• Efficient way to calculate byte length of a character, depending on the encoding

  What's the most efficient way to calculate the byte length of a character, taking the character encoding into account? In UTF-8 for example the characters have a variable byte length, so each character needs to be determined individually. As far now I've come up with this: char c = getItSomehow(); String encoding = "UTF-8"; int length = new String(new char[] { c }).getBytes(encoding).length; But this is clumsy and inefficient in a loop since a new String needs to be created everytime. I can't find other and more efficient ways in the Java API. I imagine that this can be done with bitwise operations like bit shifting, but that's my weak point and I'm unsure how to take the encoding into account here :) If you question the need for this, check this topic.

Quercus is providing ISO8859 encoding in default and all database in UTF-8 is not shown properly like ???. If anybody know the way to set Quercus db connection encoding to UTF-8, please help me. • PhpMyAdmin import/export - strange character encoding issues.

  Hello, I'm migrating a site to a new host, and there are a couple of databases on there. There's no SSH access so I'm stuck with phpmyadmin. The issue is that certain characters (namely just whitespace) seems to being corrupt on the new site (same html, and apache doesn't seem to be messing with any encodings - you can see the strange characters have changed when I use less on my linux machine after downloading a table dump from both servers.) The issue isn't as bad if I import into the new database as utf-8 - whitespace characters only have one funny A type symbol instead of two. I've been trying various combinations of character encoding etc to no avail. Exporting from: phpMyAdmin 2.6.2 MySQL 4.1.20 MySQL connection collation: utf8_general_ci MySQL charset: UTF-8 Unicode (utf8) Collation on tables and their fields is: latin1_swedish_ci Importing to: phpMyAdmin - 2.11.9.2 MySQL client version: 5.0.45 MySQL charset: UTF-8 Unicode (utf8) MySQL connection collation: utf8_general_ci The import sql has this kind of thing in it: ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=192 ; I get the impression this is actually a bug or something with mysqldump as nothing seems to work.. does anyone have any insight into this?   Hi, Im working on simle RSS reader. This reader loads data from internet via this code: NSXMLParser *rss = [[NSXMLParser alloc] initWithURL:[NSURL URLWithString:@"http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/50405236.rss"]]; My problem is with encoding. • Asp.net renders string with wrong encoding, but PHP doesn't (MySQL)

  I took over some old php application with MySQL as database. Inside the database, there are tables including content with localized strings (therefore containing special chars) Currently there is a PHP application accessing that database. My job is to create an ASP.net (C# codebehind) application that accesses that strings as well. That works, as far as encoding goes. If I try to access these strings, I do get a kind of encoding problem, like 'Ändern' and 'Prüfzeichen', but only in the ASP.net application. The PHP app sets utf-8 as charset and the strings are perfectly rendered. In the ASP.net application it's gibberish, regardless of the page encoding. In the MySQL database, the charset for the specified table 'translations' is set to 'latin --cp1252 West European' and collation to 'latin_swedish_ci'. I can't seem to figure out what PHP apparently does, and ASP.net does not. I traced the php code and could not find any sign of special encoding while getting a string from the database. The question is, how can I ensure correct encoding inside the ASP.net application without modifying the database, because big changes at the php code are not possible? Does anybody have a clue?

• Windows cmd encoding change causes Python crash.

  First I chage Windows CMD encoding to utf-8 and run Python interpreter: chcp 65001 python Then I try to print a unicode sting inside it and when i do this Python crashes in a peculiar way (I just get a cmd prompt in the same window). >>> import sys >>> print u'ëèæîð'.encode(sys.stdin.encoding) Any ideas why it happens and how to make it work? UPD: sys.stdin.encoding returns 'cp65001' UPD2: It just came to me that the issue might be connected with the fact that utf-8 uses multi-byte character set (kcwu made a good point on that). I tried running the whole example with 'windows-1250' and got 'ëeaî?'. Windows-1250 uses single-character set so it worked for those characters it understands. However I still have no idea how to make 'utf-8' work here. UPD3: Oh, I found out it is a known Python bug. I guess what happens is that Python copies the cmd encoding as 'cp65001 to sys.stdin.encoding and tries to apply it to all the input. Since it fails to understand 'cp65001' it crushes on any input that contains non-ascii characters.

• Servlet response wrapper has encoding problem

  A servlet response wrapper is being used in a Servlet Filter. The idea is that the response is manipulated, with a 'nonce' value being injected into forms, as part of defence against CSRF attacks. The web app is using UTF-8 everywhere. When the Servlet Filter is absent, no problems. When the filter is added, encoding issues occur. (It seems as if the response is reverting to 8859-1.) That is done here, as you can see, in two places. The value of the 'encoding' variable is 'UTF-8'; the alteration of the String itself is standard string manipulation (with a regex), and never specifies an encoding (addHiddenParamToPostedForms). Where am I in error about the encoding? • VB.NET encoding one character wrong

If I open that file in 010 Editor (to view the binary data) it displays as this: 47 43 44 53 79 73 74 65 6D 73 3F 0A 01 32 31 36 The original byte array contained 89 at position 11, and the encoded string contains 3F. If I change my encoding to Encoding.Default.GetString, it gives me: 47 43 44 53 79 73 74 65 6D 73 E2 80 B0 0A 01 32 31 36 Any help would be much appreciated!

• What is the simplest way to render video into memory (for drawing to a texture) in .NET?

  In my project I would like to be able to play back video on surfaces in the world. I intend to do this by having the video frames rendered to a block of memory, then use this to update a texture each frame. Everything is in place - except for the part that actually gets the video. I have looked on Google and found that the video library world is very expansive (and geared towards video processing), and am having trouble finding a suitable one. FFMpeg is very comprehensive, but is an entire suite and would take a good amount of work to integrate. So far the most promising library I've found is the one based on the VLC player libraries - by virtue of it using the same resources as VLC Player it is known to be very capable; it also renders to blocks of memory, but the API (at least of the one on Codeplex) is more of a port of the C++ API rather than a managed wrapper. The 'solution' can be any wrapper/API/library, but with characteristics that make it suitable for use in a rendering engine, namely: Renders the video frame data to memory, so it can be picked up and passed to a texture on the GPU easily. Super simple - all that is needed is a way to load, jump and render a frame programatically - ideally it would use the systems codecs and not require an assortment of plugins. Permissive license (LGPL or more free-er) .NET bindings at least; all the better if it is natively managed Can anyone suggest a lightweight, (.NET) library, that can take a video file, and spit out some frames into a byte[]?

  I have a video of a tennis match whose Resolution = 1280 * 720 Codec = H264 Frame rate = 50fps (Copy paste from info given by totem media player) My laptop is not powerful enough to play this video smoothly. How can I reduce the frame-rate of this video so that my laptop can play it? I have observed that my laptop can play videos with 25fps without an issue. I use ubuntu. I wouldn't mind using windows to edit/re-encode this video.

• What format should I convert my iTunes Videos to?

  Recently got Daniusoft Media Converter, and was about to strip the DRM off my iTunes library, then I found I had a huge decision to make. Converting my music seems obvious, to MP3, however the video formats, I'm at a loss on. It has "optimized" formats for all types of video players such as iPhone, Zune, Droid (which I own), and just a huge list! I bought several seasons of House and a few movies, though I don't know which format would be optimal to not lose quality. While I love my Droid, I have no intention on watching full episodes or movies on it, and I have a feeling that would reduce quality. One of the options sections is HD Video, and it has HD MPEG-4 Video (*.mp4). That one seems like it would be the best format to convert to without losing quality, but again, I'm unsure. Has anyone used this software, or have general expertise in video formats to give a recommendation on what file format I should convert my videos to? Format requirements: No loss in quality Portability would be ideal (as in, will play on my Windows and potentially MAC, and streamable to a bigscreen).

  I've been trying to figure out this on my own for weeks, but now I give up. 'Custom thumbnails' feature on YouTube is such a controversial one, it was changed so much... so much that even FAQ on YouTube doesn't fully describe it's features (as I see). I have a YouTube channel for one of my websites. This YouTube channel is main marketing force for my website - it brings all the boys to my yard (I mean, website). So I have to use all the hacky-tricky stuff to increase my visibility on youtube. And damn, those custom thumbnails are giving me hard times... I was able to run panda on my EC2 instance (using their image) and I can upload video from Panda's test pages but now I'm trying to make same thing with my own application in GWT. The question that I have is: How do I get Video id and how do I post my video to the server. What URL do I need to use for that? I tried to read their documentation but have no clue where to start.   In window, i can get the date created of the video from properties(right click). I have a few idea on this but i dont know how to do it. 1. Get the video information directly from video(like in windows), 2. By extracting the video name to get the date created(The video's name is in date format, which is the time it created). And i also using taglib-sharp to get the video duration and resolution, but i cant find any sample code on how to get the video creation date.
