  • Methodology behind fetching large XML data sets in pieces

    - by Jerry Dodge
I am working on an HTTP Server in Delphi which simply sends back a custom XML dataset. I am not following any type of standard formatting, such as SOAP. I have the system working seamlessly, except one small flaw: When I have a very large dataset to send back to the client, it might take up to 2 minutes for all the data to be transferred. The HTTP Server I'm building is essentially an XML Data based API around a database, implementing the common business rule - therefore, the requests are specific to the data behind the system. When, for example, I fetch a large set of product data, I would like to break this down and send it back piece by piece. However, a single HTTP request calls for a single response. I can't necessarily keep feeding the client with multiple different XML packets unless the client explicitly requests it. I don't have any session management, but rather an API Key. I know if I had sessions, I could keep-alive a dataset temporarily for a client, and they could request bits and pieces of it. However, without session management, I would have to execute the SQL query multiple times (for each chunk of data), and in the mean-time, if that data changes, the "pages" might get messed up, therefore causing items to show on the wrong pages, after navigating to a different page. So how is this commonly handled? What's the methodology behind breaking down a large XML dataset into chunks to save the load?

  • SQL SERVER – Rename Columnname or Tablename – SQL in Sixty Seconds #032 – Video

    - by pinaldave
We all make mistakes at some point of time and we all change our opinion. There are quite a lot of people in the world who have changed their name after they have grown up. Some corrected their parent’s mistake and some create new mistake. Well, databases are not protected from such incidents. There are many reasons why developers may want to change the name of the column or table after it was initially created. The goal of this video is not to dwell on the reasons but to learn how we can rename the column and table. Earlier I have written the article on this subject over here: SQL SERVER – How to Rename a Column Name or Table Name. I have revised the same article over here and created this video. There is one very important point to remember that by changing the column name or table name one creates the possibility of errors in the application the columns and tables are used. When any column or table name is changed, the developer should go through every place in the code base, ad-hoc queries, stored procedures, views and any other place where there are possibility of their usage and change them to the new name. If this is one followed up religiously there are quite a lot of changes that application will stop working due to this name change.  One has to remember that changing column name does not change the name of the indexes, constraints etc and they will continue to reference the old name. Though this will not stop the show but will create visual un-comfort as well confusion in many cases. Here is my question back to you – have you changed ever column name or table name in production database (after project going live)? If yes, what was the scenario and need of doing it. After all it is just a name. Let me know what you think of this video. Here is the updated script. USE tempdb GO CREATE TABLE TestTable (ID INT, OldName VARCHAR(20)) GO INSERT INTO TestTable VALUES (1, 'First') GO -- Check the Tabledata SELECT * FROM TestTable GO -- Rename the ColumnName sp_RENAME 'TestTable.OldName', 'NewName', 'Column' GO -- Check the Tabledata SELECT * FROM TestTable GO -- Rename the TableName sp_RENAME 'TestTable', 'NewTable' GO -- Check the Tabledata - Error SELECT * FROM TestTable GO -- Check the Tabledata - New SELECT * FROM NewTable GO -- Cleanup DROP TABLE NewTable GO Related Tips in SQL in Sixty Seconds: SQL SERVER – How to Rename a Column Name or Table Name What would you like to see in the next SQL in Sixty Seconds video? • How to structure a XML-based order form using ASP.NET

    - by Brendan
First question here; please help me if I'm doing something wrong. I'm a graphic designer who's trying to teach himself ASP.NET/C#. My server-side background is PHP/WordPress and some ASP Classic, and when I do code I've hand-coded just about everything since I started learning HTML. So, as I've started to learn .NET, my code has been very manual and procedural. I'm now trying to create a really basic order form that pulls from an XML file to populate the form; there's an image, a title, a price, and selectable quantities. If I was making this form as a static HTML file, I'd have each field named manually and so on postback I could query each field to get the values. But I'm trying to do this dynamically so that I can add/remove items from the form and not have to change the code. In terms of displaying the XML, I rolled my own by loading XmlDocument and using XmlNodeList and a bunch of foreach loops to get things displayed. Then, I learned about <asp:XmlDataSource> and <asp:Repeater>, which made displaying the XML simpler by a large margin. However, I've had a really hard time getting the data that's been submitted on postback (it was implied on SO that there are better ways to get data than nested RepeaterItems). So, what I've learned so far is that you can do things a bunch of different ways in .NET. that's why I thought it'd be good to ask for answers regarding the best way to use ASP.NET to display a XML document and dynamically capture the data that's submitted. Any help is appreciated! I'm using Notepad++ to code .NET 2.0.

  • Can't remotely connect through SQL Server Management Studio

    - by FAtBalloon
I have setup a SQL Server 2008 Express instance on a dedicated Windows 2008 Server hosted by 1and1.com. I cannot connect remotely to the server through management studio. I have taken the following steps below and am beyond any further ideas. I have researched the site and cannot figure anything else out so please forgive me if I missed something obvious, but I'm going crazy. Here's the lowdown. The SQL Server instance is running and works perfectly when working locally. In SQL Server Management Studio, I have checked the box "Allow Remote Connections to this Server" I have removed any external hardware firewall settings from the 1and1 admin panel Windows firewall on the server has been disabled, but just for kicks I added an inbound rule that allows for all connections on port 1433. In SQL Native Client configuration, TCP/IP is enabled. I also made sure the "IP1" with the server's IP address had a 0 for dynamic port, but I deleted it and added 1433 in the regular TCP Port field. I also set the "IPALL" TCP Port to 1433. In SQL Native Client configuration, SQL Server Browser is also running and I also tried adding an ALIAS in the I restarted SQL server after I set this value. Doing a "netstat -ano" on the server machine returns a TCP 0.0.0.0:1433 LISTENING UDP 0.0.0.0:1434 LISTENING I do a port scan from my local computer and it says that the port is FILTERED instead of LISTENING. I also tried to connect from Management studio on my local machine and it is throwing a connection error. Tried the following server names with SQL Server and Windows Authentication marked in the database security. ipaddress\SQLEXPRESS,1433 ipaddress\SQLEXPRESS ipaddress ipaddress,1433 tcp:ipaddress\SQLEXPRESS tcp:ipaddress\SQLEXPRESS,1433

  • SQL Server v.Next (Denali) : More on contained databases and "contained users"

    - by AaronBertrand
One of the reasons for contained databases (see my previous post ) is to allow for a more seamless transition when moving a database from one server to another. One of the biggest complications in doing so is making sure that all of the logins are in place on the new server. Contained databases help solve this issue by creating a new type of user: a database-level user with a password. I want to stress that this is not the same concept as a user without a login , which serves a completely different...(read more)

  • SQL SERVER – Introduction to CUME_DIST – Analytic Functions Introduced in SQL Server 2012

    - by pinaldave
This blog post is written in response to the T-SQL Tuesday post of Prox ‘n’ Funx. This is a very interesting subject. By the way Brad Schulz is my favorite guy when it is about blogging. I respect him as well learn a lot from him. Everybody is writing something new his subject, I decided to start SQL Server 2012 analytic functions series. SQL Server 2012 introduces new analytical function CUME_DIST(). This function provides cumulative distribution value. It will be very difficult to explain this in words so I will attempt small example to explain you this function. Instead of creating new table, I will be using AdventureWorks sample database as most of the developer uses that for experiment. Let us fun following query. USE AdventureWorks GO SELECT SalesOrderID, OrderQty, CUME_DIST() OVER(ORDER BY SalesOrderID) AS CDist FROM Sales.SalesOrderDetail WHERE SalesOrderID IN (43670, 43669, 43667, 43663) ORDER BY CDist DESC GO Above query will give us following result. Now let us understand what is the formula behind CUME_DIST and why the values in SalesOrderID = 43670 are 1. Let us take more example and be clear about why the values in SalesOrderID = 43667 are 0.5. Now let us enhence the same example and use PARTITION BY into the OVER clause and see the results. Run following query in SQL Server 2012. USE AdventureWorks GO SELECT SalesOrderID, OrderQty, ProductID, CUME_DIST() OVER(PARTITION BY SalesOrderID ORDER BY ProductID ) AS CDist FROM Sales.SalesOrderDetail s WHERE SalesOrderID IN (43670, 43669, 43667, 43663) ORDER BY s.SalesOrderID DESC, CDist DESC GO Now let us see the result of this query. We are have changed the ORDER BY clause as well partitioning by SalesOrderID. You can see that CUME_DIST() function provides us different results. Additionally now we see value 1 multiple times. As we are using partitioning for each group of SalesOrderID we get the CUME_DIST() value. CUME_DIST() was long awaited Analytical function and I am glad to see it in SQL Server 2012. • SQL Server Windows Auth Login sees Domain as untrusted...

    - by Mr Shoubs
I've had someone set up a domain controller on windows 2008 on one server, and sql server 2008 on another. The domain seems to be working fine, I'm logged on as a domain user on both servers, nothing seems to be a problem there. However, when I try to add a domain user/group to SQL Server Security (e.g. clicking ok from the create login screen) it says it can't find it (even though I've used the search to find the correct account in the first place), when I try to logon (even though I haven't added it yet) it says something about the account being part of an untrusted domain instead of saying I don't have permission to log on. Anyone have any ideas on what is set up incorrectly?

  • An XML file or Database?

    - by webnoob
I am re-writing a section of my site and am trying to decide how much of a rewrite this will be. At the moment I have a web service feed that generates an xml once per day. I then use this xml file on my website to generate the general structure. I am trying to decide if this information should be located in the database or stay in the xml file. The file can range from 4mb - 12mb. The files depth can go on and on so I have to recurse to find the data I want. I use the .NET serializer classes and store the serialized file in a global variable to avoid re-serializing it each time the page is loaded. My reasons for thinking a database would be better are: I would know exactly where I am in the file by using an internal ID so I wouldn't have to recurse the file to get information. I wouldn't have to load / serialize the XML and could just use my already open database connections. Searching for the data in the file would be quicker(?) as I would just perform an SQL query rather than re-cursing the file. Has anyone got any ideas which is better and which option uses more resources on the server or be quicker? EDIT: The file is read every time the web page is loaded (although only serialized once). It isn't written to by standard users (only by an admin task that runs in the middle of the night). This is my initial investigation before mocking up.

Well, much quicker than I would have suspected, the SQL Server Release Services team has incorporated all of the fixes in 2005 SP3's CU #12 into the first CU for SP4. Thanks to Chris Wood for the heads up. You can get the new Cumulative Update here: KB #2464079 : Cumulative update package 1 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 4 The nice round number of build 5000 didn't last long either; this CU will update you from 9.00.5000 to 9.00.5254....(read more)

  • How can I connect to a Windows server using a Command Line Interface? (CLI)

    - by HopelessN00b
Especially with the option to install Server Core in Server 2008 and above, connecting to Windows servers over a CLI is increasingly useful ability, if not one that's very widespread amongst Windows administrators. Practically every Windows GUI management tool has an option to connect to a remote computer, but there is no such option present in the built-in Windows CLI (cmd.exe), which gives the initial impression that this might not be possible. Is it possible to remotely management or administer a Windows Server using a CLI? And if so, what options are there to achieve this?

  • Is SQL Server 2008 R2 a full release of SQL Server?

    - by AaronBertrand
This has come up in conversations more than once in the past little while - recently on twitter I made the casual comment that later this year, SQL Server 2008 will be "two versions old." Well, not everyone agrees that that is technically true. So, I thought I'd put something out there that isn't limited to 140 characters. There are certainly some valid arguments on both sides, but my opinion - based both on these facts and on my memory that Microsoft has marketed it as such - is that SQL Server...(read more)

  • Design for XML mapping scenarios between two different systems [on hold]

    - by deepak_prn
Mapping XML fields between two systems is a mundane routine in integration scenarios. I am trying to make the design documents look better and provide clear understanding to the developers especially when we do not use XSLT or any other IDE such as jDeveloper or eclipse plugins. I want it to be a high level design but at the same time talk in developer's language. So that there is no requirements that slip under the crack. For example, one of the scenarios goes: the store cashier sells an item, the transaction data is sent to Data management system. Now, I am writing a functional design for the scenario which deals with mapping XML fields between our system and the data management system. Question : I was wondering if some one had to deal with mapping XML fields between two systems? (without XSLT being involved) and if you used a table to represent the fields mapping (example is below) or any other visualization tool which does not break the bank ? I am trying to find out if there is a better way to represent XML mapping in your design documents. The widely accepted and used method seems to be using a simple table such as in the picture to illustrate the mapping. I am wondering if there are alternate ways/ tools to represent such as in Altova:

  • SQL SERVER – Template Browser – A Very Important and Useful Feature of SSMS

    - by pinaldave
Let me start today’s blog post with a direction question. How many of you have ever used Template Browser? Template Browser is a very important and useful feature of SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS). Every time when I am talking about SQL Server there is always someone comes up with the question, why there is no step by step procedure included in SSMS for features. Honestly every time I get this question, the question I ask back is How many of you have ever used Template Browser? I think the answer to this question is most of the time either no or we have not heard of the feature. One of the people asked me back – have you ever written about it on your blog? I have not yet written about it. Basically there is nothing much to write about it. It is pretty straight forward feature, like any other feature and it is indeed difficult to elaborate. However, I will try to give a quick introduction to this feature. Templates are like a quick cheat sheet or quick reference. Templates are available to create objects like databases, tables, views, indexes, stored procedures, triggers, statistics, and functions. Templates are also available for Analysis Services as well. The template scripts contain parameters to help you customize the code. You can Replace Template Parameters dialog box to insert values into the script. Additionally users can create new custom templates as well with folder structure. To open a template from Template Explorer Go to View menu >> Template Explorer or type CTRL+ALT+L. You will find a list of categories click on any category and expand the folder structure. For our sample example let us expand Index Folder. In this folder you will notice the various T-SQL Scripts. These scripts can be opened by double click or can be dragged to editor area and modified as needed. Sample template is now available in the query editor area with all the necessary parameter place folder. You can replace the same parameter by typing either CTRL+SHIFT+M or by going to Query Menu >> Specify Values for Template Parameters. In this screen it will show  Specify Values for Template Parameters dialog box, accept the value or replace it with a new value. This will now get your script ready to go. Check it one more time and change the script to fit your requirement. I personally use template explorer for two things. First one is obviously for templates but the hidden one and an important one is for learning new features and T-SQL commands. There is so much to learn and so little time. • Convience of mySQL over xml

    - by Bonechilla
Currently I use XML to store specific information to correctly load a few things such as a list of specfied characters, scenes and music, Once more I use JAXB in combination with standard compression/decompression(ZIP) functionality to store a list of extrenous data. This data is called to add functionality to the character, somewhat like Skills in an RPG. Each skill is seperated into its own XML file with a grandlist which contains the names of each file with their extensions omitted and zipped in folder that gets encrypted. At first using xml was working fine however as the skill list grow i worry about its stability. I was wondering if I should begin storing the data in mySQL. Originally I planned to simply convert everything to JSON over xml but i think possibly mySQL would be a better move. Can anyone inform me of the key difference and pros and cons of each I guess i'm looking for the best way to store the data more conviently and would be easier to operate on. The data is mostly primatives and strings and the only arraylist of values i have i can just concat into a single field and parse later

So I tried the following trick: java.util.logging.Logger.getLogger("javax.xml.ws.WebServiceException").setLevel( java.util.logging.Level.OFF); it didn't worked neither. Any ideas ? It is not a big issue but it makes my catalina.log getting bigger & bigger and it's not the appropriate place for this kind of log. Chris

  • How to include multiple XML files in a single XML file for deserialization by XmlSerializer in .NET

    - by harrydev
Hi, is it possible to use the XmlSerializer in .NET to load an XML file which includes other XML files? And how? This, in order to share XML state easily in two "parent" XML files, e.g. AB and BC in below. Example: using System; using System.IO; using System.Xml.Serialization; namespace XmlSerializerMultipleFilesTest { [Serializable] public class A { public int Value { get; set; } } [Serializable] public class B { public double Value { get; set; } } [Serializable] public class C { public string Value { get; set; } } [Serializable] public class AB { public A A { get; set; } public B B { get; set; } } [Serializable] public class BC { public B B { get; set; } public C C { get; set; } } class Program { public static void Serialize<T>(T data, string filePath) { using (var writer = new StreamWriter(filePath)) { var xmlSerializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(T)); xmlSerializer.Serialize(writer, data); } } public static T Deserialize<T>(string filePath) { using (var reader = new StreamReader(filePath)) { var xmlSerializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(T)); return (T)xmlSerializer.Deserialize(reader); } } static void Main(string[] args) { const string fileNameA = @"A.xml"; const string fileNameB = @"B.xml"; const string fileNameC = @"C.xml"; const string fileNameAB = @"AB.xml"; const string fileNameBC = @"BC.xml"; var a = new A(){ Value = 42 }; var b = new B(){ Value = Math.PI }; var c = new C(){ Value = "Something rotten" }; Serialize(a, fileNameA); Serialize(b, fileNameB); Serialize(c, fileNameC); // How can AB and BC be deserialized from single // files which include two of the A, B or C files. // Using ideally something like: var ab = Deserialize<AB>(fileNameAB); var bc = Deserialize<BC>(fileNameBC); // That is, so that A, B, C xml file // contents are shared across these two } } } Thus, the A, B, C files contain the following: A.xml: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <A xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <Value>42</Value> </A> B.xml: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <B xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <Value>3.1415926535897931</Value> </B> C.xml: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <C xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <Value>Something rotten</Value> </C> And then the "parent" XML files would contain a XML include file of some sort (I have not been able to find anything like this), such as: AB.xml: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <AB xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <A include="A.xml"/> <B include="B.xml"/> </AB> BC.xml: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <BC xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <B include="B.xml"/> <C include="C.xml"/> </BC> Of course, I guess this can be solved by implementing IXmlSerializer for AB and BC, but I was hoping there was an easier solution or a generic solution with which classes themselves only need the [Serializable] attribute and nothing else. That is, the split into multiple files is XML only and handled by XmlSerializer itself or a custom generic serializer on top of this. I know this should be somewhat possible with app.config (as in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/480538/use-xml-includes-or-config-references-in-app-config-to-include-other-config-files), but I would prefer a solution based on XmlSerializer. Thanks.

  • XML serialization query

    - by David Neale
I have the following XML which needs deserializing/serializing: <instance> <dog> <items> <item> <label>Spaniel</label> </item> </items> </dog> <cat> <items> <item> <label>Tabby</label> </item> </items> </cat> </instance> I cannot change the XML structure. I need to map this to the following class: [Serializable, XmlRoot("instance")] public class AnimalInstance { public string Dog { get; set; } public string Cat { get; set; } } I'm not really sure where to start on this one without manually parsing the XML. I'd like to keep the code as brief as possible. Any ideas? (and no, my project doesn't actually involve cats and dogs).

Suppose I have this XML as a string: <calles> <calle> <nombre>CALLAO AV.</nombre> <altura>1500</altura> <longitud>-58.3918617027</longitud> <latitud>-34.5916734896</latitud> <barrio>Recoleta</barrio> </calle> </calles> And and have this Type I created to map that XML: public class Ubicacion { public string Latitud { get; set; } public string Longitud { get; set; } public string Nombre { get; set; } public string Altura { get; set; } public string Barrio { get; set; } public Ubicacion() { } } I need to take that XML file and create an object with those values... Does somebody know a quick way to do it? with C#? I have been trying this but is not working at all... XElement dir = XElement.Parse(text); Ubicacion informacion = from d in dir.Elements("calle"). select new Ubicacion { Longitud = d.Element("longitud").Value, Latitud = d.Element("latitud").Value, Altura = d.Element("altura").Value, Nombre = d.Element("nombre").Value, Barrio = d.Element("barrio").Value, }; return informacion.Cast<Ubicacion>(); } Any ideas? Thanks!!!

  • How to retain XML string as a string field during XML deserialization

    - by detale
I got an XML input string and want to deserialize it to an object which partially retain the raw XML. <SetProfile> <sessionId>A81D83BC-09A0-4E32-B440-0000033D7AAD</sessionId> <profileDataXml> <ArrayOfProfileItem> <ProfileItem> <Name>Pulse</Name> <Value>80</Value> </ProfileItem> <ProfileItem> <Name>BloodPresure</Name> <Value>120</Value> </ProfileItem> </ArrayOfProfileItem> </profileDataXml> </SetProfile> The class definition: public class SetProfile { public Guid sessionId; public string profileDataXml; } I hope the deserialization syntax looks like string inputXML = "..."; // the above XML XmlSerializer xs = new XmlSerializer(typeof(SetProfile)); using (TextReader reader = new StringReader(inputXML)) { SetProfile obj = (SetProfile)xs.Deserialize(reader); // use obj .... } but XMLSerializer will throw an exception and won't output < profileDataXml 's descendants to "profileDataXml" field in raw XML string. Is there any way to implement the deserialization like that?

Reason: The following elements are expected at this location (see below) <artist> Error location: music-library / artist Details cvc-model-group: Element <artist> unexpected by type '{anonymous}' of element <music-library>. cvc-elt.5.2.1: The element <music-library> is not valid with respect to the actual type definition '{anonymous}'.
