  • Implementing an Online Waiting Room

    My organization is building a new version of our ticketing site and is looking for the best way to build an online waiting room when the number of users in our purchase path exceeds a certain limit. The best version of this queue would let new users in after existing users have either completed their purchase or have exceeded a timeout limit after entering the path. I'm trying to get an idea of how this has been implemented by other organizations. Has anyone out there done something similar or have any experience with this? We have some ideas, but I'd like to get a sense of what solutions have been tried and what problems those solutions have run up against. Just to be complete, this site is being built in Ruby on Rails, though I'd love to hear about how people have solved this regardless of platform.

  • Associate a URL with a resource within my application

    When I visit http://my-application.com/posts/1 in my browser, Rails knows I'm looking for the Post with id = 1. How can I get my application to do this internally? I.e., I'd like a function (call it associate_with_resource) that takes a string containing a URL as its input and outputs the associated resource. For example: >> associate_with_resource('http://my-application.com/posts/1') => #<Post id: 1, ... > (I'd like to be able to use associate_with_resource throughout my application though -- not only in the console)

  • Does the '#' modifier for cropping images in Paperclip work only for square images?

    It is very well documented that you can create square thumbnails with center cropping with Paperclip (4) and Rails (4). I would like to have an image of very specific dimensions (e.g. 200x100) and if input an image of let's say 800x200 it is first resized to 400x100 and then the width (400) is cropped down to 200 pixel from the center (i.e. 100px cut from the right and 100 px cut from the left). I tried with 200x100# and it does not appear to work (i.e. the '#' has no effect). I have found that I could adapt other solutions such as this, but I was wondering if '#' is supposed to work only for cropping to square images, or is a Paperclip bug or I am doing something wrong...

  • Should I make up my own HTTP status codes? (a la Twitter 420: Enhance Your Calm)

    I'm currently implementing an HTTP API, my first ever. I've been spending a lot of time looking at the Wikipedia page for HTTP status codes, because I'm determined to implement the right codes for the right situations. Listed on that page is a code with number 420, which is a custom code that Twitter used to use for rate limiting. There is already a code for rate limiting, though. It's 429. This led me to wonder why they would set a custom one, when there is already a use case. Is that just being cute? And if so, then which circumstances would make it acceptable to return a different status code, and what, if any problems may clients have with it? I read somewhere that Mozilla doesn't implement the joke 418: I’m a teapot response, which makes me think that clients choose which status codes they implement. If that's true, then I can imagine Twitter's funny little enhance your calm code being problematic. Unless I'm mistaken, and we can appropriate any code number to mean whatever we like, and that only convention dictates that 404 means not found, and 429 means take it easy.

  • Twitpic API from iPhone - pic posted but no URL returned?

    This is a weird one... With the help of people here, I've got my iPhone app posting to TwitPic successfully - and when I first got it working, I could see an XML result being returned too... But for some reason over the past two days, the API call seems to succeed - the pic appears on TwitPic - but... the response seems to be empty... Anyone have any ideas? Seen anything similar?   • sudo port install cmake trouble (for MGTwitterEngine)

    I am following This Tutorial on installing MGTwitterEngine on my MAC osx 10.6.2. I am stuck on this step: sudo port install cmake it gives me the following error: dlopen(/opt/local/share/macports/Tcl/pextlib1.0/Pextlib.dylib, 10): no suitable image found. Did find: /opt/local/share/macports/Tcl/pextlib1.0/Pextlib.dylib: no matching architecture in universal wrapper while executing "load /opt/local/share/macports/Tcl/pextlib1.0/Pextlib.dylib" ("package ifneeded Pextlib 1.0" script) invoked from within "package require Pextlib 1.0" (file "/opt/local/bin/port" line 40) Rex-MacBook-Pro:~ Rex$ Thus, I cannot use TERMINAL to install YAJL to get my app to build. Help needed. P.S. In terminal preferences, Shells Open With is either /usr/bin/login or /bin/bash YAJL is supposedly installed at /Users/Rex I am using OSX 10.6.2

In the console, I get: Request 7E4C3097-88D6-45F1-90D2-AD8205FBAAC5 failed with error: Error Domain=HTTP Code=400 "Operation could not be completed. (HTTP error 400.)" Is there a way around this? Am I implementing the delegate method right? (Also, I had difficulty installing the YAJL stuff for the engine, and wonder if that has something to do with it)

    I run Ubuntu server 8.04 on Linode with multiple Rails apps under Passenger + nginx. Today I've noticed it takes quite a lot of time to load a page (5-10 secs). And it's not only websites, ssh seems to be affected too. Having no clue why this may be happening, I started to check different things. I checked how the log files are rotated, I checked if there's enough free disk space and memory. I also checked IO rate, here's the output: $ iostat avg-cpu: %user %nice %system %iowait %steal %idle 0.17 0.00 0.02 0.57 0.16 99.07 Device: tps Blk_read/s Blk_wrtn/s Blk_read Blk_wrtn xvda 2.25 39.50 16.08 147042 59856 xvdb 0.00 0.05 0.00 192 0 xvdc 2.20 25.93 24.93 96530 92808 xvdd 0.01 0.12 0.00 434 16 xvde 0.04 0.23 0.35 858 1304 xvdf 0.37 0.31 4.12 1162 15352 Rebooting didn't help either.   • Rails: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock'

    So I've got a Ruby on Rails application that I am trying to run (in development) on Snow Leopard. I've got it working on my Ubuntu computer, but now I need to get my Snow Leopard environment set up. Originally, I installed the MySQL 2.8.1 Ruby Gem and was running into this issue: uninitialized constant MysqlCompat::MysqlRes But thanks to this tutorial I was able to resolve it by running this command and installing a previous version of the Gem: export ARCHFLAGS="-arch i386 -arch x86_64" ;sudo gem install --no-rdoc --no-ri -v=2.7 mysql -- --with-mysql-dir=/usr/local/mysql --with-mysql-config=/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql_config Now that I've resolved that issue, I'm running into a different error: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' This happens when I try to run rake db:migrate as well as when the server is running. How can I resolve this issue?

    Hi Everybody, i'm running Windows as well as Ubuntu and like to sync both tweetdeck installations via dropbox. Therefore i need to locate two files: td_26_[username].db preferences_[username].xml I found them on windows under the folder c:\Users[account]\AppData\Roaming\TweetDeckFast.[random string]\Local Store\ But i can't find them on my ubuntu installation.     Hey guys. I am writing an App using JTwitter however I need to authenticate in order to not have the 150 requests per minute on the public api. Jtwitter seems to support OAuth however I have some questions. My app will be running behind a company firewall - so the URL wont be accessible outside of the company's network - will callback authorisation work, and does anybody have an example of using callback authorisation using OAuth in JTwitter - because I cannot work it out in order to try it.     Ok so i'm executing the following line of code in javascript RegExp('(http:\/\/t.co\/)[a-zA-Z0-9\-\.]{8}').exec(tcont); where tcont is equal to some string like 'Test tweet to http://t.co/GXmaUyNL' (the content of a tweet obtained by jquery). However it is returning, in the case above for example, 'http://t.co/GXmaUyNL,http://t.co/'. This is frustracting because I want the url without the bit on the end - after and including the comma. Any ideas why this is appearing? Thanks

    I am extremely new to this so please don't shoot me down: I have set up a Linode running Ubuntu, It is all sort of working except Nginx. I am following this guide: http://rubysource.com/deploying-a-rails-application/ And this for nginx: http://library.linode.com/web-servers/nginx/installation/ubuntu-10.04-lucid When I go to my IP, I get a 500 internal server error. I have tried starting nginx and it looks like it starts fine. I run this: ps awx | grep nginx and I get: 308 ? Ss 0:00 nginx: master process /usr/sbin/nginx 2309 ? S 0:00 nginx: worker process 2311 ?
