  I was recording a video when my KODAK EASYSHARE M531 Digital Camera fell to the ground and turned off. When i turned it on nothing happened to the camera but the video file is somehow broken. Obviously the camera did not have time to convert and close it properly. $file myvid.avi myvid.AVI: data where it should be: another_vid.AVI: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 640 x 480, ~30 fps, video: Motion JPEG, audio: uLaw (stereo, 12000 Hz)` I would like to fix my video which I believe needs to be converted to AVI.   My dad's currently using windows movie maker to try to make a video out of a series of JPEG images and some MP3s. He's not very happy with it, since Windows movie maker seems to downsample the source images he's used, and not very efficently - despite them being the same resolution as the output WMM is supposed to make, and the replaygain based audio level normalisation on the tracks don't work. So, i'd want a free programme that has storyboard mode (else i'd use visualdub) that'll not try to change the resolution of images used to make a video (assuming all images are the same resolution), and preferably accept the normalised mp3 files we're using. WMM isn't a option, since Its what i'm trying to find a replacement for.

  I'm preparing a book to be published and keeping everything in .docx files. Other than text the files include graphs (jpeg) and lots of equations typed in MathType. Since MS Word is not fully appropriate to balance text and shapes according to book format, some pages are having spacings at the bottom after some text, and then comes a shape on the next page. I know that LaTeX is very good at formatting, so is it possible to convert MS Word documents (or PDF documents, since I can easily convert them to PDF) into LaTeX format so that I can handle my work in LaTeX from now on?

  I've generated a shell script that uses ImageMagick to convert and crop around 18000 images. • PDF with 200 DPI JPEGs look blurry in viewer

  I often scan images, and I usually do that as 200 DPI JPEG files. If I look at them in Gwenview (Linux image viewer) the text looks readable, and on 100% it looks perfectly sharp. When I convert them into a PDF, using convert from the Imagick package and open that in Okular or Evince (Linux document viewer) the text looks blurry. I wrote a little script that creates a HTML page with all the images and opens it in the browser. Firefox scales the images a little sharper than the PDF viewers. Firefox JPEGs: Evince PDF Is there any way to get the PDF to scale the images sharply?

  In the windows shell it is possible to modify the default action for opening any document type when holding down a modifier key such as shift or option when double clicking. So for example I can open a jpeg in irfanview if I just double click it, in firefox if I shift-double click it or in potatoshop if I option-double click it. However on a mac I have to right click, and choose "open with..", which can be annoying when there are a lot of possible candidates (such as with jpegs) or if I want to open the file with somehting like an applescript, which won't show up on the list and will have to be found in the file system and specified manually, every.. single.. time. Is there a way of making the mac open files differently by holding down modifier keys when double clicking?

• Not able to delete file from server with permissions of 644 via PHP script

  I am trying to delete JPEG files that were uploaded to the server via FTP. The files are uploaded and written with permissions of 644. The owner and group of the upload directory are mike and mike. I have tried changing the owner and group to www-data, but that does not seem to work. I am trying to delete the files with a PHP script using unlink(). This works on the production server (which is a hosting service), but not my development server, which is a LAMP setup. This leads me to believe it has something to do with permissions on my development server.

• Varnish doesn't seem to be caching

  I've setup a Varnish cache mirror to sit in front of a file server, but it seems to be endlessly re-downloading data from my file server. There's about 100GB of data in total, but so far Varnish has downloaded 800GB from my file server.   I'm using nginx + passenger. I'm trying to understand the nginx response 200 and 304. What does this both means? Sometimes, it responses back in 304 and others only 200. Reading the YUI blog, it seems browser needs the header "Last-Modified" to verify with the server. I'm wondering why the browser need to verify the last modified date. • Outlook 2007 Clients attachments not opening correctly

  Hello, Thanks for taking the time to read this. We are having an issue on our Terminal Server clients that has me perplexed. We are running Server2003 x64 and Exchange 2007 environment. When we attempt to open an attachment for example .jpeg and the user selects to open the file, it prompts them to select a program to open the file with. The file associations apear to be fine, if I save the document to the desktop and open it, it opens with the correct program automatically. If i select "always open using this program" it will then open automatically, but I don't want to have to do this for all file types we open regularly on each client. Is this some sort of Exchange server security setting that is forcing them to associate the file? Does outlook or exchange maintain its own file association database? Thanks for reading!

• Why Outlook 2007 pasted images are larger than original?

  I have been using Outlook 2007 for over a year with no image problems. Around September 1st, images that I paste into messages are enlarged in the messages. This happends with WinSnap, the Vista Snipping Tool, or any jpeg pasted into the message I tried jpegs with 96dpi settings w/o sucess I tried different Outlook Format Picture ... and Size ... settings Problem happens with both RTF and HTML messages Attached images are ok Something mysteriously changed and I cannot figure it out. I googled this to death without any success (others have the problem but there is no solution). This is driving me nuts because I snap screenshots all day long ("a picture is worth a thousand words"). Thanks in advance.

• Apache fails silently after installation of MapServer 6.2.0

  I've recently compiled MapServer 6.2 on a CentOS 6.3 machine, using ./configure --with-ogr=/usr/bin/gdal-config --with-gdal=/usr/bin/gdal-config --with-proj=/usr --with-geos=/usr/bin/geos-config --with-postgis=/usr/bin/pg_config --with-php=/usr/include/php --with-wfs --with-wfsclient --with-wmsclient --enable-debug --with-threads --with-wcs --with-sos --with-gd --with-freetype=/usr/bin --with-jpeg --with-cairo --with-curl if that is of interest, anyway. So after that, Apache/2.2.15 silently fails to restart, i.e. when apachectl graceful, it says "httpd not running, trying to start". There is nothing of interest in the Apache errors_log, /var/log/messages, and it is weird because so far it has always worked. Restarting the machine multiple times did not solve the problem. Some other stuff I did: [root@R12X0210 cgi-bin]# service httpd status httpd is stopped [root@R12X0210 cgi-bin]# ps aux|grep httpd root 1846 0.0 0.0 103236 864 pts/0 S+ 12:11 0:00 grep httpd I suspect this might have something to do with a php module that was altered/added by MapServer, but I don't really know... I don't even know how to properly debug this.

After some time It throws me error ext/intl/.libs/php_intl.o: In function `zm_startup_intl': php-5.4.8/ext/intl/php_intl.c:651: undefined reference to `spoofchecker_register_Spoofchecker_class' php-5.4.8/ext/intl/php_intl.c:654: undefined reference to `spoofchecker_register_constants' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make: *** [sapi/cli/php] Error 1 Spent lots of hours finding solutions. I can't come out of any. Does anyone know what this error exactly means? How to get rid of this error?

• Wine not finding some files

  I'm having strange issues with Wine : If I look a C:\windows\system32\drivers\ in wine explorer, the directory looks empty, while the directory ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/drivers is not. Plus, having the H: drive mapped to my home directory, I can look at H:\.wine\drive_c\windows\system32\drivers and it is not empty, the files are here ! Thus it seems Wine has the rights to access these files. So why don't they appear on the C: drive ? Some of my programs need them. • Zip files way larger on a Mac using Finder than the 'zip' command.. 2x larger.

  I have a directory of JPEG's. Each one is roughly 90k, as reported by Photoshop when saving, and also reported by the command line function 'ls'.. When I get the properties for the file with Finder, it's double that, over 220k. Zipping it with finder will also package this bulk as well. Doing the "zip -v test.zip ./dir" command will make a MUCH smaller zip file. Zipping the files on windows also results in a much smaller file size as well, roughly the same to that of the unix zip command. File sizes are also reported correctly on windows. I can't find any mention of this anywhere, so I'm asking here.

• Disk fragmentation when dealing with many small files

  On a daily basis we generate about 3.4 Million small jpeg files. We also delete about 3.4 Million 90 day old images. To date, we've dealt with this content by storing the images in a hierarchical manner. The heriarchy is something like this: /Year/Month/Day/Source/ This heirarchy allows us to effectively delete days worth of content across all sources. The files are stored on a Windows 2003 server connected to a 14 disk SATA RAID6. We've started having significant performance issues when writing-to and reading-from the disks. This may be due to the performance of the hardware, but I suspect that disk fragmentation bay be a culprit at well. Some people have recommended storing the data in a database, but I've been hesitant to do this. An other thought was to use some sort of container file, like a VHD or something. Does anyone have any advice for mitigating this kind of fragmentation?

  I'm planning to add a cloud storage to my personal backup strategy. But now I wonder if it really is worth the trouble of compressing my documents and photos. The Open XML-format already have zip-compression and JPEG is a lossy image format. So there really isn't much benefit in compressing. 20Mb of documents become about 17Mb at the ULTRA preset of 7-zip. One benefit I can imagine is that you can shorten upload time by archiving the folders since it minimizes the number of requests that is needed to be sent to the server at upload and download. So what are your thoughts and experience in this issue? Should you archive your documents before backing them up to the cloud?

• Sorting Files into Subfolders based on EXIF Date

  I have a huge directory from a HDD recovery that contains 70000+ JPEG files. I tried playing around with some AppleScripts, that I found, but had no luck. I already installed EXIFtool, which might be useful for this task. The current directory structure is as follows: dir001 - file0001.jpg ... - file9999.jpg dir002 - file0001.jpg ... - file9999.jpg ... dir070 - file0001.jpg - ... - file9999.jpg The files mostly have EXIF Data, but sometimes there are Files without metadata. Now I hope to be able to sort and rename these files into folders based on the date: 1999 - 1999 01 31 - 1999_01_31_-_22_59_59.jpg 2000 - 2000 05 20 - 2000_05_20_-_21_59_59.jpg - 2000_05_20_-_22_59_59.jpg I figured Applescript/Automator might come in handy for this, however every other solution would be welcome, too!
