  • After reinstalling ATI graphics drivers, my keyboard and mouse aren't working anymore

    On Ubuntu 11.04 I tried to install the open source drivers for my laptops ATI Mobility Radeon 5470M but I messed that up a bit and lost xserver. Now I've managed to solve that problem with this and by downloading the ATI proprietary drivers and install those manually. Now, when Ubuntu loads up I get to the login screen but I can't use my mouse or my keyboard (usb keyboard and mouse doesn't work either). If I use the recovery console, then login with that and then run 'startx'. I can login fine (though Unity doesn't show, the graphics seem to be working because it shows the fading animation of libnotify), but I can't type or move my mouse.

  • Why no "da-doomp" (disconnect notification sound) sometimes when unplugging wireless mouse receiver?

    Sometimes (maybe one case in 3), when I unplug the wireless mouse receiver on my Sony VGN-CS215J laptop, there is no "da-doomp" sound, even after a minute or two. And if I plug the receiver back in there is no corresponding "du-dump" sound and the mouse is still (immediately) "live". This can happen when the activity light is out and there's nothing obviously going on -- it's not simply that the box is too busy. Other times one gets the expected behavior (and usually I get the correct behavior if I plug the receiver back in a few seconds and then unplug it after a "failure"). The reason this is significant is that if I get no "da-doomp" then the laptop will not sleep properly -- it will go to sleep initially, but then reawaken a few minutes later inside my laptop case and proceed to run the battery down (and no doubt overheat the unit). Any ideas?

  • Why would my mouse pointer be jerky when it can't get a signal from my router?

    I've got a fairly new PC but when moving the mouse across the screen, the pointer jerks as if the PC is freezing momentarily every second or so. Strangely, this only seems to happen if the signal from the wifi router is bad. If I move the PC closer to the router to get a full signal, it's fine. It also seems to affect the keyboard; Opening notepad and holding down a key shows the same momentary freezes. -- Update: It's a logitech wireless mouse, and a wired USB logitech keyboard.

  • Ctrl Alt Left/Right moves mouse - how to find responsible software?

    Hi, I've got a bit of a strange problem. On one of our computers, pressing ctrl + alt + left/right/up/down will move the mouse pointer on the screen, but it's not clear which software makes this happen. It interferes with other software that uses these shortcuts. I've already tried disabling some software, such as WinKey and a Kensington mouse driver, but that didn't make a difference. It's happening on a Windows XP SP3 computer by the way. Does anyone have an idea of how to find the software that traps this shortcut? Suggestions for actual (types of) software that might be doing this are welcome too. Thanks!

  • Why my USB mouse get suspended after 3 seconds of inactivity?

    Mouse's bottom LED goes off after 3 seconds after connection and cursor movements and wheel stops. Pressing any button, reconnecting or resetting USB device resumes it for another 3 seconds (when resumed by pressing button, this event does no go to X). This happens when using any of USB ports. This mouse works well with other computer with Linux. It was working well before. Why can it happen? How to fix it? Update: It happens only if laptop is on battery. Answer: this is caused by powersaving done by laptop-mode-tools. To temporary turn off powersaving one can use for i in /sys/bus/usb/devices/*/power/control; do echo on > $i; done

  • Chrome: middle mouse button overriden on certain web pages?

    Normally when I click on a link in Chrome with a middle mouse button, the page open s in a new tab. I find it useful and would like it to always work that way. But on some sites, specifically SharePoint sites I'm often working with, middle click on certain links opens the page in the same tab. Example can be found on this publicly available SharePoint demo page when clicking on "Internet Sites" or "SharePoint resources" links with middle mouse button. Those menu items seem like a link (they definitely have URL assigned). Why do them open in the same tab instead of a new one, when middle clicked? Can this behavior be changed in Chrome's settings or using some addon?

  • Enable Full Screen Mode in Media Center Without Trapping the Mouse

    If you have a dual monitor setup and use Windows Media Center, you’re probably aware that when WMC is in full screen mode, it traps the mouse so you can’t work on a second monitor. Here we look at how to solve the annoyance. The Maxifier is an application that allows you to open Media Center in full screen mode without restricting the mouse. It relieves the annoyance of WMC capturing your mouse on a dual monitor setup. Note: If you don’t have two monitors attached, most of The Maxifier’s functions won’t work. Installation and Use Download, extract, and install The Maxifier. (See the download link below) The Maxifier runs minimized in the system tray and you access the options by right-clicking on the icon. If Media Center is not already open, you can choose Start Media Center to start WMC on the main start screen. Or, choose one of the other selections to open another area of Media Center. By default, Maxifier opens Media Center in full screen mode on the secondary monitor. When Media Center is open in full screen mode, you’ll notice you can now freely move your mouse around your multi-monitor setup. When Media Center is open, you’ll see five additional options. The Fit Screen options simply fits Media Center to the full screen, but still show the Windows borders. Full screen options put WMC in full screen mode.   The Maxifier Options allow you to choose from the various start up options. Selecting Watch for Media Center starting will prompt Maxifier to open WMC to the main start page in full screen mode on the secondary monitor automatically, even if you open Media Center without using The Maxifier.  (You may need to restart for this to take effect) If you have more than 2 monitors, you can define on which monitor to open Media Center, and which monitor you consider to be the main screen.   You can also define a number of Hotkeys in The Maxifier settings. First, select the Enable Hotkeys checkbox. To create a Hotkey, click in the text field and then press the keys to use as the Hotkey. To remove a Hotkey, click in the field and press the Delete key.   Conclusion The Maxifier is a simple program that enables Media Center users to take full advantage of a multi-monitor workspace.   • Two small issues with Windows Phone 7 ApplicationBar buttons (and workaround)

    When you work with the ApplicationBar in Windows Phone 7, you notice very fast that it is not quite a component like the others. For example, the ApplicationBarIconButton element is not a dependency object, which causes issues because it is not possible to add attached properties to it. Here are two other issues I stumbled upon, and what workaround I used to make it work anyway. Finding a button by name returns null Since the ApplicationBar is not in the tree of the Silverlight page, finding an element by name fails. For example consider the following code: <phoneNavigation:PhoneApplicationPage.ApplicationBar> <shell:ApplicationBar> <shell:ApplicationBar.Buttons> <shell:ApplicationBarIconButton IconUri="/Resources/edit.png" Click="EditButtonClick" x:Name="EditButton"/> <shell:ApplicationBarIconButton IconUri="/Resources/cancel.png" Click="CancelButtonClick" x:Name="CancelButton"/> </shell:ApplicationBar.Buttons> </shell:ApplicationBar> </phoneNavigation:PhoneApplicationPage.ApplicationBar> with private void EditButtonClick( object sender, EventArgs e) { CancelButton.IsEnabled = false; // Fails, CancelButton is always null } The CancelButton, even though it is named through an x:Name attribute, and even though it appears in Intellisense in the code behind, is null when it is needed. To solve the issue, I use the following code: public enum IconButton { Edit = 0, Cancel = 1 } public ApplicationBarIconButton GetButton( IconButton which) { return ApplicationBar.Buttons[(int) which] as ApplicationBarIconButton; } private void EditButtonClick( object sender, EventArgs e) { GetButton(IconButton.Cancel).IsEnabled = false; } Updating a Binding when the icon button is clicked In Silverlight, a Binding on a TextBox’s Text property can only be updated in two circumstances: When the TextBox loses the focus. Explicitly by placing a call in code. In WPF, there is a third option, updating the Binding every time that the Text property changes (i.e. every time that the user types a character). Unfortunately this option is not available in Silverlight). To select option 1, 2 (and in WPF, 3), you use the Mode property of the Binding class. The issue here is that pressing a button on the ApplicationBar does not remove the focus from the TextBox where the user is currently typing. If the button is a Save button, this is super annoying: The Binding does not get updated on the data object, the object is saved anyway with the old state, and noone understands what just happened. In order to solve this, you can make sure that the Binding is updated explicitly when the button is pressed, with the following code: private void SaveButtonClick(object sender, EventArgs e) { // Force update binding first var binding = MessageTextBox.GetBindingExpression( TextBox.TextProperty); binding.UpdateSource(); // Property was updated for sure, now we can save var vm = DataContext as MainViewModel; vm.Save(); } Obviously this is less maintainable than the usual way to do things in Silverlight. So be careful when using the ApplicationBar and remember that it is not a Silverlight element like the others!! Happy coding!   • Only close button shows up in Google Chrome in GNOME Shell

    After I installed the GNOME shell in Ubuntu, I decided that I didn't like having the "Close/Minimize/Maximize" buttons on the right, so I switched them over to the left using gconftool-2 --set "/apps/metacity/general/button_layout" --type string "close, minimize, maximize:" After resetting the shell, however, I found that with the GTK+ theme, only the close button shows up. Using system title bar and borders will make all the buttons appear, but I really want to use the theme because the system title bar makes the top bar too thick. Logging out and back in didn't fix it, and I tried reinstalling Chrome, but the problem persists.

  • Windows 8 - Synaptics driver - Mouse keeps freezing

    I have Win-8 Pro installed on my Dell XPS. This has Synaptic PS/2 Port TouchPad. As I upgraded the Laptop from Win7 to Win8 all my factory Mouse software (along with other preinstalled software) was all deleted. So for the mouse, I installed Windows 8/7/XP/Vista 64/32-bit Edition v16.3.15.1. Problem - every few seconds (or minutes at times), the mouse freezes. Windows is still working, it's just the mouse. I have to wait 5-15 seconds before the mouse works again. I thought this was because the Synaptic Driver I am installing is not Win-8 compatible but this is not the case. It seems the mouse freezes when Windows is working, loading or opening new programs/windows. I have the same problem in my other Laptop which has upgraded Win8 pro. This is a Dell Studio. What's causing this?

  • Should I choose <button> element or css buttons?

    Ok, here's the thing. I've done a webpage which contains forms and so I added buttons as elements and this works great. I created their own css classes and use graphics as background images for each of them. All working great (these are submit buttons btw) Anyway, I've also got a jQuery script from before that takes all a href hyperlinks and add content from a set div from an external file and adds to a div in my current page, all in one animation. But this would probably not work with form buttons? In any case I need to be able to have these buttons work as traditional hyperlinks anyway. So what do I do? I thought about using css-buttons alltogether, but I'm not able to have them stack vertically. Using float left or right just put the buttons outside of their parent containers (probably a different fix for that). But in any case, using css buttons, that wouldn't work as a submit button for the forms anyway would it? Should I perhaps use both form buttons and css buttons? What do you do?

  • How to store (and use) the current mouse position?

    What is the best way to store the current mouse position (system-wide) and then (later) put the mouse at that stored point? [NSEvent mouseLocation] gets me the position, and I can move the mouse with a CGEventMouseMoved, but they each use a different co-ordinates system (I believe y=0 is the top for NSEvent and the bottom for a CGEvent). I'm worried about the robustness of capturing the screen height and using it to convert between the two - or is this the best approach?

  • Algorithm to emulate mouse movement as a human does?

    Hello I need to test a software that treats some mouse movements as "gestures". For such a task I need to emulate mouse movement from point A to point B, not in straight line, but as a real mouse moves - with curves, a bit of jaggedyness etc. Is there any available solution (algorithm/code itself, not a library/exe) that I can use? Of course I can write some simple sinusoidal math by myself, but this would be a very crude emulation of a human hand leading a mouse. Perhaps such a task has been solved already numerous times, and I can just borrow an existing code? :)

I didn't think it would be hard to do, considering everything I've seen on low-level hooks, but I was wrong (astounding, right?). I looked at a few examples, but the examples I've seen either block both keyboard and mouse, or just hide the mouse. Any help with this would be great.

Basically, is there an stdio equivalent for mouse (and other input) input in c? Or is there a library that is minimal and cross compatible on multiple platforms. Just being able to print mouse coordinates to a terminal window would be enough.

  • How do I stop VLC from stealing my volume buttons

    when I press the volume buttons on my laptop, usually the system volume is changed. However, when I do this with VLC it "steals" the presses and adjusts it's own "volume" instead. The system volume is also changed. I can't find any way to turn this off in VLC. Does anyone know? Update: Sorry, some more details I should have included originally: VLC VERSION: 1.1.4 (and a few previous releases, back to about 1.1.0 or so, I think) OS: Win Vista Pro 32 HARDWARE: Dell 1720 laptop (the volume buttons are little buttons on the front of the unit, they may work something like "media" keyboard volume buttons) Update: The buttons seem to map to Ctrl+Alt+b and Ctrl+Alt+c (according to the shortcut key box in windows shortcut properties) but the VLC advanced preferences hotkeys screen doesn't list these as the keys it uses for volume. I changed it so there are no volume hotkeys in VLC settings - no luck it still steals the presses and adjusts the volume. Also, pressing Ctrl+Alt+b or c doesn't change my system volume, so who knows what windows or VLC are doing to recognise those volume buttons. :(

  • When controlling from VNC, only mouse cursor moves

    If I am accessing my computer through VNC, when I am in windows A (example: Terminal) and I change to Window B (example: Firefox) on the host computer, everything is fine and it switches. But on the computer or other device I'm accessing FROM, it doesn't switch windows. When I move the mouse, both on the host computer, and the device I'm accessing from, the mouse moves, but the window still doesn't switch. Can this be fixed?

  • Mouse takes a while to start working after boot

    I just recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 (64 bit) and a number of my USB devices have stopped working. At least, they don't work for the first 3-5 minutes. I have two mice (one wireless, one wired) and a camera, which seem to take Ubuntu 3-5 minutes to recognize after booting up.     In WPF there is no possibility to control when the Minimize and Maximize buttons are disabled when the WindowStyle is SingleBorderWindow or ThreeDBorderWindow .   • Set which pulseaudio sync is affected by volume control buttons

    On my previous installation of ubuntu 10.04 it was possible to set a sync in pavucontrol, which is affected by the volume up-/down buttons on my keyboard. Now in Lubuntu 11.10 this does not work anymore. I can check the green tick, but this affects nothing, still always one and the same sink is affected. Did anybody have this before? Where is this function configured - is there a config file, in which I could change this configuration directly?

  • Xubuntu 12.04 notifications buttons don't work

    "When I tried to reconnect my bluetooth mouse I realized all notification windows do not allow me to press any buttons. Nothing happens. I can close them out but clicking options like "allow" "deny" does nothing." After some googling I found that I'm not the only one with this problem, but I can't find any fix.
