  in Windows, win+ <-- and win+ --> snap any window to the left/right side of a monitor, and if pressed again, snap the window to the other monitor, in multi-monitor environment. when a window is maximized, it will "restore" the window first, and at the next win+ <-- key the window will snap. this is very easy to use and remember. But on Linux a maximized window is not affected by win+ <-- , and the user must explicitly un-maximize it (win+down. the window is not moved to another monitor a side-snapped window cannot be resized - it behaves like a maximized window. is there another program that behaves like Windows, or I should write one by myself? (i'm using ubuntu/mint)

• No HDMI output on 12.10, Intel HD graphics (Ironlake)

  I am unable to get any output to my external monitor on 12.10. The monitor is recognized and shows the native res (1920x1080, correct) but enabling has no effect. Graphics chipset is Intel Ironlake (Arrandale). I have tried: Full system update after installing Oibaf PPA updated drivers (https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/graphics-drivers) Enabling SNA Kubuntu 12.10 (in addition to Ubuntu 12.10) Both were fresh installs. Nothing works, any troubleshooting ideas? Everything is fine on 11.10. UPDATE 1: Also tried using Intel drivers from Xorg-Edgers PPA (https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa) Still no output on HDMI.

• xrandr shows VGA1 as disconnected

  I have a Thinkpad W520 with Nvidia Optimus graphics. I have disabled the Nvidia card in BIOS (by selecting "integrated graphics"), so I'm running only on the integrated Intel graphics. I get full 3D acceleration, which would suggest the drivers are properly installed. However, I'm not able to use an external monitor. • Both screens always stay on after adding second monitor

  I had a single 1920x1080 monitor on a Windows 7 desktop PC and, per "power management" (not screen saver), the screen would go blank after 10 minutes. I added another monitor (2560x1600 if that matters) and since then, neither screen has ever blanked. I've tried turning on the "blank" screen saver, but that didn't help either -- I can go away for hours and when I come back, both screens are on. I've seen others with similar issues apparently caused by e.g. wireless mice that seem to move infinitesimally, but I've got the same wired mouse I had before. I can't understand why neither the screen saver nor power management is doing what it should to blank the screens, when "power management" used to do it when there was only one monitor. Maybe it doesn't matter so much with current LCD display technology (no "burn in") but doesn't a monitor use more power when "power management" hasn't turned off the display? Thanks for any suggestions.

• Dell L501X Display Port Screen issue

  I got a Dell XPS L501X with a mini display port to VGA connector for my External Screen. On Displays it shows me: Acer Technologies 24" (which is the monitor) but only lets me up to 1024x768 resolution (The native resolution of this monitor is 1920x1200). I tried adding a new mode with xrandr, but when I applied it, it reverted back to 1024x768. As far as I know, the display port is controlled by the Intel card, right?   I have two AMD Radeon HD 6870 video cards in CrossFireX configuration and I would like to add a third monitor. I understand to use "Eyefinity" you need to use an active mini displayport to DVI adapter. I am not interested in the benefits of "Eyefinity", I just want a third monitor with Windows extended desktop. Is it possible to use either the HDMI head on the first card or the DVI heads from the second card to get a third monitor running without "Eyefinity" and an active adapter?

• Automatically change resolution when not in dock

  I have Ubuntu 11.04 (yep, I know it's old news) on my Lenovo W520. At home, I have a dock with dual monitors. I have a pretty decent setup - things work almost perfectly (hence the reason I'm reluctant to upgrade... that and I'm not 100% sold on Unity). Anyway, the only annoyance I have is that when I'm on travel, I use the laptop screen. When I un-dock the laptop, I need to manually go into nvidia x-server settings and change the resolution from 'Auto' to 1920x1200, or it will think I have two screens, and my mouse pointer will be able to go way off the left side of the screen. This isn't a big deal, but I need to do it every time I restart the x-server (so if I reboot, or have to kill it, etc...) What would be really nice is if there was a way for it to automatically detect whether or not there is external monitors (which it seems to do already), and switch into the mode I select, depending on which monitors are connected. Is there any way to accomplish this? • How to map a virtual desktop to a monitor in a multiple monitor setup?

  OS: Microsoft Windows Vista SP2, Microsoft Windows 7 My laptop is plugged to a docking station that supports dual monitors, which I use extensively. I have windows placed where I want them. All is well and predictable with this setup until I un-dock. The moment I un-dock all windows that I placed in the secondary monitor piles up in the primary monitor and it is an unholy mess. So, I am looking for a solution where if I use virtual desktops, one of them can be mapped to a monitor and when un-docked what was there in the secondary monitor stays in a virtual desktop. Do you folks know of a tool or workaround that can address my quandary?

  Hi, I use Mac OS X Leopard with 4 different Spaces and an external monitor at workplace, which is located above the laptop. On each Space I work on a different project, with different terminal windows and Xcode and Finder windows. The problem happens when I am at home, then I use an external monitor but now located at left position. When the MacBook wakes up, everything gets messed up and even some windows switch from one space to another. Could I somehow fix it so always the windows belonging to one Space remain there and also the association to main/external monitor even if I change to another external monitor? Thanks

• Compiz and Desktop Effects on Netbook with External Monitor

  I have an Acer Aspire One AO150 and am having trouble plugging in an external monitor under Ubuntu 9.10. There were no problems under 9.04. If I plug in an external monitor once the machine is already up, then bring up the 'display' application to activate it, it basically hangs. There are no problem under these circumstances if I have desktop effects turned off. I've seen a few mentions of this problem on the Ubuntu forums, but never a solid solution. Any ideas? A few more details after a question below. The machine does not respond to its keyboard commands to switch to an external monitor, nor does it respond to Ctrl-Alt-F1, etc to switch out of X. The pointer is visible on the monitors (at the edge of each) and is frozen as a 'busy' cursor, but with no animation. The kernel does respond to SysReq commands (REISUB). In the latest attempt I had the external monitor active earlier, then removed it and activated desktop effects. Upon plugging in the eternal monitor then bringing up the display application, it hangs.

• Hide a 2nd Monitor from a Programs Print Screen

  I run 2 monitors on a PC that also runs a program for the Freelancing site Elance.com. The program they provide, takes screenshots and uploads them to my account for a client to see at different intervals. My goal is to make the screenshot that the program takes and uploads, to somehow only take a shot of my "Main" or "Defualt" monitor and ignore my 2nd monitor. The main reason is my 2nd monitor generally has private data that I do not displayed to the world on a website. Does anyone know if there is any kind of program or trick I can use that will make it appear that I have 1 monitor when a Screenshot is taken? I am not sure how the program does it and how that works as I am a web developer and not a C++ or any kind of low level programmer. If the Elance program simply runs the same function that is called when a PrintScreen key is pressed on a keyboard, then I am thinking it might be possible to maybe trick that into only the default desktop? Any ideas or help would be appreciated, thank you

• External monitor turning black intermittently

  I have installed an external monitor (Dell ST2220L, 21.5 inch) on my laptop (Sony Vaio). I am using a DVI-D cable for connection. Since the laptop does not have a DVI-D port, I have connected a DVI-D to HDMI connector on the laptop end and inserted the cable in HDMI port of the laptop.. I have switched off the laptop display and adjusted the screen resolution on the Dell external monitor to 1920 x 1080 and adjusted colors for the Windows 7 and brightness and contrast from the monitor. The problem is the monitor turns of blank intermittently for 1-2 seconds and turns on again at random interval. What could be the reason for this and how to get rid of this problem?

  My system: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. My graphic card: nVidia GeForce gt430. My monitor is Samsung LE26R51B. And my connection is digital (HDMI). The current screen resolution is not good at all, I can't see the top bar and the left one. Here are the available resolutions in settings: 1920*1080 1280*720 960*600 and lower resolutions But with no one of these I can see the top bar in it. They are bigger than the monitor. In Windows 7 I use 1202*670 resolution. How can I change the resolution to what I want exactly?

• Samsung S23A750D 23" 120Hz get no signal

  I have a few days ago received this monitor. Samsung S23A750D 23" 120Hz I am using it with a Gainward Nvidia GTX570 Phantom GPU via DisplayPort cabling. The trouble I am having is that the monitor has great trouble picking up a signal from the GPU when the computer has gone into sleep mode or been switched off (at this point I can get a signal to the monitor). It's only when I turn the computer back on and then the monitor that I get no signal. To get a signal I have to remove the power cable and put back in or sometimes remove the DP cable and put back in. I have tried not turning the monitor off (the monitor goes into a sleep mode when the computer goes into sleep mode) but on putting the computer on it does not pick up a signal. It is only by removing the power cable and/or DisplayPort cable will I get a signal. And this is intermittent. I have tried upgrading the firmware from Samsung but this hasn't helped. Any ideas?

• Does Monitor.Wait ensure that fields are re-read?

  It is generally accepted (I believe!) that a lock will force any values from fields to be reloaded (essentially acting as a memory-barrier or fence - my terminology in this area gets a bit loose, I'm afraid), with the consequence that fields that are only ever accessed inside a lock do not themselves need to be volatile. (If I'm wrong already, just say!) A good comment was raised here, questioning whether the same is true if code does a Wait() - i.e. once it has been Pulse()d, will it reload fields from memory, or could they be in a register (etc). Or more simply: does the field need to be volatile to ensure that the current value is obtained when resuming after a Wait()? Looking at reflector, Wait calls down into ObjWait, which is managed internalcall (the same as Enter). The scenario in question was: bool closing; public bool TryDequeue(out T value) { lock (queue) { // arbitrary lock-object (a private readonly ref-type) while (queue.Count == 0) { if (closing) { // <==== (2) access field here value = default(T); return false; } Monitor.Wait(queue); // <==== (1) waits here } ...blah do something with the head of the queue } } Obviously I could just make it volatile, or I could move this out so that I exit and re-enter the Monitor every time it gets pulsed, but I'm intrigued to know if either is necessary.

  I am seeing wildly different performance from a clients web site, and would like to set up some sort of monitoring. What I'm looking for is a service that will issue requests to a couple of URLs, and report on the time it took to process the page - TTFB and time to download the entire page - that means I need something that will process javascript & css. Are there services like this? I've seen a few that monitor uptime, but they don't seem to report on the overall page performance.

• No signal to monitor after driver install

  After installing 10.10 I used Hardware Drivers (Jockey) to install the graphics driver v11.2 for my ATI HD 5770. After restarting to activate the driver all went well and the boot screen showed up but not like the normal one the text was rough on the edges and after the boot finished the screen turned black and no signal. I have found some forum discussions about that issue but no fix worked for me. I use a DVI to VGA adapter and I have a View Sonic E70F CRT monitor. • Xubuntu dual monitor broke display

  After I used Settings Display to enable my second monitor, my first display is not working anymore either. So I enabled both, then clicked save configuration since it was working and boom it crashed. Now when I start up, I can see the screen which I type my password but it goes black after that! When I boot into recovery mode it works fine but in Settings Display I don't see HDMI at all to disable it. Is there anyway to restore all display setting to default? (I can Ctrl+ALT+F1 and type commands but xrandr returns no results over there) EDIT I should clarify that system bios is set to laptop display

• Dual Monitor results in 'greyed' windows

  This occurs in Maverick and Natty. Single screen is fine, mirror of single screen is fine. If the mirror box is unchecked and the second monitor is turned on to extend the desktop then all windows are greyed out (like they do when a process has timed out and is unresponsive) and pop up menus are greyed out but icons, panels and background are fine and the windows do operate (just can't see them well enough to use) I have a D620 with intel graphics. This machine did work with dual monitors at some time in the past, however I have been using another machine, a D630 with nvidia and it works fine. Yes, there have been any number of updates. I also upgraded from Maverick to Natty to see if it would go away. No joy. Also, the D620 has a dual boot windows system and the windows xp system works fine with daul monitors There is a forum thread that goes into more detail and there are a number of users experiencing this problem.   I had an occasion recently where our website was compromised - a link farm was added to a couple of the pages on one occasion, and on another occasion, a large and nasty aspx file was put on the server. I won't mention the host's name (Hostway), but I was pretty annoyed that someone was able to do this. No, it wasn't a leaky password - around 10 sites hosted by HW with consecutive IP addresses got trashed. Anyway. What I need is a utility or service (preferably free) that takes a snapshot of my websites contents, and then regularly monitors the files (size and datestamp) for unauthorized changes or additions, and alerts me. I've used web services that monitor one file for changes, but I'm looking for something a bit more aggressive.

• Force full-screen game to one monitor?

  I have two monitors, one 1920x1200 and the other 1920x1080, and in 10.10 they were "separate". As in when I opened the display preferences they were shown as separate screens. Since installing (from scratch) 11.04 I instead have one giant 3840x1200 screen spread over the two monitors. Not a problem per se, except when I want to play full-screen games! When playing games I want them to be on the primary (1920x1200) monitor, but since the game only detects one screen I cant do that, even if I lower the resolution in-game. I have a nVidia GTS 250 card, using nvidia-current driver (version 270.41.06), even though "Additional Drivers" reports the driver is "activated but not currently in use". Is there a way to force the game to use only one of the monitors? Or make the game detect both monitors?
