• LINQ to Entities exceptions (ElementAtOrDefault and CompareObjectEqual)

  I am working on a shipping platform which will eventually automate shipping through several major carriers. I have a ShipmentsView Usercontrol which displayes a list of Shipments (returned by EntityFramework), and when a user clicks on a shipment item, it spawns a ShipmentEditView and passes the ShipmentID (RecordKey) to that view. I initially wrestled with trying to get the context from the parent (ShipmentsView) and finally gave up resolving to get to it later. I wanted to do this to keep a single instance of the context. anyhow, I now create a new instance of the context in my ShipmentEditViewModel, and query against it for the Shipment record. I know I could just pass the record, but I wanted to use the Ocean Framework that Karl Shifflett wrote and don't want to muck about writing new transition methods. So anyhow, I query and when stepping through, I can see that it returns a record, as soon as execution reached the point where it assigned the query result to the e.Result property, it throws up the following exception depending on the query I used. I have been trying to get this thing to display a record for like three days. i am seriously thinking about going back and re=-engineering it without the MVVM pattern (which I realize I am only starting to learn and understand) if only to make the &$^%ed thing work. • Handle exceptions with WPF and MVVM

  I am attempting to build an application using WPF and the MVVM pattern. I have my Views being populated from my ViewModel purely through databinding. I want to have a central place to handle all exceptions which occur in my application so I can notify the user and log the error appropriately. I know about Dispatcher.UnhandledException but this does not do the job as exception that occur during databinding are logged to the output windows. Because my View is databound to my ViewModel the entire application is pretty much controlled via databinding so I have no way to log my errors. Is there a way to generically handle the exceptions raised during databinding, without having to put try blocks around all my ViewModel public's? • Support for nested model and class validation with ASP.NET MVC 2.0

  I'm trying to validate a model containing other objects with validation rules using the System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations attributes was hoping the default MVC implementation would suffice: var obj = js.Deserialize(json, objectInfo.ObjectType); if(!TryValidateModel(obj)) { // Handle failed model validation. } The object is composed of primitive types but also contains other classes which also use DataAnnotications. Like so: public class Entry { [Required] public Person Subscriber { get; set; } [Required] public String Company { get; set; } } public class Person { public String FirstName { get; set;} [Required] public String Surname { get; set; } } The problem is that the ASP.NET MVC validation only goes down 1 level and only evaluates the properties of the top level class, as can be read on digitallycreated.net/Blog/54/deep-inside-asp.net-mvc-2-model-metadata-and-validation. Does anyone know an elegant solution to this? I've tried xVal, but they seem to use a non-recursive pattern (http://blog.stevensanderson.com/2009/01/10/xval-a-validation-framework-for-aspnet-mvc/). Someone must have run into this problem before right? Nesting objects in your model doesn't seem so weird if you're designing a web service.

  Does anybody knows how can component <ice:selectInputDate> be mapped on a java.util.Calendar field, not java.util.Date? I am using from IceFaces version 1.8.2, the component <ice:selectInputDate>. This component requires to be bound with a java.util.Date proeprty. For example, value="#{bean.myDate}", the myDate field must be of type java.util.Date. But I need my date field to be of type java.util.Calendar. • MSTest: Problems with DeploymentItem attribute

  Hi, I'm currently maintaining an "old" system written in C#.net, removing some obsolete features and doing some refactoring. Thanks god, the previous guy wrote some unit tests (MSTests). I quite comfortable with JUnit tests, but didn't do yet much with MSTests. The test methods have a DeploymentItem attribute, specifying a text file which is parsed by the business logic method that is being tested and a 2nd DeploymentItem where just a path has been specified containing a bunch of TIF files that have to be deployed too. [TestMethod()] [DeploymentItem(@"files\valid\valid_entries.txt")] [DeploymentItem(@"files\tif\")] public void ExistsTifTest() { ... } The tests worked before, but now I had to change the names of the TIF files contained in the \files\tif directory. According to a rule, the TIF filenames have to match a certain pattern which is also checked by the ExistsTifTest() method. Now I had to change the filenames in order to adapt them to the new requirements and suddently the TIF files are no more being deployed as before. Can someone give me a hint why this happens or what may be the cause? The same thing happens also if I add a new text-file say "my2ndTest.txt" beside the "valid_entries.txt" in the \files\valid\ directory with the according DeploymentItem attribute on the test method. The file doesn't get deployed? I got the images now deployed by defining the deployment path directly in the testrunconfig, but I'd like to understand why these things happen or why for instance my new file "my2ndTest.txt" doesn't get deployed while the others do. • MVP, WinForms - how to avoid bloated view, presenter and presentation model

  When implementing MVP pattern in winforms I often find bloated view interfaces with too many properties, setters and getters. An easy example with be a view with 3 buttons and 7 textboxes, all having value, enabled and visible properties exposed from the view. Adding validation results for this, and you could easily end up with an interface with 40ish properties. Using the Presentation Model, there'll be a model with the same number of properties aswell. How do you easily sync the view and the presentation model without having bloated presenter logic that pass all the values back and forth? (With that 80ish line presenter code, imagine with the presenter test that mocks the model and view will look like..160ish lines of code just to mock that transfer.) Is there any framework to handle this without resorting to winforms databinding? (you might want to use different views than a winforms view. According to some, this sync should be the presenters job..) Would you use AutoMapper? Maybe im asking the wrong questions, but it seems to me MVP easily gets bloated without some good solution here..

And the blue subscriber will be listening for p1 events. Step 2: The p0 event is fired by another component to the Event Handler A p0 event is fired to the Event Handler The event handler notifies it's subscribers of the event, calling the callback methods they specified when they subscribed in Step 1: Subscribing. Note that the blue subscriber is not notified because it was not listening for p0 events. Step 3: The p1 event is fired a component to the Event Handler The p1 event is fired by another component Just as before except that now the blue subscriber receives the event through its callback and the other two green subscribers do not receive the event. Because it isn't just a basic publisher/subscriber, it has to be called something else I would think.

  I have an application which uses MyGeneration's dOODads ORM to generate it's Data Access Layer. dOODad works by generating a persistance class for each table in the database. I don't believe that an Employee class should have Employees(the DAL) specifics in its methods - or perhaps this is acceptable? Is it possible to implement some form of repository pattern? • Preloading multiple comboboxes/listbox itemssource with enumerated values using WCF RIA Services

  I would like to be able to load several RIA entitysets in a single call without chaining/nesting several small LoadOperations together so that they load sequentially. I have several pages that have a number of comboboxes on them. These comboboxes are populated with static values from a database (for example status values). Right now I preload these values in my VM by one method that strings together a series of LoadOperations for each type that I want to load. For example: public void LoadEnums() { context.Load(context.GetMyStatusValues1Query()).Completed += (s, e) => { this.StatusValues1 = context.StatusValues1; context.Load(context.GetMyStatusValues2()).Completed += (s1, e1) => { this.StatusValues2 = context.StatusValues2; context.Load(context.GetMyStatusValues3Query()).Completed += (s2, e2) => { this.StatusValues3 = context.StatusValues3; (....and so on) }; }; }; }; While this works fine, it seems a bit nasty. Also, I would like to know when the last loadoperation completes so that I can load whatever entity I want to work on after this, so that these enumerated values resolve properly in form elements like comboboxes and listboxes. (I think) I can't do this easily above without creating a delegate and calling that on the completion of the last loadoperation. So my question is: does anyone out there know a better pattern to use, ideally where I can load all my static entitysets in a single LoadOperation?

  I have trouble finding way to correctly refactor this code so that there would be as little duplicate code as possible, I have a couple of methods like this (pseudocode): public List<Something> parseSomething(Node n){ List<Something> somethings = new ArrayList<Something>(); initialize(); sameCodeInBothClasses(); List<Node> nodes = getChildrenByName(n, "somename"); for(Node n:nodes){ method(); actionA(); somethings.add(new Something(actionB()); } return somethings; } methods sameCodeInBothClasses() are same in all classes but where it differs is what hapens in for loop actionA() and it also adds an element to the List of different type. Should I use Strategy pattern for the different parts inside loop? What about the return value (The type of list differs), should the method return just List<Object> that I would then cast to appropriate type? Should I pass the class I want to return as parameter?

• Reset or clear the UIView from UILabels

  Hello, I have created an UIView on which I have a number of labels and I'm also drawing some lines in the same UIView. Sometimes I update the lines that I'm drawing. Now, the problem I am having is that when I update the lines, they get drawn according to my wish. But the labels are overwriting themselves. This shouldn't have been a problem if it wasn't for that the position is changed about 1 pixel and that makes the text go blurry. I don't know how to remove the labels before they are redrawn. I do remove the labels from the superview and add them back when drawRect is called, but the SetNeedDisplay doesn't clear the screen before the graphic is updated, I guess (I think I read that SetNeedsDisplay/drawRect doesn't clear the screen, just updating the content. Couldn't find the text now while searching)? What is the pattern to use here, should I create a retangle with the size of the screen (or the area where the labels are) and fill it with the background colour, or is there any other way to clear or reset the UIView (I don't want to release and create the UIView again). The view is created in IB and associated with a custom UIView. In IB I add some buttons and other static labels. The above labels and graphics is created programatically. Any comments would be helpful! Thanks in advance!

• Session State with MVP and Application Controller patterns

  Hi, I've created an MVP (passive view) framework for development and decided to go for an Application Controller pattern to manage the navigation between views. This is targeted at WinForms, ASP.NET and WPF interfaces. Although I'm not 100% convinced that these view technologies really swappable, that's my aim at the moment so my MVP framework is quite lightweight. What I'm struggling to fit in is the concept of a "Business Conversation" that needs state information to be either (a) maintained for the lifetime of the View or, more likely, (b) maintained across several views for the lifetime of a use case (business conversation). I want state management to be part of the framework as I don't want developers to worry about it. All they need to do is to "start" a conversation, "Register" objects and the framework does the rest until the "end" a conversation. Has anybody got any thoughts (patterns) to how to fit this into MVP? I was thinking it may be part of the Application Controller responsibility (delegating to a Conversation Manager object) as it knows about current state in order to send the user to the next view.... but then I thought it may be up to the Presenter to start and end the conversation so then it comes down the presenters to manage conversations and the objects registered for the that conversation. Unfortunately that means presenters can't be used in different conversations... so that idea doesn't seem right. As you can see, I don't think there is an easy answer (and I've looked for a while). So anybody else got any thoughts?

• WPF - Dynamic tooltip

  I have a class ToolTipProvider which has a method string GetToolTip(UIElement element) which will return a specific tooltip for the UIElement specified, based on various factors including properties of the UIElement itself and also looking up into documentation which can be changed dynamically. It will also probably run in a thread so when the form first fires up the tooltips will be something like the visual studio 'Document cache is still being constructed', then populated in the background. I want to allow this to be used in any wpf form with the minimum effort for the developer. Essentially I want to insert an ObjectDataProvider resource into the Window.Resources to wrap my ToolTipProvider object, then I think I need to create a tooltip (called e.g. MyToolTipProvider) in the resources which references that ObjectDataProvider, then on any element which requires this tooltip functionality it would just be a case of ToolTip="{StaticResource MyToolTipProvider}" however I can't work out a) how to bind the actual elemnt itself to the MethodParameters of the objectdataprovider, or b) how to force it to call the method each time the tooltip is opened. Any ideas/pointers on the general pattern I need? Not looking for complete solution, just any ideas from those more experienced

• Web-based clients vs thick/rich clients?

  My company is a software solutions provider to a major telecommunications company. The environment is currently IBM WebSphere-based with front-end IBM Portal servers talking to a cluster of back-end WebSphere Application Servers providing EJB services. Some of the portlets use our own home-grown MVC-pattern and some are written in JSF. Recently we did a proof-of-concept rich/thick-client application that communicates directly with the EJB's on the back-end servers. It was written in NetBeans Platform and uses the WebSphere application client library to establish communication with the EJB's. The really painful bit was getting the client to use secure JAAS/SSL communications. But, after that was resolved, we've found that the rich client has a number of advantages over the web-based portal client applications we've become accustomed to: Enormous performance advantage (CORBA vs. HTTP, cut out the Portal Server middle man) Development is simplified and faster due to use of NetBeans' visual designer and Swing's generally robust architecture The debug cycle is shortened by not having to deploy your client application to a test server No mishmash of technologies as with web-based development (Struts, JSF, JQuery, HTML, JSTL etc., etc.) After enduring the pain of web-based development (even JSF) for a while now, I've come to the following conclusion: Rich clients aren't right for every situation, but when you're developing an in-house intranet-based solution, then you'd be crazy not to consider NetBeans Platform or Eclipse RCP. • How to avoid coupling when using regions in Composite WPF

  I have an application designed using Microsoft's Composite Application Library. My shell has several regions defined so that I can inject content from separate modules. I'm looking for a design pattern that will reduce the coupling that these regions introduce. In all examples I have seen, regions are defined and accessed using a string in a static class in the infrastructure project.: <ItemsControl cal:RegionManager.RegionName="{x:Static inf:RegionNames.TabRegion}"> public static class RegionNames { public const string TabRegion = "TabRegion"; } This introduces an dependency on the shell from the infrastructure project, because the infrastructure project is now defining some of the shell's capabilities. The CAL RegionManager throws an exception if you attempt to access a region which is not defined, so I must ensure that the infrastructure and shell projects are kept in sync. Is there a way to isolate the shell's regions so that they are defined only within the shell (no region names in the infrastructure project)? Is there a way to make regions optional, so that shells can be swapped out even if they don't have all the same regions? (An example: One shell has menu and toolbar regions, another only has the menu... modules should be able to inject into the toolbar if it's available, without failing when it's not)

• WPF MVVM Picklist Example

  Hi, I am looking for a way of easily maintaining a list of Users belonging to a particular Group. I have thought about using a Picklist, where I have 2 listboxs, the first contains a list of Users the second a list of Users belonging to the Group. There will be buttons to allow the adding and removing of selected Users from the Group. As users are added they move from the left listbox to the right, as they are removed they are move from the right to the list. This is pretty common situation. Do you know of any examples of doing this in WPF using the MVVM pattern? I am having difficulty understand how the binding may work to my View Model and Business Entities. Especially persisting the data back to the database. I am using stored procedure calls to do the CRUD logic, so I need to keep a list of which Users had been removed so I can delete them. Is this the best way to perform this functionality or is there a better way. I simply want to pick from a list (the list may be large).

Shipment and package entities are persisted in SQL database, and are displayed in a WPF view. Upon initial retrieval of the records, there is a noticeable pause before displaying the new shipments view, and I have not even implemented the code that counts shipments that are overdue/active yet (which will necessitate a tracking check via web service, and a lot of time). I have built this with the Ocean framework, and all appears to be doing well, except when I first started my foray into multi-threading. It broke, and it appeared to break something in Ocean... I have not had the chance to figure out the usage of the SQL ORM thing in Ocean so I am using Entity Framework (perhaps one of these days i will look at NHibernate or something too). Any information would be greatly appreciated. I have looked at a number of articles and they all have examples of simple uses. Some have mentioned the Dispatcher, but none really go very far into how it is used. Anyone know any good tutorials? Cory

• Async Load JavaScript Files with Callback

  Hi All, I am trying to write an ultra simple solution to load a bunch of JS files asynchronously. I have the following script below so far. However the callback is sometimes called when the scripts aren't actually loaded which causes a variable not found error. If I refresh the page sometimes it just works because I guess the files are coming straight from the cache and thus are there quicker than the callback is called, it's very strange? var Loader = function () { } Loader.prototype = { require: function (scripts, callback) { this.loadCount = 0; this.totalRequired = scripts.length; this.callback = callback; for (var i = 0; i < scripts.length; i++) { this.writeScript(scripts[i]); } }, loaded: function (evt) { this.loadCount++; if (this.loadCount == this.totalRequired && typeof this.callback == 'function') this.callback.call(); }, writeScript: function (src) { var self = this; var s = document.createElement('script'); s.type = "text/javascript"; s.async = true; s.src = src; s.addEventListener('load', function (e) { self.loaded(e); }, false); var head = document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0]; head.appendChild(s); } } Is there anyway to test that a JS file is completely loaded, without putting something in the actual JS file it's self, because I would like to use the same pattern to load libraries out of my control (GMaps etc). • Spring Security HTTP Basic Authentication

  Hi people! I am trying to do a really simple basic authentication with Spring Security. I have configured properly the namespace, and there are no Exceptions in the server. In my "servlet.xml" I have got the next for Spring Security: <security:http> <security:http-basic></security:http-basic> <security:intercept-url method="POST" pattern="/**" access="ROLE_USER" /> </security:http> <security:authentication-manager alias="authenticationManager"> <security:authentication-provider> <security:user-service> <security:user name="cucu" password="tas" authorities="ROLE_USER" /> <security:user name="bob" password="bobspassword" authorities="ROLE_USER" /> </security:user-service> </security:authentication-provider> </security:authentication-manager> It nearly all goes perfect: the methods that are not POST doesn't prompt any login form, and the POST method prompt it. The problem is, that nor "cucu", neither "bob" can login there. Can anyone see what am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance! ;-)
