• Old CRT screen's high resolution doesn't work anymore on windows 7

  One year ago I decided to switch from Windows XP to Windows 7. I had a 17" CRT monitor with a screen resolution of 1600x1200 which worked fine on Windows XP. While installing Windows 7 everything went well until Windows 7 was going to install the video card its driver. Windows 7 puts the screen to its recommended resolution and my screen became black. I waited a few minutes to be sure the installation was finished. I turned off the computer by hand and restarted the computer on a resolution of 800x640. When windows 7 was done installing I went to screen resolutions and the resolution of 1600x1200 was on the top of the list with '(recommended)' next to it. I tried putting it on 1600x1200 but again my screen went black. I installed all windows 7 updates including the video card driver from the NVidia site (NOT from Windows 7). I tried about everything to make it work on 1600x1200 but with no succes. The highest resolution I got with the crt monitor was 1280x1024. I had a TFT screen which had 1280x1024 as max resolution and had better colors, so I used that one till today. My video card is 9600GT and my power supply is beyond sufficient. I even tried to install the driver I had on XP to see if it worked, but no results. I tried classic mode on windows 7, changed the dpi, the frequentie and the monitor settings, but nothing worked. I really like a vertical resolution of 1200, but it seems today I'm bound to all those standard monitors with a resolution of 1980x1024... Can anybody explain to me what the cause is that it worked on Windows XP but not on Windows 7? And maybe a solution to the problem (I actually gave up on getting it fixed...) Thanks a lot in advance. SOLUTION I downloaded the according monitor driver and installed it. Next I rebooted my computer on low resolution (800x640) and connected the CRT monitor. When Windows 7 booted successfully I went to computer management and 'update the driver' of my monitor. I manually selected 'Generic PnP monitor' and made that one active. I want to advanced settings at 'Screen resolution' and selected the mode '1600x1200 (32-bit) 80 Hertz (95 Hertz did not work). Now I had my resolution on 1600x1200. I repeated the earlier step to select the original monitor again instead of the Generic monitor. Quite a way to solve this problem, but it worked! Thanks a lot you all.

• FGLRX installation without main monitor

  This is a spiritual follow up to this I am doing some modern OpenGL tutorials and I have found that MESA does not support openGL 3.0+, so I need to get back to FGLRX even if its given me grief in the past. Every time I have tried to install FGLRX drivers I generally get thrown to the terminal and have to do some recovery, etc. before I can get them to work. Problem is, now that my main monitor is borked, when I install FGLRX drivers I cannot boot to terminal. Question: How do I back up my current windowing so that when I (inevitably) lost my boot due to FGLRX installation, I can recover it with a livecd without reinstalling, and how can I install it without a main monitor?

• Conky to Monitor WLS Managed Servers

  I've been using a little utility on my linux-based machines for years called conky.  It can be used to monitor system resources, but I wanted to modify it to monitor my WebLogic managed servers too. Once installing conky, you'll need to update the .conkyrc file.  Here is a simple example. • Ubuntu 12.04 "Do nothing" when "lid closed" blanks out external monitor

  This is not the same as this question. I have Ubuntu 12.04 running with an Nvidia card on a W510 Thinkpad. I have one external monitor connected. When I change the power settings to "Do nothing" when "Lid closed" it still keeps the system running which is great. However, it blanks out the display on any external monitors making the system useless. I plan on getting a dock soon and having to identical resolution monitors and would love to be able to dock the monitor and work as normal on the external monitors. Does anyone have a suggestion or fix for this? Should I report this as a bug or feature request?

  I was wondering if there is a possibility to use my netbook with ubuntu 12.04 as a second monitor for my fedora desktop, because its keyboard is broken but everything else is running just fine. I already read about x2x, but I hope there is a more direct way to do this (I mean not over the WLAN but e.g. via LAN etc... ). Would it be possible to directly use the monitor without even running the laptop? For example through an VGA adapter? Thanks for your replies!

• What causes Multi-Page allocations?

  Writing about changes in the Denali Memory Manager In his last post Rusi mentioned: " In previous SQL versions only the 8k allocations were limited by the ‘max server memory’ configuration option.  Allocations larger than 8k weren’t constrained." In SQL Server versions before Denali single page allocations and multi-Page allocations are handled by different components, the Single Page Allocator (which is responsible for Buffer Pool allocations and governed by 'max server memory') and the Multi-Page allocator (MPA) which handles allocations of greater than an 8K page. If there are many multi-page allocations this can affect how much memory needs to be reserved outside 'max server memory' which may in turn involve setting the -g memory_to_reserve startup parameter. We'll follow up with more generic articles on the new Memory Manager structure, but in this post I want to clarify what might cause these larger allocations. So what kinds of query result in MPA activity? I was asked this question the other day after delivering an MCM webcast on Memory Manager changes in Denali. After asking around our Dev team I was connected to one of our test leads Sangeetha who had tested the plan cache, and kindly provided this example of an MPA intensive query: A workload that has stored procedures with a large # of parameters (say > 100, > 500), and then invoked via large ad hoc batches, where each SP has different parameters will result in a plan being cached for this “exec proc” batch. This plan will result in MPA.   Exec proc_name @p1, ….@p500 Exec proc_name @p1, ….@p500 . . . Exec proc_name @p1, ….@p500 Go   Another workload would be large adhoc batches of the form: Select * from t where col1 in (1, 2, 3, ….500) Select * from t where col1 in (1, 2, 3, ….500) Select * from t where col1 in (1, 2, 3, ….500) … Go  In Denali all page allocations are handled by an "Any size page allocator" and included in 'max server memory'. • Blender 2.63a window position unstable with dual monitor extended desktop

  I have two 1920 x 1200 HP monitors and running Ubuntu 12.10. If I set them up as an extended desktop, (both 1280 x 1024 positioned for 2048 x 1280, all my applications work fine EXCEPT Blender (even Inkscape). Blender works great on a single monitor but always defaults to a window size that uses all available real estate and it can't do that with 2048 x 1280. It launches, but jumps all over the screen. Does any know a way to start Blender in a fixed size window so it would run in just one monitor?

  Ok, lets get this over with. I have a dual-monitor, ati setup on gnome-shell that was just fine until this morning. Then, this happened. Look closer... Whatever has happened to my ubuntu setup? My second monitor still works, entirely normally, with the exception that I cannot (obviously) access activities (as i am in gnome-fallback ). I do wish to resume my work... EDIT: By entirely normally, I mean I can move my mouse over it and have seperate windows on it and stuff. It's not mirroring. UPDATE: Unity works entirely normally.

• Multi-Part Map Troubleshooting

  Scenario I came across a nice little one with multi-part maps the other day. I had an orchestration where I needed to combine 4 input messages into one output message like in the below table:   Input Messages Output Messages Company Details Member Details Event Message Member Search Member Import   I thought my orchestration was working fine but for some reason when I was trying to send my message it had no content under the root node like below <ns0:ImportMemberChange xmlns:ns0="http://---------------/"></ns0:ImportMemberChange>   My map is displayed in the below picture. I knew that the member search message may not have any elements under it but its root element would always exist. The rest of the messages were expected to be fully populated. I tried a number of different things and testing my map outside of the orchestration it always worked fine. The Eureka Moment The eureka moment came when I was looking at the xslt produced by the map. Even though I'd tried swapping the order of the messages in the input of the map you can see in the below picture that the first part of the processing of the message (with the red circle around it) is doing a for-each over the GetCompanyDetailsResult element within the GetCompanyDetailsResponse message. This is because the processing is driven by the output message format and the first element to output is the OrganisationID which comes from the GetCompanyDetailsResponse message. At this point I could focus my attention on this message as the xslt shows that if this xpath statement doesn’t return the an element from the GetCompanyDetailsResponse message then the whole body of the output message will not be produced and the output from the map would look like the message I was getting. <ns0:ImportMemberChange xmlns:ns0="http://---------------/"></ns0:ImportMemberChange> I was quickly able to prove this in my map test which proved this was a likely candidate for the problem. I revisited the orchestration focusing on the creation of the GetCompanyDetailsResponse message and there was actually a bug in the orchestration which resulted in the message being incorrectly created, once this was fixed everything worked as expected. Conclusion Originally I thought it was a problem with the map itself, and looking online there wasn’t really much in the way of content around troubleshooting for multi-part map problems so I thought I'd write this up. I guess technically it isn't a multi-part map problem, but I spend a good couple of hours the other day thinking it was.

• Second monitor not coming back on after going into hibernate

  10 and a new problem has come up. When I my machine hibernates the second monitor does not come back on. I did not have this problem in 11.04. The main monitor is plugged into a vga port, and the second plugged into a display port then an adapter to vga the system is a Dell Optiplex 790 and the graphics card is (according to lspci) a VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) I am running the classic Gnome desktop though the problem occurs in Unity as well.

• Multi Column Block Too Narrow in Chrome

  My Web site displays song lyrics in a multi-column format, using CSS3. Both Firefox & MSIE 10+ display the multi-column text perfectly, but Chrome does not. This sample page shows the problem: http://www.hymntime.com/tch/test/html5/html5-multicolumn-test.htm The page uses a media selector, so your Chrome window must be at least 1280 pixels wide to see the effect. In fact, if you make the Chrome window less than 1280 pixels, you'll see the lyrics block change to a single column, of the same overall width. In other words, when Chrome shifts to 1-column to 2-column mode (due to the wider browser window), the lyrics block remains the same width, causing text to be squeezed together. Has anyone else seen this behavior, or know a solution? Is this a Chrome bug, or I am I doing something wrong? I posted this question on a Chrome forum a while back, but got no reply.

• Personal Activity Monitor tracks time you spend using desktop apps

  Up until a couple of years ago, I used to turn to RescueTime to figure out how I spend my time online. Then it got too complex, and I stopped using it. Personal Activity Monitor is like a vastly dumbed-down version of RescueTime, and I mean that as a compliment. It's free and bare-bones -- all it does is track what applications you're using and for how long. A big drawback at this point is that it doesn't integrate with Web browsers to help you analyze how you spend your time on the Web. Still, if your work doesn't require constant Web app use, knowing how long you've used a browser overall might be enough to help you manage your time. • Compiz features stopped working when an external monitor is attached

  Running 12.04 on a thinkpad T520 with nVidia NVIDIA Quadro NVS 4200M graphics. Just updated to the lasted nvidia 310 driver. Everything works great. However, as soon as I attached an external monitor using nvidia twinview, compiz features such as scale (moves all the active windows in one page) stopped working, as well as alt-tab to list all opened programs. Any ideas how i can fix this? never had this problem with 11.04. I can post my xorg.conf if that's of use to you. Thanks much! edit 1: I am using gnome3 classic edit 2: alt-tab works -- compiz application switcher (by default for gnome3 / unity) will crash gnome-classic, by changing to "static application switcher" in compiz seemed to solve the problem, but the scale still does not work when an external monitor is attached.

• Ubuntu move fullscreen window to other monitor?

  I have been using Cinnamon with Ubuntu for quite some time now and here with full screen applications (games and the like) I could press META to bring up the "start menu/tray" then right-click that application and "move to monitor - monitor 1" - I see no such button when right-clicking applications from tray on Ubuntu with Unity. I'd prefer being able to do it that way since I am more used to it, is there some way to enable it for Unity? • Macbook Pro Multiple Monitor Problem

  I have been using a Macbook pro (newest model) for about 4 weeks with dual monitors. It has been working great using the mac adaptor to dvi. Today however, my mac will not recognize it's built in monitor while the second monitor is plugged in. Plug in second monitor The screen on the laptop goes dark. The second monitor acts as the main screen. Click "Detect displays". Nothing happens Unplug the second monitor Screen on the laptop comes on. Any thoughts?

• Dell PR03X port replicator and DisplayPort to DVI adapter not detecting second monitor

  I have a Dell M4400 connected to a PR03X port replicator/docking station. I use the DVI port to connect it to a first Dell 2208WFP monitor and I'm trying to use a DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter to connect it to a second Dell 2208WFP monitor. The second monitor, connected via the DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter immediately goes into sleep mode and the laptop doesn't detect it. What is really weird is that it did detect it the first time I plugged it in but after I unplugged the monitor and plugged it back in it stopped working. I swapped the monitors round and it detected them both but after unplugging the monitor connected via the DisplayPort-to-DVI and plugging it in again it stopped working. Both monitors work if plugged in directly to the DVI port. Is there some way to force re-detection? Any ideas?
