  • passenger-status - ERROR: Phusion Passenger doesn't seem to be running

    - by Casual Coder
My server is: Server version: Apache/2.2.11 (Ubuntu) Server built: Aug 16 2010 17:44:11 My ruby version ruby 1.9.2p136 (2010-12-25 revision 30365) [x86_64-linux]. I've installed passenger 3.0.7 via RubyGems. I've run passenger-install-apache2-module and everything went fine. I've modified configuration (load module, edit virtualhost etc.) and restarted Apache. Module is loading fine (apache does not complain). But Passenger is obviously not working: sudo passenger-status ERROR: Phusion Passenger doesn't seem to be running. How can I get it working ? Edit 1: /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/passenger.load LoadModule passenger_module /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-3.0.7/ext/apache2/mod_passenger.so Root of passenger: passenger-config --root /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-3.0.7 Apache VirtualHost sub URI configuration in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/railsapps: <VirtualHost <IP ADDRESS>:80> ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost ServerName my.server.name PassengerRoot /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-3.0.7 PassengerRuby /usr/bin/ruby RailsEnv development DocumentRoot /www/vhosts/railsapps <Directory /www/vhosts/railsapps> Options FollowSymlinks -MultiViews AllowOverride None Order allow, deny Allow from all </Directory> RailsBaseURI /siteA <Directory /www/vhosts/railsapps/siteA> Options -MultiViews AllowOverride All Order allow, deny Allow from all </Directory> RailsBaseURI /siteB <Directory /www/vhosts/railsapps/siteB> AllowOverride All Options -MultiViews Order allow, deny Allow from all </Directory> LogLevel info ErrorLog /var/log/apache2/railsapps_error.log CustomLog /var/log/apache2/railsapps_access.log combined </VirtualHost> Of course as in 'users guide apache.html' siteA and siteB are symlinks to siteA/public and siteB/public absolute paths respectively. Edit 2: In logs there is nothing related to passenger. Permissions are also fine (read and executable) on directories in paths. Even if it was some misconfiguration or permission problem isn't passenger suppose to be running? I mean sudo passenger-status should at least output --- general information ---. When I place some test html file in railsapps directory it is served fine. /var/log/apache2/railsapps_error.log [Sun Jun 19 12:19:08 2011] [error] [client <IP>] Directory index forbidden by Options directive: /www/vhosts/railsapps/siteA/ [Sun Jun 19 12:19:08 2011] [error] [client <IP>] File does not exist: /www/vhosts/railsapps/favicon.ico

  • Ubuntu - Ruby Daemon script creates two processes - sh and ruby - PID file points at sh, not ruby

    - by Jonathan Scoles
The PID file for a ruby process I have running as a daemon is getting the wrong PID. It appears that running /etc/init.d/sinatra start creates two processes - sh and ruby, and the PID that ends up in the PID file is that of the sh process. This means that when I then run /etc/init.d/sinatra stop or /etc/init.d/sinatra restart, it is killing sh and leaving the ruby process still running. I'd like to know a) why is my script launching two processes - sh and ruby, and not just ruby, and b) how do I fix it to just launch ruby? Details of the setup: I have a small Sinatra server set up on an ubuntu server, running as a daemon. It is set to automatically at server startup run a script named sinatra in /etc/init.d that launches the a control script control.rb, which then runs a ruby daemon command to start the server. The script is run under the 'sinatrauser' account, which has permissions for the directories the script needs. contents of /etc/init.d/sinatra #!/bin/bash # sinatra Startup script for Sinatra server. sudo -u sinatrauser ruby /var/www/sinatra/control.rb $1 RETVAL=$? exit $RETVAL To install this script, I simply copied it to /etc/init.d/ and ran sudo update-rc.d sinatra defaults contents of /var/www/sinatra/control.rb require 'rubygems' require 'daemons' pwd = Dir.pwd Daemons.run_proc('sinatraserver.rb', {:dir_mode => :normal, :dir => "/opt/pids/sinatra"}) do Dir.chdir(pwd) exec 'ruby /var/www/sinatra/sintraserver.rb >> /var/log/sinatra/sinatraOutput.log 2>&1' end portion of output from ps -A 6967 ? 00:00:00 apache2 10181 ? 00:00:00 sh <--- PID file gets this PID 10182 ? 00:00:02 ruby <--- Actual ruby process running Sinatra 12172 ? 00:00:00 sshd The PID file gets created in /opt/pids/sinatra/sinatraserver.rb.pid, and always contains the PID of the sh instance, which is always one less than the PID of the ruby process EDIT: I tried micke's solution, but it had no effect on the behavior I am seeing. This is the output from ps -A f. This output looks the same whether I use sudo -u sinatrauser ... or su sinatrauser -c ... in the service start script in /etc/init.d. 1146 ? S 0:00 sh -c ruby /var/www/sinatra/sinatraserver.rb >> /var/log/sinatra/sinatraOutput.log 2>&1 1147 ? S 0:00 \_ ruby /var/www/sinatra/sinatraserver.rb

  • How to move a ruby on rails application to a new server

    - by ManiacZX
I have a rails app on an old Ubuntu server I need to move onto a new machine. I haven't worked with ruby on rails so I don't really know anything about the structure of the app. I want to load this onto an Ubuntu 8.04 AMI on Amazon EC2 and am looking for any information regarding the migration process such as: Do I copy over the entire folder defined as the application root in the mongrel config (for ex: /u/apps/myapp/current) or just certain folders? Am I looking for trouble if I go with the latest versions of ruby and the various gems? Any general gotchas to look out for in the process. • AppHarbor - Azure Done Right AKA Heroku for .NET

    - by Robz / Fervent Coder
Easy and Instant deployments and instant scale for .NET? Awhile back a few of us were looking at Ruby Gems as the answer to package management for .NET. The gems platform supported the concept of DLLs as packages although some changes would have needed to happen to have long term use for the entire community. From that we formed a partnership with some folks at Microsoft to make v2 into something that would meet wider adoption across the community, which people now call NuGet. So now we have the concept of package management. What comes next? Heroku Instant deployments and instant scaling. Stupid simple API. This is Heroku. It doesn’t sound like much, but when you think of how fast you can go from an idea to having someone else tinker with it, you can start to see its power. In literally seconds you can be looking at your rails application deployed and online. Then when you are ready to scale, you can do that. This is power. Some may call this “cloud-computing” or PaaS (Platform as a Service). I first ran into Heroku back in July when I met Nick of RubyGems.org. At the time there was no alternative in the .NET-o-sphere. I don’t count Windows Azure, mostly because it is not simple and I don’t believe there is a free version. Heroku itself would not lend itself well to .NET due to the nature of platforms and each language’s specific needs (solution stack).  So I tucked the idea in the back of my head and moved on. AppHarbor Enters The Scene I’m not sure when I first heard about AppHarbor as a possible .NET version of Heroku. It may have been in November, but I didn’t actually try it until January. I was instantly hooked. AppHarbor is awesome! It still has a ways to go to be considered Heroku for .NET, but it already has a growing community. I created a video series (at the bottom of this post) that really highlights how fast you can get a product onto the web and really shows the power and simplicity of AppHarbor. Deploying is as simple as a git/hg push to appharbor. From there they build your code, run any unit tests you have and deploy it if everything succeeds. The screen on the right shows a simple and elegant UI to getting things done. The folks at AppHarbor graciously gave me a limited number of invites to hand out. If you are itching to try AppHarbor then navigate to: https://appharbor.com/account/new?inviteCode=ferventcoder  After playing with it, send feedback if you want more features. Go vote up two features I want that will make it more like Heroku. Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with AppHarbor and have not received any funds or favors from anyone at AppHarbor. I just think it is awesome and I want others to know about it. From Zero To Deployed in 15 Minutes (Or Less) Now I have a challenge for you. I created a video series showing how fast I could go from nothing to a deployed application. It could have been from Zero to Deployed in Less than 5 minutes, but I wanted to show you the tools a little more and give you an opportunity to beat my time. And that’s the challenge. Beat my time and show it in a video response. The video series is below (at least one of the videos has to be watched on YouTube). The person with the best time by March 15th @ 11:59PM CST will receive a prize. Ground rules: .NET Application with a valid database connection Start from Zero Deployed with AppHarbor or an alternative A timer displayed in the video that runs during the entire process Video response published on YouTube or acceptable alternative Video(s) must be published by March 15th at 11:59PM CST. Either post the link here as a comment or on YouTube as a response (also by 11:59PM CST March 15th) From Zero To Deployed In 15 Minutes (Or Less) Part 1 From Zero To Deployed In 15 Minutes (Or Less) Part 2 From Zero To Deployed In 15 Minutes (Or Less) Part 3

UPDATE 3/20/10 I'm running Mac OSX Snow Leopard, this problem is caused by a recent train wreck in which I updated ruby without RVM. • Why is "wsdl" namespace interjected into action name when using savon for ruby soap communication?

    - by Nick Gorbikoff
I'm trying to access a SOAP service i don't control. One of the actions is called ProcessMessage. I follow example and generate a SOAP request, but I get an error back saying that the action doesn't exist. I traced the problem to the way the body of the envelope is generated. <env:Envelope ... "> <env:Header> <wsse:Security ... "> <wsse:UsernameToken ..."> <wsse:Username>USER</wsse:Username> <wsse:Nonce>658e702d5feff1777a6c741847239eb5d6d86e48</wsse:Nonce> <wsu:Created>2010-02-18T02:05:25Z</wsu:Created> <wsse:Password ... >password</wsse:Password> </wsse:UsernameToken> </wsse:Security> </env:Header> <env:Body> <wsdl:ProcessMessage> <payload> ...... </payload> </wsdl:ProcessMessage> </env:Body> </env:Envelope> That ProcessMessage tag should be : <ProcessMessage xmlns="http://www.starstandards.org/webservices/2005/10/transport"> That's what it is when it is generated by the sample java app, and it works. That tag is the only difference between what my ruby app generates and the sample java app. Is there any way to get rid of the "wsdl:" namesaplce in front of that one tag and add an attribute like that. Barring that, is there a way to make force the action to be not to be generated by just passed as a string like the rest of the body? Here is my code. require 'rubygems' require 'savon' client = Savon::Client.new "https://gmservices.pp.gm.com/ProcessMessage?wsdl" response = client.process_message! do | soap, wsse | wsse.username = "USER" wsse.password = "password" soap.namespace = "http://www.starstandards.org/webservices/2005/10/transport" #makes no difference soap.action = "ProcessMessage" #makes no difference soap.input = "ProcessMessage" #makes no difference #my body at this point is jsut one big xml string soap.body = "<payload>...</payload>" # putting <ProccessMessage> tag here doesn't help as it just creates a duplicate tag in the body, since Savon keeps interjecting <wsdl:ProcessMessage> tag. end Thank you P.S.: I tried handsoap but it doesn't support httpS and is confusing, and I tried soap4r but but it'even more confusing than handsoap.

  • json problems with making a ruby on rails application

    - by Prince Merdz
So I'm using Bitnami to learn Ruby on Rails. I have also previously tried the manual installation for ruby and rails and was met by the same problem so I thought I should try first the easy package deal of Bitnami. Anyway my problem with json is that it causes the bundle install to fail. First the auto bundle install that rails new does fails because of an ssl error. Which is easily solved by changing the source in the gemfile which is https to http. However when I try to bundle install it does another error when it tries to install json. • gem install of mongrel

I initiated myself into rails development yesterday. I installed ruby 1.9.1 , rubygems and rails. Running 'gem install mongrel' worked fine and ostensibly installed mongrel too. I am slightly puzzled because script/server starts webrick by default 'which mongrel' returns nothing 'locate mongrel' returns lots of entries like . /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.5.sdk/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/mongrel-1.0.1 /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.5.sdk/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/mongrel-1.0.1/lib /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.5.sdk/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/mongrel-1.0.1/lib/mongrel . . . /usr/local/bin/mongrel_rails /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/cache/mongrel-1.1.5.gem /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/doc/actionpack-2.3.2/rdoc/files/lib/action_controller/vendor/rack-1_0/rack/handler/evented_mongrel_rb.html /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/doc/actionpack-2.3.2/rdoc/files/lib/action_controller/vendor/rack-1_0/rack/handler/mongrel_rb.html /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/doc/actionpack-2.3.2/rdoc/files/lib/action_controller/vendor/rack-1_0/rack/handler/swiftiplied_mongrel_rb.html /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/actionpack-2.3.2/lib/action_controller/vendor/rack-1.0/rack/handler/evented_mongrel.rb /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/actionpack-2.3.2/lib/action_controller/vendor/rack-1.0/rack/handler/mongrel.rb /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/actionpack-2.3.2/lib/action_controller/vendor/rack-1.0/rack/handler/swiftiplied_mongrel.rb /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/mongrel-1.1.5 . . . • shopify_app syntax error

    - by Pete171
Edit: Debugging has got me further. Question clarified. We have installed Ruby, RubyGems and Rails and have forked the shopify_app project. We have created a new rails applications and added three items to the Gemfile: execjs, therubyracer and shopify_app. Running rails s in order to start our rails application returns this trace: root@ubuntu:/usr/local/pete-shopify/cart# rails s Faraday: you may want to install system_timer for reliable timeouts /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/shopify_app-4.1.0/lib/shopify_app.rb:15:in `require': /var/lib /gems/1.8/gems/shopify_app-4.1.0/lib/shopify_app/login_protection.rb:5: syntax error, unexpected ':', expecting kEND (SyntaxError) ...rce::UnauthorizedAccess, with: :close_session ^ from /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/shopify_app-4.1.0/lib/shopify_app.rb:15 from /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/bundler-1.2.1/lib/bundler/runtime.rb:68:in `require' from /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/bundler-1.2.1/lib/bundler/runtime.rb:68:in `require' from /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/bundler-1.2.1/lib/bundler/runtime.rb:66:in `each' from /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/bundler-1.2.1/lib/bundler/runtime.rb:66:in `require' from /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/bundler-1.2.1/lib/bundler/runtime.rb:55:in `each' from /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/bundler-1.2.1/lib/bundler/runtime.rb:55:in `require' from /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/bundler-1.2.1/lib/bundler.rb:128:in `require' from /usr/local/pete-shopify/cart/config/application.rb:7 from /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/railties-3.2.8/lib/rails/commands.rb:53:in `require' from /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/railties-3.2.8/lib/rails/commands.rb:53 from /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/railties-3.2.8/lib/rails/commands.rb:50:in `tap' from /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/railties-3.2.8/lib/rails/commands.rb:50 from script/rails:6:in `require' from script/rails:6 I haven't modified any files since forking from Github. Lines 1 - 6 of login_protection.rb are as follows: module ShopifyApp::LoginProtection extend ActiveSupport::Concern included do rescue from ActiveResource::UnauthorizedAccess, with: :close_session end I've looked into this and it seems that the error is caused by a new-style hash syntax between Ruby 1.8 and 1.9; key : value instead of key => value. Running ruby -v from the command line returns ruby 1.9.3p0 (2011-10-30 revision 33570) [x86_64-linux]. This would seem to be OK... but I did some debugging, and inside the file /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/shopify_app-4.1.0/lib/shopify_app.rb (at the top) by putting this: puts RUBY_VERSION exit It printed 1.8.7. **Why are ruby -v and RUBY_VERSION giving me different results? And am I correct in assuming this is the cause of my problems? Note: To upgrade Ruby I installed the later version with apt-get and then switched to it by using update-alternatives --config ruby and selecting option 2 like this: root@ubuntu:/usr/local/pete-shopify/cart# update-alternatives --config ruby There are 2 choices for the alternative ruby (providing /usr/bin/ruby). Selection Path Priority Status ------------------------------------------------------------ 0 /usr/bin/ruby1.8 50 auto mode 1 /usr/bin/ruby1.8 50 manual mode * 2 /usr/bin/ruby1.9.1 10 manual mode Also note: We're PHP/Python developers so this is all new to us! Summary: 1 - Am I right in determining the cause of the syntax error? 2 - Why does RUBY_VERSION and ruby -v give me different results?

  • Do Websites need Local Databases Anymore?

    - by viatropos
If there's a better place to ask this, please let me know. Every time I build a new website/blog/shopping-cart/etc., I keep trying to do the following: Extract out common functionality into reusable code (Rubygems and jQuery plugins mostly) If possible, convert that gem into a small service so I never have to deal with a database for the objects involved (by service, I mean something lean and mean, usually built with the Sinatra Web Framework with a few core models). My assumption is, if I can remove dependencies on local databases, that will make it easier and more scalable in the long run (scalable in terms of reusability and manageability, not necessarily database/performance). I'm not sure if that's a good or bad assumption yet. What do you think? I've made this assumption because of the following reason: Most serious database/model functionality has been built on the internet somewhere. Just to name a few: Social Network API: Facebook Messaging API: Twitter Mailing API: Google Event API: Eventbrite Shopping API: Shopify Comment API: Disqus Form API: Wufoo Image API: Picasa Video API: Youtube ... Each of those things are fairly complicated to build from scratch and to make as optimized, simple, and easy to use as those companies have made them. So if I build an app that shows pictures (picasa) on an Event page (eventbrite), and you can see who joined the event (facebook events), and send them emails (google apps api), and have them fill out monthly surveys (wufoo), and watch a video when they're done (youtube), all integrated into a custom, easy to use website, and I can do that without ever creating a local database, is that a good thing? I ask because there's two things missing from the puzzle that keep forcing me to create that local database: Post API RESTful/Pretty Url API While there's plenty of Blogging systems and APIs for them, there is no one place where you can just write content and have it part of some massive thing. For every app, I have to use code for creating pretty/restful urls, and that saves posts. But it seems like that should be a service! Question is, is that what the website is? ...That place to integrate the worlds services for my specific cause... and, sigh, to store posts that only my site has access to. Will everyone always need "their own blog"? Why not just have a profile and write lots of content on an established platform like StackOverflow or Facebook? ... That way I can write apps entirely without a database and know that I'm doing it right. Note: Of course at some point you'd need a database, if you were doing something unique or new. But for the case where you're just rewiring information or creating things like videos, events, and products, is it really necessary anymore??

  • Thin & Sinatra not taking port

    - by NekoNova
I'm having problems settig up my application using Thin and Sinatra. I have created a development-config.ru file that contains the following settings: # This is a rack configuration file to fire up the Sinatra application. # This allows better control and configuration as we are using the modular # approach here for controlling our application. # # Extend the Ruby load path with the root of the API and the lib folder # so that we can automatically include all our own custom classes. This makes # the requiring of files a bit cleaner and easier to maintain. # This is basically what rails does as well. # We also store the root of the API in the ENV settings to ensure we have # always access to the root of the API when building paths. ENV['API_ROOT'] = File.dirname(__FILE__) $:.unshift ENV['API_ROOT'] $:.unshift File.expand_path(File.join(ENV['API_ROOT'], 'lib')) $:.unshift File.expand_path(File.join(ENV['API_ROOT'], 'db')) # Now we can require all the gems used for the entire API by simpling requiring # them here. We can also include the classes that we have defined inside the lib # folder. require 'rubygems' require 'bundler' # Run Bundler to setup our gems properly. This will install all the missing gems on # the system and ensure that the deployment environment is ready to run. Bundler.require # To make the loading easier for the application, we will now automatically load all # models that have been defined inside the lib folder. This ensures that we do not need # to load them anymore anywhere else in our application, as the models will be known to # ruby everywhere. Dir.glob(File.join(ENV['API_ROOT'], 'lib', '**', '*.rb')).each{|file| require file} # Now we will configure the Sinatra application so that we can fire up the entire API. # This requires some detailed settings like whether logging is allowed, the port to be # used and some folder locations. require 'sinatra' require 'app' set :logging, true set :dump_errors, true set :port, 3001 set :views, "#{ENV['API_ROOT']}/views" set :public_folder, "#{ENV['API_ROOT']}/public" set :environment, :test # Start up the Sinatra application with all the settings that we have defined. run App.new This is based upon the information I found on the Sinatra website. However, the problem is that I cannot get the application running on port 3001. If I use thin start -R development-config.ru it runs on port 3000. If I use rackup config-development.ru it runs on port 9696. However I never see Sinatra kick in or run over port 3000. My application looks like this: # Author : Arne De Herdt # Email : # This is the actuall application that will be running under Sinatra # to serve the requests for the billing middleware API. # We use the modular approach here to allow control when deploying # the application using Capistrano. require 'sinatra/base' require 'logger' require 'savon' require 'billcrux' class App < Sinatra::Base # This action responds to POST requests on the URI '/billcrux/register' # and is responsible for handeling registration requests with the # BillCrux payment system. # The post "/billcrux/register" do # do stuff end end Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

  • Rails & Twilio: Receiving nil when storing texts received from Twilio

    - by Jon Smooth
I have set up the request URL in my Twilio account to have it POST to: myurl.com/receivetext. It appears to be successfully posting because when I check the database using the Heroku console I see the following: Post id: 5, body: nil, from: nil, created_at: "2012-06-14 17:28:01", updated_at: "2012-06-14 17:28:01" Why is it receiving nil for the body and from attributes? I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong! The created and updated at are storing successfully but the two attributes that I care about continue to be stored as nil. Here's the Receive Text controller which is receiving the Post request from Twilio: class ReceiveTextController < ApplicationController def index @post=Post.create!(body: params[:Body], from: params[:From]) end end EDIT: When I dump the params I receive the following: "{\"controller\"=\"receive_text\", \"action\"=\"index\"}" I attained this by inserting the following into my ReceiveText controller. @params = Post.create!(body: params.inspect, from: "Dumping Params") and then opening up the Heroku console to find the database entry with from = "Dumping Params". I simulated a Twilio request with a curl with the following command curl -X POST myurl.com/receivetext route -d 'AccountSid=AC123&From=%2B19252411234' I checked the production database again and noticed that the curl request did work when obtaining the FROM atribute. It stored the following: params.inspect returned "{\"AccountSid\"=\"AC123\", \"From\"=\"+19252411234\", \"co..." I received a comment stating: "As long as twilio is hitting the same URL with the same method (GET/POST) it should be filling the params array as well" I have no idea how to make this comment actionable. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm very new to rails. Here's my database migration (I have both attributes set to string. I have tried setting it to text and that didn't work either) : class CreatePosts < ActiveRecord::Migration def change create_table :posts do |t| t.string :body t.string :from t.timestamps end end end Here is my Post model: class Post < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :body, :from end Routes (everything appears to be routing just fine) : MovieApp::Application.routes.draw do get "receive_text/index" get "pages/home" get "send_text/send_text_message" root to: 'pages#home' match '/receivetext', to: 'receive_text#index' match '/pages/home', to: 'pages#home' match '/sendtext', to: 'send_text#send_text_message' end Here's my gemfile (incase it helps) source 'https://rubygems.org' gem 'rails', '3.2.3' gem 'badfruit' gem 'twilio-ruby' gem 'logger' gem 'jquery-rails' group :production do gem 'pg' end group :development, :test do gem 'sqlite3' end group :assets do gem 'sass-rails', '~> 3.2.3' gem 'coffee-rails', '~> 3.2.1' gem 'uglifier', '>= 1.0.3' end

  • Can't get MySQL to install

    - by James Marthenal
I'd like to think I know what I'm doing in a Unix shell but maybe not. I made a mistake in a configuration file for MySQL, so I decided to just uninstall it and then reinstall it, so I did: sudo apt-get --purge remove mysql-server mysql-server-5.0 mysql-client The files were deleted, so I then tried to install it, but it didn't ask me for a root password or anything else, so I uninstalled it using the above command again and then did sudo rm -rf /etc/mysql sudo rm /etc/init.d/mysql sudo rm -rf /var/lib/mysql* I then restarted the computer then installed it again: sudo apt-get install mysql-server mysql-client It asked for a root password, and everything looked like it would work, until I saw this: $ sudo apt-get install mysql-server mysql-client Reading package lists... • Using Upstart to manage Unicorn w/ rbenv + bundler binstubs w/ ruby-local-exec shebang

    - by codykrieger
Alright, this is melting my brain. It might have something to do with the fact that I don't understand Upstart as well as I should. Sorry in advance for the long question. I'm trying to use Upstart to manage a Rails app's Unicorn master process. Here is my current /etc/init/app.conf: description "app" start on runlevel [2] stop on runlevel [016] console owner # expect daemon script APP_ROOT=/home/deploy/app PATH=/home/deploy/.rbenv/shims:/home/deploy/.rbenv/bin:$PATH $APP_ROOT/bin/unicorn -c $APP_ROOT/config/unicorn.rb -E production # >> /tmp/upstart.log 2>&1 end script # respawn That works just fine - the Unicorns start up great. What's not great is that the PID detected is not of the Unicorn master, it's of an sh process. That in and of itself isn't so bad, either - if I wasn't using the automagical Unicorn zero-downtime deployment strategy. Because shortly after I send -USR2 to my Unicorn master, a new master spawns up, and the old one dies...and so does the sh process. So Upstart thinks my job has died, and I can no longer restart it with restart or stop it with stop if I want. I've played around with the config file, trying to add -D to the Unicorn line (like this: $APP_ROOT/bin/unicorn -c $APP_ROOT/config/unicorn.rb -E production -D) to daemonize Unicorn, and I added the expect daemon line, but that didn't work either. I've tried expect fork as well. Various combinations of all of those things can cause start and stop to hang, and then Upstart gets really confused about the state of the job. Then I have to restart the machine to fix it. I think Upstart is having problems detecting when/if Unicorn is forking because I'm using rbenv + the ruby-local-exec shebang in my $APP_ROOT/bin/unicorn script. Here it is: #!/usr/bin/env ruby-local-exec # # This file was generated by Bundler. # # The application 'unicorn' is installed as part of a gem, and # this file is here to facilitate running it. # require 'pathname' ENV['BUNDLE_GEMFILE'] ||= File.expand_path("../../Gemfile", Pathname.new(__FILE__).realpath) require 'rubygems' require 'bundler/setup' load Gem.bin_path('unicorn', 'unicorn') Additionally, the ruby-local-exec script looks like this: #!/usr/bin/env bash # # `ruby-local-exec` is a drop-in replacement for the standard Ruby # shebang line: # # #!/usr/bin/env ruby-local-exec # # Use it for scripts inside a project with an `.rbenv-version` # file. When you run the scripts, they'll use the project-specified # Ruby version, regardless of what directory they're run from. Useful # for e.g. running project tasks in cron scripts without needing to # `cd` into the project first. set -e export RBENV_DIR="${1%/*}" exec ruby "$@" So there's an exec in there that I'm worried about. It fires up a Ruby process, which fires up Unicorn, which may or may not daemonize itself, which all happens from an sh process in the first place...which makes me seriously doubt the ability of Upstart to track all of this nonsense. Is what I'm trying to do even possible? From what I understand, the expect stanza in Upstart can only be told (via daemon or fork) to expect a maximum of two forks.

  • UppercuT &ndash; Custom Extensions Now With PowerShell and Ruby

    - by Robz / Fervent Coder
Arguably, one of the most powerful features of UppercuT (UC) is the ability to extend any step of the build process with a pre, post, or replace hook. This customization is done in a separate location from the build so you can upgrade without wondering if you broke the build. There is a hook before each step of the build has run. There is a hook after. And back to power again, there is a replacement hook. If you don’t like what the step is doing and/or you want to replace it’s entire functionality, you just drop a custom replacement extension and UppercuT will perform the custom step instead. Up until recently all custom hooks had to be written in NAnt. Now they are a little sweeter because you no longer need to use NAnt to extend UC if you don’t want to. You can use PowerShell. Or Ruby.   Let that sink in for a moment. You don’t have to even need to interact with NAnt at all now. Extension Points On the wiki, all of the extension points are shown. The basic idea is that you would put whatever customization you are doing in a separate folder named build.custom. Each step Let’s take a look at all we can customize: The start point is default.build. It calls build.custom/default.pre.build if it exists, then it runs build/default.build (normal tasks) OR build.custom/default.replace.build if it exists, and finally build.custom/default.post.build if it exists. Every step below runs with the same extension points but changes on the file name it is looking for. To customize any extension point with PS, just add .ps1 to the end of the file name and write your custom tasks in PowerShell. If you are not signing your scripts you will need to change a setting in the UppercuT.config file. This does impose a security risk, because this allows PS to now run any PS script. This setting stays that way on ANY machine that runs the build until manually changed by someone. I’m not responsible if you mess up your machine or anyone else’s by doing this. You’ve been warned. Now that you are fully aware of any security holes you may open and are okay with that, let’s move on. Let’s create a file called default.replace.build.ps1 in the build.custom folder. Open that file in notepad and let’s add this to it: write-host "hello - I'm a custom task written in Powershell!" Now, let’s run build.bat. You could get some PSake action going here. I won’t dive into that in this post though. Customize UppercuT Builds With Ruby If you want to customize any extension point with Ruby, just add .rb to the end of the file name and write your custom tasks in Ruby.  Let’s write a custom ruby task for UC. If you were thinking it would be the same as the one we just wrote for PS, you’d be right! In the build.custom folder, lets create a file called default.replace.build.rb. Open that file in notepad and let’s put this in there: puts "I'm a custom ruby task!" Now, let’s run build.bat again. That’s chunky bacon. UppercuT and Albacore.NET Just for fun, I wanted to see if I could replace the compile.step with a Rake task. Not just any rake task, Albacore’s msbuild task. Albacore is a suite of rake tasks brought about by Derick Bailey to make building .NET with Rake easier. It has quite a bit of support with developers that are using Rake to build code. In my build.custom folder, I drop a compile.replace.step.rb. I also put in a separate file that will contain my Albacore rake task and I call that compile.rb. What are the contents of compile.replace.step.rb? rake = 'rake' arguments= '-f ' + Dir.pwd + '/../build.custom/compile.rb' #puts "Calling #{rake} " + arguments system("#{rake} " + arguments) Since the custom extensions call ruby, we have to shell back out and call rake. That’s what we are doing here. We also realize that ruby is called from the build folder, so we need to back out and dive into the build.custom folder to find the file that is technically next to us. What are the contents of compile.rb? require 'rubygems' require 'fileutils' require 'albacore' task :default => [:compile] puts "Using Ruby to compile UppercuT with Albacore Tasks" desc 'Compile the source' msbuild :compile do |msb| msb.properties = { :configuration => :Release, :outputpath => '../../build_output/UppercuT' } msb.targets [:clean, :build] msb.verbosity = "quiet" msb.path_to_command = 'c:/Windows/Microsoft.NET/Framework/v3.5/MSBuild.exe' msb.solution = '../uppercut.sln' end We are using the msbuild task here. We change the output path to the build_output/UppercuT folder. The output path has “../../” because this is based on every project. We could grab the current directory and then point the task specifically to a folder if we have projects that are at different levels. We want the verbosity to be quiet so we set that as well. So what kind of output do you get for this? Let’s run build.bat custom_tasks_replace:      [echo] Running custom tasks instead of normal tasks if C:\code\uppercut\build\..\build.custom\compile.replace.step exists.      [exec] (in C:/code/uppercut/build)      [exec] Using Ruby to compile UppercuT with Albacore Tasks      [exec] Microsoft (R) Build Engine Version 3.5.30729.4926      [exec] [Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0.50727.4927]      [exec] Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation 2007. All rights reserved. If you think this is awesome, you’d be right!   With this knowledge you shall build.

I'm running bundle install and this is in my Gemfile: gem 'mysql2', '~> 0.3.11' I've currently got MySQL running through MAMP. I'm not sure if this is a bad idea and I should run a vanilla MySQl but it seems my current problem is just getting the gem installed. I've seen quite a few of these problems here on stackoverflow but all seem a bit different or have really complicated solutions. Is there something I'm missing? Something simple? Something stupid? I can provide additional info from the out file if necessary. I've read that some people use SQLite for dev and test then MySQL in prod but that sounds like a pretty horrible idea.

  • Ruby on Rail using MYSQL database

Hey guys, New to rails, trying to figure out something simple. Seems as though I cannot migrate a very simple mysql database using "rake db:migrate" command. Here is the issue: I know rails defaults to sqllite right now, but I need to use mysql for a series of reasons. • REST API Help in Rails

    - by dannymcc
    Hi Everyone, I am trying to get some information posted using our accountancy package (FreeAgentCentral) using their API via a GEM. http://github.com/aaronrussell/freeagent_api/ I have the following code to get it working (supposedly): Kase Controller def create @kase = Kase.new(params[:kase]) @company = Company.find(params[:kase][:company_id]) @kase = @company.kases.create!(params[:kase]) respond_to do |format| if @kase.save UserMailer.deliver_makeakase("[email protected]", "Highrise", @kase) @kase.create_freeagent_project(current_user) #flash[:notice] = 'Case was successfully created.' flash[:notice] = fading_flash_message("Case was successfully created & sent to Highrise.", 5) format.html { redirect_to(@kase) } format.xml { render :xml => @kase, :status => :created, :location => @kase } else format.html { render :action => "new" } format.xml { render :xml => @kase.errors, :status => :unprocessable_entity } end end end To save you looking through, the important part is: @kase.create_freeagent_project(current_user) Kase Model # FreeAgent API Project Create # Required attribues # :contact_id # :name # :payment_term_in_days # :billing_basis # must be 1, 7, 7.5, or 8 # :budget_units # must be Hours, Days, or Monetary # :status # must be Active or Completed def create_freeagent_project(current_user) p = Freeagent::Project.create( :contact_id => 0, :name => "#{jobno} - #{highrisesubject}", :payment_terms_in_days => 5, :billing_basis => 1, :budget_units => 'Hours', :status => 'Active' ) user = Freeagent::User.find_by_email(current_user.email) Freeagent::Timeslip.create( :project_id => p.id, :user_id => user.id, :hours => 1, :new_task => 'Setup', :dated_on => Time.now ) end lib/freeagent_api.rb require 'rubygems' gem 'activeresource', '< 3.0.0.beta1' require 'active_resource' module Freeagent class << self def authenticate(options) Base.authenticate(options) end end class Error < StandardError; end class Base < ActiveResource::Base def self.authenticate(options) self.site = "https://#{options[:domain]}" self.user = options[:username] self.password = options[:password] end end # Company class Company def self.invoice_timeline InvoiceTimeline.find :all, :from => '/company/invoice_timeline.xml' end def self.tax_timeline TaxTimeline.find :all, :from => '/company/tax_timeline.xml' end end class InvoiceTimeline < Base self.prefix = '/company/' end class TaxTimeline < Base self.prefix = '/company/' end # Contacts class Contact < Base end # Projects class Project < Base def invoices Invoice.find :all, :from => "/projects/#{id}/invoices.xml" end def timeslips Timeslip.find :all, :from => "/projects/#{id}/timeslips.xml" end end # Tasks - Complete class Task < Base self.prefix = '/projects/:project_id/' end # Invoices - Complete class Invoice < Base def mark_as_draft connection.put("/invoices/#{id}/mark_as_draft.xml", encode, self.class.headers).tap do |response| load_attributes_from_response(response) end end def mark_as_sent connection.put("/invoices/#{id}/mark_as_sent.xml", encode, self.class.headers).tap do |response| load_attributes_from_response(response) end end def mark_as_cancelled connection.put("/invoices/#{id}/mark_as_cancelled.xml", encode, self.class.headers).tap do |response| load_attributes_from_response(response) end end end # Invoice items - Complete class InvoiceItem < Base self.prefix = '/invoices/:invoice_id/' end # Timeslips class Timeslip < Base def self.find(*arguments) scope = arguments.slice!(0) options = arguments.slice!(0) || {} if options[:params] && options[:params][:from] && options[:params][:to] options[:params][:view] = options[:params][:from]+'_'+options[:params][:to] options[:params].delete(:from) options[:params].delete(:to) end case scope when :all then find_every(options) when :first then find_every(options).first when :last then find_every(options).last when :one then find_one(options) else find_single(scope, options) end end end # Users class User < Base self.prefix = '/company/' def self.find_by_email(email) users = User.find :all users.each do |u| u.email == email ? I am new to ruby on rails, so don't know much about it. Thanks for your help.
