• What happens to C# 4 optional parameters when compiling against 3.5?

  Here’s a method declaration that uses optional parameters: public Path Copy( Path destination, bool overwrite = false, bool recursive = false) Something you may not know is that Visual Studio 2010 will let you compile this against .NET 3.5, with no error or warning. You may be wondering (as I was) how it does that. Well, it takes the easy and rather obvious way of not trying to be too smart and just ignores the optional parameters. So if you’re compiling against 3.5 from Visual Studio 2010, the above code is equivalent to: public Path Copy( Path destination, bool overwrite, bool recursive) The parameters are not optional (no such thing in C# 3), and no overload gets magically created for you. If you’re building a library that is going to have both 3.5 and 4.0 versions, and you want 3.5 users to have reasonable overloads of your methods, you’ll have to provide those yourself, which means that providing a version with optional parameters for the benefit of 4.0 users is not going to provide that much value, except for the ability to provide named parameters out of order. • LAMP Stack Versioning -- Is there a website or version tracker source to help suggest the right versions of each part of a platform stack?

  Taken singly, it's easy to research versions and compatibility. Version information is readily available on each single part of a platform stack, such as MySQL. You can find out the latest version, stable version, and sometimes even the percentage of people adopting it by version (personally, I like seeing numbers on adoption rates). However, when trying to find the best possible mix of versions, I have a harder time. For example, "if you're using MySQL 5.5, you'll need PHP version XX or higher." It gets even more difficult to mitigate when you throw higher level platforms into the mix such as Drupal, Joomla, etc. I do consider "wizard" like installers to be beneficial, such as the Bitnami installers. However, I always wonder if those solutions cater more to the least common denominator -- be all to many -- and as such, I think I'd be better to install things on my own. Such solutions do seem kind of slow to adopt new versions, slower than necessary, I suspect. Is there a website or tool that consolidates versioning data in order to help a webmaster choose which versions to deploy or which upgrades to install, in consideration of all the other parts of the stack?

• Is there a way to track data structure dependencies from the database, through the tiers, all the way out to a web page?

  When we design applications, we generally end up with the same tiered sets of data structures: A persistent data structure that is described using DDL and implemented as RDBMS tables and columns. A set of domain objects that consist primarily of data structures, usually combined with business-rule level logic, that are implemented in a programming language such as Java. A set of service layer interfaces that directly support use case implementations (which use the domain data structures as parameters), implemented as EJBs or something equivalent in another programming language. UI screens that allow users to C reate, R etrieve, U pdate, and (maybe) D elete all manner of data structures and graphs of data structures, with numerous screens and with multiple UI widgets, all structured to support the same data structures. But if you want to change the data structures in any of these tiers, it always seems extremely difficult to assess the impact(s) the change will have across the application. UML can help, but tracing through diagram after diagram is not a real solution to this problem. The best I have ever seen was a homespun data tracking spreadsheet document that listed all of the data structures and walked the relationships from tier-to-tier. Is there a tool or accepted approach that makes it easy to identify a data structure in any tier and easily obtain a list of all dependent: database table and column data structures domain object data structures service layer interface methods and parameter data structures screen & UI component data structures

• Optimize Images Using the ASP.NET Sprite and Image Optimization Framework

  The HTML markup of a web page includes the page's textual content, semantic and styling information, and, typically, several references to external resources. External resources are content that is part of web page, but are separate from the web page's markup - things like images, style sheets, script files, Flash videos, and so on. When a browser requests a web page it starts by downloading its HTML. Next, it scans the downloaded HTML for external resources and starts downloading those. A page with many external resources usually takes longer to completely load than a page with fewer external resources because there is an overhead associated with downloading each external resource. For starters, each external resource requires the browser to make an HTTP request to retrieve the resource. What's more, browsers have a limit as to how many HTTP requests they will make in parallel. For these reasons, a common technique for improving a page's load time is to consolidate external resources in a way to reduce the number of HTTP requests that must be made by the browser to load the page in its entirety. This article examines the free and open-source ASP.NET Sprite and Image Optimization Framework, which is a project developed by Microsoft for improving a web page's load time by consolidating images into a sprite or by using inline, base-64 encoded images. • Page debugging got easier in UCM 11g

  UCM is famous for it's extra parameters you can add to the URL to do different things. You can add &IsJava=1 to get all of the local data and result set information that comes back from the idc_service. You can add &IsSoap=1 and get back a SOAP message with that information. Or &IsJson=1 will send it in JSON format. There are ones that change the display like &coreContentOnly=1 which will hide the footer and navigation on the page. In 10g, you could add &ScriptDebugTrace=1 and it would display the list of resources that were called through includes or eval functions at the bottom of the page. And it would list them in nested order so you could see the order in which they were called and which components overrode each other. But in 11g, that parameter flag no longer works. Instead, you get a much more powerful one called &IsPageDebug=1. When you add that to a page, you get a small gray tab at the bottom right-hand part of the browser window. When you click it, it will expand and let you choose several pieces of information to display. You can select 'idocscript trace' and display the nested includes you used to get with ScriptDebugTrace. You can select 'initial binder' and see the local data and result sets coming back from the service, just as you would with IsJava. But in this display, it formats the results in easy to read tables (instead of raw HDA format). Then you can get the final binder which would contain all of the local data and result sets after executing all of the includes for the display of the page (and not just from the Service call). And then a 'javascript log' for reporting on the javascript functions and times being executed on the page. Together, these new data displays make page debugging much easier in 11g. *Note: This post also applies to Universal Records Management (URM).

It takes a bit of navigating to get there, so bear with me: Tools Database SQL Formatter Oracle Formatting Click ‘Edit’ on the profile Other Case change: ‘Keywords Uppercase’ It’s easy to find once you know where to look? You can tell it to leave the case alone, upper everything, upper only the keywords, lower everything. Accessing the Formatter Options We allow separate formatting options for different RDBMS. You need to make sure you’re accessing the ‘Oracle Formatting’ page in the preferences. You can then choose to edit the default options OR you can do what I have done – save the defaults as a new set of options. I’ve called my profile ‘JeffCustom.’ I can now switch back and forth now through different sets of formatting options. You need to hit the ‘Edit’ button to get to the formatting options editor. • Setting alias in Windows PowerShell

  In PowerShell, I type: PS C: sal cdp "cd 'C:\Users\ec\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects'" I get no error from this, and PS C: gal cdp shows definition as: cd 'C:\Users\ec\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects' But, when I try to use cdp, I get this: Cannot resolve alias 'cdp' because it refers to term 'cd 'C:\Users\ec\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects'', which is not recognized as a cmdlet, function, operable program, or script file. Verify the term and try again. At line:1 char:4 + cdp <<<<  + CatergoryInfo   : ObjectNotFound (dsp:String) [], CommandNotFoundException  + FullyQualifiedErrorId   : AliasNotResolvedException I am guessing that this is trivially easy. So I apologize in advance if that is the case. I have googled and googled and have also read through Windows PowerShell Cookbook.

It was easy to configure to start-up with the system and make VPN available on the other side but now it fails to connect at the step shown below: The remote machine is running Windows Server 2008 R2. • Stack overflow in xp cmd console

  I am using an older program whose source code I cannot see. I am using the cmd.exe console in windows xp. The program ran with no problems on an xp machine last year, while a stack overflow code 2000 error was observed on a different xp machine (easy fix - use the machine that works). I tried running the program on the previously working machine lately, and now am getting the same error. No changes to the os were made and I did not change the service pack version. Any ideas on how to get around this stack overflow error so I can use the program? Dosbox will at least open the program, however it does not run to completion. Thanks!

• Zantaz's EAS exchange archive product doesn't integrate with Outlook in Windows 7

  I work at a place that uses Exchange with Outlook for mail, and they also use a product from Zantaz called "EAS" which does server-side archiving of old messages. One of the artifacts of this archival is that email attachments are missing from the archived messages when viewed in Outlook. EAS has a client tool that plugs into Outlook that enables easy retrieval of those archived messages and their attachments, but it doesn't seem to work when installed on Windows 7. I have no direct evidence of this, other than that it simply doesn't work on my Windows 7 machine, and some of our network support staff seem to corroborate this. The symptom is that Outlook seems to know nothing of the existence of this EAS app. The EAS app also has a system tray icon which is there and offers some minimal functionality, but the real goodness is the Outlook integration, which I sorely miss. So, my question is this: does anyone here know whether it's possible to coerce this EAS product into working correctly in Windows 7?

• Windows 8 Resource Hacking encrypted UIFILE's

  In Windows 7 it was quite easy to modify resource files such as DLLs to make changes to the Windows interface. This was done by editing the UIFILE's using a program like Resource Hacker. However, now in Windows 8 it seems like some of the UIFILE's are encrypted and are no longer in plain text form and editable in Resource Hacker like they were before. Here's an example screenshot of what they look like now: I was hoping someone might be able to provide some insight into how I can decode this into the UIFILE XML and also compile it back into the DLL.

• Practical mysql schema advice for eCommerce store - Products & Attributes

  I am currently planning my first eCommerce application (mySQL & Laravel Framework). I have various products, which all have different attributes. Describing products very simply, Some will have a manufacturer, some will not, some will have a diameter, others will have a width, height, depth and others will have a volume. Option 1: Create a master products table, and separate tables for specific product types (polymorphic relations). That way, I will not have any unnecessary null fields in the products table. Option 2: Create a products table, with all possible fields despite the fact that there will be a lot of null rows Option 3: Normalise so that each attribute type has it's own table. Option 4: Create an attributes table, as well as an attribute_values table with the value being varchar regardless of the actual data-type. The products table would have a many:many relationship with the attributes table. Option 5: Common attributes to all or most products put in the products table, and specific attributes to a particular category of product attached to the categories table. My thoughts are that I would like to be able to allow easy product filtering by these attributes and sorting. I would also want the frontend to be fast, less concern over the performance of the inserting and updating of product records. Im a bit overwhelmed with the vast implementation options, and cannot find a suitable answer in terms of the best method of approach. Could somebody point me in the right direction? As can be seen, in the sidebar, you can select an attribute the glasses to filter them. e.g. male / female or plastic / metal / titanium etc... • Windows Embedded CE DiskPrep PowerToy

  Kurt Kennett from Microsoft has offered up a handy new tool. This tool is useful for creating a boot disk for x86 Windows CE systems that use the BIOSLoader. This is especially useful for creating disks with formats other than FAT16, which are fairly easy to create. I am letting you know about this new tool, but I have to be honest in telling you that I haven’t used it myself because it is for Windows Vista and Windows 7 – which I don’t have available right now. But you can bet that I will be setting up a virtual machine to give it a try. Here is what Kurt has to say about the tool: Download the DiskPrep Tool  DiskPrep can prepare any hard disk that can be attached to your development PC so that it can boot your X86-based Windows CE OS Design. USB disks (including disk "keys"), Compact Flash Cards, and SD cards all work if your system bios can boot from that type of media. FAT16, FAT32, and exFAT all supported. DOS is not used - the program prepares the bios loader on the disk and only uses that. If you use Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can use VHD files for VirtualPC. • Running a reverse proxy in front of Splunk 4.x

  So, I have previously installed Splunk 3.x behind a reverse proxy and downloaded the latest version (4.0.6 at time of typing) expecting it to be as easy to use as before. Sadly this was not the case. There appears to be some elements which are not being translated correctly through the reverse proxy, causing Splunk to fail. I have used the following configuration in Apache2 to no avail: ServerName monitoringbox.com DocumentRoot /path/to/nowhere ProxyRequests off ProxyPass /splunk http://127.0.0.1:8000/splunk ProxyPassReverse /splunk http://127.0.0.1:8000/splunk Order allow,deny Allow from all Has anyone else had more luck than me in setting up Splunk 4.x behind a reverse proxy?

• Creating a development environment from a shared hosting production environment (LAMP)

  The production server is shared, I don't have access to php.ini and httpd.conf and most PHP settings cannot be set or overrided using ini_set PHP function. So I would like to create a local development environment having configurations as close as it can be to those of the production environment (LAMP). I don't have shell access to the server but using exec PHP function to run some simple commands is possible. I am using Windows XP Pro and I am going to install on VMWare a linux distribution that is more or less the same as the production server. However, installing apache, mysql and php, and then configuring them like those on the production server is not a easy task. It would be great if there exists any tools that are useful in this situation, tools that can analyze/ inspect the production server and then produce something that can help replicating the environment would be useful. If not, what should I be aware of when I try to manually replicate the production environment?

• Bad performance issue on dedicated server

  I just subscribed to a dedicated server offer, and encounter some bad PHP execution performances. Actually, the time execution may be 2 times bigger than it is on my old mutualized server! I'm definitely not an expert in server management, so I'm wondering what I missed. • Error installing php extension OAuth via pecl

  I'm trying to install the php extension OAuth in my local environment. php.net suggests it's super easy. You just run pecl install oauth. I tried this, and here is the output in terminal: downloading oauth-1.0.0.tgz ... • ODI 11g – Scripting Repository Creation

  Here’s a quick post on how to create both master and work repositories in one simple dialog, its using the groovy capabilities in ODI 11g and the groovy swing builder components. So if you want more/less take the groovy script and change, its easy stuff. The groovy script odi_create_repos.groovy is here, just open it in ODI before connecting and you will be able to create both master and work repositories with ease – or check the groovy out and script your own automation – you can construct the master, work and runtime repositories, so if you are embedding ODI as your DI engine this may be very useful. When you click ‘Create Repository’ you will see the following in the log as the master repository starts to be created; ====================================================== Repository Creation Started.... ====================================================== Master Repository Creation Started.... Then the completion message followed by the work repository creation and final completion message. Master Repository Creation Completed. Work Repository Creation Started. Work Repository Creation Completed. ====================================================== Repository Creation Completed Successfully ====================================================== Script exited. If any error is hit, the script just exits and prints any error to the log.
