• Please Stop Voting Against a Candidate

  DISCLAIMER:  This is not a post about “Romney” or “Obama”.  This is not a post for whom I am voting.  This is simply a post to address an issue that I cannot ignore any longer.  This two-party system that we have allowed to establish a foothold is killing this country.    More than 2 Options I was recently asked, “If you had to choose Romney or Obama who would you pick?”  I replied “Non sequiter.  The founders of this nation ensured that I never have to pick from only two candidates.”  But somehow that is the way this country’s citizens think.  I told someone last week that there are around 20 candidates for president and she was genuinely surprised.  (There are actually 25 candidates.)  She had no idea there were that many and, even though she knew there are more, she didn’t know any names beyond Romney and Obama.  Well, I am going to try and educate people like her on other options. Vote for a Candidate, not against another Candidate So this post is the first in a series with a little bit of information about each candidate for president.  I implore you…I beg you, please do your civic duty and conduct a little bit of investigation and research on your own to find the right candidate for you.  Hey, if your candidate is Romney or Obama, that’s fine.  As long as it’s an educated decision.  But please…stop voting against a candidate.  Start voting for a candidate. • How to stop a Timer-X timer (jQuery)

  I'm using Timer-X's timerDelayCall function in order to have a repeating rotator on my page, which starts automatically as the page loads: jQuery.timerDelayCall({ interval: 2000, repeat: true, callback: function(timer) { ... (my rotator logic here) } } }); The problem is that I'm trying to make a function that includes stopping that timer: function signUp() { ... (timer stop code here) } The documentation stats that timer.stop() does that, but however I format it, I get errors about it not being declared. I have tried every variation I can think of, such as: timer.stop(); jQuery.timer.stop(); $(document).timer.stop(); jQuery.timerDelayCall({ callback: function(timer) { timer.stop() } }); I'm sure I'm missing something simple - I come from a PHP background yet I'm new to javascript - but can't see what it is exactly. Help is much appreciated!

• Tool for search, watch and download youtube videos on Ubuntu

  I am looking for a tool like MacTubes for Ubuntu. MacTubes is a mac app that can search, watch and download youtube videos. The great advantage of this app is that it searches youtube and shows all videos available there and allows you to select all and download everything fast and easy. MacTubes is so awesome that it also converts the video to MP4 and downloads the HD version of a video when available. I use this on my mac, but my sister uses Linux and I am looking for something like that for her. I have tried Miro, but Miro's search feature is bad as hell. I search for something using MacTubes and it shows me 1600 results. The same search under Miro shows me 40 results. Miro never shows more than one page of results. I prefer it to be an application with a GUI, instead of command line, because my sister's proficiency in Linux is not that good. Any suggestions? Thanks.

  I am trying to create a karaoke from a CD+G file (converted to AVI using FFmpeg) and add a video as a background of the lyrics. Here's a screenshot of a the output from CD+G conversion, for simplicity let's call this lyrics.avi http://imgur.com/wUwHUhV Now a have this video.mp4 file that I'd like to put behind this lyrics.avi Here's a sample of what I'm trying to achieve http://imgur.com/8GuWXtQ I'm sure most of you are familiar with karaoke. I haven't used FFmpeg much and I'm not really sure if what I want to achieve is possible with FFmpeg. Is it possible to overlay two videos, and add a transparency to one of the videos? In this case the colour black? How can I set the offset time of the lyrics.avi? • Windows freezes when watching videos

  I have Acer laptop Aspire 5740 - 5780 with windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. I am using Chrome. Windows is 1 year old, but it's not the first time this has happened. Windows freezes whenever I am watching videos on facebook/youtube or when using SopCast. I thought there was some faulty plugin, so I recently re-installed chrome but it happened again. No keys work, and the sound of whatever I am listening starts repeating like grrrr..drrrr. Its seems like the sound in very slow motion. One time I left it in this freeze state for 5 min and it recovered automatically. It usually does not happen when I am using windows media player. I had some codecs installed but I removed them to see if that fixes. So far, I have narrowed it down to youtube/footytube videos and sopcast. I have checked event logs but nothing special. Is there any way I can narrow down the problem or any suggestions on how to fix it. I'd like to add that it does not always happen. Sometimes windows goes days/weeks without freezing, and sometimes it take a min into video to freeze.

• Computer freezes after watching Youtube videos

  I had Windows 7 installed all september. But I installed Windows XP Professional back because my computer couldn't handle the new OS. After first boot I tried to install newest flash player (from Adobe website), but it failed. I had my old setup on USB drive and it worked. I don't know is it important or not. I am watching Youtube videos in my free time (almost every hour). After few days the computer started to freeze when I open a page with the video or close the page with video, not while I watch a video. No BSODs. Nothing in Event viewer. I use Firefox only. When computer freezes the sound wont. If iTunes is playing a radio station or is it another video playing in background, the sound wont freeze. Last few days the mouse wont freeze. Its a strange symptom. If I click few times then the cursor will actually freeze. I just want to know where does this problem come from (hardware - graphics card, old motherboard or it's just some glitch in setups). If it's not graphics card then I will be happy. The graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 4650 - brand new. Catalyst 11.8 installed. Things I have tried: Installed newest flash player after a week (the setup didn't fail this time) Installed latest video drivers Deleting cookies Defragmenting hard drive Using TuneUp utilities for computer cleenup Installed latest Mozilla Firefox Cleaned the PC Changed CPU Fan speed almost to max (just to be sure) Things I haven't tried yet: Didn't try playing videos on other browsers What can I do now?

• Select videos using UIImagePickerController in 2G/3G

  Hi, I am facing a problem where-in I cannot select videos from the photo album in iPhone 2G/3G device. The default photos application does show videos and is capable of playing them, which in turn means that UIImagePickerController should clearly be capable of showing videos in photo album and selecting them. I havent tested for 3GS, but I am sure that this problem does not exist in it with reference to other threads. I have built the app for both 3.0 (base SDK) and 3.1 but with the same results. • how do I match movement of an object from 2d video into a 3d package ?

  I'm trying to add objects in a 3d package(Blender) using recorded footage. I've played with Icarus and it's great to capture the camera movement. Also the Blender 2.41 importer script works in Blender 2.49 as well. The problem is I can't seem to get 3d coordinates for objects. I have tried Autodesk(RealVIZ) MatchMover 2011 and gone through the tutorials. Tutorial 3 shows how to link a vertex from a 3d mesh to a 2d trackpoint, but the setup is for camera movement. Tutorial 4 goes into Motion capture, but it uses 2 videos of the same motion taken with 2 cameras from different viewpoints. I've tried to bypass that using the same footage twice, but that failed, as the 3d coordinate system ends up messed up. What software do you recommend for this (mapping 3d coordinates to 2d tracked points and importing them into a 3d package) ? What is the recommended technique ? Any good examples out there ? The problem is, on subsequent slides I need the previously-moved images to appear in their Motion Path destinations and I can't seem to get them to line up perfectly. The resulting effect is a smoothly moving image that suddenly "jumps" a few pixels on a slide transition. How can I get images to appear exactly at the end of their Motion Paths in subsequent slides?

• iPad MPMoviePlayerController only hearing audio, no videos!

  I am currently rebuilding my app for the iPad. I would like to play the videos sourced online. I display the information and when i go to play the video all i get is the audio... No video is shown at all. My page looks exactly the same except that i have some "background" noise. These are the same videos i use on the iPhone app and they work perfectly This is the code that i call to play my videos - (IBAction) playMovie{ NSURL *url = [NSURL URLWithString:vidMovie]; MPMoviePlayerController *moviePlayer = [[MPMoviePlayerController alloc]initWithContentURL:url]; [moviePlayer play]; } I am using this on a button on the right side view of a splitViewController. I get the same result in my simulator as on an iPad. Not sure if i'm missing something, but if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated!

  How can I efficiently retrieve a list of channels that a Vimeo video is listed in from the Advanced Vimeo API? The Advanced Vimeo API provides the methods channels.addVideo and channels.removeVideo for managing the channels a video belongs to. Also, the channels.getVideos method is provided for retrieving the list of videos belonging to a channel. However, there is no videos.getChannels method. This means that in order to find all the channels a video is included in one would need to call channels.getVideos (possibly more than once if the channel has more than 50 videos) for each channel of interest. This seems terribly inefficient.

• Logging won't stop on log file after renaming/moving it.... how do I stop it?

  Just discovered that logrotate is not rotating our firewall log. So its up to 12g in size. I need to split up the file into smaller chunks and start manually rotating them so I can get things back on track. However before I start splitting the firewall up, I need to stop the firewall from logging to the current firewall log file and force it to start logging to a new empty file. This way I'm not trying to split up or rotate a log file that is still constantly growing. I tried to simply do this: mv firewall firewall.old touch firewall I expected to see the new empty firewall file to start growing in size, but no... the firewall.old is still be logged to. Then I tried to start/stop iptables. No change. firewall.old is still the log file. I tried to move it to another directory. That didn't help. I tried to stop iptables, then change the filename and create a new firewall file and then start iptables again, but no change. How do I stop the logging on this file and force it to start logging on a new file?

• Can start-stop-daemon use environmental variables?

  I need to daemonize a Windows app running in Wine, and create a pid in /var/run. Since it requires an X11 session to run, I need to make sure the $DISPLAY variable is set in the running user's environment. Assuming I already have a X11 session running, with a given display, here's what the start-stop-daemon line looks like in my /etc/init.d script: start-stop-daemon --start --pidfile /var/run/wine-app.pid -m -c myuser -g mygroup -k 002 --exec /home/myuser/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/wine-app.exe Unfortunately, my version of start-stop-daemon on Ubuntu 8.04 doesn't have the -e option to set environmental variables. I gather that you could simply set $DISPLAY before the command, like so: VAR1="Value" start-stop-daemon ... But it doesn't work. Since I'm using the -c {user} option to run as a specific user, I'm guessing there's an environment switch and VAR1 is lost. I've tried exporting DISPLAY from the running user's .profile and/or .bashrc but it doesn't work either. Is there another way to do this? Is this even possible? Am I overlooking something? • STOP 0x7b booting from iSCSI

  Hi, I've a Windows 2008 SBS running. It boots of iSCSI. That setup worked for months until yesterday. I intended to reboot and gained a: STOP 0x0000007b INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE and no idea why. My setup hasn't changed. No new controller, no new or changed iSCSI targets, no new Network Card or IP address changes. I had all Windows Updates on it. Last known good: same STOP. Allow unsigned drivers: same STOP. Safe mode (all variants): same STOP. Mount target from a client: works. Filesystem check fine. I booted of the SBS DVD but in computer repair options my target doesn't appear. When i choose setup the target appears. So, how can i diagnose what's going wrong? Any helpful tools? Any hints? • Watermarking Flash Videos (server-side)

  Hi all, I have a bunch of flash videos that I need to watermark with user related information, to make illegal re-distribution of these files harder. I'm wondering how can this be done server-side. If done client-side, it will be quite easy for the user to intercept the videos before they are watermarked. Since the watermark should contain user-specific information I can't really watermark the videos before encoding them (unless I have an encoded video per user - not feasible). I'm expecting this to affect the streaming performances a lot, though. Any idea how this can be done (possibly in an efficient way)?

  Hi, I have recently moved my RoR app on the Heroku platform, and almost everything works fine apart from the videos. It works fine when my app runs in local but not on heroku. • Logging won't stop on log file after renaming/moving it.... how do I stop it?

  Just discovered that logrotate is not rotating our firewall log. So it's up to 12G in size. I need to split up the file into smaller chunks and start manually rotating them so I can get things back on track. However before I start splitting the firewall up, I need to stop the firewall from logging to the current firewall log file and force it to start logging to a new empty file. This way I'm not trying to split up or rotate a log file that is still constantly growing. I tried to simply do this: mv firewall firewall.old touch firewall I expected to see the new empty firewall file to start growing in size, but no... the firewall.old is still be logged to. Then I tried to start/stop iptables. No change. firewall.old is still the log file. I tried to move it to another directory. That didn't help. I tried to stop iptables, then change the filename and create a new firewall file and then start iptables again, but no change. How do I stop the logging on this file and force it to start logging on a new file?

  This is the idea: I want to have a video where I appear twice. With pictures this is easy: you take two pictures of yourself without moving the camera, once in each corner of the room, and then combine half and half with MS Paint. What free Windows program can do this with videos? Also, I later want to record some more sound over it. Will that same program allow me to do that, or do I need something else?
