  • Applying the Windows Experience Index to Servers

    I finally convinced upper management that we need a computer replacement plan, and I've been tasked with making an inventory of what we have and determining what needs to be replaced this year, next year, the year after, etc. I had to use some sort of criteria to back up my recommendations, so I decided to try using the Windows Experience Index. I've determined the CPU and Memory scores for all of our desktops and servers using community data. I also feel fairly successful in assigning a WEI score to each user based on their computing needs. I'm struggling with assigning a WEI score to the various servers that we have: file server, database server, Exchange server, backup server (for doing backups), web server. Suggestions would be appreciated.

  • How to print 4 index cards on a single A4 sheet in Word 2003

    I have an index card designed in Word. It's fairly complicated with graphics, borders and background. The page layout has been set to landscape and with size set to 4x6. How can I print this, 4x per A4 landscape sheet? I cannot for the life of me work it out. The printer always seems to do a single card per A4 sheet, wasting 3/4 of the page. "Pages 1,1,1,1" will result in 4 sheets being printed. What am I doing wrong?

  • How do I use apt-get to update to the latest kernel?

    My current kernel is 3.2.0-26 (my main computer) while on another of my Ubuntu computers, with which I didn't fiddle with unofficial updates, it's 3.2.0-30. Yet the Update manager on my main computer doesn't show available kernel updates. It shows other updates though. I suspect is due to the fact that in the past I installed multiple mainline kernel versions (not recommended versions), up to 3.5* series. What I'm after: Either: Fix automatic kernel updates. Or: Learn about a way to check for the latest official ubuntu kernel version and get it manually (I know how to install kernels from debs) What I have already tried: Uninstalled unused kernels including "the generic one without a number" as per http://askubuntu.com/a/103875/29347 and then also https://ubuntugenius.wordpress.com/2011/01/08/ubuntu-cleanup-how-to-remove-all-unused-linux-kernel-headers-images-and-modules/

  • Can I run `apt-get purge --auto-remove`?

    Is apt-get purge --auto-remove packagename a valid command? Or, does it have to be apt-get remove --purge --auto-remove packagename? The Ubuntu manpage for apt-get (http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/precise/man8/apt-get.8.html) only mentions using the --auto-remove option "If the command is either install or remove...", so I was wondering if it could also be used with the purge command, since that is just a shortcut for the remove command with the --purge option.     I've upgraded recently from Windows Vista to Windows 8. When I try to rate my computer, it accesses DirectX 9 performance, then processes to DirectX 10 tests: And it gets stuck at this point. In 5–10 minutes, it shows error message: The video card is rather old: Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family. I'm pretty sure it does not support DirectX 10. Why does Windows assess it with DirectX 10? And how can I make it skip DirectX 10 tests and get the system rating? The driver was installed automatically by Windows 8 from Windows Update.   • How to configure Unity/Compiz in 12.04 so that Update Manager opens maximized w/screen bigger than 1024×600?

    In Precise, window auto-maximize is disabled on monitors with a resolution above 1024 × 600 [1]. I have a bigger resolution, but I prefer maximized windows anyway. I want Update Manager to start maximized. What I've tried so far: In Compiz Config Settings Manager, I have Place Windows activated and 'Windows with fixed placement mode' has windows matching the rule "(name=gnome-terminal) | (name=update-manager)" set to 'Maximize'. With this, Gnome Terminal starts maximized, Update Manager does not. In Compiz Config Settings Manager, I have set a Window Rules [2] rule to match "name=update-manager". Irregardless of any rules set or not, activating Window Rules results in not being able to bring out Unity Launcher anymore, Alt+Tab window switching becoming slow or nonfunctional entirely and the screen sporadically freezing completely. Not a viable option apparently. I've installed Maximus [3] and started it. Update Manager ignores it (or vice versa). I've not tried devilspie and would prefer not to. Having to configure something external for this would seem stupidly redundant with (the no-brainer) Maximus and all these Compiz options already available. I just can't seem to make them work.   • Partial upgrade error

    this is an issue I have googled a lot and I have tried a lot of fixes, but non of them really worked. At some point (I can't remember when/how) my Update system sort of broke, and since then it is always complaining about "Not all updates can be installed, run a Partial Upgrade". If I click on Partial Upgrade, I get the following result But running apt-get install -f does not fix anything, and at the end I always get the following message Funny thing is that my apt-get system works perfect on Console. I can update my system through apt-get update, apt-get upgrade etc.. So.. how can I fix the graphic interface? I understand that my apt-get system is not broken, but somehow its GUI it is. Any thoughts about it? THANKS! P.D: I have already tried sudo dpkg --configure -a and sudo apt-get autoremove

    Hi, Yesterday I shutdown my notebook, and Windows 7 Ultimate started to install automatic updates. After one hour, I noticed that the update was still running. I thought OK, I shall go to sleep and let it run. In the morning it was still running. Thus, I thought it had crashed, forced a shutdown of the notebook and then restarted it. With the same effect that the notebook is "freezing" at "Install Update 1 of 5". It does not look like it has crashed. The progress wheel is still moving. But it does not make any progress... Would appreciate any help! Edit: OK, I was able to log-in into safe mode. This way I passed the install update screen. I do not want to generally disable updates, what can I do to not install the last update, which is creating troube. Or how can I find out whats the problem with the last update?

The apps are: Keynote, Numbers, Pages, Skitch, Evernote, Fotor. 'Check for unfinished downloads' reports all downloads have finished. Signing out and back in and reloading didn't help. $ sudo softwareupdate -ia Password: Software Update Tool Copyright 2002-2012 Apple Inc. Finding available software No updates are available. Googling didn't help. How can I fix the GUI tool so it updates its status? OSX 10.9.3

    An "Important" update for Microsoft Works (via Windows Update) on a Dell netbook gets about halfway through and then pops up with the super-awesome "Please insert Microsoft Works 9.0 disc" message. Of course, the netbook has no CD rom drive, there is no handy folder (that i can find) containing "Works9.msi", and I have no Works9 disc. It wouldn't be so bad, except the update keeps coming up everytime WU runs. Any suggestions?

    The actual links in the Windows Update window to open the relevant knowledge base article have stopped working. They still look like links, but they just don't do anything anymore?! This started happening (or not happening!) during the last Windows Update (around 2010-10-23). At the time I believe the first link worked OK and all subsequent links did not!? In the recent Windows Update (today) no links work. I can copy and paste the text of the link into the browser and OK. Web-like links from all other applications work OK. Dec 2010 - Windows Update links still do not work. I guess this must be something specific to my machine as I've not seen it reported anywhere else?!

  • Newbie database index question

    I have a table with multiple indexes, several of which duplicate the same columns: Index 1 columns: X, B, C, D Index 2 columns: Y, B, C, D Index 3 columns: Z, B, C, D I'm not very knowledgeable on indexing in practice, so I'm wondering if somebody can explain why X, Y and Z were paired with these same columns. B is an effective date. C is a semi-unique key ID for this table for a specific effective date B. D is a sequence that identifies the priority of this record for the identifier C. Why not just create 6 indexes, one for each X, Y, Z, B, C, D? I want to add an index to another column T, but in some contexts I'll only be querying on T alone while in others I will also be specifying the B, C and D columns... so should I create just one index like above or should I create one for T and one for (T, B, C, D)? I've not had as much luck as expected when googling for comprehensive coverage of indexing. Any resources where I can get a through explanation and lots of examples of B-tree indexing?

  • Clustered index dilemma - ID or sort?

    I have a table with two very important fields: id INT identity(1,1) PRIMARY KEY identifiersortcode VARCHAR(900) My app always sorts and pages search results in the UI based on identifiersortcode, but all table joins (and they are legion) are on the id field. (Aside: yes, the sort code really is that long. There's a strong BL reason.) Also, due to O/RM use, most SELECT statements are going to pull almost every column. Currently, the clustered index is on id, but I'm wondering if the TOP / ORDER BY portion of most queries would make identifiersortcode a more attractive option as the clustered key, even considering all of the table joins going on. Inserts on the table and changes to the identifiersortcode are limited enough that changing my clustered index would be a problem for insert/update operations. Trying to make the sort code's non-clustered index a covering index (using INCLUDE) is not a good option. There are a number of large columns, and some of them have a lot of update activity.

    I am wondering about the performance of this index: I have an "Invalid" varchar(1) column that has 2 values: NULL or 'Y' I have an index on (invalid), as well as (invalid, last_validated) Last_validated is a datetime (this is used for a unrelated SELECT query) I am flagging a small amount of items (1-5%) of rows in the table with this as 'to be deleted'. This is so when i DELETE FROM items WHERE invalid='Y' it does not perform a full table scan for the invalid items. A problem seems to be, the actual DELETE is quite slow now, possibly because all the indexes are being removed as they are deleted. Would a bitmap index provide better performance for this? or perhaps no index at all?

    Hi, I’m having a question about the fine line between the gain of an index to a table there is growing steadily in size every month and the gain of queries with an index. The situation is, that I’ve two tables, Table1 and Table2. Each table grows slowly but regularly each month (with about 100 new rows for Table1 and a couple of rows for Table2). My concrete question is whether to have an index or to drop it. I’ve made some measurement that an covering index on Table2 improve my SELECT queries and some rather much but again, I’ve to consider the pros and cons but having a really hard time to decide. For Table1 it might not be necessary to have an index because the SELECT queries there is not that common. I would appreciate any suggestion, tips or just good advice to what is a good solution.   • CSS Experts required - problems with Z-Index stack in my page design

    Howdy y'all! Basically I'm having some problems with Z-Index. Although I'm not amazing at CSS I would reckon I was reasonably good, but really can't work this out. You'll see at the URL... http://howcode.com/code/ ... that my problem is that links in the returned 'Popular' results aren't clickable or anything. I've concluded this is due to their Z-Index being messed up. I had to fiddle and tweak with Z-Index to get the tabs - Popular, Top Rated, Featured etc. - to show above the codebg div. When I adjusted the Z-Index so that the results were definitely on top, they acted as normal - text could be selected, the ratings images hovered, etc. etc. However the downside to this was that my Popular, Top Rated, Featured tabs were all placed BENEATH the background image for the returned results. If anyone can post a workaround or alteration to my CSS that would be much appreciated. Please don't forget this is a test site and design and any other URLs are likely not to work, I haven't uploaded any database configs yet or whatever!
