  • Windows 2008 Boot DVD

    I am looking to create a custom boot DVD to run my unattended installs of windows 2008. I would like to have a menu system that lets the tech select what version of the OS they would like to install and version (x86/x64). I know you can run the windows 2008 setup, and exit to command prompt, but I would like there to just be a menu that will kick off whichever script needed. What would be the best way to do this?     When I Try to install SQL Server 2008 R2 on Windows 8 (Enterprise Evaluation), a compatibility warning massage is displayed, Tried Get help online option but it is says No solution found, but setup starts when I select Run the program without getting help. Do I have to install any Service Pack or Update to make it compatible or SQL Server 2008/R2 is not supported on this version of windows? and what are the effects if I run the setup ignoring the warning message?

    I'm a bit new to Technet and just trying to work my way round things. Firstly I want to install Windows Server 2008 R2 as I believe this is the latest edition - however when I look to download it from Technet, it will only allow me to download the Windows Automated Installation Kit. Does this have Windows Server 2008 R2 embedded in WAIK or is there some other extra step to do? Or am I just doing this all wrong :)

    we got some connections timeouts running a stored procedure in a SQL Server 2008 instance. after a while, the DB started to work as usual, and there weren't any additional timeout errors. So I'm trying to get additional info about the error. Does SQL server 2008 have any kind of error log that I can look into? Do exist any auditing/logging features that I can activate to trace the error (if it happens again)?

    Im using a Intel X25-M 80G with the latest firmware. on XP /w using IDE and WIN7 using AHCI I get read speeds up to 250MB/S. But when running it with Server 2008 SP1 or SP2 on AHCI, I get read speeds around 180MB/S. Ive updated drivers for 2008, tested with writecache on/off. Any input would be appreciated. thanks!

    I'm using the EXPORT feature in Hyper-V to move a large Virtual Machine (VM) over a 1GB network from a Windows 2008 to a Windows 2008 R2 box (200GB) and its so intense that I get the following icon on my destination Hyper-V manager: Is this expected? Is there another way to get large file across the network and minimize this intense I/O effect? Anyones else ever seen that Do Not Enter sign? The other VMs are functional but slow, but I'm guessing that is expected.

From my understanding, we need to add the following into the web.config file <system.web> <identity impersonate="true" /> </system.web> Also, we need to ensure that the server Jack11 can ping to the domain Watson.org. What other setting do we need to setup in order for a user of domain Watson.org (e.g. the user Watson\User1 to access the application in the Server IIS? This is because currently, there is a problem as follows: Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed for user 'WATSON\User1'. The error message was displayed when the user User1 wish to access one of the web application in server Jack11 IIS and that web application also do some retrieval of records from the database, which is installed in SQL Server 2008 Enterprise located in the same server Jack11.

I'm under the impression that these licences will entitle us to have 10 concurrent connections to Remote Desktop. At the moment we are only allowed two. Can we have a RD connection per CAL?     Microsoft has a Hyper-V based VM I'm interested in running, however, I don't have access to a Windows Server 2008 machine to try it on, only a Windows 7 Pro x64 machine (Windows 7 does not support Hyper-V). But instead of those routes, I'm wondering: What would happen if I tried to go the "Boot to VHD" route using this Hyper-V VHD? Is it possible that during the boot process, Windows would simply notice that hardware had changed and adjust accordingly, installing the appropriate drivers and continuing on without a hitch?

    the built in command line ftp client in server 2008 does not support passive mode so I've used these commands to allow outbound ftp (it stalls without this) 1) Open port 21 on the firewall netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="FTP (no SSL)" action=allow protocol=TCP dir=in localport=21 2) Activate firewall application filter for FTP (aka Stateful FTP) that will dynamically open ports for data connections netsh advfirewall set global StatefulFtp enable however in server 2008 r2, these commands seem to work, but it does not affect the outbound ftp, it stalls I do not want to use an alt client

    I need a way to attach a VHD at boot in Windows Server 2008 R2. I tried to accomplish this task by creating a diskpart script that attached the vdisk at boot, which would work if it were not for the fact that it triggers UAC when I call on diskpart to mount the image. What is the point of auto mounting a VHD at boot if I have to click Yes to accept the UAC? Is there some other way of mounting VHD images at boot in Windows Server 2008 R2?

  • Intermittent timeout when connecting to Sql Server, what do I look for?

    Sql Server 2008 Standard 64bit on Windows Server 2008 R2 virtual machine hosted on a Hyper-V server. I'm getting intermittent timeouts when connecting to the server. This happens for both windows and Sql Authentication. May timeout every 2 out of 5 tries in different applications. When the connection times out, I can see (in Profiler) that no connection was made. Firewall is holey, server port is static (good ol' 1433). If I ping /t the server I get a steady connection that wavers between 1 and 2 ms. Any ideas what else to try would be appreciated, thanks.

    I'm trying to configure my Windows 2008 servers so that my developers can view their status without needing to log on to the box or be an admin. Unfortunately, the permissions set in Windows 2008 for remote non-admin users don't include the ability to enumerate or otherwise query services. This causes anything that contacts the SCM on the far end to fail (Win32_Service, sc.exe, services.msc etc). How do I set up permissions so that they can at least list the services and see if they are running?

  • MD5CryptoServiceProvider ComputeHash Issues between VS 2003 and VS 2008

    I have a database application that generates a MD5 hash and compares the hash value to a value in our DB (SQL 2K). The original application was written in Visual Studio 2003 and a deployed version has been working for years. Recently, some new machines on the .NET framework 3.5 have been having unrelated issues with our runtime. This has forced us to port our code path from Visual Studio 2003 to Visual Studio 2008. Since that time the hash produced by the code is different than the values in the database. The original call to the function posted in code is: RemoveInvalidPasswordCharactersFromHashedPassword(Text_Scrub(GenerateMD5Hash(strPSW))) I am looking for expert guidance as to whether or not the MD5 methods have changed since VS 2K3 (causing this point of failure), or where other possible problems may be originating from. I realize this may not be the best method to hash, but utimately any changes to the MD5 code would force us to change some 300 values in our DB table and would cost us a lot of time. In addition, I am trying to avoid having to redeploy all of the functioning versions of this application. I am more than happy to post other code including the RemoveInvalidPasswordCharactersFromHashedPassword function, or our Text_Scrub if it is necessary to recieve appropriate feedback.   • Error when creating ASP.NET website in Visual Studio

    I'm trying to learn ASP.NET. I open Visual Studio (this happens in both 2008 and 2010) and creating a new ASP.NET website using .NET 3.5. When I attempt to run the website, a FireFox page opens up and tells me that it can't establish a connection to the server (localhost:####). There's no helpful error message, just "cannot connect." What could be causing this?

    I'm pretty new to C# and Visual Studio. I'm writing a small program that will read a .csv file and then write the records read to a MS SQL database table. I can manually parse the .csv file, but I was wondering if it is possible to somehow "describe" the .csv file to Visual Studio so that I can use it as a data source? I should mention that the first two lines in the .csv file contain header information and the following lines are the actual comma-delimited data.
