  • Same SELECT used in an INSERT has different execution plan

    - by amacias
    A customer complained that a query and its INSERT counterpart had different execution plans, and of course, the INSERT was slower. First lets look at the SELECT : SELECT ua_tr_rundatetime,        ua_ch_treatmentcode,        ua_tr_treatmentcode,        ua_ch_cellid,        ua_tr_cellid FROM   (SELECT DISTINCT CH.treatmentcode AS UA_CH_TREATMENTCODE,                         CH.cellid        AS UA_CH_CELLID         FROM    CH,                 DL         WHERE  CH.contactdatetime > SYSDATE - 5                AND CH.treatmentcode = DL.treatmentcode) CH_CELLS,        (SELECT DISTINCT T.treatmentcode AS UA_TR_TREATMENTCODE,                         T.cellid        AS UA_TR_CELLID,                         T.rundatetime   AS UA_TR_RUNDATETIME         FROM    T,                 DL         WHERE  T.treatmentcode = DL.treatmentcode) TRT_CELLS WHERE  CH_CELLS.ua_ch_treatmentcode(+) = TRT_CELLS.ua_tr_treatmentcode;  The query has 2 DISTINCT subqueries.  The execution plan shows one with DISTICT Placement transformation applied and not the other. The view in Step 5 has the prefix VW_DTP which means DISTINCT Placement. -------------------------------------------------------------------- | Id  | Operation                    | Name            | Cost (%CPU) -------------------------------------------------------------------- |   0 | SELECT STATEMENT             |                 |   272K(100) |*  1 |  HASH JOIN OUTER             |                 |   272K  (1) |   2 |   VIEW                       |                 |  4408   (1) |   3 |    HASH UNIQUE               |                 |  4408   (1) |*  4 |     HASH JOIN                |                 |  4407   (1) |   5 |      VIEW                    | VW_DTP_48BAF62C |  1660   (2) |   6 |       HASH UNIQUE            |                 |  1660   (2) |   7 |        TABLE ACCESS FULL     | DL              |  1644   (1) |   8 |      TABLE ACCESS FULL       | T               |  2744   (1) |   9 |   VIEW                       |                 |   267K  (1) |  10 |    HASH UNIQUE               |                 |   267K  (1) |* 11 |     HASH JOIN                |                 |   267K  (1) |  12 |      PARTITION RANGE ITERATOR|                 |   266K  (1) |* 13 |       TABLE ACCESS FULL      | CH              |   266K  (1) |  14 |      TABLE ACCESS FULL       | DL              |  1644   (1) -------------------------------------------------------------------- Query Block Name / Object Alias (identified by operation id): -------------------------------------------------------------    1 - SEL$1    2 - SEL$AF418D5F / TRT_CELLS@SEL$1    3 - SEL$AF418D5F    5 - SEL$F6AECEDE / VW_DTP_48BAF62C@SEL$48BAF62C    6 - SEL$F6AECEDE    7 - SEL$F6AECEDE / DL@SEL$3    8 - SEL$AF418D5F / T@SEL$3    9 - SEL$2        / CH_CELLS@SEL$1   10 - SEL$2   13 - SEL$2        / CH@SEL$2   14 - SEL$2        / DL@SEL$2 Predicate Information (identified by operation id): ---------------------------------------------------    1 - access("CH_CELLS"."UA_CH_TREATMENTCODE"="TRT_CELLS"."UA_TR_TREATMENTCODE")    4 - access("T"."TREATMENTCODE"="ITEM_1")   11 - access("CH"."TREATMENTCODE"="DL"."TREATMENTCODE")   13 - filter("CH"."CONTACTDATETIME">SYSDATE@!-5) The outline shows PLACE_DISTINCT(@"SEL$3" "DL"@"SEL$3") indicating that the QB3 is the one that got the transformation. • SQL SERVER – Select Columns from Stored Procedure Resultset

    - by Pinal Dave
It is fun to go back to basics often. Here is the one classic question: “How to select columns from Stored Procedure Resultset?” Though Stored Procedure has been introduced many years ago, the question about retrieving columns from Stored Procedure is still very popular with beginners. Let us see the solution in quick steps. First we will create a sample stored procedure. CREATE PROCEDURE SampleSP AS SELECT 1 AS Col1, 2 AS Col2 UNION SELECT 11, 22 GO Now we will create a table where we will temporarily store the result set of stored procedures. We will be using INSERT INTO and EXEC command to retrieve the values and insert into temporary table. CREATE TABLE #TempTable (Col1 INT, Col2 INT) GO INSERT INTO #TempTable EXEC SampleSP GO Next we will retrieve our data from stored procedure. SELECT * FROM #TempTable GO Finally we will clean up all the objects which we have created. DROP TABLE #TempTable DROP PROCEDURE SampleSP GO Let me know if you want me to share such back to basic tips. • Multi-monitor Usage

    - by logan2
How many different applications do you use with a 2, 3, 4, 5 or more monitor setup? What's the most sophisticated multi-monitor setup you've seen? To be more specific, I would like to know exactly how you use your multi-monitor setup and how can I make better use of my own. How does someone take full advantage of a multi-monitor setup? And does having more monitors help your productivity?

  • T-SQL select where and group by date

    - by bconlon
T-SQL has never been my favorite language, but I need to use it on a fairly regular basis and every time I seem to Google the same things. So if I add it here, it might help others with the same issues, but it will also save me time later as I will know where to look for the answers!! 1. How do I SELECT FROM WHERE to filter on a DateTime column? As it happens this is easy but I always forget. You just put the DATE value in single quotes and in standard format: SELECT StartDate FROM Customer WHERE StartDate >= '2011-01-01' ORDER BY StartDate 2. How do I then GROUP BY and get a count by StartDate? Bit trickier, but you can use the built in DATEADD and DATEDIFF to set the TIME part to midnight, allowing the GROUP BY to have a consistent value to work on: SELECT DATEADD (d, DATEDIFF(d, 0, StartDate),0) [Customer Creation Date], COUNT(*) [Number Of New Customers] FROM Customer WHERE StartDate >= '2011-01-01' GROUP BY DATEADD(d, DATEDIFF(d, 0, StartDate),0) ORDER BY [Customer Creation Date] Note: [Customer Creation Date] and [Number Of New Customers] column alias just provide more readable column headers. 3. Finally, how can you format the DATETIME to only show the DATE part (after all the TIME part is now always midnight)? The built in CONVERT function allows you to convert the DATETIME to a CHAR array using a specific format. The format is a bit arbitrary and needs looking up, but 101 is the U.S. standard mm/dd/yyyy, and 103 is the U.K. standard dd/mm/yyyy. SELECT CONVERT(CHAR(10), DATEADD(d, DATEDIFF(d, 0, StartDate),0), 103) [Customer Creation Date], COUNT(*) [Number Of New Customers] FROM Customer WHERE StartDate >= '2011-01-01' GROUP BY DATEADD(d, DATEDIFF(d, 0, StartDate),0) ORDER BY [Customer Creation Date]  #

  • Most common parts of a SELECT SQL query?

    - by jnrbsn
I'm writing a function that generates a SELECT SQL query. (I'm not looking for a tool that already does this.) My function currently takes the following arguments which correspond to different parts of the SELECT query (the base table name is already known): where order fields joins group limit All of these arguments will be optional so that the function generates something like this by default: SELECT * FROM `table_name` I want to order the arguments so that the most often used parts of a SELECT query are first. That way the average call to the function will use as few of the arguments as possible rather than passing a null value or something like that to skip an argument. For example, if someone wanted to use the 1st and 3rd arguments but not the rest, they might have to pass a null value as the 2nd argument in order to skip it. So, for general purpose use, how should I order the arguments? Edit: To be more precise, out of the query parts I listed above, what is the order from most used to least used? Also, I'm not looking for solutions that allow me to not have to specify the order. Edit #2: The "fields" argument will default to "*" (i.e all fields/columns).

  • after BIOS splash, will not boot -- asks me to select an OS, but it just reboots

    - by user92040
I'm running Linux Mint 13 MATE 64-bit. Everything has been working for several weeks. Yesterday, when I tried to boot up my computer, after the BIOS screen flashes I reach a screen with a black background that reads at the top: GNU GRUB version1.99-21ubuntu3.4 Then there is a box in which I can select from the following lines: Linux Mint 13 MATE 64-bit, 3.2.0-31-generic (/dev/sdb2) Linux Mint 13 MATE 64-bit, 3.2.0-31-generic (/dev/sdb2) -- recovery mode Previous Linux versions Memory test (memtest86+) Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200) At the bottom it reads: Use the ? and ? keys to select which entry is highlighed. Press enter to boot the selected OS, 'e' to edit the commands before booting or 'c' for a command-line. I have no idea why it started doing this and, worse, I have no idea how to get out of here. No matter which option I select, I can't get it to boot the OS. If I select either of the first two, it reboots to splash the BIOS and then I'm right back where I started. If I choose "Previous Linux versions" I get essentially the same screen with only two choices (which are the same as the first two choices listed above, Linux 13 MATE and the recovery mode). Again, choosing either one of those results in a reboot. If I try to run either of the memtest options, it reads: error: unknown command 'linux16', Press any key to continue... Then it brings me back to the same screen Can anyone help me please? Intel Core i5-2500 ASUS P8Z68-V LX Intel Motherboard G. • Preserving multi-byte characters in Flex XML object

    - by Dan Petker
I'm having an issue with the Flex XML object type mangling multi-byte characters (such as Japanese or Chinese characters). The basic setup is this. I'm getting an XML-formatted string from the server, and in that string there can be multi-byte characters. A lot of the time, these characters are in attributes, for example: <example id="foo" name="[some multi-byte characters]"/> Now, when I examine the raw string, the multi-byte characters display just fine. However, as soon as I convert the string to an XML object using the top-level XML() function, all the multi-byte characters become mangled. I've tried setting the XML's encoding by including an <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> element in the XML-formatted string, but this doesn't seem to have any effect on the resulting XML object. Is there a way to get the XML object to respect the encoding of the XML-formatted string and prevent the multi-byte characters from being mangled?

  • jQuery: using select onchange event to fill sibling text field?

    - by gsquare567
<select onchange="$(self).siblings('input[type=text]').val( $(self).val() ); $(self).siblings('input[type=checkbox]').attr('checked','checked')"> that does not work before the select box, there are these inputs (examples): <input type="text" value="" id="product[14][value]" name="product[14][value]"> <input type="checkbox" value="1" id="product[14][enabled]" name="product[14][enabled]"> after debugging in firebug, i found that it is in fact finding the siblings, and the part that is failing is filling the text field with the select's value: .val( $(self).val() ); what's wrong with it? thanks!

  • Oracle/c#: How do i use bind variables with select statements to return multiple records?

    - by twiga
I have a question regarding Oracle bind variables and select statements. What I would like to achieve is do a select on a number different values for the primary key. I would like to pass these values via an array using bind values. select * from tb_customers where cust_id = :1 int[] cust_id = { 11, 23, 31, 44 , 51 }; I then bind a DataReader to get the values into a table. The problem is that the resulting table only contains a single record (for cust_id=51). Thus it seems that each statement is executed independently (as it should), but I would like the results to be available as a collective (single table). A workaround is to create a temporary table, insert all the values of cust_id and then do a join against tb_customers. The problem with this approach is that I would require temporary tables for every different type of primary key, as I would like to use this against a number of tables (some even have combined primary keys). Is there anything I am missing?

  • Is select() Ok to implement single socket read/write timeout ?

    - by chmike
I have an application processing network communication with blocking calls. Each thread manages a single connection. I've added a timeout on the read and write operation by using select prior to read or write on the socket. Select is known to be inefficient when dealing with large number of sockets. But is it ok, in term of performance to use it with a single socket or are there more efficient methods to add timeout support on single sockets calls ? The benefit of select is to be portable.

  • In mySQL, Is it possible to SELECT from two tables and merge the columns?

    - by Travis
If I have two tables in mysql that have similar columns... TABLEA id name somefield1 TABLEB id name somefield1 somefield2 How do I structure a SELECT statement so that I can SELECT from both tables simultaneously, and have the result sets merged for the columns that are the same? So for example, I am hoping to do something like... SELECT name, somefield1 FROM TABLEA, TABLEB WHERE name="mooseburgers"; ...and have the name, and somefield1 columns from both tables merged together in the result set. Thank-you for your help!

  • MySQL : select/join on strings as fieldnames - is this possible?

    - by Dylan
I can retrieve all column names from table 'categories' with : SELECT col.column_name FROM information_schema.columns AS col WHERE col.table_schema= database() and col.table_name = "categories" This produces a resultset like this : column_name ----------------- categoryID name description I can retrieve all values for a specific category with : SELECT * FROM categories AS c WHERE c.categoryID=12345 this results in a resultset like this: categoryID | name | description ------------------------------------------------ 12345 | test | this is a test Now I would like to get some kind of join of above selects to get a resultset that looks something like this : fieldname | value ---------------------------------------- categoryID | 12345 name | test description | this is a test Does anyone know if this is possible ? Can you do a join on strings that come from another select ?? The reason for this is that I'm writing a universal stored procedure that outputs all fields + their values from a table, without knowing what fields there are in the table. (The tablename is given in a parameter)

  • How do I perform a dynamic select in Linq?

    - by Matt Mangold
I am trying to figure out how to dynamically specify the properties for my select clause in a linq query. Lets say I have a collection of employee objects. At run time, the end user will be specifying which properties they would like to see for those employees, so I need to be able to dynamically construct my Linq select clause. I have used the dynamic Linq library, but I prefer not to use that, because it requires me to build a string to pass to the select method. I'd like to understand how to do this via Expressions.

  • How to use php variables (arrays) in mysql select statements?

    - by davidconn
Hi everybody, How do you use a php variable (array) inside a mysql select statement? I am designing an auction site and currently working on a page that lets people view a list of all the current bids for an item. I want to display 3 columns: amountbid - the amount each bidder has bid for the item (held in tblbid) bidderid - the id of each bidder who has bid (found in tbluser) total_positivity_feedback - how many users have left positive feedback for the bidder (calculated from tblfeedback) To find the 'amount' and the 'bidderid' columns i pass the essayid URL parameter from the previous page. This works fine. Despite this, i can't display the total_positivity_feedback column for the various users who have made each bid. My mysql query looks like this: select tblbid.bidderid, tblbid.amount, (select count(tblfeedback.feedbackid) from tblfeedback WHERE tblfeedback.writerid = "ARRAY VARIABLE GOES HERE") AS total_positivity_feedback FROM tblbid WHERE tblbid.essayid = $essayid_bids I assume that the only way to accomplish this is to make the variable contain the bidderid's of those people who bid for that particular essay? I can't seem to work out how to do this tho?!? Many thanks for your help

  • MD5 vertex skinning problem extending to multi-jointed skeleton (GPU Skinning)

    - by Soapy
Currently I'm trying to implement GPU skinning in my project. So far I have achieved single joint translation and rotation, and multi-jointed translation. The problem arises when I try to rotate a multi-jointed skeleton. The image above shows the current progress. The left image shows how the model should deform. The middle image shows how it deforms in my project. The right shows a better deform (still not right) inverting a certain value, which I will explain below. The way I get my animation data is by exporting it to the MD5 format (MD5mesh for mesh data and MD5anim for animation data). When I come to parse the animation data, for each frame, I check if the bone has a parent, if not, the data is passed in as is from the MD5anim file. If it does have a parent, I transform the bones position by the parents orientation, and the add this with the parents translation. Then the parent and child orientations get concatenated. This is covered at this website. if (Parent < 0){ ... // Save this data without editing it } else { Math3::vec3 rpos; Math3::quat pq = Parent.Quaternion; Math3::quat pqi(pq); pqi.InvertUnitQuat(); pqi.Normalise(); Math3::quat::RotateVector3(rpos, pq, jv); Math3::vec3 npos(rpos + Parent.Pos); this->Translation = npos; Math3::quat nq = pq * jq; nq.Normalise(); this->Quaternion = nq; } And to achieve the image to the right, all I need to do is to change Math3::quat::RotateVector3(rpos, pq, jv); to Math3::quat::RotateVector3(rpos, pqi, jv);, why is that? And this is my skinning shader. SkinningShader.vert #version 330 core smooth out vec2 vVaryingTexCoords; smooth out vec3 vVaryingNormals; smooth out vec4 vWeightColor; uniform mat4 MV; uniform mat4 MVP; uniform mat4 Pallete[55]; uniform mat4 invBindPose[55]; layout(location = 0) in vec3 vPos; layout(location = 1) in vec2 vTexCoords; layout(location = 2) in vec3 vNormals; layout(location = 3) in int vSkeleton[4]; layout(location = 4) in vec3 vWeight; void main() { vec4 wpos = vec4(vPos, 1.0); vec4 norm = vec4(vNormals, 0.0); vec4 weight = vec4(vWeight, (1.0f-(vWeight[0] + vWeight[1] + vWeight[2]))); normalize(weight); mat4 BoneTransform; for(int i = 0; i < 4; i++) { if(vSkeleton[i] != -1) { if(i == 0) { // These are interchangable for some reason // BoneTransform = ((invBindPose[vSkeleton[i]] * Pallete[vSkeleton[i]]) * weight[i]); BoneTransform = ((Pallete[vSkeleton[i]] * invBindPose[vSkeleton[i]]) * weight[i]); } else { // These are interchangable for some reason // BoneTransform += ((invBindPose[vSkeleton[i]] * Pallete[vSkeleton[i]]) * weight[i]); BoneTransform += ((Pallete[vSkeleton[i]] * invBindPose[vSkeleton[i]]) * weight[i]); } } } wpos = BoneTransform * wpos; vWeightColor = weight; vVaryingTexCoords = vTexCoords; vVaryingNormals = normalize(vec3(vec4(vNormals, 0.0) * MV)); gl_Position = wpos * MVP; } The Pallete matrices are the matrices calculated using the above code (a rotation and translation matrix get created from the translation and quaternion). The invBindPose matrices are simply the inverted matrices created from the joints in the MD5mesh file. Update 1 I looked at GLM to compare the values I get with my own implementation. They turn out to be exactly the same. So now i'm checking if there's a problem with matrix creation... Update 2 Looked at GLM again to compare matrix creation using quaternions. Turns out that's not the problem either.

  • Binding a select in a client template

I recently got a question on one of my client template posts asking me how to bind a select tags value to data in client templates. I was surprised not to find anything on the web addressing the problem, so I thought Id write a short post about it. It really is very simple once you know where to look. You just need to bind the value property of the select tag, like this: <select sys:value="{binding color}"> If you do it from markup like here, you just need to use the sys: prefix....Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. Take a look: here.
