  • Making the most of dual channel DDR2: how do I arrange the sticks?

    I've searched online, but I can't find anything definitive that will put me at ease. I turn to superuser. This is how I have the RAM sticks arranged now: To make the most of the RAM and the dual channel capability, it occurred to me that perhaps I have the sticks arranged incorrectly. Should I move the stick in the DDR2_2 slot one over--to the adjacent, red slot? I appreciate any suggestions. (BTW, can something in BIOS tell me whether I'm running at "optimal" memory speeds??) edit: I'm running Windows XP SP3, 32-bit. Thanks.

  • Cant ping ip on LAN. Port forward works fine though.

    I have a Solaris 11 machine running inside the LAN. It is a default install. I can access the machine and ping it if I ssh into my router (if it matters, it is running dd-wrt). I cannot ping the Solaris machine using ip address from any other machine inside the LAN. But if I setup port forwarding everything works perfectly fine. I can also use the port forward from outside the LAN (from my office) - which is good and how I want it to be. I can SSH and ping and do pretty much everything else from outside as well as inside but only as long as I have the port forwarded from my router. Why would I not be able to ping or ssh or even access the Solaris 11 machine from within the LAN - I have checked and couldn't find any firewall running on the Solaris 11 box. I even tried disabling every known firewall on the router (dd-wrt, it had something like SPI firewall running). I even tried setting a static IP for my Solaris box but all in vain! Please help me understand how and why this happens!! Thanks.

When I telnet from different box, I see the following $telnet 10.200.32.98 24 Trying 10.200.32.98... If I change the server to bind to *:7060 and set the following rule, it seems to work fine. iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 24 -j REDIRECT --to-port 7060 But that will make my server available on WAN interface which I don't like. I feel it had something to do with ipv6 socket (tcp6 line in netstat output). This whole thing is done on an Android device with custom built Android platform image. How do I get this working?

    I am writing a port scanner in Java and I want to be able to distinct the following 4 use cases: port is open port is open and server banner was read port is closed server is not live I have the following code: InetAddress address = InetAddress.getByName("google.com"); int[] ports = new int[]{21, 22, 23, 80, 443}; for (int i = 0; i < ports.length; i++) { int port = ports[i]; Socket socket = null; try { socket = new Socket(address, port); socket.setSoTimeout(500); System.out.println("port " + port + " open"); BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader( new InputStreamReader(socket.getInputStream())); String line = reader.readLine(); if (line != null) { System.out.println(line); } socket.close(); } catch (SocketTimeoutException ex) { // port was open but nothing was read from input stream ex.printStackTrace(); } catch (ConnectException ex) { // port is closed ex.printStackTrace(); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } finally { if (socket != null && !socket.isClosed()) { try { socket.close(); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } } } The problem is that I get a ConnectionException both when the port is closed and the server cannot be reached but with a different exception message: java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out: connect when the connection was never established and java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect when the port was closed so I cannot make the distinction between the two use cases without digging into the actual exception message. Same thing happens when I try a different approach for the socket creation. If I use: socket = new Socket(); socket.setSoTimeout(500); socket.connect(new InetSocketAddress(address, port), 1000); I have the same problem but with the SocketTimeoutException instead. I get a java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out if port was open but there was no banner to be read and java.net.SocketTimeoutException: connect timed out if server is not live or port is closed.     When I configure IIS to run a Web site on Port 1414, I get the following error: --------------------------- Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager --------------------------- The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070020) However, as according to netstat the port is not in use. Completely aside from IIS, I wrote a test program (just to open the port and test it): TcpListener tcpListener; tcpListener = new TcpListener(IPAddress.Any, port); try { tcpListener.Start(); Console.WriteLine("Press \"q\" key to quit."); ConsoleKeyInfo key; do { key = Console.ReadKey(); } while (key.KeyChar != 'q'); } catch (Exception ex) { Console.WriteLine(ex.Message); } tcpListener.Stop(); The result was an exception and the following ex.Message: An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions The port was available but its "access permissions" are not allowing me access. This remains after several restarts. The port is not reserved or in use as far as I know and while IIS says it is in use, netstat and my test program say it is not and my test program receives the error that I am not allowed to access the port. The test program ran elevated. The IIS Site is running MQSeries, but the MQ listener also cannot start on port 1414 because of this issue. A quick search of my registry found nothing interesting for port 1414. What are socket access permissions and how can I correct mine to allow access?

  • Setting up port forwarding for 7000 appliance VM in VirtualBox

    I've been using the 7000 appliance VM for a lot of testing lately and relied on others to set up the networking for the VM for me, but finally, I decided to take the dive and do it myself.  After some experimenting, I came up with a very brief number of steps to do this all using the VirtualBox CLI instead of the GUI. First download the VM image and unpack it somewhere.  I put it in /var/tmp. Then, set your VBOX_USER_HOME to some place with lots of disk space and import the VM: export VBOX_USER_HOME=/var/tmp/MyVirtualBoxVBoxManage import /var/tmp/simulator/vbox-2011.1.0.0.1.1.8/Sun\ ZFS\ Storage\ 7000.ovf (go get a cup of tea...) Then, set up port forwarding of the VM appliance BUI and shell:First set up port as NAT:VBoxManage modifyvm Sun_ZFS_Storage_7000 --nic1 nat Then set up rules for port forwarding (pick some unused port numbers):VBoxManage modifyvm Sun_ZFS_Storage_7000 --natpf1 "guestssh,tcp,,4622,,22"VBoxManage modifyvm Sun_ZFS_Storage_7000 --natpf1 "guestbui,tcp,,46215,,215" Verify the settings using:VBoxManage showvminfo Sun_ZFS_Storage_7000 | grep -i nic Start the appliance:$ VBoxHeadless --startvm Sun_ZFS_Storage_7000 & Connect to it using your favorite RDP client.  I use a Sun Ray, so I use the Sun Ray Windows Connector client: $ /opt/SUNWuttsc/bin/uttsc -g 800x600 -P <portnumber> <your-hostname> & The portnumber is displayed in the output of the --startvm command.(This did not work after I updated to VirtualBox 4.1.12, so maybe at this point, you need to use the VirtualBox GUI.) It takes a while to first bring up the VM, so please be patient. The longest time is in loading the smf service descriptions, but fortunately, that only needs to be done the first time the VM boots.  There is also a delay in just booting the appliance, so give it some time. Be sure to set the NIC rule on only one port and not all ports otherwise there will be a conflict in ports and it won't work. After going through the initial configuration screen, you can connect to it using ssh or your browser: ssh -p 45022 root@<your-host-name> https://<your-host-name>:45215 BTW, for the initial configuration, I only had to set the hostname and password.  The rest of the defaults were set by VirtualBox and seemed to work fine.

    If I use Dynamic DNS such as the free service at https://www.dyndns.com, do I still need to set up static IP and do port forward ? I have a DSL, most likely with dynamic IP address, and I run a Java servlet to get Paypal IPN messages on my notebook, in order for the messages to reach my notebook, I : [1] set up static IP and [2] did port forwarding. But I found each time the PC re-starts, it has a different external IP, so I was suggested to [3] get Dynamic DNS service like the free one mentioned above, but now I'm a bit confused, if I have step [3], do I still need to do [1] and [2], isn't step [3] supposed to do [1] and [2] for me ? But since I've already done [1],[2], now I wonder if they would cause trouble for step [3], do I need to undo them ? Or do I need all of them together ?

  • Website running on Tomcat port 8443 will only resolve with IP address, not dns

    I recently set up a web server running tomcat 7 on Ubuntu 12.04. It is currently running on port 8080, however I just enabled SSL on port 8443. Here's my problem: For port 8080, the website is resolved with DNS: (http://www.mywebpage.com:8080) For port 8443, I can only access the website with the IP Address (http://0.0.0.0:8443). It will not work if I use the DNS name. I ultimately want to disable port 80 and use port 8443 only. Does anyone know why I cannot resolve the website on port 8443 using DNS, and how I might fix it?   • Forward one RDP port on one machine to multiple external users at the same time

    We have a windows server 2003 machine with rdp service listening on the standard port 3389. For security reasons this port is not opened on the router, but we have freesshd service running and a remote admin can login via ssh and this port is forwarded to external port 33001 for the first external user. This works great. Now we have another admin who wants to work remote (he uses a different windows account, but needs to work on the same machine.) So this is basically a ssh port forwarding question. Will the other user be able to login at the same time using the same port 33001 ? Please keep in mind that there will be a second tunnel, and this second tunnel will also use the local port 3389 on the windows server.

    It seems that the serial port has a remarkable ability to stick around. You might call it the hardware equivalent of Windows XP. Despite pretty much physically disappearing from laptops and the like, the need to use a serial port still exists, even if it means using a converter of some sort. It is very much a legacy piece of hardware, and yet so many devices and instruments still use it. I use it myself daily in my work with PLC's, HMI's, barcode readers, etc. In my opinion, I don't think it is going anywhere soon, but how long do you think it has got before joining the museum? Do you think it ever will?

Unfortunately, the only way into the network I have at the moment is SSH to another machine on the same network. me ---|---SSH Box----Home Router My Google foo seems to have abandoned me, I couldn't didn't find anything helpful. Any ideas? Thanks! To clarify: I'm not at home right now. I do however have access to one machine on the network (a QNAP NAS) over SSH. I need to access the home router web interface on port 80 from my notebook which is outside of the home network.

    I'm Confused from the fact that Vlan tagging is done at access port and trunk port always gets tagged packets (until its case of native vlan).But I still believe in other fact which says tagging happen only when a frame hit the trunk port which means trunk port gets untagged frame and tagging is not possible at access port. Would like to know where actually this tagging happens ? and also which command we can use to encapsulate 802.1q protocol to access port ? The way we do at trunk port is switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q Is the above command applicable for access mode also?

  • Open ports broken from internal network

    Quick summary: Forwarded port works from the outside world, but from the internal network using the external IP the connection is refused. This is a simplified situation to make the explanation easier: I have a computer that is running a service on port 12345. This computer has an internal IP 192.168.1.100 and is connected directly to a modem/router which has internal IP 192.168.1.1 and external (public, static) IP 1.2.3.4. (The router is TP-LINK TD-w8960N) I have set up port forwarding (virtual server) at port 12345 to go to port 12345 at 192.168.1.100. If I run telnet 192.168.1.100 12345 from the same computer everything works. But running telnet 1.2.3.4 12345 says connection refused. If I do this on another computer (on the same internal network, connected to the router) the same thing happens. This would seem like the port forwarding is not working. However... If I run a online port checking service on my external IP and the service port it says the port is open and I can see the remote server connecting and immediately closing connection. And using another computer that is connected to the internet using a mobile connection I can also use telnet 1.2.3.4 12345 and I get a working connection. So the port forwarding seems to be working, however using external IP from the internal network doesn't. I have no idea what can be causing this, since another setup very much like this (different router) works for me. I can access a service running on a server from inside the network both through the internal and external IP.

  • Router behind Router--second router (and its clients) cannot be "seen" even after both routers are D

    Couple of terminology I guess I should get out of the way for consistency's sake throughout the post: External Router/Modem - SMC 8014WG - External IP 173.32.144.134 - Internal IP 192.168.0.1 Internal Router - LinkSys WRT120N - "External" IP of 192.168.0.175 - Internal IP 192.168.1.1 - Connected via Ethernet Cable (a really long one, from the basement to the second floor) PC - IP 192.168.200 - Connected Wirelessly via WAP2 Personal. Laptop - Used to try and diagnose the problem, a 4th machine to the setup which won't be part of the final setup once everything works. The actual problem: I've tried setting the LinkySys router as a DMZ'd client on the SMC router, and then DMZ'd the actual PC on the LinkSys. So the DMZ looks like this: On the SMZ, client with IP 192.168.0.175 is DMZ'd. On the LinkSys, client with IP 192.168.1.200 is DMZ'd. No dice. I then tried port forwarding the necessary port on the SMC to the LinkSys (lets just say, port 80). Then port forwarded Port 80 on the LinkSys to the PC. Same as the DMZ scenario above, but change DMZ with port forwarding. No dice, still :(. Now here's where I went stupid--and tell me if one should never do this--I enabled both DMZ and port forwarding at the same time. I fired up Opera--my browser of choice ;)--typed in 173.32.144.134:6333 and... ... Third time is the charm they say? Well, clearly not. Otherwise I wouldn't be here ;). To diagnose the problem, I enabled "Allow remote access to the Admin panel" on the LinkSys router, and specified port 6333 as the port to use. I port forwarded port 6333 on the SMC to 192.168.0.175, and access my external IP of 173.32.144.134:6333 in hopes of seeing the Admin panel... No dice (I think I've ran out of dice by now ;)). So to see where the problem was, I connected a laptop to the SMC via LAN cable, and typed in 192.168.0.175:6333, and viola, Admin Panel access! So the problem looks like it lies with the SMC--But that's as far as I've got, I've done the port forwarding, the DMZ'ing, and I've even disabled the built-in firewall for safe measures, but nothing worked. So, here I am. Unable to connect to the PC behind the Internal router externally, and without anything to go on other than to come here and ask for the wisdom of the the superuser folks :). If any more detail is required, just ask. (Apologies in advance, if questions should never be this long winded!)

  • Hosting website when port 80 is taken?

    A few months ago, we purchased an R-HUB unit to replace WebEx for remote support. The device operates through port 80, ehich doesn't appear to be configurable. I know in IIS, you can specify a port besides port 80, but the problem is in the port forwarding. On our router, we have to map an incoming port to the forward port which then directs traffic to the node (webserver). However, the incoming port for both the webserver and the R-HUB is 80 - and the server seems to be getting confused as I can only get to the R-HUB, not the website. How can I expose both devices? Host header headers? DNS config?

  • Server IP must be a LAN IP (Port Forwarding Netgear Router)? [closed]

    I'm trying to set up a server (Apache) on my computer (fairly new to it). As I understand it, for it to be accessible to other computers, I need to forward port 80. When I try to forward the port though, I get the error: Server IP must be a LAN IP. I noticed in ipconfig that my default gateway is different than my wireless router. My computer is not hardwired, not on WiFi. Furthermore, I do not, at this point, have a static IP. I read that it should still work with a dynamic IP until it changes. Any ideas on what I can do? I'm using Windows 7 in case it matters.

  • IIS FTP 7.5 Data Channel Problem (SSL)

    Hey there I wonder if anyone can get me in the right direction. I am setting up both a FTPS Client and Server, FTPS Server using Microsoft’s iis FTP 7.5. On the client side it will be running on Linux and I am using M2crypto for the openssl wrapping (python). I am worried the problem is on the server side (iis7.5) due to the following discovery : If I host using Filezilla with BOTH the control and data channel being forced to be encrypted it works 100% (100% file transmission), if i use iis as the server everything works up to the point when the data channel takes over... i.e. all data of the retrieved file is already received correctly in my basket! The ftp server just won't send the final '226 Transfer complete.' on the cmd socket. Why? If i force the client or server to close the connection the file is 100% intact....If i use iis 7.5 with forced encryption on control channel all works 100% as long as i don’t force data channel... Here are some screenshots to demo this... Client View after Kill Client : pics @ http://forums.iis.net/p/1172936/1960994.aspx#1960994 Summary : We can establish the connection, do directory listings, start the upload, see the file (0bytes) created on the server but then the client hangs. If we terminate the client, the uploaded file on the server suddenly jumps up to full size.
