• [Linq & Dictionary (.NET)] A problem with compare item value

- by Tony
Hi, I have defined my class: public class Host { public string Name; } then a strobgly-typed dictionary: Dictionary<string, Host> HostsTable; then I try to compare a value: if (HostsTable.Values.Where(s => s.Name == "myhostname") != null) { doSomething } and the problem is, nothing is found, even I'm sure the item is on the list. What I'm doing wrong ?

• python- scipy optimization

- by pear
In scipy fmin_slsqp (Sequential Least Squares Quadratic Programming), I tried reading the code 'slsqp.py' provided with the scipy package, to find what are the criteria to get the exit_modes 0? • Why Cornell University Chose Oracle Data Masking

- by Troy Kitch
One of the eight Ivy League schools, Cornell University found itself in the unfortunate position of having to inform over 45,000 University community members that their personal information had been breached when a laptop was stolen. To ensure this wouldn’t happen again, Cornell took steps to ensure that data used for non-production purposes is de-identified with Oracle Data Masking. A recent podcast highlights why organizations like Cornell are choosing Oracle Data Masking to irreversibly de-identify production data for use in non-production environments. Organizations often copy production data, that contains sensitive information, into non-production environments so they can test applications and systems using “real world” information. Data in non-production has increasingly become a target of cyber criminals and can be lost or stolen due to weak security controls and unmonitored access. Similar to production environments, data breaches in non-production environments can cost millions of dollars to remediate and cause irreparable harm to reputation and brand. Cornell’s applications and databases help carry out the administrative and academic mission of the university. They are running Oracle PeopleSoft Campus Solutions that include highly sensitive faculty, student, alumni, and prospective student data. This data is supported and accessed by a diverse set of developers and functional staff distributed across the university. Several years ago, Cornell experienced a data breach when an employee’s laptop was stolen. Centrally stored backup information indicated there was sensitive data on the laptop. With no way of knowing what the criminal intended, the university had to spend significant resources reviewing data, setting up service centers to handle constituent concerns, and provide free credit checks and identity theft protection services—all of which cost money and took time away from other projects. To avoid this issue in the future Cornell came up with several options; one of which was to sanitize the testing and training environments. “The project management team was brought in and they developed a project plan and implementation schedule; part of which was to evaluate competing products in the market-space and figure out which one would work best for us. In the end we chose Oracle’s solution based on its architecture and its functionality.” – Tony Damiani, Database Administration and Business Intelligence, Cornell University The key goals of the project were to mask the elements that were identifiable as sensitive in a consistent and efficient manner, but still support all the previous activities in the non-production environments. Tony concludes, “What we saw was a very minimal impact on performance. The masking process added an additional three hours to our refresh window, but it was well worth that time to secure the environment and remove the sensitive data. I think some other key points you can keep in mind here is that there was zero impact on the production environment. Oracle Data Masking works in non-production environments only. Additionally, the risk of exposure has been significantly reduced and the impact to business was minimal.” With Oracle Data Masking organizations like Cornell can: Make application data securely available in non-production environments Prevent application developers and testers from seeing production data Use an extensible template library and policies for data masking automation Gain the benefits of referential integrity so that applications continue to work Listen to the podcast to hear the complete interview. Learn more about Oracle Data Masking by registering to watch this SANS Institute Webcast and view this short demo.

• Microsoft Townhall, An Example for Azure and MVC

- by Shaun
Microsoft just released an example named Microsoft Townhall which was built and deployed on Azure. It uses ASP.NET MVC as its webiste framework and the SQL Azure plus LinqToSQL as its the database and the ORM framework. You can download the source code at the MSDN Code Gallery. Basides the Azure it might be more useful to us to learn how they utilized ASP.NET MVC. Just a very quickly review I found it utilized the Enterprise Library Unity as the main IoC container for controllers, services and repositories and customized a lot of ModelBinders, Filters, etc. Hope this helps, Shaun All documents and related graphics, codes are provided "AS IS" without warranty of any kind. • Found a good tool for jQuery Coding – jQueryPad

- by Shaun
Just found a good (looks like) tool for jQuery coding and debugging from the appinn.com (Chinese) named jQueryPad by Paul Stovell. With it we don’t need to switch between the visual studio and the browser when coding and debugging. There’s only one main screen where we can type the HTML and jQuery code and just press F5 to see the result in the bottom frame. .NET Frameworks 3.5 is required. Hope this helps. • Windows Azure SDK 1.2 Available - .NET 4.0 Support

- by Shaun
The Windows Azure team had just announced the release of the latest version of its tools and SDK (v1.2) at the TechED 2010 New Orleans. You can download it here. The biggest new feature/improvement of this version of the SDK would be Visual Studio 2010 RTM and .NET 4.0 support. It gives us the facilities to build our azure-based applications on top of .NET 3.5 and 4.0 as well. So the guys who is working on, like me, or is going to be working on .NET 4 would better to have this SDK installed I think. Also there are some other information about the envolution of the Windows Azure at this TechED session you can find here. Hope this helps, Shaun All documents and related graphics, codes are provided "AS IS" without warranty of any kind. I tried to use the Encoding class that convert string to char[] to byte[] and then to String, but no help, the string is input directly fron the database. Here is some example Tôi tên là Ð?c, cu?c s?ng th?t vui v? tuy?t v?i It does not show the special character like : Ð or ?... instead it show up ?, much worse with the Encoding class. Does anyone can try this out or know about this problem? Thank you My code static void Main(string[] args) { XDataContext _new = new XDataContext(); Console.OutputEncoding = Encoding.GetEncoding("UTF-8"); string srcString = _new.Posts.First().TITLE; Console.WriteLine(srcString); // Convert the UTF-16 encoded source string to UTF-8 and ASCII. byte[] utf8String = Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes(srcString); byte[] asciiString = Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes(srcString); // Write the UTF-8 and ASCII encoded byte arrays. • LINQ for SQL Developers and DBA’s

- by AtulThakor
Firstly I’d just like to thank the guys who organise the SQL Server User Group (Martin/Tony/Chris) and for giving me the opportunity to speak at the recent event. Sorry about the slides taking so long but here they are along with some extra information. Firstly the demo’s were all done using LINQPad 4.0 which can be downloaded here: http://www.linqpad.net/ There are 2 versions 3.5/4.0 With 3.5 you should be able to replicate the problem I showed where a query using a parameter which is X characters long would create a different execution plan to a query which uses a parameter which is Y characters long, otherwise I would just use 4.0 The sample database used is AdventureWorksLT2008 which can be downloaded from here: http://msftdbprodsamples.codeplex.com/releases/view/37109 The scripts have been named so that you can select the appropriate way to run them i.e.: C# expression / C#statement, each script can be run individually be highlighting the query and clicking the play symbol or hitting F5. Scripts and Slides: http://sqlblogcasts.com/blogs/atulthakor/An%20Introduction%20to%20LINQ.zip Please don't hesitate in sending any questions via email/twitter, I’ll try my best to answer your questions! Thanks, Atul

• Podcast: Oracle Introduces Oracle Communications Data Model

- by kimberly.billings
I recently sat down with Tony Velcich from Oracle's Communications Product Management team to learn more about the new Oracle Communications Data Model (OCDM). OCDM is a standards-based data model for Oracle Database that helps communications service providers jumpstart data warehouse and business intelligence initiatives to realize a fast return on investment by reducing implementation time and costs. Listen to the podcast. var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? "https://ssl." : "http://www."); document.write(unescape("%3Cscript src='" + gaJsHost + "google-analytics.com/ga.js' type='text/javascript'%3E%3C/script%3E")); try { var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-13185312-1"); pageTracker._trackPageview(); } catch(err) {}

• Book review: SQL Server Transaction Log Management

- by Hugo Kornelis
It was an offer I could not resist. I was promised a free copy of one of the newest books from Red Gate Books , SQL Server Transaction Log Management (by Tony Davis and Gail Shaw ), with the caveat that I should write a review after reading it. Mind you, not a commercial, “make sure we sell more copies” kind of review, but a review of my actual thoughts. Yes, I got explicit permission to be my usual brutally honest self. A total win/win for me! First, I get a free book – and free is always good,...(read more)

• Leveraging the Cloud to drive down costs and increase IT Agility

The age of capital intensive IT is a thing of the past as scalability and pay-for-use will dominate in the new normal and as such, IT transformation is a necessity to make scalable what has traditionally been a largely fixed cost operation. IT functions can increase their agile capability most effectively by employing on-demand strategies that drive cost and capacity variability into their services rather than purely their technology. As companies move to the cloud they will also see an increase in their ability to accelerate time to market and capacity for innovation. Join us for this short, but informative interview with Tony Chauhan, Sr. Advisor with The Hackett Group as he provides his insights into effective cloud strategies.

• FFmpeg multi pass encoding

- by Levan
Sorry, I am really new to this, and have problems doing some tasks without help. So I have a terminal command: ffmpeg \ -y \ -i '/media/levan/BEEA60D8EA608E89/Downloads/Videos/Tony Braxton - Un-Break My Heart.VOB' \ -s 1920x1080 \ -aspect 16:9 \ -r 25 \ -b 15550k \ -bt 19792k \ -vcodec libtheora \ -acodec libvorbis \ -ac 2 \ -ar 48000 \ -ab 320k \ ddd.ogg and I want to have 3 pass video in output video, but how do I accomplish this? I found that I must write -pass n command some where, but where to write it I do not know. I tested this and wrote -pass 3 at the end but then the terminal just showed a > symbol.

• ASUS U24a can't boot without live disk

- by user98965
I recently picked up a new ASUS U24a while travelling in asia. I've managed to go through hell with the UEFI setup, and finally now have a working GRUB. However, I can't manage to get past the "Loading initial ramdisk". If I boot the live CD-USB (only in BIOS legacy mode), I get a wonderful, working Ubuntu. I finally managed to get UEFI installed on the hard-drive (no option for legacy BIOS boot, or I'd be there in a flash!), and can boot in UEFI mode into GRUB2. But... I can't manage to get past the "loading initial ramdisk". It appears that the disk drivers are failing (there is no disk activity after this point). Ideas? pastebin from the boot-repair is at: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1290011/ best, -tony

• Adding confirmable module to an existing site using Devise

- by slythic
Hi all, I'm using devise for a web app and wanted to add the confirmable module to the site. However, since a confirmation_token isn't generated users can't sign in. When clicking the 'Didn't receive confirmation instructions?' link the token still isn't generated. What is the best way to get this to work? Many thanks, Tony
