  • What IPC method should I use between Firefox extension and C# code running on the same machine?

    I have a question about how to structure communication between a (new) Firefox extension and existing C# code. The firefox extension will use configuration data and will produce other data, so needs to get the config data from somewhere and save it's output somewhere. The data is produced/consumed by existing C# code, so I need to decide how the extension should interact with the C# code. Some pertinent factors: It's only running on windows, in a relatively controlled corporate environment. I have a windows service running on the machine, built in C#. Storing the data in a local datastore (like sqlite) would be useful for other reasons. The volume of data is low, e.g. 10kb of uncompressed xml every few minutes, and isn't very 'chatty'. The data exchange can be asynchronous for the most part if not completely. As with all projects, I have limited resources so want an option that's relatively easy. It doesn't have to be ultra-high performance, but shouldn't add significant overhead. I'm planning on building the extension in javascript (although could be convinced otherwise if really necessary) Some options I'm considering: use an XPCOM to .NET/COM bridge use a sqlite db: the extension would read from and save to it. The c# code would run in the service, populating the db and then processing data created by the service. use TCP sockets to communicate between the extension and the service. Let the service manage a local data store. My problem with (1) is I think this will be tricky and not so easy. But I could be completely wrong? The main problem I see with (2) is the locking of sqlite: only a single process can write data at a time so there'd be some blocking. However, it would be nice generally to have a local datastore so this is an attractive option if the performance impact isn't too great. I don't know whether (3) would be particularly easy or hard ... or what approach to take on the protocol: something custom or http. Any comments on these ideas or other suggestions?     I have a massive MySQL database (around 10 GB), and I need to copy it to a different server (slicehost). I don't want to do a DB dump and reimport b/c I think that would take forever. Is it possible to just move the raw SQL files from one machine to the next, setup an identical mysql server, and flip the switch?

    Does anyone knows if removing the field names from an INSERT query results in some performance improvements? I mean is this: INSERT INTO table1 VALUES (value1, value2, ...) faster for DB to be accomplished rather than doing this: INSERT INTO table1 (field1, field2, ...) VALUES (value1, value2, ...) ? I know it might be probably a meaningless performance difference, but just to know.

  • When using Oracle load balancing and ADO.NET, how do you know which host the command executed on?

    It's possible to use Microsoft's OracleClient assembly to connect to an Oracle database, and using Oracle's connection string format, set it up to use load balancing, provided your Oracle environment supports it. The question I have is how do you know after the fact, which db host the command actually executed against? Is there a way to retrieve the machine name from the load balanced set of machines?

  • Checking for nulls in ASP.NET MVC Controllers

    Another opinion question: What is the proper (in your opinion) to check for nulls in an MVC controller. For instance, if you have an edit controller that fetches a record from the db based on an id, what do you do if that record is not found? I found this article, but I'm not sure I like that method. Do you just check for it with an if statement and redirect to a 404 page? What solution do you use?

So the way it works, a role (aka user) can be granted (rule: 1) access to a controller, a role can inherit (rule: 3) access from another role or a role and be denied (rule: 2) access to a controller. (A user is a resource and a controller is a resource) Access to actions are granted / denied using the extras column. This all works, its not a problem with setting up the ACL within zend. What I am now trying to do is show the relationships; to do that I need to find the lowest level a role is granted access to a controller stopping if it has explicitly been removed. I plan on listing the roles. When I click a role, I want it to show all the controllers that role has access to. Then clicking on a controller shows the actions the role is allowed to do. So in the example above, a guest is allowed to view the index action of the index controller along with the login action. A member inherits the same access, but is then denied access to the login action and register action. A moderator inherits the rules of a member. So if I were to select the role moderator. I want to see the controller index listed. If I click on the controller, it should show the allowed actions as being action: index. (which was originally granted to the guest, but hasn't since been dissallowed) Is there any examples to doing this. I am obviously working with the Zend MVC (PHP) and MySQL. Even just a persudo code example would be a helpful starting point - this is one of the last parts of the jigsaw I am putting together. P.S. Obviously I have the ACL object - is it going to be easier to interigate that or is it better to do it my self via PHP/MySQL? The aim will be, show what a role can access which will then allow me to add or edit a role, controller and action in a GUI style (that is somewhat the easy bit) - currently I am updating the DB manually as I have been building the site.

    Hello , I have a php application that saves the pictures on the server and also stores the picture names in the database . The issue that I have is that the picture names include the path/folder where it was saved from (e.g 1220368812/chpk2198933_large-2.jpg) so I need a str_replace pattern to remove "1220368812/" and have the picture name correct stored in the db . Also I would appreciate if you will send me a good link that explains how exactly the str_replace patterns work or at least how the pattern that you use work .

  • invalid postback event instead of dropdown to datagrid

    I faced with funny situation. I created a page which is having some value, I set these value and control my post back event also. The problem is happening when I change a component index(ex reselect a combobox which is not inside my datagrid) then I dont know why without my page call the Page_Load it goes to create a new row in grid function and all of my parameter are null! I am just receiving null exception. So in other word I try to explain the situation: when I load my page I am initializing some parameter. then everything is working fine. in my page when I change selected item of my combo box, page suppose to go and run function related to that combo box, and call page_load, but it is not going there and it goes to rowcreated function. I am trying to illustrate part of my page.
