  • Compizconfig Grid doesn't work under Ubuntu as virtual machine

    I have installed Ubuntu as virtual machine within Mac. I have installed VM tools. The approach in this link of Compizconfig Grid, which worked in my previous laptop where Ubuntu was not a virtual machine, does not work anymore. I set some shortcut, but no action is launched... Does anyone know why? The major functionality I need from Grid is tiling windows to left/right side of the screen... Does anyone know any alternative?

  • Translate along local axis

    I have an object with a position matrix and a rotation matrix (derived from a quaternion, but I digress). I'm able to translate this object along world-relative vectors, but I'm trying to figure out how to translate it along local-relative vectors. So if the object is tilted 45 degrees around its Z-axis the vector (1, 0, 0) would make it move to the upper right. For world-space translations I simply turn the movement vector into a matrix and multiply it by the position matrix: position_mat = translation_mat * position_mat. For local-space translations I'd think I'd have to use the rotation matrix into that formula, but I see the object spin around instead when I apply a translation over time no matter where I multiply the rotation matrix.

  • Xubuntu fails to stay awake when the machine is under load

    I have the following problem with a fresh install of Xubuntu 12.04: I set up power management options so as to send the machine to sleep after it's been idle for a while. My intention was to have it finish some lengthy numbercrunching and then fall asleep late at night when nobody's present to shut it down. What actually happened, however, is that the machine goes to sleep whenever the desktop session has been idle for the specified amount of time, and it does not seem to care at all about CPU load, and I had to disable sleep altogether. Is there any way to fix this?

  • Google Chrome Browser does not display the images from Local network or local host? [migrated]

    While developing and testing a site on local network I have noticed that while IE/FireFox would display the images coming from URL's like "http:\mypc" or "http:\localhost" or ip adress on the netwrok , google chrome on Galaxy, Windows Machine, or google Android will not display the images. After having burned too many hours trying various CSS, image src tag, html document description tricks, I have given up. During my search I found (and lost) the link to chrome forums regarding this issue that seemed to say it is just so by users. Anyone has any more information on weather it is possible to view images on local host/computer name on netwrok or ip adress?

  • Connect to a VPN from a Virtual Machine

    I am running an Ubuntu ditro inside a VMWare virtual machine with a bridged connection on a windows 7 host. What I am trying to do is to have the virtual machine connect to a VPN, but I'm not having much success. At first, the system was using wicd, but I replaced it with network-manager who's supposed to have OpenVPN support. The problem is, even tho i've purged the wicd installation, there're connections shown in the network manager, and still, I'm able to access the net. I've also added the openvpn data in the network manager tab, but it's shown as never used. PS: when I try to stop and start the NetworkManager service, an error message pops up telling me that there's not such a service, but apt-get tells me i've already installed it...

    I have a problem with mapping pure domain group to one existing on UNIX system. When I map NT domain account by default samba picks local SID - one that can be acquired via the command; net getlocalsid Instead of SID that comes from domain; net getdomainsid This is the behavior that I do not understand. I can explicitly set the SID to the domain one. E.g.: net groupmap add sid=[DOMAIN SID]-[RID] ntgroup=[DOMAIN group] unixgroup=[UNIX group] type=l However the command getent group | grep 'DOMAIN group indicates this group to be domain one - GID created in accordance to RID backend in use, not the GID of 'UNIX group' as expected. Worth to mention I use the winbind. Strange thing is that I already have such mapping in place for other 'DOMAIN group2' that getent group reports with GID of local UNIX group with all members of the 'DOMAIN group2'. Now the question is how to populate such behavior for other of my groups???

  • Domain resolution - local first then external

    I would like to know how I can configure my dns settings so that domain is resolved locally first, then if not resolved it goes to external DNS. I had this working before, I am using Ubuntu through a VM and need the local domain to resolve first but since I have upgraded I had to reconfigure network and now it works only external, local host file does not seem to even be used. Is there an easy way to check this out? I did slap it up in google but no specific answer seemed to match my case and I too tight on delivery deadline to test-and-try different approaches. You guys rock, thanks.

  • Hyper-V virtual machine can't be migrated to a specific host in the cluster

    I have a three-node Hyper-V cluster running on Windows Server 2008 R2 which is working quite flawlessly: there are no errors, live migration works, all hosts can and will happily run all virtual machines, and so on. But one specific virtual machinee is trying to make me go mad: it works on two nodes of the cluster, but not on the third one. Whenever I try to move the VM to that node, be it in a live migration or with the VM powered off, it always fails. In the event log of the host these events are logged: Source: Hyper-V-VMMS Event ID: 16300 Cannot load a virtual machine configuration: General access denied error (0x80070005) (Virtual machine ID <GUID>) Source: Hyper-V-VMMS Evend ID: 20100 The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to register the configuration for the virtual machine '<GUID>' at 'C:\ClusterStorage\<PATH>\<VM>': General access denied error (0x80070005) Source: Hyper-V-High-Availability Event ID: 21102 'Virtual Machine Configuration <VM>' failed to register the virtual machine with the virtual machine management service. All other VMs can be moved to/from the offending host, and the offending VM can be moved between the other two hosts. Also, this is not a storage problem, because there are other VMs in the same cluster volume, and the host has no troubles running them. What's going on here?

  • nameserver spoiling avahi multicast name resolution of .local domain

    After trying to ping a machine on my local network, I noticed that I was trying hit address 66.152.109.24. This is an external public address. Resolution should have occurred via avahi mDNS. I ran dig to see how the name resolution worked and my quest/centurylink name server was retuning results for my .local domain queries!   • Windows 7 machine, can't connect remotely until after ping

    I have a Windows 7 (Home Premium) machine that doubles as a media centre and subversion server. There's a couple of problems with this setup, when connecting to the server from an XP (SP3) machine: Firstly, the machine won't respond to it's machine name until after it's IP address has been pinged.   • Edit-text-files-over-SSH using a local text editor

    I am working in various Linux and UNIX environments. I'd like to elegantly solve the problem of editing remote configuration files over SSH. Instead of using terminal editors (nano), I'd like to open the file in a local text editor on my desktop (Sublime Text 2). CyberDuck, WinSCP and various other SFTP apps can do this. Using editors over X11 forwarding has also proven to be problematic. Also using archaic text editors like Vim or Emacs do not serve my needs well. They could do this, but I prefer using other text editing software. Using ssh mounts (FUSE) are also problematic unless they can happen on the demand and triggered by the remote site. So what I hope to achieve Have a somekind of easily deployable shell script etc. which I can copy to remote server (let's call it mooedit) I run mooedit command on the remote server of which I have connected over SSH connection mooedit sends some kind of signal (over SSH( to my local desktop On my local desktop this signal is captured and it determines 'a ha! moo wants to edit a file on server X in folder Y' File is SFTP transfered to the local desktop (/tmp) File is opened in a nice GUI text editor on the local desktop When Save is pressed, the local desktop notices changes in the file and SFTP sends the resulting file back to the server The question is: What signaling mechanisms SSH provides for this? Any other methods to trigger a local text editor for remote SSH file?

  • Broken filesystem on Windows XP / 7 virtual machine

    I created a virtual machine with Windows XP as the guest system in Microsoft's Virtual PC that ships along with Windows 7. I then installed Virtualbox and began running the MS machine in it. It worked fine. Then, I accidentally started the machine in Microsoft's Virtual PC again. The screen stayed blank, so after a while, realizing my mistake, I closed the Machine. Since then, the VM won't start any more, claiming massive file system problems. Starting Windows in normal mode results in a SOMETHING_FILESYSTEM blue screen; I can start in protected mode and run a checkdisk. That will fix something on every run, but every time I restart, it will start again. I tried re-booting the VM with the Windows CD and doing a repair install. I didn't watch whether that worked out, but I'm caught in the reset / check disk / reset cycle again. Is there anything VM specific that can still be done? On a physical machine, I would say reformat. Is there any way to get hold of the data on the virtual machine through either Virtual PC or Virtualbox? It was an experimental machine, but I had started entering some data on it that would be nice to recover.

  • Make a drive from one machine appear as a physical disk in another machine.

    I want to take a physical disk (or part of a disk) in one machine (call it machine-A) and I want to make it available in another machine (machine-B). But I don't want to map a network drive. I want it to appear in machine-B as a physical drive. Even though it is not a physical drive. The reason I want to do this is i want the ability to create shares in machine-B on that drive. Since I cannot do that on mapped drives, I need to use some utility that fools machine-B to think that it is a physical drive, and treat it as such. Both of these machines are windows server 2003. I heard about NFS, It sounds like what could be the solution to my problem. But isn't that a Linux/Unix protocol? What tools can I use to make this happen? Are there any open source solutions? I don't care what the solution is, as long as it achieves the end result, preferably open source solution though. Thanks for reading guys and gals!

  • Delphi Unit local variables - how to make each instance unique?

    Ok, this, I'm sure is something simple that is easy to do. The problem : I've inherited scary spaghetti code and am slowly trying to better it when new features need adding - generally when a refactor makes adding the new feature neater. I've got a bunch of code I'm packing into a single unit which, in different places in the application, controls the same physical thing in the outside world. The control appears in several places in the application and operates slightly differently in each instance. What I've done is to create a unit with all of the features I need which I can simply drop, as a frame, into each form that requires it. Each form then uses the unit's interface methods to customise the behaviour for each instance. The problem within the problem : In the unit in question (the frame) I have a variable declared in the IMPLEMENTATION section - local to the unit. I also have a procedure, declared in the TYPE section which takes an argument and assigns that argument to the local variable in question - each form passes a unique variable to each instance of the frame/unit. What I want it to do is for each instance of the frame to keep its own version of that variable, different from the others, and use that to define how it operates. What seems to be happening, however, is that all instances are using the same value, even if I explicitly pass each instance a different variable. ie: Unit FlexibleUnit; interface uses //the uses stuff type TFlexibleUnit=class(TFrame) //declarations including procedure makeThisInstanceX(passMeTheVar:integer); private // public // end; implementation uses //the uses var myLocalVar; procedure makeThisInstanceX(passMeTheVar:integer); begin myLocalVar:=passMeTheVar; end; //other procedures using myLocalVar //etc to the end; Now somewhere in another Form I've dropped this Frame onto the Design pane, sometimes two of these frames on one Form, and have it declared in the proper places, etc. Each is unique in that : ThisFlexibleUnit : TFlexibleUnit; ThatFlexibleUnit : TFlexibleUnit; and when I do a: ThisFlexibleUnit.makeThisInstanceX(var1); //want to behave in way "var1" ThatFlexibleUnit.makeThisInstanceX(var2); //want to behave in way "var2" it seems that they both share the same variable "myLocalVar". Am I doing this wrong, in principle? If this is the correct method then it's a matter of debugging what I have (which is too huge to post) but if this is not correct in principle then is there a way to do what I am suggesting?   • If i write in assembly or machine language, will the program work on any computer with a compatible processor?

    Basically, i'm wanting to know if i can use either machine or assembly language to write a program that will work on any computer with an x86 processor, despite differences in operating systems. For example, you run a program and no matter what computer it's on, it'll display "Hello, World!" I know it's a little crazy to want to know either of these to languages, but i figure it's an incredible thing to learn, so why not?

  • Developing on a windows machine that interacts with a linux system

    Sorry for the bad title (couldn't think of a better way to describe it) I have a windows machine which I do development on. However, I have a new project which needs to interact with a linux system (executing linux commands etc.). So, obviously I can't do development on my windows machine..and I don't wish to code on the dev machine, svn commit and then svn update it on the linux machine. Is there a way where any changes I make on my dev machine will be quickly mirrored to the linux machine? SVN is not a very quick alternative and of course some changes will be very minor. Any ideas? A network share I guess....but that's not very pretty (bit slow too). As fellow developers I would like to know if you've been in a similar situation and how you've resolved it. On a furthernote, I can't just install Ubuntu as my development machine and mirror the commands, applications etc. from the linux machine because it's a cluster 'master' machine and so therefore it has quite a special configuration. Thanks guys! EDIT: I've also thought about having web services on the linux machine and then just calling them from code thus seperating platform development dependency. What do you think about that too? thanks
