the EventID, or most importantly the description. • Deleting file in Samba doesn't delete file?

  Why, when I delete some files in Samba, does it not delete them but instead merely change their filename from filename.txt to ._filename.txt? This is not the behaviour one would expect when "deleting" a file, so I'm wondering if there's an option I forgot to set somewhere in the samba config. It does this to some files but not to others, I have not yet spotted a pattern to its choosiness. There is a Ubuntu 12.04 machine and a Mac OS X machine which have write (and thus delete) capability, no Windows machines have write permission.

• How to automatically start VM created by virt-manager?

  I have created a virtual machine with virt-manager that runs on kvm/qemu. The machine works well when started through virt-manager. However, I would like to be able to start and stop the VM through a script in init.d, so that it comes up and down along with the host. I need to have virt-manager show that the machine is running, and to be able to connect to its console through there. When I use the command line that is produced by running ps -eaf | grep kvm after starting the vm through virt-manager, I get some console messages about redirected character devices, but the machine does start and runs properly. However, I do not get any indication from virt-manager that it has started. How can I modify the command line to get virt-manager to pick up the running VM? Is there anything else about the command line that should change when starting outside of virt-manager? • Stop Windows 7 from accessing or writing to hard drive unless "told" to by me? (More info inside...)

  A confusing question, perhaps, but bear with me. I have two internal HDDs set up in a RAID0 array which I use as mass storage. I access the drive very infrequently (once a day at most) and so I have set up Windows 7's power options to turn off idle disks after only 1 minute. This is fine, and the disks are turned off most of the time. However, I notice that Windows sometimes spins up the drives when I really, really don't want or need it to. This causes a 30 second delay as both drives spin up and lock up my system. Some examples of when this happens: 1) When I'm installing something using Windows Installer or Installshield; it seems to me as if they're using the drive with most available free space as the installer cache location... so my big RAID drive has to spin up! Most annoying. 2) Apparently, when I open a Java-based program which resides on my system drive and has nothing to do with my RAID drive! 3) At boot-up and shut-down time. At shutdown the drive spin up only for the computer to immediately shut down! Incredibly frustrating! I've already tried changing the letter of the drive, and at some points have removed the drive letter entirely, which solves the first two issues above. So my question (FINALLY!) is this: is there any way I can mark this drive as being for "storage only", so Windows basically does not see it at all until I actually invoke it somehow? Or is there any way I could set it up so that only specific programs have write access to it? For example, download managers, TeraCopy, etc. etc.? Basically I want it to be a "ghost drive" until I'm ready to use it and to stop Windows from spinning it up all the damn time! Thank you. :)

• Remote Desktop leaves host unresponsive

  I have my desktop PC at home set up to accept remote connections, and I often connect to it from work on my laptop via mstsc.exe. However, every time I remote to it, I find when I go home that despite the monitor being on - it's not receiving an image and it looks as though the computer is hibernating/asleep. I basically have to restart it whenever I get home and I know there's an answer for why its doing this. More details: When exiting the remote session, I have tried both logging off the account, and closing the RDP window without logging off; both give the same result. When I get home to the desktop I of course try moving the mouse, ctrl+alt+del to see if its responsive to restart, multiple key-press to see if I can get any audio out of it; It seems pretty obvious its sleeping/hibernating in some way: Nothing happens in any of these cases and a physical restart is necessary. Both desktop and laptop are running Windows 7 Ultimate. I'm thinking it really is sleeping/hibernating it, and I'm not sure why because left alone my desktop's power options are set to never turn off the HDD or change its state - I leave it on 24/7. This could be a stupid error on my part but I just can't see it! Thanks.

• Ditto (clipboard manager): can't set shortcut of Win+<num>. Get “Error Registering Position 1”

  Somone made a Youtube video on Ditto, and that person uses Win+Num to paste items from the list. He put a screenshot of his settings on Google Plus: When I try to do the same, which is to put “1” in the text field of Position 1, and check the “Win” box to add the Windows key as the sole modifier for the shortcut, which will be Win + 1, I get an error in that says “Error Registering Position 1” in a window titled CP_Main: Could it be because Win+Num conflicts with the natural Win+Num shortcut (starts the application pinned to the taskbar in that position, or switches to that program) of Windows 7? • How can I make AdobePS recognize my printer in Win98se?

  I am trying to use the adobe product: "PostScript Printer Driver AdobePS 4.2.6 for Windows 95 and Windows 98" to connect a new HP laser printer (CP1025nw) via USB to a machine running win98SE. I am using the PPD file for "HP color LaserJet PS". The Adobe utility installs the printer, and it shows up on the printer list ... but it doesn't print. I get an error message (sometimes) that an error occurred writing to USB001.. Evidently, AdobePS cannot "See" the printer. I suspect there is a problem wrt the printer port. Nothing I pick works. I have two virtual printer ports, USB001 and USB002 which were created during the installation of an HP inkjet printer. The inkjet will work on either of these, but the laser printer works on neither. When I connect the laserjet printer, the windows New Hardware Wizard activates, but I don't see how to point it at the AdobePS Postscript driver. HP has no support whatsoever for win98, so there's no hope of getting help from them. The printer works great with the several winXP computers connected through either the network connection or the USB. So, how do I convince Win98se to use the adobe postscript printer driver? Is this printer even a postscript printer? Is there a better way to get win98se to talk to this printer? Any suggestions?

• Remote Server: Please wait for the System Event Notification Service

  I was rebooting a remote server (Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard) over remote desktop and the session now shows the blue screen during the shutdown sequence, and the message "Please wait for the System Event Notification Service..." It seems that everything is still running on the server (for instance, http://jeffhandley.com is still responding), but I need to get the machine to finish the reboot sequence. How can I force the machine past this point? It's been stuck there for about 30 minutes.

  Consider the following scenario: /dev/md0 - 10GB RAID 1 volume built from /dev/sda and /dev/sdb /dev/md1 - 10GB RAID 1 volume built from /dev/sdc and /dev/sdd /dev/vg0 - volume group containing md0 and md1 /dev/vg0/lv0 - 15GB logical volume The raid devices are created with mdadm; the logical volumes by LVM. What happens to lv0 if md0 fails entirely? That is, if both sda and sdb disintegrate so that the md0 device can not start. Is the portion of the data that resided on md1 still accessible, or is the entire LV gone? Would the answer change if lv0 were created as a striped volume vs non-striped?

  currently we ran into some issues with our mail server setup. im preparing a list of actions that we should enforce and use in order to maintain a proper email solution within our company. we have around 80 exchange users, and send mass emails out almost on a monthly bases to 20,000 + customers each time.. the checklist i currently have: 1) mcafee mxlogic 'cloud' anti-spam functionality for incoming message. 2) antivirus on each computer in company 3) antivirus on exchange and DNS servers 4) setup SPF record 5) setup DKIM 6) setup domainkey 7) setup senderID 8) submit spf to microsoft, yahoo, etc. for 'whitelist' purposes. 9) configure size limits for messages in exchange to safe numbers 10) i have 2 outside IPs for my email server, incase one gets blacklisted, switch to the backup. 11) my internet site rests on a different ip than the mail server 12) all mass emails for company sent through 3rd party company (listtrak.com) 13) setup domain alias, media, enews, and bounce for the 3rd party mass mail software. 14) verify the setup using [email protected] 15) configure group policy and our opendns.org account to prevent unwanted actions and website viewing mass emails: 1) schedule them to send different amounts at different times (1,000 at 10am, 1,000 at 4pm, 1,000 10am next day).. 2) setup user prefences, decide what they want to receive ect. ( there interests) 3) send a more steady flow of email, maybe 100 a week with top new products instead of 20,000k every other month.. if anyone has suggestions or additions/subtractions to this checklist they are greatly appreciated. thank you

  I'm trying to just execute the java command and it's saying it cannot be found, even though it is there. Here's what my output looks like root@oneiric:/usr/lib/jvm/default-java/bin# ls -al java -rwxrwxrwx 1 uucp 143 5750 2012-09-20 11:14 java root@oneiric:/usr/lib/jvm/default-java/bin# ./java -su: ./java: No such file or directory So the ls shows it's there, but it doesn't seem to execute. • Application Screen Repainting Issues

  I have this issue lately at work. It drives be nuts, and I finally stopped to ask this question. It's quite often that an application I've been running just randomly fails to repaint itself for a while, usually in the editor screen. I most often see this occurring with Expression Web, Visual Studio 2008/2010 and SQL Server Management studio. These applications are what I work in the most, so I'm not surprised to mostly see it here. But I was curious if anyone else had a solution for this. I've tried: Reboots. The screen shot below is about 10 minutes after a reboot. New Video Drivers. This machine is running a Nvidia Quadro NVS 290 video card with the latest drivers. Closing other applications, this is the only thing running right now. As far as hardware, this machine has Dual Quad-Core Xeon 2.83ghz Processors, with 10 gigs of memory, running Windows XP SP3 64bit. Any help would be great. JNK EDIT: Per comments from deleted (wrong) answer: I'm running dual monitors. Set it to single display, still occurred. Rebooted, and tried it again, and it still occurred. Switched it back to dual screen. My resolution is only 1400x900 on each.

• Move Items per rule after they are one day old

  I'm not even sure if this is possible with Outlook's current rule set but I thought I'd ask. I'd like emails that meet certain characteristics to automatically be moved from my inbox after they are a day old. I get a lot of notification emails that I end up having to remove the next day manually since I get new ones to replace them each day. So a rule would be like: If the email is from [email protected] and older then 1 day move to already read folder.

It is completely idle, but yet, top is reporting that mysql is using 62% of the CPU? Why is this happening and how do I fix it? • mysql server, open 'dead' connections

  my basic question is what kind of impact does this have on the server.. lets say for example, there is an older program in my company that opens connections to a mysql database server at a high rate (everything they do with the application basically opens a server connections) however, this application was not designed in the way to dispose of the connections after they where created.. alot of the time the connections remain open but are never used again, open 'dead' connections i guess you could say. they just remain connected until the server times them out, or until an admin goes in and removes the sleeping connections manually. im guessing this could be responsible for sometimes not able to connect errors etc. that we receive from other systems that try to access the mysql database? (connections limit reached) could this slow down the server as well? curious what all this could exactly cause. thanks!

• What desktop boards support VT-D or IOMMU?

  I'm looking for a desktop board that supports either VT-D (Intel) or IOMMU (AMD) technology. This is the IO virtualization technology, not VT-x for CPU virtualization. I've found a list of chipsets that are purported to have this, but every board I look at, the vendor has decided to not support that feature. I would really prefer a desktop board over a server board for this. Does anyone have a specific model that is known to support this technology?

• Chrome tabs showing wrong page

  I have a problem with Google Chrome where occasionally when switching to a newly created tab (usually one made from opening a link into a new tab), the wrong page shows. The correct page is functional, links and other functions are present, but I cannot see them because Chrome seems to be reading the page I want but showing another. Sometimes it is identical to the tab I just left, sometimes it shows the content of a previously closed tab. The problem sorts out when I switch to another tab and back, and then the correct page shows. This happens fairly often and is rather annoying. Some of my friends have also experienced this, and have stopped using Chrome because of it. If anybody else has seen this problem and happens to know a fix, I'd really appreciate it.

• Formatting not retained in paste from Ditto (clipboard manager). Plain text pasted instead [Solved] Add supported types

  I'm trying to use Ditto on the Ditto documentation. If I were to copy the table of contents, then paste it (without Ditto) to the word processor, I get http://i.imgur.com/V1GU3.png, and the formatting is maintained. As as a result of the copy operation, the table of contents also goes into the Saved Items List (= History List = Lists the Clips saved from the Clipboard) in Ditto’s Main Window: I open a blank document to paste from Ditto instead of the default clipboard, and press either Ctrl-`, the default Ditto window activation Global Hot Key, or click the tray icon. From this point, I can do 3 things to close the Ditto window, and place the item on the clipboard (the default clipboard?). Select the item, and press Enter Put the cursor on the item, and double-click Select the item, and press Ctrl-c 1) and 2) send a right-click where the cursor is, after the Ditto window closes (presumably to have the paste option ready to access?): Ctrl-c just closes the Ditto window.   I run a win 2k8 a/d server and an win 2k8 exchange 07 server I have a group called 'No Internet Mail', i made it a distribution group. I tried to setup a transport rule on the exchange server that is configured as follows for outgoing: from a member of no internet mail and sent to users outside the organization redirect the message to administrator and send message refused, forwarded to administrator. Please talk to management for external email use. however , when i enable this it forwards everyones emails to me regardless if they are a member of the no internet mail group or not. not sure what im doing wrong, thanks in advanced.

• In Outlook 2010, can you add "Categories" to the "New Email" Ribbon?

  I couldn't figure out how to do this in Outlook 2007, and I was hoping I could do it in Outlook 2010... I want the ability to quickly apply a category when composing a new email (typically a "Waiting For..." category) for things that need a response. It is possible to apply a category by clicking the "Options" ribbon, then the little arrow under the More Options section - but why can't I get the nice big "Categories" drop-down that's available in the "Tags" section of the main Outlook window. There are about a kabillion commands in the "Customize Ribbon" dialog box for the New Mail window, but I couldn't find anything about Categories. Should I just give up?
