  • Finding the file that is on a bad block on a HFS+ volume (debugfs for HFS+)

    I have a drive in our iMac that has bad blocks, as booting from an Ubuntu 11.10 live CD and using ddrescue -f /dev/sda /dev/null finds them. I'd like to get the drive to remap them by writing to the blocks, say using hdparm --write-sector, but I don't want to do this without knowing what's in those blocks and finding the file that owns them, so I can restore the file from another source. I found fileXray but don't feel like spending $79 to map a block to a file and hfsdebug has been taken offline. Are there suggestions on a tool or technique to use? I looked at all the Ubuntu HFS+ packages to see if they could provide this info but nothing jumped out at me. BTW, I used Disk Utility to erase the empty space, but it didn't get any of the bad blocks to be remapped, according to smartctl -A.

  • NTFS Error - file system structure is corrupt and unusable

    My Windows 7 (64) keeps completely locking up, and I have to hold the power button to shit it down. Event logs are showing EventID 55. I realize that this can be a warning sign of an impending disk failure, but my data on this machine is safely backed up and I don't feel like taking the time to replace the drive right now. When I have seen this problem before, I have been able to delete the offending folder with a Linux Live CD. (When CHKDSK /F didn't work). In this case, the folder is from VSS. I assume this is from Crashplan, my online backup provider. What are the ramifications of deleting this folder from Linux? Is it safe to do? "The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy26."

  • Setting Linux UID on NFS volume from EMC NX4

    I have an EMC NX4 from which there are several CIFS shares with corresponding NFS mount points. The CIFS user ids seem fine but when viewed from Linux they are all 327xx numbers and can't be set from the file system. (IE CHOWN doesn't work - permission denied). On our other (older) EMC devices we used an MMC app to set the Linux UID for each user. I don't seem to have such an app on the 'Applications and Tools' CD for this new device. Is there some other method for setting these? Did I setup the system incorrectly?

    I have a Mirrored Dynamic disk on my Windows 2003 Server. How do you monitor the health of the volume? Is there a way to have the server send an email when there is an issue with the volume? Is there a way to have the server run S.M.A.R.T. tests? EDIT: Nothing says WTF like logging into a client server, running DISKPART LIST VOLUME and seeing this.   • unstable / variating sound level (volume) within same song / clip

    Hello, I have a pretty standard Acer desktop (I guess a predecessor of the X5900 model). when playing mp3 / radio / youtube clips, the sound level is changing WITHIN the clip, highly annoying. in the case of an mp3, the same mp3 will play at a constant sound level on my iPod, so clearly an issue with the computer. problem existed under vista, I upgraded to windows 7 and have the same issue. I guess it might be soundcard-related, so updated the drivers, no luck neither. any idea ? thanks

  • Mounting LVM2 volume with XFS filesystem

    Unfortunately I'm not able to access the data on my NAS anymore. I can't figure out why this is the case as I haven't changed anything. So I plugged one of the harddisks in my computer to access the data. What I did: kpartx -a /dev/sdc Now I should be able to access /dev/mapper/vg001-lv001 When trying to mount it I get: sudo mount -t xfs /dev/mapper/vg001-lv001 /home/user/mnt mount: /dev/mapper/vg001-lv001: can't read superblock Now I did a parted -l which gave me Modell: Linux device-mapper (linear) (dm) Festplatte /dev/mapper/vg001-lv001: 498GB Sektorgröße (logisch/physisch): 512B/512B Partitionstabelle: loop Number Begin End Size Filesystem Flags 1 0,00B 498GB 498GB xfs Does anybody have a solution how to recover the data?

  • How do I disable microphone volume auto-adjusting?

    My coworkers started yelling at me today because apparently I started screaming in their ears during a Google hangout. And sure enough, when I go to the Microphone settings dialog, I can see the level being auto-adjusted constantly; sometimes way too high. I don't think this has happened previously; at least nobody ever complained. Can I find out who is doing that auto-adjusting, and more importantly, can I turn it off? I couldn't find any related setting in the recording device settings. I'm using Windows 7 64bit, and (I'm mentioning this because the theory has come up that it may be related) I don't have Skype running.

  • How do I make my "volume up" more powerful in Win7?

    My volume up button raises the volume by 1%. Its also not a button, it's a weird 'touch' thing which is really really terrible. If I want to lower the volume, I have to awkwardly rub it for a while. If it were to decrease by 5% or 10% it would be a lot better. Can this be set somewhere in Windows/Keyboard settings? I got close to a solution with Autohotkey, where I could do this: a::Send {Volume_Up 5} which would send the volume up command five times, however when I assign it to the volume key, it forms an endless loop since the Send command sends Volume_Up and parses it at the same time.     Consider the following scenario: /dev/md0 - 10GB RAID 1 volume built from /dev/sda and /dev/sdb /dev/md1 - 10GB RAID 1 volume built from /dev/sdc and /dev/sdd /dev/vg0 - volume group containing md0 and md1 /dev/vg0/lv0 - 15GB logical volume The raid devices are created with mdadm; the logical volumes by LVM. What happens to lv0 if md0 fails entirely? That is, if both sda and sdb disintegrate so that the md0 device can not start. Is the portion of the data that resided on md1 still accessible, or is the entire LV gone? Would the answer change if lv0 were created as a striped volume vs non-striped?

    In my ~ dir, I have some symlinks that point to "/Volumes/Macintosh HD 2/..." and I want to find them all recursively. A look at the man page for 'find' says the '-lname' argument will search the symbolic link contents. It appears to work, but not recursively: $ pwd /Users/myusername $ sudo find . -lname '/Volumes*' $ cd Documents/ $ sudo find . -lname '/Volumes*' ./Documents on Win7 ./work.rtf What's going on? How can I make this work recursively? -- The 'find' program is supposed to always work recursively.   • Wipe free space on LVM-LUKS (dm-crypt) Volume

    My three partitions for my system are created with LVM on a LUKS partition (dm-crypt). These are /home, / and swap. The filesystem is ext4. They are encrypted, because they are on my laptop and I don't want that some laptop thieves get my data. But I often share my laptop with other people so they can access my encrypted partitions. I don't want that these people can recover my cache and all the data I deleted. So I'm now trying to wipe all my free space on /home to prevent against recovering with tools like photorec. (one overwrite should do, the need of multiple overwriting is just a rumor) But still I haven't found any solution to wipe this free space successfully. I tried dd if=/dev/zero of=/home/fillitup bs=512 count=[count of free sectiors] so my partition was complete full of data. df /dev/mapper/home said 100% is used and there are 0 sectors available. But I could still recover gigs of data with photorec, although I selected to recover just form the free space. photorec displays: /dev/mapper/home - 340 GB / 317 GiB (RO) , but df displays that the size of /home is just 313G, why are there these differences and what did the 340GB means? It looks like there is a place on my /dev/mapper/home partition, that I can't access to overwrite, but I can access it to recover. I also checked for corrupted sectors, but there aren't any. Maybe this is the space between my existing files? Did anyone knows why I can't wipe my free space with dd, and how I can find the location of the loads of recoverable files, to securely delete them?

  • Windows 7 Extend C Volume to Unallocated Space

    a while back I installed Ubuntu and then later uninstalled it by I think deleting the partitions and recovering the windows 7 boot loader. I am not that experienced with partitioning yet. As you can see here there are two partitions that are now unallocated. The 9gb one is a recovery or something that came with the computer. How can I extend my C partition to use both of those? I do not want to have that much storage just wasted sitting there.   • Hybrid HDD/SSD Volume Windows

    Is it possible to create a hybrid drive-like experience using an ssd and a hdd? In theory, frequently used files would be stored on the faster ssd, and larger/less used would be moved to the hdd. I know you can create shared volumes in windows, but the speed differences would create some issues I would assume, and it doesn't have drive preference for what gets stored on what drive. Any programs/info/advice would be great! Thanks! (PS. I saw this question, but it was asked three years ago and some solutions have probably changed)
