• Installing Windows on multiple computers

  At our work we've decided to buy SSDs to speed up our computers. We'd also like to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 (read clean install) I'm talking about 10 computers which going to have a fully clean installation. Is there any trick I can use to avoid installing Windows 10 times? The computers (most of them) are different in hardware, so I think duping is no good option. What can I do? I'd like to spend as less time as possible because all computers are going to need SQL Management Studio and Visual Studio 2012/2013. Thanks!

• Exchange over HTTP

  I have recently setup a brand new install of SBS 2011 and it is working well. Exchange is running as advertised and all users are happy. Now, there are 2 users who would like to work outside of the office and require email setting up in Outlook. No problem - Exchange over HTTP. However for some reason it's not working. They can access Outlook Web Access okay, but for some reason Exchange over HTTP / HTTPS isn't working. The error message I receive in Outlook is: "The name cannot be resolved. The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action." I've tried temporarily turning off the Firewall on both the server and the client but this doesn't help at all. Is there something I'm missing or is there a permission that needs enabling to allow Exchange over HTTP to work?? Many thanks

• Macbook Pro - Disk Locked HD needs repair, can't reinstall OSX

  I basically have the same problem. A friends HD was acting badly. Ran Disk Repair Util many times. Says disk needs repair but it won't repair it. I re formatted and installed 10.8 but that hasn't fixed it. Ive tried partitioning it and that won't work. Now I'm trying to get system 10.8 to reinstall and it says the disk is locked. Your fix requires Terminal, is that right? How do I open terminal to run your fix? Please help if you can. Disk Warrior couldn't fix it. I think the disk is bad. What do you think?

• Synergy configuration with multiple X screens

  I'm having a problem figuring out how to configure synergy to behave on a system with multiple X windows. On my desktop I am running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I have two monitors, setup as separate X screens by preference as well as to enable me to rotate the left-hand monitor. I also have a laptop, which I have on the desk in front of me, lower than the other two monitors. I have a very simple synergy.conf: section: screens desktop: laptop.local: end section: links desktop: down = laptop laptop: up = desktop end It works, but on the desktop only on whichever screen I run synergys from in terminal (I haven't set it up to run at startup yet because I've been playing with the configuration). I can't find any information how to reference multiple screens on one system, and would appreciate any help.

• Solaris: What is the difference between .so and .so.1 files?

  I am trying to understand how/why certain library files are dynamically loaded by the linker on Solaris. I am using ldd to see this (with the -s switch to see what paths are tried by the linker). As an example, if I run "ldd /usr/local/bin/isql -s" I notice that one of the libraries that is searched for is called "libodbc.so.1". I notice that this does NOT match a file it finds along the way called "libodbc.so". So, it finally resolves to a place where there is a symbolic link between "libodbc.so.1.0.0" and "libodbc.so.1". My question is - what is the significance of the ".1" here? Is it to indicate a version number? Why do some installers create these symbolic links, while others don't?

• Why is my nginx alias not working?

  I'm trying to set up an alias so when someone accesses /phpmyadmin/, nginx will pull it from /home/phpmyadmin/ rather than from the usual document root. However, everytime I pull up the URL, it gives me a 404 on all items not pulled through fastcgi. fastcgi seems to be working fine, whereas the rest is not. strace is telling me it's trying to pull everything else from the usual document root, yet I can't figure out why. Can anyone provide some insight? • Is my Power Supply Unit fried?

  So my laptop just started smoking where I plug my charger in. I run a netbook, the Acer Aspire One. My charger won't charge it, because when I plug my charger into the netbook, the charging light that indicates the netbook is receiving power turns off. Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot where the problem is and what should I do now? Is just my charger fried and should I replace it. Or could there also be a problem with my netbook and do I need to look for other problems?

• Why do Apache access logs - timer resolution issue?

  When going through Apache 2.2 access logs, logging with the %D directive (The time taken to serve the request, in microseconds), that it's very common for a 200 response to have a given number of bytes, but a "time to serve" of zero. For example, a given URL might be requested 10 times in a single day, and a 200 response is sent for them all, and all return, say 1000 bytes. However, 7 of them have a "time to serve" of zero, while the other 3 have a time to serve of 1 second. Is this simply because the request was served faster than the resolution of the timer Apache uses?

• How can I do a bulk caller ID lookup (reverse phone lookup) on a list of phone numbers?

  I have a tab-delimited text file with all of the phone numbers I've called or received calls from in the past year. The phone numbers are all based in the US, so the format is ###-###-####. For tax purposes, I need to know which calls were personal and which ones were business-related. I could enter them all one-by-one into Google, but that will take forever because there are hundreds of numbers to check. Is there a program, MS Office plugin, or website that I can use to look up all of the numbers at once? If not, is there some way to create an Excel macro to do the lookups for me?

• Outlook 2013 Win 7 64 bit

  I am using Outlook 2013, and on some messages I can see the Other actions > View Source, but other messages I don't see it, I suspect somehow it has been disabled. Any suggestions as to how to see the source? I Tried adding a shortcut to this option to the Quick Bar list, on the messages in question, the shorcut disappears. I have also tried to alter registry, but I don't wnat to. I used to be able to right clight in the message to see the source, why is everything so hard now?

  I have a desktop background image (a picture) in a half-dozen different resolutions, that I'd like to deploy to a disparate collection of computers with different monitors and video cards and whatnot. Laptops, netbooks, desktops, widescreen, and even a couple of "tall" screens. I have images to cover most of the cases. I would like Windows 7 to correctly pick the correct desktop background image via group policy. Now, the logon screen is already done. The OEMBackground method is rather clever, and lets you copy files of different resolutions to the machine, and the logon app will calculate the aspect ratio of the monitor and match it to a file as closely as possible. Is there any way to have that functionality on the desktop background as well?

• Windows XP alt-tab: How to restrict options to certain applications, in certain order and exclude others?

  In Windows XP Alt-tab keypress sequence to select applications, how can I ensure that certain applications always appear, in a certain order, with others always excluded? Background for asking is that most XP-based machines that I am working with on a shop floor present the list of shortcuts in a certain order and certain applications. There is one machine however, that displays an additional application. This is a hindrance to the users of the machines, as the nature of their work is routine and this variation disrupts the remembered sequence, "disrupts their flow". Thoughts? Being a good superuser, I research first before asking, and I found: Applications randomly alt-tab? (especially full screen games) Restore Alt-Tab behavior so that minimizing an app once again moves it to the end? (2. looks close to the control I need, but would need more finer, preciser control over what appears in the selection). Suggestions? (Thanks in advance.)

• How to chain GRUB2 for Ubuntu 10.04 from Truecrypt & its bootloader (multi boot alongside Windows XP partition)?

  I want Truecrypt to ask for password for Windows XP as usual but with the standard [ESC] option, on selecting that, i.e via Escape key, I want it to find the grub for the (unencrypted) Ubuntu install. I've installed Windows XP on the 120Gb hard drive of a Toshiba NB100 netbook then partitioned to make room for Ubuntu 10.04 and installed that after the Windows XP install. When I encrypt Windows XP, Truecrypt will overwrite the grub entry in the master boot record (MBR), I believe (?) and I won't be able to choose between XP and Ubuntu anymore. So I need to restore it back. I've searched fairly extensively for answers on Ubuntu forums and elsewhere but have not yet found a complete answer that covers all eventualities, scenarios and error messages, or otherwise they talk of legacy GRUB and not GRUB2. Ubuntu 10.04 uses GRUB2. My setup: Partitions: Windows XP, NTFS (to be encrypted with Truecrypt), 40Gb /boot (Ext4, 1Gb) Ubuntu swap, 4Gb Ubuntu / (root) - main filesystem (20gb) NTFS share, 55Gb I know that the Truecrypt boot loader replaces the GRUB when boot up because I've already tried it on another laptop. I want boot loader screen to look something like the usual: Truecrypt Enter password: (or [ESC] to skip) password is for WindowsXP and on pressing [ESC] for it to find the Ubuntu grub to boot from Thanks in advance for your help. The key area of the problem is how to instruct Truecrypt when escape key is pressed, and how the Grub/Ubuntu can be made visible to the truecrypt bootloader to find it, when the esc key is pressed. Also knowing as chaining.

• Drive still usable if Seatools reports errors?

  I have a Seagate 3TB Expansion Desktop drive that was part of a Linux RAID 6 array that failed. I eventually did a zero fill both through Seagate DiscWizard and via Linux dd, neither reported errors. When I ran Seatools now, I got: Short DST - Started 5/31/2014 10:04:36 PM Short DST - Pass 5/31/2014 10:05:37 PM Long Generic - Started 5/31/2014 10:15:19 PM Bad LBA: 518242762 Not Repaired (whole bunch of bad LBAs ommited) Bad LBA: 518715255 Not Repaired Long Generic Aborted 6/1/2014 3:12:18 AM i.e. the short test passed, the long test failed. Unfortunately, the drive is out of warranty, so I can't just RMA it. But I hate tossing a drive that can still be used. So, my questions are: If the zero fill succeeded, and the short test passed, can I still use the whole drive? if not, since I'm using LVM on top of RAID, is there a way to tell either of these to just skip the bad area? If not the above, can I just create partitions before and after the part of the drive with the bad LBAs?

• Limit access on login and IP in .htaccess

  There are many examples showing how to use .htaccess to restrict users by login or on their IP address (i.e they are ok from the ones given without authorisation). For some reason the following is never mentioned, yet it seems quite useful. How do I restrict using groups and ip, e.g. group1 can access the page from anywhere group2 can access the page only from certain IP addresses if you are not logged on, you cant see the page, regardless where you are I would like to have all 3 of these working at the same time.

• All program links (icons, menu items) try to use Adobe Reader to run them

  My mother was opening Internet Mail to check her mail on her new Windows 7 PC and a pop-up window asked her if she wanted to use Adobe Reader as the default program instead. She must have clicked yes. Now all of the Start Menu and Desktop icons have the adobe logo and appear to try and use adobe to execute the programs. Has anyone encountered this and were they able to fix it? She tried to associate another program and ended up having the Internet Explorer icon and program replacing the Adobe icons. This woman can tear up a steel ball with a rubber mallet.

• Open Source or Low Cost Layer 7 ("Content") Switch?

  I have several web servers that host a number of different applications and web sites. I want to make it easy to host apps or parts of web sites on different servers (e.g. example.com/foo might be on one physical server and example.com/bar might be on another). We do this Apache redirects right now, but that gets messy fast and in any case we have other problems we want to solve, such as throttling requests from individual clients, and reducing dependency on specific physical hosts. Is there an open source or low cost layer 7 switch that would be suitable for this sort of task? I was hoping to find something like a stripped down Linux VMware guest/appliance built for this purpose, but haven't seen anything suitable out there so far.

  In Rob Conery's Storefront series, Rob makes extensive use of the LazyList<..> construct to pull data from IQueryables. How does this differ from the System.Lazy<...> construct now available in .NET 4.0 (and perhaps earlier)? More depth based on DoctaJones' great answer: Would you recommend one over the other if I wanted to operate on IQueryable as a List<T>? I'm assuming that since Lazy<T> is in the framework now, it is a safer bet for future support and maintainability? If I want to use a strong type instead of an anonymous (var) type would the following statements be functionally equivalent?   I'd like to create a procmail recipe or Perl or shell script that will send an auto response to the original sender as well as anybody that was copied (either To: or cc:) on the original email. Example: [email protected] writes an email to [email protected] and [email protected] (in the To: field). Copies are sent via cc: to [email protected] and [email protected]. He then went on to offer a Tekpub coupon to anyone who could guess where it came from. He linked to a further tweet which had a clue and from that I worked out that it was Entity Framework Code-Only but while trying to determine the usage someone else answered to which Rob replied ...EF CodeOnly - dealing with uncertainty.... So my question boils down to what exactly is he referring to with uncertainty and how does this fit in to Entity Framework Code-Only?

• Automatically number items in a wpf listbox

  I have a person class with two properties, Name an Age. I know how to use databinding to display a collection of person in a wpf list box and how to modify the listitemtemplate to customize how each person is displayed. Now I'd like to number each person on the list according to the order they appear on the list (which could change as the the items were sorted via name or age in the display). The text that I need to capture is in multiline groups like this: truck zDoug Doug's house (123) 456-7890 [email protected] 30 61234.56 8/10/2003 vehicle eRob Rob's house (987) 654-3210 [email protected] For this example I need to capture truck followed by the next seven lines.In other words, in this "block" I have 8 groups.   I've got the following query: select distinct a.id, a.name from Employee a join Dependencies b on a.id = b.eid where not exists ( select * from Dependencies d where b.id = d.id and d.name = 'Apple' ) and exists ( select * from Dependencies c where b.id = c.id and c.name = 'Orange' ); I have two tables, relatively simple. The first Employee has an id column and a name column The second table Dependencies has 3 column, an id, an eid (employee id to link) and names (apple, orange etc). the data looks like this Employee table looks like this id | name ----------- 1 | Pat 2 | Tom 3 | Rob 4 | Sam Dependencies id | eid | Name -------------------- 1 | 1 | Orange 2 | 1 | Apple 3 | 2 | Strawberry 4 | 2 | Apple 5 | 3 | Orange 6 | 3 | Banana As you can see Pat has both Orange and Apple and he needs to be excluded and it has to be via joins and i can't seem to get it to work. Ultimately the data should only return Rob
