• Oracle SPARC SuperCluster and US DoD Security guidelines

  I've worked in the past to help our government customers understand how best to secure Solaris.  For my customer base that means complying with Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) from the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA).  I recently worked with a team to apply both the Solaris and Oracle 11gR2 database STIGs to a SPARC SuperCluster.  The results have been published in an Oracle White paper. The SPARC SuperCluster is a highly available, high performance platform that incorporates: SPARC T4-4 servers Exadata Storage Servers and software ZFS Storage appliance InfiniBand interconnect Flash Cache  Oracle Solaris 11 Oracle VM for SPARC Oracle Database 11gR2 It is targeted towards large, mission critical database, middleware and general purpose workloads.  Using the Oracle Solution Center we configured a SSC applied DoD security guidance and confirmed functionality and performance of the system.  The white paper reviews our findings and includes a number of security recommendations.  In addition, customers can contact me for the itemized spreadsheets with our detailed STIG reports. Some notes: There is no DISA STIG  documentation for Solaris 11.  Oracle is working to help DISA create one using their new process. As a result, our report follows the Solaris 10 STIG document and applies it to Solaris 11 where applicable. In my conversations over the years with DISA Field Security Office they have repeatedly told me, "The absence of a DISA written STIG should not prevent a product from being used.  Customer may apply vendor or industry security recommendations to receive accreditation." • Ubuntu installation does not recognize drive partitioning

  I have a 1TB drive and installed Windows 7 on a 128GB partition. When I now try to install Ubuntu 11.04 it does not recognize the Windows partition but offers the complete 1TB drive to install Ubuntu on instead. It displays: However, in the Ubuntu Disk Utility the Windows partitions are recognized. What do I need to do in order for Ubuntu to recognize the Windows 7 partition and install Ubuntu as a dual boot? • early audio offset in Audacity and VLC, but not Banshee

  I'm editing audio files with speech in Audacity, marking particular types of speech. I just noticed that files edited in Windows have different intervals marked than files edited in Ubuntu. After testing and confirming this error, it seems that the audio playback in Ubuntu clips the sound too early from the end (early offset), which causes the person doing the editing to mark the interval wrongly. Interestingly, the error appears in Audacity and VLC (which I sometimes use for playback), but NOT Banshee. Since both Audacity and VLC have this problem, I assume it is not application-specific. I don't know why Banshee handles this without problem though... Are there any ALSA or Pulseaudio settings that are likely to cause this problem (I know very little about either)? The task itself does not appear to consume large amounts of resources, but I am on an old laptop, so here are my specs: Ubuntu 11.10. Dell XPS m1210 1.6 GHz Intel Core, 2 x 512 Mb 667 MHz RAM, Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01). • Frequent Disconnects with an Intel 3945ABG Wireless Card

  I'm brand new to Ubuntu, and I really love it so far, but one issue I have encountered is that my WLAN is disconnecting about every 5-10 minutes. Often times the connection is repaired automatically, but sometimes the network manager will repeatedly reject my encryption key (which of course is correct). Occasionally after a disconnect, the wireless network fails to show up at all. The only way I can solve this seems to be by completely restarting Ubuntu or connecting with a USB wireless adapter. I am using WPA/WPA2 encryption, which I've read can cause problems with network-manager, but I experience the exact same issues with WICD. I should probably note that I've not experienced any of these issues using Windows 7 on my other partition. I have a hunch that there may be a better driver out there for my card, but I have no idea how to go about searching for it or installing it. • How do you manage the testing of your Android software on physical devices?

  I'm in charge of managing mobile application development at my company, and I am currently building a mobile device "library" for testing. Essentially, we want to have a representative device in-house for each of the OSes we are developing for, currently iOS (iPhone-only), Blackberry, and Android. Simulators only go so far, but I'm placing into the process a step to test software on the devices themselves. The problem we're finding is with Android. I don't think any of us here ever really understood just how fragmented the whole platform is until we started looking at devices to acquire. We are going to wait until v2.3 of Android is released, but which products to choose? Do we go by the most popular by market share? Do we get a small range of products by specs from least to most powerful overall? We're trying to avoid having to manage a dozen different devices to test each app, if not because of cost if only for the repeated time sink. How do you manage the testing of your Android software on physical devices?

• Xna Equivalent of Viewport.Unproject in a draw call as a matrix transformation

  I am making a 2D sidescroller and I would like to draw my sprite to world space instead of client space so I do not have to lock it to the center of the screen and when the camera stops the sprite will walk off screen instead of being stuck at the center. In order to do this I wanted to make a transformation matrix that goes in my draw call. I was going to try putting my returns from the viewport.unproject method I have into a scale matrix such as: blah = Matrix.CreateScale(unproject.X,unproject.Y,0); however, that doesn't seem to work correctly. • Styles of games that work at low-resolution

  I'm taking a class on compilers, and the goal is to write a compiler for Meggy Jr devices (Arduino). The goal is just to make a simple compilers with loops and variables and stuff. Obviously, that's lame, so the "real goal" is to make an impressive game on the device. The problem is that it only has 64 pixels to work with (technically 72, but the top 8 are single-color and not part of the main display, so they're really only useful for displaying things like money). My problem is thinking of something to do on a device that small. It doesn't really matter if it's original, but it can't be something that's already available. My first idea was "snake", but that comes with the SDK. Same with a side-scrolling shooter. Remaining ideas include a tower defense game (hard to write, hard to control), an RPG (same), tetris (lame).. The problem is that all of the games I like require a high-resolution screen because they have a lot of text. Even a really simple game like nethack would be hard because each creature would be a single color. tl;dr What styles of games require a. No text; and b. Few enough objects that representing them each with a single color is acceptable? EDIT: To clarify, the display is 8x8 for a total of 64 pixels, not 64x64.

• mdadm: breaks boot due to "is not ready yet or not present" error

  This is so damn frustrating :-| I've spent like 20 hours on this nice error, and seems like dozens of people over Internet too, and no clear solution yet. I have non-system RAID-5 of 5 disks, and it's fine. But during boot up it says that "/dev/md0 is not ready yet or not present" and asks to press 'S'. Very nice for Ubuntu Server - I have to bring monitor and keyboard to go next. After this system boots and it's all fine. md0 device works, /proc/mdstat is fine. When I do mount -a - it mounts this array without errors and works fine. As a dumb and shameful workaround I added noauto in /etc/fstab, and did mounting in /etc/rc.local - it works fine then. • I can't install Ubuntu on my Dell Inspiron 15R at all

  I'm attempting to install Ubuntu 12.04LTS, 64 bit onto a Dell Inspiron 15R laptop. I've shrunk down one of the windows partitions and even used gparted to format the vacant space as ext4. However, the install disk simply does not present any options when it comes to the partitioning step. What I get is a non-responsive blank table As well as the above, I've changed the BIOS settings so that USB emulation is disabled (as per Can't install on Dell Inspiron 15R), and changed the SATA Operation setting to all three possible options. • Styles of games that work at low-resolution

  I'm taking a class on compilers, and the goal is to write a compiler for Meggy Jr devices (Arduino). The goal is just to make a simple compilers with loops and variables and stuff. Obviously, that's lame, so the "real goal" is to make an impressive game on the device. The problem is that it only has 64 pixels to work with (technically 72, but the top 8 are single-color and not part of the main display, so they're really only useful for displaying things like money). My problem is thinking of something to do on a device that small. It doesn't really matter if it's original, but it can't be something that's already available. My first idea was "snake", but that comes with the SDK. Same with a side-scrolling shooter. Remaining ideas include a tower defense game (hard to write, hard to control), an RPG (same), tetris (lame).. The problem is that all of the games I like require a high-resolution screen because they have a lot of text. Even a really simple game like nethack would be hard because each creature would be a single color. tl;dr What styles of games require a. No text; and b. Few enough objects that representing them each with a single color is acceptable?

  Hi i have a problem trying to install ubuntu. The machine is a CX Ultrabook model CX.21903W Intel I5 with 500GB hard disk, 8 GB ram and 32 GB SSD. From Installing Ubuntu on a Pre-Installed Windows 8 (64-bit) System (UEFI Supported), and according to the steps guide: 1 - We create a partition from Win8 (70 GB) from the own win8 program. 2 - Confirm-SecureBootUEFI=True. 3 - From Win8, shift + Restart and from special menu we selected the UEFI Firmware Setting. 4 - From BIOS Option: ------Option 1) Disable Secure Boot. ------Option 2) Disable UEFI (Not Available) from Option 1: Three ways is available. With Secure Boot enable - We can't even boot ubuntu. A red windows saying Soft unproper signed. With Secure Boot disable - and this config in boot device order: ----1: UEFI: USB ----2: Windows Boot Manger ----3: Others and CSM (Compatibility Support Module): enable - GRUB appears and selecting try Ubuntu then a black windows appears and nothing happens. The same result if install ubuntu is selected. With Secure Boot disable - and this config in boot device order: ----1: USB (No UEFI) ----2: Windows Boot Manger ----3: Others and CSM (Compatibility Support Module): enable - GRUB appears and selecting try Ubuntu, - Ubuntu boots and we can install it even. 5 - Rebooting and just changing the boot order as ----1: Ubuntu [] ----2: Windows Boot Manger ----3: Others then nothings happens. 6 - Booting from LiveUSB again and, as per instructed, making Boot-Repair (A warning windows: Ubuntu is working in legacy mode.). 7 - Saving changes and rebooting, Grub works but selecting Ubuntu, a black windows appears and nothing happens. Selecting Win8, Win8 boots and works. Untill now we can't make the ubuntu installation. Any suggestion will be welcomed. kind regards and thanks in advance.

  I have googled and found out Updates don't install because of "untrusted packages". It didn't fixed the error. So, how do I fix my GUI update? Updated sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade < working The following packages will be upgraded: ambiance-colors radiance-colors 2 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 5,029 kB of archives. After this operation, 7,614 kB of additional disk space will be used. Working but when I update from GUI or try to install software from Ubuntu Software Center I got same error as shown in above picture. For every software I have to install it from command line because I got same error when install software from Ubuntu Software Center.

• 2D/Isometric map algorithm

  First of all, I don't have much experience on game development but I do have experience on development. I do know how to make a map, but I don't know if my solution is a normal or a hacky solution. I don't want to waste my time coding things, and realise they're utterly crap and lose my motivation. Let's imagine the following map. (2D - top view - A square) X: 0 to 500 Y: 0 to 500 My character currently stands at X:250,Y:400, somewhere near center of 100px above bottom and I can control him with my keyboard buttons. LEFT button does X--, UP button does Y-- etc. This one is kid's play. I'm asking this because I know there are some engines that automate this task. For example, games like Diablo 3 uses an engine. You can pretty much drag drop a rock to map, and it is automatically being placed here - making player unable to pass through/detect the collision. But what the engine exactly does in the background? Generates a map like mine, places a rock at the center, and checks it like: unmovableObjects = array('50,50'); //we placed a rock at 50,50 location if(Map.hasUnmovableObject(CurrentPlayerX, CurrentPlayerY)) { //unable to move } else { //able to move } My question is: Is this how 2D/Isometric maps are being generated or there is a different and more complex logic behind them?
