• Complex string matching with fuzzywuzzy

  I'm attempting to write a process that matches obscure strings to a single 'master string' for further processing. I have a lot of data that looks something like this: Basketball Basket Ball Football BasketBallR BBall BBall - r FootB ...and so on. These need to be mapped to a master record like so: Basketball = Basket Ball, BBall Basketball - R = BasketBallR, BBall - r I also have instances of data resembling this format: Football -r FootBall - r-g/H,Q,HH These situations need to be separated into different categories before being mapped. For example FootBall - r-g/H,Q,HH should be: Football - r Football - g Football - H Football - Q Football - HH At this point, it still needs to be mapped to a master record... I've tried several different combinations of fuzzywuzzy matching methods, Levenshtein Distance measurements, regex, etc. and can't seem to find a reliable method to logically associate different naming styles of a single item with a master name. I'm throwing my hands up in desperation. Are there any existing python resources than can help sort out my problem? Are there other options? Can anybody point out an obvious option that I might have overlooked? Basically, any suggestion, solution, resource or alternative method is greatly appreciated.

• Differentiating between user script input formats

  I have a .NET project at work that provides a couple of (Iron)Python scripts to the customers, to allow them to customize the output of the program. The application generates code for certain machines, and supports a couple of different formats. Until recently, we only provided a script for one format. We're expanding upon that to include support for the others. If the user is using a script, they select their input script before generating the output code. A script designed for Format1 output is going to cause errors if they're trying to generate Format2 output. I need to deal with this. One option would just be to let the customers use common sense, and if they load the wrong script it will just fail, or worse, produce inaccurate data. I'm inclined to provide a little more protection than that. At the moment I'm considering putting a shebang-style comment line at the top of the script, ala: # OUTPUT - Format1 If the user tries to run a Format2 process with a Format1 script, it will warn them. Alternatively I could create different file extensions for the input scripts that vary by type. The file-type comment approach helps prevent the script from actually loading improperly, at the cost of failing to warn the user until they've already selected it, via a dialog box. Using different file extensions would allow me to cut down on visual clutter when providing a File Dialog, but doesn't actually stop them from loading the wrong script. So I'm really not sure if the right approach is to just leave it alone, or provide some safeguards.

• Why can't WARs share session info?

  I have seen several developers looking for a solution for this problem: accessing session information from a different WAR (even when inside the same EAR) - here are some samples: Any way to share session state between different applications in tomcat?, Access session of another web application, different WAR files, shared resources, Tomcat: How to share data between two applications?, What does the crossContext attribute do in Tomcat? Does it enable session sharing? and so on... From all I have searched, there are some specific solutions depending on the container, but it is somehow 'contrary to the specification'. I have also looked through Java EE specification without any luck on finding an answer. Some developers talk about coupling between web applications, but I tend to disagree. What is the reason one would keep WARs inside the same EAR if not coupling? EJBs, for instance, can be accessed locally (even if inside another EJB JAR within the same EAR). More specifically, one of my WARs handles authentication and authorization, and I would like to share this information with other WARs (in the same EAR). I have managed to work around similar problems before by packaging WARs as JARs and putting them into a singular WAR project (WEB-INF/lib). Yet I do not like this solution (it requires a huge effort on servlet naming and so on). And no solution has answered the first (and most important) question: Why can't WARs share session information?

• Static / Shared Helper Functions vs Built-In Methods

  This is a simple question but a design consideration that I often run across in my day to day development work. Lets say that you have a class that represents some kinds of collection. Public Class ModifiedCustomerOrders Public Property Orders as List(Of ModifiedOrders) End Class Within this class you do all kinds of important work, such as combining many different information sources and, eventually, build the Modified Customer Orders. Now, you have different processes that consume this class, each of which needs a slightly different slice of the ModifiedCustomerOrders items. To enable this, you want to add filtering functionality. How do you go about this? Do you: Add Filtering calls to the ModifiedCustomerOrders class so that you can say: MyOrdersClass.RemoveCanceledOrders() Create a Static / Shared "tooling" class that allows you to call: OrdersFilters.RemoveCanceledOrders(MyOrders) Create an extension method to accomplish the same feat as #2 but with less typing: MyOrders.RemoveCanceledOrders() Create a "Service" method that handles the getting of Orders as appropriate to the calling function, while using one of the previous approaches "under the hood". OrdersService.GetOrdersForProcessA() Others? I tend to prefer the tooling / extension method approaches as they make testing a little bit simpler. Although I dependency inject all my sourcing data into the ModifiedCustomerOrders, having it as part of the class makes it a little bit more complicated to test. Typically, I choose to use extension methods where I am doing parameterless transformations / filters. As they get more complex, I will move it into a static class instead. Thoughts on this approach? How would you approach it?

• How to calculate new velocities between resting objects (AABB) after accelerations?

  lately I have been trying to create a 2D platformer engine in C++ with Direct2D. The problem I am currently having is getting objects that are resting against each other to interact correctly after accelerations like gravity have been applied to them. Right now I can detect collisions and respond to them correctly (I think) and when objects collide they remember what other objects they're resting against so objects can be pushed by other objects (note that there is no bounce in any collisions so when objects collide they are guaranteed to become resting until something else happens). Every time the simulation advances, the acceleration for objects is applied to their velocities (for example vx += ax * t, where t is time elapsed since last advancement). After these accelerations are applied, I want to check if any objects that are resting against each other are moving at different speeds than their counterparts (as different objects can have different accelerations) and depending on that difference either unlink the two objects so they are no longer resting, or even out their velocities so they are moving at the same speed once again. I am having trouble creating an algorithm that can do this across many resting objects. Here's a diagram to help explain my problem

  I want to make a game where you have to run over a bunch of zombies with your car. When moving around, the zombies have a few things to take into consideration: When there's no player around they might just roam about randomly. And even when some other component dictates a specific direction, they should wobble to the left and right randomly (like drunk people). This implies a small, random, deviation in their movement. They should avoid static obstacles. When they see they are headed towards a wall, they should reorient themselves. They should avoid the car. They should try to predict where the car will be based on its velocity and try to move out of the way. When they can, they should try to get near the player. All these types of decisions they have to do seem like they should be implemented in different components. But how should I manage them? How can I give different components different weights that reflect the importance of each decision (in a given situation)? I would need some other component that acts as a manager, but do you have any tips on how I should implement it? Or maybe there's a better solution?...

• Do you think we will ever settle on a "standard" platform? [closed]

  The recent explosion of phone platforms has depressed me (slightly), and made me wonder if we will ever reach any kind of standard for presentation? I don't mean language or IDE. Different languages have different strengths and I can see that there may always be a need for disparity, although I do note that languages are merging somewhat in functionality, with traditional imperitive languages like C++ now supporting things like lambdas. What I'm really talking about is a common presentation mechanism. Before smart phones and tablets came along, the web seemed to be finally becoming a reasonable platform for presenting an application that was globally accessible, not just geographically, but by platform too. Sure there are still (sometimes infuriating) implementation differences and quirks, but if you wrote a decent site you knew it could be accessed on anything from a PC to a phone to a C64 running the right software. "Write Once Run Anywhere" seemed to finally be becoming a reality. However, in the last few years we've seen an explosion of mobile operating systems, and the ubiquitous "app". A good site is no longer enough, you need a native "app", and of course we have a sudden massive disparity in OS, language, and APIs needed to write them as each battles for supremecy. It's kind of weird how the cycle of popularity goes. Mainframes with terminals - thin client. PC - thick client. Web browser - thin client. Phone app - thick(ish) client. I just wonder if you think there will ever be a global standard for clients, or whether the "shiny and different" cycle will always continue along with the battle of the tech du jour.

• Algorithms for Data Redundancy and Failover for distributed storage system?

  I'm building a distributed storage system that works with different storage sizes. For instance, my storage devices have sizes of 50GB, 70GB, 150GB, 250GB, 1000GB, 5 storage systems in one system. My application will store any files to the storage system. Question: How can I build a distributed storage with the idea of data redundancy and fail-over to store documents, videos, any type of files at the same time ensuring that should one of any storage devices fail, there would be another copy of these files on another storage device. However, the concern is, 50GB of storage can only store this maximum number of files as compared to 70GB, 150GB etc. With one storage in mind, bringing 5 storage systems like a cloud storage, is there any logical way to distribute or store the files through my application? How do I ensure data redundancy through different storage sizes? Is there any algorithm to collate multiple blob files into a single file archive? What is the best solution for one cloud storage with multiple different storage sizes? I open this topic with the objective of discussing the best way to implement this idea, assuming simplicity, what are the issues of this implementation, performance measurements and discussion of the limitations.

• Combinatorial explosion of interfaces: How many is too many?

  I'm a relative newcomer to OOP, and I'm having a bit of trouble creating good designs when it comes to interfaces. Consider a class A with N public methods. There are a number of other classes, B, C, ..., each of which interacts with A in a different way, that is, accesses some subset (<= N) of A's methods. The maximum degree of encapsulation is achieved by implementing an interface of A for each other class, i.e. AInterfaceForB, AInterfaceForC, etc. However, if B, C, ... etc. also interact with A and with each other, then there will be a combinatorial explosion of interfaces (a maximum of n(n-1), to be precise), and the benefit of encapsulation becomes outweighed by a code-bloat. What is the best practice in this scenario? Is the whole idea of restricting access to a class's public functions in different ways for other different classes just silly altogether? One could imagine a language that explicitly allows for this sort of encapsulation (e.g. instead of declaring a function public, one could specify exactly which classes it is visible to); Since this is not a feature of C++, maybe it's misguided to try to do it through the back door with interaces?

• How to fundamentally approach creating a 'financial planner' application?

  I want to create a financial planning application (for personal use), for which the overall functionality will be this: User (me..) can create different 'scenarios'. Each scenario is configured with different incomings/outgoings. Scenarios can be 'explored' in a calendar format with projections taking into account tax, interest (on both debt and savings) and so on and so forth. My problem lies in how to fundamentally approach the project. I've considered: When creating incomings/outgoings for a script to apply them to each day in a 'days' table of a database, acting as a method of caching. This means that if I wanted to look at January 14th, 2074 there aren't thousands of cycles of calculations to run through and the result can just be pulled. Do each calculation dynamically, but again, I'm finding it hard to visuallize how I would handle different tax allowances (I'm based in the UK by the way), payrises and 'changes' to my incomings/outgoings. I've sat on this for a couple of days and am struggling to come up with an elegant approach to my problem. There may well be software out there that does what I'm looking to do (in fact I'm sure it is) but I would like to develop this myself for learning purposes, to be able to add it to my personal life 'toolset' and to allow me to expand on it in the future. However, the tables are different than using aspnet_regsql and the ASP.Net Configuration tool (WSAT) wasn’t connecting to the data I had (it was creating an App_Data/aspnet.mdf file, which I didn’t see right away). Points of Note The database tables are created in the SimpleMembershipInitializer class, when you first run your app using Entity Framework 5 migration functionality. The tables created are webpages_Membership, webpages_OAuthMembership, webpages_Roles, webpages_UsersInRoles, UserProfile. Web.config settings don’t seem to be needed.   Scott Hanselman on Universal Providers was also useful if not somewhat out dated.   I am building a brochure-ware website for a company that sells products all across the world. They need the site to ask the user what region they are in before using the site; there are 5 regions. This is because there are different products offered to different regions and each region may or may not want to customize their own content. However, at launch and likely forever, most of the pages will be the exact same minus what is listed in the footer and in the product selection menu. My question is how should I structure the sitemap for this site for best SEO? Should I be concerned with duplicate content penalties and/or cannibalizing the site's presence on the SERP? Some considerations: The client wants to be able to print links directly to regional specific content bypassing any prompt for the user to select a region (to ensure they land on the target page). The client cannot have a 'default' region so the user must have a region specified "Clean" urls are important, but there is wiggle room The client does not want each region to have its own domain There will be a link on the page to allow users to specify a different region The client is not concerned with localization ...at this time Some products are available in multiple regions A quick list of options I am considering: www.site.com/region/page region.site.com/page www.site.com/page?region (no cookie, pages require the parameter. • Representing a world in memory

  I'm attempting to write a chunk based map system for a game, where as the player moves around chunks are loaded/unloaded, so that the program doesn't run out of memory by having the whole map in memory. I have this part mostly working, however I've hit a wall regarding how to represent the contents of each chunk in memory because of my so far limited understanding of OOP languages. The design I have currently has a ChunkManager class that uses a .NET List type to store instances of Chunk classes. The "chunks" consist of "blocks". It's similar to a Minecraft style game. Inside the Chunk classes, I have some information such as the chunk's X/Y coordinate etc, and I also have a three dimensional array of Block objects. (Three dimensional because I need XYZ values) Here's the problem: The Block class has some basic properties, and I had planned on making different types of blocks inherit from this "base" class. So for example, I would have "StoneBlock", "WaterBlock" etc. So because I have blocks of many different types, I don't know how I would create an array with different object types in each cell. This is how I currently have the three dimensional array declared in my Chunk class: private Block[][][] ArrayOfBlocks; But obviously this will only accept Block objects, not any of the other classes that inherit from Block. How would I go about creating this? Or am I doing it completely wrong and there's a better way?

  I'm writing a roguelike where objects and floor can be made of different materials. For instance, let's say we can have a wooden chair, an iron chair, a golden chair, and so on. I've got an Object class (I know, the name is terrible), which is more or less using a composite pattern, and a Material class. Material have different important properties (noise, color...). For the time being, there are 5 different instances of materials, created at the initialization of the game. How would connect an instance of Object with one of the 5 instances of materials ? I see three simple solutions : Using a pointer. Simple and brutal. Using an integer material-id, then get the materials out of a table when engine manipulates the object for various purposes (display, attack analysis, etc.). Not very beautiful, I think, and not very flexible. Using an integer material-id, then get the materials out of a std::map. A bit more flexible, but still not perfect. Do you see other possibilities ? If not, what would you choose (and why) ? Thanks in advance !

• Using tslib (touchscreen input) with DirectFB on embedded system (gumstix overo)

  I'm attempting to use tslib with DirectFB on the gumstix Overo. Everything seems to be compiled correctly, as when DirectFB starts up, I get messages saying "Started 'tslib Input' ... DirectFB/Input: tslib touchscreen 0 0.1 (tslib)" etc. However, I haven't been able to find any example code showing how one reads the X-Y coordinates of a touchscreen press. Is there any example code out there to initialize the touchscreen and return the coordinates of a touchscreen press? Thanks in advance, Ben

• How does this ajax call persist DOM changes in the browser cache?

  For the purpose of the question I need to create a simple fictitious scenario. I have the following trivial page with one link, call it page A: <a class="red-anchor" onclick="change_color(event);" href="http://mysite.com/b/">B</a> With the associated Javascript function: function change_color(e) { var event = e || window.event; var link = event.target; link.className = "green-anchor"; } And I have the appropriate CSS to make the anchor red or green based on the classname. This is working. That is, when I click the anchor it changes color from red to green, which is briefly visible before the browser loads page B. But if I then use the BACK button to return to page A I get different behavior in different browsers. In Safari, the anchor is still green (desired behavior) In Firefox it reverts to red I imagine that Safari is somehow updating its cached version of the page, whereas Firefox isn't. So my first question is: is there any way to get FF to update the cached page, or is something else happening here? Secondly: I have a different implementation where I use an ajax call. In this I set the class of the anchor using a session variable, something like... <a class="<?php echo $_SESSION["color"]; ?>" ...[snip]... >B</a> And the javascript function makes an additional ajax call that changes the "color" session variable. In this case both Safari and Firefox work as expected. When going back from B to A the color is still green. But I can't for the life of me figure out why it should be different to the non-ajax case. I have tried many different permutations and for it to work on FF the "color" session variable MUST change (i.e. the ajax call itself is not somehow reloading the cache). But on coming BACK, the page is being reloaded from the cache (verified in Firebug), so how is the page even accessing this session variable if it isn't reprocessing the page and running that fragment of php in the anchor? I figure there must be something fundamental here that I am not understanding. Any insight would be much appreciated.

• activeX component in axapta

  hi folks, i'm struggling with an .net activeX i try to use in ms axapta 2009. using this component on my local machine where it was compiled, it's working quite fine. it can be added as activeX element on a form, the methods and events are listed in the axapta-activeX-explorer and i can interact with it without any problems. but trying to distribute the dll to other clients isn't working as intended. the registration of the dll via regasm /codebase /tlb works properly - getting the message, registration was successful. the component is also listed when selecting an activeX-element to add in ax, but neither functions nor properties are listed. and launching the form results in an errormessage - activeX component CLSID ... not found on system, not installed. the classID is indeed the one, defined in .net. strange things happen, having a look on the task-manager. the activeX-component itself is just a wrapper to interact with a com-application. when launching the ax-form with the not working and _not_installed_!! activeX-thing, the taskmanager shows a new process of the com-application, which is instanciated by the activeX :/ things i tried: using different versions of regasm, eg \Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727 ; C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727 using new GUIDs in .net, prior removing the old ones from the registry compiling, using different versions of the .net framework doing registration via regasm, regasm /codebase, regasm /codebase /tlb, using a visual-studio-setup running registration via command-line as administrator running setup as administrator running even ax as administrator on client-machine moving dll to a different folder followed by new registration ( windows/system32; ax/client/bin ) installing to GAC ( gacutil /i ) different project-options in visual studio ( COM-Visibility; register for COM-Interop; different targetPlatform ) hoped for the fact, that compiling in visual studio with register for COM-Interop option enabled does something more than just the regasm-registration, i used a registry-monitor-microsoft-tool for logging the registry-activity which happend during compilation. using these logs to create all registry-entries on the target-client in addition didn't work either. any hints or help would be so much appreciated! this thing is blocking me for days now :(

Many rows later... ... 185352 03-09-2012 Apple Ian Washers Tap Ltd 600 £80 I need to calculate a large set of targets from table containing values different types, target table is under my control and so far is like: TargetID Year Month Salesperson Target_Type Quantity 1 2012 7 Ian 1 6000 2 2012 8 James 2 2000 3 2012 9 Ian 2 6500 At present I am working out target types using a view of the first table which has a lot of extra columns: SELECT YEAR(Date) , MONTH(Date) , Salesperson , Quantity , CASE WHEN Manufacturer IN ('Tap Ltd','Hats Inc') AND Product_Type = 'Hats' THEN True ELSE False END AS IsType1 , CASE WHEN Manufacturer = 'Hats Inc' AND Product_Type IN ('Hats','Coats') THEN True ELSE False END AS IsType2 ... ... , CASE WHEN Manufacturer IN ('Tap Ltd','Hats Inc') AND Product_Type = 'Hats' THEN True ELSE False END AS IsType24 , CASE WHEN Manufacturer IN ('Tap Ltd','Hats Inc') AND Product_Type = 'Hats' THEN True ELSE False END AS IsType25 FROM SalesTable WHERE [some stuff here] This is horrible to read/debug and I hate it!! I've tried a few different ways of simplifying this but have been unable to get it to work. The closest I have come is to have a third table holding the definition of the types with the values for each field and the type number, this can be joined to the tables to give me the full values but I can't work out a way to cope with multiple values for each field. Finally the question: Is there a standard way this can be done or an easier/neater method other than one column for each type of target? I know this is a complex problem so if anything is unclear please let me know. Edit - What I need to get: At the very end of the process I need to have targets displayed with actual sales: Type Year Month Salesperson TargetQty ActualQty 2 2012 8 James 2000 2809 2 2012 9 Ian 6500 6251 Each row of the sales table could potentially satisfy 8 of the types. Some more points: I have 5 different columns that need to be defined against the targets (or set to NULL to include any value) I have between 30 and 40 different types that need to be defined, several of the columns could contain as many as 10 different values For point 2, if I am using a row for each permutation of values, 2 columns with 10 values each would give me 100 rows for each sales person for each month which is a lot but if this is the only way to define multiple values I will have to do this.   Hi guys, I'm working on this site - http://dev.chriscurddesign.co.uk/mayday It works in everything other than IE7 and IE8 in compatibility mode (don't care about IE6), where the vacancies lists on the right aren't hidden correctly by their parent overflow property. I have been pulling my hair out trying to get to the bottom of this, its driving me up the wall, anyone got any ideas whatsoever? • Basic regexp help

  I am new to programming PHP and am trying to validate a field in a form. The field if for a RAL color code and so would look something like : RAL 1001. so the letters RAL and then 4 numbers. Can someone help me set them into a regular expression to validate them. i have tried this with no success: $string_exp = "/^[RAL][0-9 .-]+$/i"; What can I say but sorry for being a complete NOOB at PHP.
