• #mvvmlight V4 for Windows 8 RP is available

- by Laurent Bugnion
I took a moment out of a very busy weekend to publish an update to MVVM Light for Windows 8 Release Preview. You can download the DLLs from the Codeplex site. Or, if you use Nuget, you can update the MVVM Light package, which will install the newest DLLs. For more information about Nuget, visit Nuget.org as well as the MVVM Light Nuget page. Note: I also took the occasion to fix an issue where the DLLs for the .NET 4 framework were not signed. The DLLs contained in this package are properly signed. As usual, feedback is very welcomed! Happy coding Laurent Laurent Bugnion (GalaSoft) Subscribe | Twitter | Facebook | Flickr | LinkedIn

• Silverlight Html Placeholder now support OOB mode

With the official Silverlight 4 release this week, one of the things we introduced in the Telerik Silverlight controls is the ability to use the Html Placeholder control in OOB in the same way you do when the control is hosted in the browser. The good news is that you don't need to do anything in order to enable this feature. It comes out of the box and if you have an app that is using the HtmlPlaceholder you just need to install it in OOB mode to see the same html that you are seeing when the application is hosted in the browser. When in OOB mode we are using internally the Microsoft WebBrowser control to render the Html - that's why this feature is SL4 specific and is not available in the SL3 binaries (which we still officially support). Go play with it and if you have any questions ...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • New success stories for Oracle IRM and blog translations

- by Simon Thorpe
While we have been busy with the release of Oracle IRM 11g, we've had some customers create a few more success stories for us. These have now been added to our success stories page on this blog, quick links to them are below. Also the announcement has generated a lot of interest globally within Oracle and as such our friends in Latin America have been asking for some translated pages on the blog. So the first of these are now available in Brazilian Portuguese for both the Oracle IRM overview and the simple demonstration online where anyone can self register and experience Oracle IRM protected content. If you work for Oracle sales and would like to translate any of the information on this blog please contact us.

• VS 2010 Debugger Improvements (BreakPoints, DataTips, Import/Export)

This is the twenty-first in a series of blog posts Im doing on the VS 2010 and .NET 4 release. Todays blog post covers a few of the nice usability improvements coming with the VS 2010 debugger. The VS 2010 debugger has a ton of great new capabilities. Features like Intellitrace (aka historical debugging), the new parallel/multithreaded debugging capabilities, and dump debuging support typically get a ton of (well deserved) buzz and attention when people talk about the debugging...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Oracle Magazine - OWB 11gR2 and Heterogeneous Databases

- by David Allan
There's a nice article titled 'Oracle Warehouse Builder 11g Release 2 and Heterogeneous Databases' from Oracle ACE director and cofounder of Rittman Mead Consulting, Mark Rittman in the May/June 2010 Oracle Magazine that covers the heterogeneous database support in OWB 11gR2: http://www.oracle.com/technology/oramag/oracle/10-may/o30bi.html Big thanks to Mark for this write up. There is an Oracle white paper on the support here and for examples of this extensibility you can go to the OWB blog archive where there are quite a few posts. I would recommend the following interesting posts out of the archive architecture overview, bulk file loading, MySQL open connectivity and MySQL bulk extract as interesting posts amongst others.

• Come meet our Interns in Dublin

- by klaudia.drulis
Oracle Worldwide Product Translation Group (WPTG) provides solutions for all Oracle product and Content translation requirements. WPTG is a global organisation with its headquarters in Ireland and employees in Oracle offices worldwide. WPTG offer expertise in fields such as process engineering, tools development, linguistic quality, terminology, global product release, financial and vendor management. WPTG provides translation solution for over 40 languages including Asia Pacific, European, American and Middle Eastern languages. WPTG first introduced an intern program over 10 years ago and it has become a key component of our teams structure. The majority of Interns are sourced from a Computer Science related course, these Interns joining the engineering team. Others are sourced from Business courses and work within the Business / Project management area. The intern program allows us to maintain ties with current course curriculum and brings fresh energy and perspective into our Organisation. Four of the full time staff working in Dublin today joined us originally as Interns and subsequently were offered permanent positions. Come Meet some of our 2010 Interns, Come and see what Darragh, Anthony, Caoimhe, James and Artemij thought about working within the WPTG at Oracle: Darragh “Oracle has been a fun, challenging work placement for me. From day one I was treated as a full member of staff, this was both comforting and a little bit scary. The responsibilities stack up but I found I was able to keep on top of everything and even make improvements to how we handle a few things thanks to a great team and a very supportive manager. There’s a very positive atmosphere in work that’s really conducive to getting a lot of work done. Ideas seem to be the central hub in my line of business so all of my ideas and innovations were greeted with enthusiasm. Oracle has given me a fantastic opportunity and I urge you to grab it with both hands, you’ll find that you’re with a set of like minded people from all works of life that make work both interesting and fun. Even when the pressure is on you know that you can always get help and advice from someone nearby. My last word of advice is don’t be afraid to stick your neck out, everyone here is willing to learn, try something new and innovate, your voice will be heard and who knows, you could end up having a large impact on Oracle and your career.” Anthony “I had a great experience working with Oracle, from day one I was treated like a full member of staff with responsibilities of my own. I found that the more I put into the work the more I got out from the experience. Volunteering and being willing to face challenges have made this a more exciting placement. I am given a lot of leeway to do my own projects and so I’ve found that I am really enjoying my time here.” Caoimhe “I am currently spending my year of placement within the Release Management Team in the WPTG. My main role is to handle the finance process of all translation projects under 100k which includes creating workspecs and PO's, sending out kits, dealing with vendor queries and handling the invoicing and payment part. I am really enjoying my time here at Oracle, everyone is very open and friendly and willing to help you out with any questions you may have. I would definitely be interested in returning to Oracle after I graduate!” James “I am currently on a 12 month placement with Oracle, working as part of the Worldwide Product Translation Group in the Business Management. The Business Management team provides a global view on WPTG’s vendor and business strategy and is an interface into WPTG for new business. The business management team work together to support the external translation partner network. My role is to support the Business Management team and also to work on various projects when the need arises. This involves working with translation vendors and working with other Oracle employees worldwide. I am really enjoying my time working for Oracle, at times it can be challenging bit also very rewarding. I would recommend any student wanting to undertake a placement year to apply to Oracle, I made some great friends and I will never forget my time in Dublin.” Artemij “From working within Oracle, I have truly understood what "career path" is, and what opportunities a large corporation like Oracle can offer. Without any illusions, the work itself is exciting, sometimes challenging, tests your ability to handle pressure, to make decisions and take responsibility, to learn quickly and cooperate efficiently in order to solve a problem. I have learned a lot about myself. What I am good at, where and what I can do better. My placement at Oracle has allowed me to get a clearer picture of what I want, and which door I am going to open after college. • Why did Git become so popular?

- by Jungle Hunter
Almost every article you read comparing Git and Mercurial it seems like Mercurial has a better command line UX with each command being limited to one idea only (unlike say git checkout). But at some point Git suddenly became super popular and literally exploded. Source: Debian What happened in 2010-01 that things suddenly changed. Looks like GitHub was founded earlier than that - 2008. Edit: Git 1.7.0 seems to be released at the same time: January 2012. Here are the 1.7.0 release notes and the file history with the corresponding dates.

• Can anyone tell me why Gnome 3 looks like as if it were a gnome fallback session in my virtualbox?

- by Elysium
For some reason Gnome 3 wont work in my virtualbox. Both gnome classic and gnome look exactly identical. The version of my virtualbox is: 4.1.2_ Ubuntu r38459 The 3D acceleration is on in the virtualbox and the Guest Additions is installed in the virtualbox from the software center. Obviously, the graphic card driver is installed on the main Ubuntu system I am using with my laptop. (although the post-release updates can't be installed for whatever reason) Gnome shell is installed from the software center in the virtualbox. Now the issue is that the gnome and gnome classic look like just the same. Here is an image of what gnome looks like (so does gnome classic too....so I am only posting one image): What causes this issue? By the way....I am using Ubuntu 11.10 with gnome fallback session.

• A certain flash application causes a system crash

- by noobermin
It's no surprise I guess. Go here to try it! http://www.belgeler.com/blg/2hni/griffiths-introduction-to-electrodynamics-3-ed-solutions-manual It's wonderful, after a few seconds, top shows that our good friend plugin-container takes 83% of the physical memory (8 GB) before everything freezes and the PC doesn't respond. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 and I have an nvidia (GTS 250) card with the "post-release updates" version of the driver. OFFTOPIC: Yes, it's the solutions manual. I'm self-studying so I don't have a professor to check my work. Please don't judge me :)

• Handbrake-powered VidCoder gets a native 64-bit version

A while back, VidCoder -- the Windows video disc ripping program -- added support for Blu-ray discs. With Handbrake's engine under the hood, VidCoder offers an easy-to-use interface and simple batch processing of your video files. With the release of version 0.8, there's also now a native 64-bit version for those of you running Windows x64. A number of stability tweaks have also been introduced. As Baz pointed out in our comments last time, VidCoder is particular useful on netbooks. If you've got a 1024x600 screen, Handbrake may not even launch for you -- but VidCoder will fire up just fine. Take the new 64-bit version for a spin, and share your thoughts in the comments. • Is there a difference between "." and "source" in bash, after all?

- by ysap
I was looking for the difference between the "." and "source" builtin commands and a few sources (e.g., in this discussion, and the bash manpage) suggest that these are just the same. However, following a problem with environment variables, I conducted a test. I created a file testenv.sh that contains: #!/bin/bash echo $MY_VAR In the command prompt, I performed the following: > chmod +x testenv.sh > MY_VAR=12345 > ./testenv.sh > source testenv.sh 12345 > MY_VAR=12345 ./testenv.sh 12345 [note that the 1st form returned an empty string] So, this little experiment suggests that there is a difference after all, where for the "source" command, the child environment inherits all the variables from the parent one, where for the "." it does not. Am I missing something, or is this is an undocumented/deprecated feature of bash? [ GNU bash, version 4.1.5(1)-release (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu) ]

• 3D Display Issue When Using Latest Java Runtime Versions - Patch now available...

- by [email protected]
Typically I focus my blog posts on Support process topics, and reserve most of the technical topics for the Support newsletter. This topic, however, warrants a quick mention in the blog since I know it's been affecting many users recently. For customers using the Client/Server Deployment of AutoVue, users that had upgraded their client Java Runtime Environment (JRE) to version 1.6.0_19 or later suddenly noticed that their 3D files were opening blank in AutoVue. This issue was due to a change in JRE version 1.6.0_19, and the AutoVue team now offers a patch to address the issue in AutoVue version 20.0.0. The patch number is 10268316, is available through the My Oracle Support portal, and is described further in KM Note 1104821.1. We'll mention it again in our next Support newsletter, and the AutoVue team will target to roll the same fix into the next available release of the product.

• Is there any new method for link-backs [on hold]

- by Mir Hammad
As all SEOs know that google is trying its very best to kill SEO and linkbacks are quite a difficult task now. Although content is the key but my boss is still possessed with linkbacks. I can not do directory posting, link exchange, paid linking, web 2.0 and blog commenting as they are spam now. I do not see what other choice i have except forum posting and article posting. Can someone suggest new method to acquire link backs ? I know almost all traditional methods so don't say press release or etc. If you really have something out of the box or not very much common please share.

• How to use UILongPressGestureRecognizer with sprite drag & wait?

- by ganesh
May be it's asked before also but I couldn't find any good answer. Please tell me how this can be implemented with UILongPressGestureRecognizer? A user drags a sprite from X location to Y location. Then it waits at Y location (touch is not ended yet) for 1 or 2 secs and release the touch i.e touch is ended. In this case, shouldn't following states be triggered in below order for UILongPressGestureRecognizer: UIGestureRecognizerStateBegan UIGestureRecognizerStateChanged UIGestureRecognizerStateEnded ? My problem is if UIPanGestureRecognizer is also implemented to handle drags, UILongPressGesture is never triggered even after Long waits. Any thoughts?

• Override an IOCTL Handler in PQOAL

- by Kate Moss' Big Fan
When porting or creating a BSP to a new platform, we often need to make change to OEMIoControl or HAL IOCTL handler for more specific. Since Microsoft introduced PQOAL in CE 5.0 and more and more BSP today leverages PQOAL to simplify the OAL, we no longer define the OEMIoControl directly. It is somehow analogous to migrate from pure Windows SDK to MFC; people starts to define those MFC handlers and forgot the WinMain and the big message loop. If you ever take a look at the interface between OAL and Kernel, PUBLIC\COMMON\OAK\INC\oemglobal.h, the pfnOEMIoctl is still there just as the entry point of Windows Program is WinMain since day one. (For those may argue about pfnOEMIoctl is not OEMIoControl, I will encourage you to dig into PRIVATE\WINCEOS\COREOS\NK\OEMMAIN\oemglobal.c which initialized pfnOEMIoctl to OEMIoControl. The interface is just to split OAL and Kernel which no longer linked to one executable file in CE 6, all of the function signature is still identical) So let's trace into PQOAL to realize how it implements OEMIoControl and how can we override an IOCTL handler we interest. First thing to know is the entry point (just as finding the WinMain in MFC), OEMIoControl is defined in PLATFORM\COMMON\SRC\COMMON\IOCTL\ioctl.c. Basically, it does nothing special but scan a pre-defined IOCTL table, g_oalIoCtlTable, and then execute the handler. (The highlight part) Other than that is just for error handling and the use of critical section to serialize the function. BOOL OEMIoControl( DWORD code, VOID *pInBuffer, DWORD inSize, VOID *pOutBuffer, DWORD outSize, DWORD *pOutSize ) { BOOL rc = FALSE; UINT32 i; ... // Search the IOCTL table for the requested code. for (i = 0; g_oalIoCtlTable[i].pfnHandler != NULL; i++) { if (g_oalIoCtlTable[i].code == code) break; } // Indicate unsupported code if (g_oalIoCtlTable[i].pfnHandler == NULL) { NKSetLastError(ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED); OALMSG(OAL_IOCTL, ( L"OEMIoControl: Unsupported Code 0x%x - device 0x%04x func %d\r\n", code, code >> 16, (code >> 2)&0x0FFF )); goto cleanUp; } // Take critical section if required (after postinit & no flag) if ( g_ioctlState.postInit && (g_oalIoCtlTable[i].flags & OAL_IOCTL_FLAG_NOCS) == 0 ) { // Take critical section EnterCriticalSection(&g_ioctlState.cs); } // Execute the handler rc = g_oalIoCtlTable[i].pfnHandler( code, pInBuffer, inSize, pOutBuffer, outSize, pOutSize ); // Release critical section if it was taken above if ( g_ioctlState.postInit && (g_oalIoCtlTable[i].flags & OAL_IOCTL_FLAG_NOCS) == 0 ) { // Release critical section LeaveCriticalSection(&g_ioctlState.cs); } cleanUp: OALMSG(OAL_IOCTL&&OAL_FUNC, (L"-OEMIoControl(rc = %d)\r\n", rc )); return rc; } Where is the g_oalIoCtlTable? It is defined in your BSP. Let's use DeviceEmulator BSP as an example. The PLATFORM\DEVICEEMULATOR\SRC\OAL\OALLIB\ioctl.c defines the table as const OAL_IOCTL_HANDLER g_oalIoCtlTable[] = { #include "ioctl_tab.h" }; And that leads to PLATFORM\DEVICEEMULATOR\SRC\INC\ioctl_tab.h which defined some of IOCTL handler but others are defined in oal_ioctl_tab.h which is under PLATFORM\COMMON\SRC\INC\. Finally, we got the full table body! (Just like tracing MFC, always jumping back and forth). The format of table is very straight forward, IOCTL code, Flags and Handler Function // IOCTL CODE, Flags Handler Function //------------------------------------------------------------------------------ { IOCTL_HAL_INITREGISTRY, 0, OALIoCtlHalInitRegistry }, { IOCTL_HAL_INIT_RTC, 0, OALIoCtlHalInitRTC }, { IOCTL_HAL_REBOOT, 0, OALIoCtlHalReboot }, The PQOAL scans through the table until it find a matched IOCTL code, then invokes the handler function. Since it scans the table from the top which means if we define TWO handler with same IOCTL code, the first one is always invoked with no exception. Now back to the PLATFORM\DEVICEEMULATOR\SRC\INC\ioctl_tab.h, with the following table { IOCTL_HAL_INITREGISTRY, 0, OALIoCtlDeviceEmulatorHalInitRegistry }, ... #include <oal_ioctl_tab.h> Note the IOCTL_HAL_INITREGISTRY handler are defined in both BSP's local ioctl_tab.h and the common oal_ioctl_tab.h, but due to BSP's local handler comes before "#include <oal_ioctl_tab.h>" so we know the OALIoCtlDeviceEmulatorHalInitRegistry always get called. In this example, the DeviceEmulator BSP overrides the IOCTL_HAL_INITREGISTRY handler from OALIoCtlHalInitRegistry to OALIoCtlDeviceEmulatorHalInitRegistry by manipulating the g_oalIoCtlTable table. (In some point of view, it is similar to message map in MFC) Please be aware, when you override an IOCTL handler in PQOAL, you may want to clone the original implementation to your BSP and change to meet your need. It is recommended and save you the redundant works but remember to rename the handler function (Just like the DeviceEmulator it changes the name of OALIoCtlHalInitRegistry to OALIoCtlDeviceEmulatorHalInitRegistry). If you don't change the name, linker may not be happy (due to name conflict) and the more important is by using different handler name, you could always redirect the handler back to original one. (It is like the concept of OOP that calling a function in base class; still not so clear? I am goinf to show you soon!) The OALIoCtlDeviceEmulatorHalInitRegistry setups DeviceEmulator specific registry settings and in the end, if everything goes well, it calls the OALIoCtlHalInitRegistry (PLATFORM\COMMON\SRC\COMMON\IOCTL\reginit.c) to do the rest. if(fOk) { fOk = OALIoCtlHalInitRegistry(code, pInpBuffer, inpSize, pOutBuffer, outSize, pOutSize); } Now you got the picture, whenever you want to override an IOCTL hadnler that is implemented in PQOAL just Clone the handler function to your BSP as a template. Simple name change for the handler function, and a name change in the IOCTL table header file that maps the IOCTL with the function Implement your IOCTL handler and whenever you need to redirect it back just calling the original handler function. It is the standard way of implementing a custom IOCTL and most Microsoft developers prefer. The mapping of IOCTL routine to IOCTL code is platform specific - you control the header file that does that mapping.

A long time coming, the press release is finally out: Oracle Introduces Free Version of Oracle Application Development Framework New Oracle ADF Essentials Brings ADF Benefits to the Broader Developer Community Oracle ADF Essentials is a free packaging of core technologies from the Oracle Application Development Framework that can be used to develop and deploy applications that include ADF Business Components, ADF Controller, ADF Binding, and ADF Faces Rich Client Components without incurring licensing costs. Both Oracle JDeveloper and Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse provide visual and declarative development experience for using it. Oracle ADF Essentials comes with specific instructions and certification for deploying applications on the open-source Glassfish server, but the license is not limited to that server. For more information and to download it (it's only 20MB), see Oracle ADF Essentials page on OTN.

• Issues with ILMerge, Lambda Expressions and VS2010 merging?

- by John Blumenauer
A little Background For quite some time now, it’s been possible to merge multiple .NET assemblies into a single assembly using ILMerge in Visual Studio 2008. This is especially helpful when writing wrapper assemblies for 3rd-party libraries where it’s desirable to minimize the number of assemblies for distribution. During the merge process, ILMerge will take a set of assemblies and merge them into a single assembly. The resulting assembly can be either an executable or a DLL and is identified as the primary assembly. Issue During a recent project, I discovered using ILMerge to merge assemblies containing lambda expressions in Visual Studio 2010 is resulting in invalid primary assemblies. The code below is not where the initial issue was identified, I will merely use it to illustrate the problem at hand. In order to describe the issue, I created a console application and a class library for calculating a few math functions utilizing lambda expressions. The code is available for download at the bottom of this blog entry. MathLib.cs using System; namespace MathLib { public static class MathHelpers { public static Func<double, double, double> Hypotenuse = (x, y) => Math.Sqrt(x * x + y * y); static readonly Func<int, int, bool> divisibleBy = (int a, int b) => a % b == 0; public static bool IsPrimeNumber(int x) { { for (int i = 2; i <= x / 2; i++) if (divisibleBy(x, i)) return false; return true; }; } } } Program.cs using System; using MathLib; namespace ILMergeLambdasConsole { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { int n = 19; if (MathHelpers.IsPrimeNumber(n)) { Console.WriteLine(n + " is prime"); } else { Console.WriteLine(n + " is not prime"); } Console.ReadLine(); } } } Not surprisingly, the preceding code compiles, builds and executes without error prior to running the ILMerge tool. ILMerge Setup In order to utilize ILMerge, the following changes were made to the project. The MathLib.dll assembly was built in release configuration and copied to the MathLib folder. The following folder hierarchy was used for this example: The project file for ILMergeLambdasConsole project file was edited to add the ILMerge post-build configuration. The following lines were added near the bottom of the project file: <Target Name="AfterBuild" Condition="'$(Configuration)' == 'Release'"> <Exec Command=""..\..\lib\ILMerge\Ilmerge.exe" /ndebug /out:@(MainAssembly) "@(IntermediateAssembly)" @(ReferenceCopyLocalPaths->'"%(FullPath)"', ' ')" /> <Delete Files="@(ReferenceCopyLocalPaths->'$(OutDir)%(DestinationSubDirectory)%(Filename)%(Extension)')" /> </Target> The ILMergeLambdasConsole project was modified to reference the MathLib.dll located in the MathLib folder above. ILMerge and ILMerge.exe.config was copied into the ILMerge folder shown above. The contents of ILMerge.exe.config are: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <configuration> <startup useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy="true"> <requiredRuntime safemode="true" imageVersion="v4.0.30319" version="v4.0.30319"/> </startup> </configuration> Post-ILMerge After compiling and building, the MathLib.dll assembly will be merged into the ILMergeLambdasConsole executable. Unfortunately, executing ILMergeLambdasConsole.exe now results in a crash. The ILMerge documentation recommends using PEVerify.exe to validate assemblies after merging. Executing PEVerify.exe against the ILMergeLambdasConsole.exe assembly results in the following error: Further investigation by using Reflector reveals the divisibleBy method in the MathHelpers class looks a bit questionable after the merge. Prior to using ILMerge, the same divisibleBy method appeared as the following in Reflector: It’s pretty obvious something has gone awry during the merge process. However, this is only occurring when building within the Visual Studio 2010 environment. The same code and configuration built within Visual Studio 2008 executes fine. I’m still investigating the issue. If anyone has already experienced this situation and solved it, I would love to hear from you. However, as of right now, it looks like something has gone terribly wrong when executing ILMerge against assemblies containing Lambdas in Visual Studio 2010. Solution Files ILMergeLambdaExpression
