• Windows 2003 - RAS service - VPN client can only connect to server, not internal network

  Here is my diagram http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/263/vpnt.png/ Server has two NIC: One connect to Internet, one connect to internal network. RAS service is configured with static IP pool on the same subnet of internal network (10.10.0.x). The problem is when a client connect to server, client can connect to server(10.10.0.10), but cannot connect to another host locate in internal network (10.10.0.11) even cannot ping to 10.10.0.50. RAS configured with IP routing enabled, client connect with options: Use default gateway on remote network. I'm messed up and can not figure out what wrong. Please help me T_T. TIA, giobuon

• Windows Server 2003 stops sharing a folder when the server reboots [closed]

  I have a file server that will stop sharing a particular folder once the server is rebooted. This problem happened after the server went through a p2v migration. There are no events that seem to correlate to this issue. I was reading http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/870964 but I don't think this applies and there are other shares on the same drive that are still there after a reboot. To be clear about the issue; When the server reboots share x is no longer shared any more but share y and z are still there. This has nothing to do with users not being able to see the share. On the server its self the folder that was shared is no longer shared. I wish I had more information to post but after hours on this issue I can't find a way to move forward.

• Exchange 2003 Internet Mail Size Limits

  I have unsuccessfully tried to increase per user incoming mail size settings by editing their user account settings on our Exchange server, but large incoming mail from external domains is still blocked using the default global settings. After reading here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;322679 I see that All Internet e-mail messages use the global setting for limits on sending and on receiving. The message categorizer evaluates the sender's sending limit and the recipient's receiving limit. In example 2 earlier, a user with a user mailbox limit of 3 MB could receive messages from another user with a 3-MB sending limit. Because Internet users use the global setting, they can send only a 2-MB message. Which to me is madness! Surely if I want to allow a user to receive mail up to a certain size then I should be able to set it as such? Is there a specific way of getting round this? Would setting the global defaults high and setting a lower, say 10MB, limit on the SMTP connector do the trick? Thanks.

• Server 2003 slow share.

  I am running an 03 box with shares active. When uploading to the share, the speed is average. About 15-20 mbps.. But when you think about it, it is bad because it is a direct connection to a couple machines. When uploading to another server the connection speed is twice that of the direct storage. When uploading s massive folder, 250 GB, the upload will start as normal, but as it progresses it drops in speed. Now it is sitting at around 2-7 Mbps. Any ideas on how i can boost the transfer rate? On a side note, the download speed is great. It is a speed that you would expect from this setup, the main problem is uploading and what is causing the extreme slowness in speeds. Any help would be great.

• Scripted redirection for Outlook 2003

  We have a staff member in sales who has gone onto a 4 day week (getting ready for retirement), so each Thursday afternoon her email needs to be forwarded to another user and each Friday afternoon it needs to be set back. I'm using the VBS script below to do this, run via the Task Scheduler. Although the script appears to do it's job, based on what I see when I view the user's Exchange settings, Exchange doesn't always recognise that the setting has changed. e.g. Last Thursday the forwarding was a enabled and worked correctly. On Friday the script did it's thing to clear the forwarding but Exchange continued to forward messages all weekend. I found that I can force Exchange to honour the changed setting be merely opening and closing the user's properties in ADUC. Of course I don't want to have to do that. Is there a non-manual way I can have Exchange read and honour the setting? I'm trying putting the logon script under the user's profile, putting the logon script under the Group Policy Object logon script section. Please help, none of the network shares are being mounted.

• Windows Server 2003 (w/Exchange) move to new machine

  I have an ageing domain controller (the only one on a 10-pc network) which needs rebooting often. I have a Dell Poweredge 2850 server doing nothing, so I'd like to move the DC to that, but here's the catch - I don't have Win2k Server Std install media any more as it's been lost. I purchased "Easus Todo Backup Advanced Server" which claims to be able to recover to dissimilar metal, but it's not quite working (although I don't think it's the product's fault) I know the server and PERC RAID card are good because I installed Ubuntu on the logical drive (4 x 72GB disks RAID 5) no problems. I've booted frmo the Easus Todo backup CD (which is WinPE based) and recovered to the logical disk on the RAID (after installing driver inside the WinPE environment from a NAS drive) The problem is when I boot the server, I can get the OS selection menu, but any option results in a blank screen, with no errors. I figure this is probably because the driver wasn't installed on the old machine (which is IDE-based (i know, i know!) and doesn;t have a RAID controller) I've booted from the CD and copied the mraid35x.sys file to the c:\windows\system32\drivers folder on the recovered system, but it makes no difference. I made a boot.ini with rdisks 0-10 defined, and booting from each of these resulted in a file error (i.e. 'this isn't a real disk') - the only disk that gets any response (the blank screen) is multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) which just gives me the blank black screen and no disk activity. Is there any way I can force the drvier to be installed on the source system (so i can do a full backup again), i've tried right-clicking the oemsetup.inf and clicking install, but it didn't actually do anything. I attempted to force it with the 'Add new hardware' wizard and forcing with the 'have disk' option but it still gave me no hardware to select. Also I've got an identical machine running WinXP which uses the PERC driver successfully (which was obviously done at install time) and the boot.ini settings are the same : multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) Any ideas would be appreciated.

• SBS 2003 CEICW - Multiple IP's causing error

  two IP adresses (different subnets) are assigned to one networkcard. In the Properties window the order is right, however the Server always picks the wrong one as the "default ip". This causes CEICW to fail with an "The DHCP Server service is started, but the DHCP scope does not match the network address of the server's local area network (LAN) adapter." error. The DHCP Server is installed and configured, but not for the other subnet as it is not needed. If i remove the other subnets IP everything works fine. Is there any way around that without temporarily removing the IP adress or configuring DHCP for one more Subnet?

• Maintain share permissions migrating from Windows 2003 to Samba 3.5 or 4

  The title says it all. I'm interested in replacing a Windows file server with a Linux Samba file server, but the caveat is that share/folder permissions must be preserved. We'd be using the new active directory authentication in Samba, so the two servers would at least be in the same domain to make things a little simpler, and all the users/groups are domain-level users/groups. Does anyone know if this is possible?

• Exchange 2003 inbound routing issue

  Just recently we started experiencing inbound routing issues. Email adddressed to [email protected] is intermittantly translated to [email protected]. This is happening for several users and, as stated, is intermittant. I don't know where to start looking for the solution. Is this an Exchange issue? A DNS issue? We have a single Exchange server inside our network with an FQDN of server.domain.local with a single SMTP Virtual Server. The Advanced properties of the Delivery tab of the Virt Server has an empty Masquerade Domain textbox and the value for the FDQN text-box is set to the domain itself, domain.com. The DNS record for domain.com is a CNAME entry referencing www.domain.com. Is this somehow related to the problem? I checked the headers of the inbound messages that generated NDRs as a result of being sent to [email protected] and nowhere in the header is www.domain.com mentioned. To make my life even more difficult, we use Postini as a third-party SPAM filtering service. Our MX records point to the Postini servers and Postini delivers the messages to our server. Perhaps it is Postini that is mucking things up? sigh I'm having trouble with this one and the intermittent aspect is making it that much more difficult for me. Any ideas?

I have admin rights and can set the security for a folder to give me full access but when I switch the check box for read only off then exit out and open the properties back up it is checked. It is a grayed out check box if that helps. I just don't know how I have read/write access but can't switch off read only for a particular folder. Thanks

• Trying to reinstalling .net framework 4 on windows server 2003 SP2

  I had a problem with an application that was using .net framework 4. So I tried to fix the installation but it didn't solved. So I proceed to uninstall the framework and install it again. But then the problems started... the setup just wouldn't finish to download the framework. So i tried the full installer, and then it got stuck (freezes) at "installing client profile"... The server works well but the installation progress bar just stays at the same place (but the "wheel" keeps turning, like it was doing something, but stays like this for hours...) I tried the .net clean unistall software but the problem remains. I'm all out of ideas... I've searched the web but couldn't solve the problem with any solution I found... Any ideas on how to force the installation?

  We have a lab server RDE becomes blank screen after sometime though it connects . When we login , it just shows the blank desktop with nothing visible , just the wallpaper . Citrix takes long time to connect and if it does ( it takes long time "checking credential " screen even ) , it will also show a similar blank screen . Can anyone suggest where/what to look for to trouble shoot this issue . Let me know if u want any further details . The lab works well and fine when we do a reboot and then the same problem happens after an hour or so ...

  Hi There, In my part time position as entire IT department at my Office ( I'm a MCSD developer normally ) I have been asked to change a shared folder. Only I don't really understand all the Shared / Security options. I have a folder that must be accessed by 2 people in the company (and no one else). They both must have read/write/edit and change access. They must be able to read/write/edit each others files; existing or newly created. Should be easy but I'm a bit overwhelemd by all the choices. • 100% CPU use when new usb device plugged in - services.exe / Windows Server 2003

  On my server I am trying to install a new usb drive but all that happens is that the system starts using huge amounts of processor cycles with services.exe. On closer inspection with process explorer there is a thread called umpnpmgr.dll using most of the services.exe processor time. I left it for a half hour and still nothing happened. Rebooted and tried again, same result. Tried a different usb drive, then a flash drive but still same issue. Tried updating driver but it said the update function was already in action. I have used process explorer to kill the thread now so the server can still perform its intended functions. Any device that was previously installed before this began happening will still work but any device new to the system will not. My question(s) is/are: Is there a way to manually install the device into the registry so Windows thinks it is a previously installed device? Or can this problem be repaired through anything other than a reinstall? To do a reinstall would mean backing up large amounts of data which is hard with a usb drive and insufficient space on all other network machines. Any help would be greatly appreciated. William

I know how to do it in Windows server 2008 based CA, with the new version (version 3) - it is possible to specify the hash algorithm (Under the "Cryptography" tab of the template properties).   When opening a temporary file, Powerpoint 2010 usually creates a temporary, hidden file called ~$filename.pptx in the same directory. This is undesirable, since it can cause unnecessary activity with e.g. Dropbox. Furthermore, the "Documents" folder should not be used for temporary files -- we have the %TEMP% folder for that. So, is it possible to have Powerpoint create its temporary files in %TEMP% instead?   I'm teaching PowerPoint 2010 and it's got some great new features. Unfortunately, one that I can't wrap my head around is the the new "Color Temperature" feature for pictures. I do understand color temperature in general (i.e. the lower the number, the "colder"/"oranger" - the higher the number, the "hotter"/"bluer"). The way PowerPoint implements it seems opposite from most other programs - like Photo Filter in Photoshop. So I need to understand what this feature is in more detail so I can explain it to my students. Does anyone know?

• How to auto advance a PowerPoint slide after an exit animation is over?

  PowerPoint entrance animation set up with "Start: With Previous" starts right when a new slide is advanced. However, if you set up an exit animation in the same way, it doesn't start with a slide ending sequence. Instead, the "Start: On Click" trigger needs to be used and after your exit animation is over you still need one extra click just to advance to the next slide. Workarounds to this are obvious: create a duplicate slide, make your ending animations from the original slide being your starting animations on the duplicate slide and let them be followed with whatever you want or create a transition slide with those ending animations only and set up "Change Advance slide - Automatically after - [the time it takes your animations to finish]". These workarounds will make it work for your audience, visually. However, it has an impact on slide numbers you might need to adjust accordingly and/or duplicate content changes. If you are the only one creating and using your presentation, this might be just fine. But if you are creating a presentation in collaborative mode with three other people and don't even know who will be the presenter at the end, you can mess things up. Let's be specific: most of my slides have 0.2s fly in entrance animation applied to blocks of content coming from right, bottom or left. Advancing to the next slide I want them to fly out in another 0.2s exit animation being followed by new slide 0.2s fly in entrance animation of the new blocks. The swapping of the blocks should be triggered while advancing to the next slide, as usually. As mentioned, I'm not able to achieve this without one extra click between the slides. I wrote a VBA script that should start together with an exit animation and will auto advance a slide after 0.3s when the exit animation is over. That way I should get rid of those extra clicks which are needed right now. Anyway, I don't want to bind the macro to any other workaround object but the slide itself. Anyone knows how to trigger a PowerPoint VBA script on slide onclick event? Anyone knows a secret setting that will make the exit animation work as expected i.e. animating right before exiting a slide while transitioning to the next one? Anyone knows how to beat this dragon? • Problem detecting installed application on Win Svr 2003 x64

  I have an x86 Windows application that consists of a couple of services and a client ui. Due to various issues with persuading the various MSIs to upgrade properly, the installation process is now governed by a wizard-style program that detects what is currently installed and handles upgrades by storing the user's current settings, uninstalling the existing software and installing the new version(s). The basic process is: Look in HKLM\Software\Classes\Installer\Products Loop through the GUID keys therein looking for ProductName="(my app name)" If not found, repeat starting from HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products instead If found, offer the user an upgrade (as described earlier) else a clean install (i.e. user is asked various questions by the wizard) Now, this works just fine on pretty much any Windows platform you care to mention, from XP up. It fails only on Windows Server 2003 x64, in that an existing installation is not detected by the wizard - despite the exact same registry keys being present as are on any other platform I test on. It's fine on: XP x32 Vista x32, x64 Server 2003 x86 Server 2008 x86, x64 Server 2008 R2 x64 Windows 7 x86, x64 It's only Server 2003 x64 that seems to exhibit this issue.

• Embedding a WMV file on the web via URL in a Powerpoint presentation

  I've got a situation where I want to distribute a Powerpoint presentation to several people. I want to be able to embed several large videos in this presentation by linking to a URL, for the following specific reasons: the videos are highly confidential, and I would like to be able to delete them at some later date, but still allow them to see it in the presentation while it is online. I want to send the presentation via email (so it should be small), and put the links on a server with a faster upload speed Maybe I'd like to change the video at some point without changing the presentation One option that addresses #1 is to hook up a webcam and allow them to see video stream from the office, but our upload rate is too slow for this to be a viable option. I've tried embedding a video and giving Powerpoint the URL. It seems to work initially, because the first frame appears in my slideshow. However, when I play the slideshow, nothing happens. I looked at the network traffic on my computer, and nothing was getting downloaded from the remote server. Any suggestions on how to make this work, or how to at least satisfy the criteria listed above would be great!
