• Should security updates 'always' be installed?

  We are a small shop, no real sysadmin. So developers (Java EE) also try to maintain Ubuntu server 12.0.4. When I login a terminal and I see messages like: 6 packages can be updated. 6 updates are security updates. Should all security updates always be installed? can some be ignored? Should these be acted upon immediately? Or one could wait for 2:00 AM coming Sunday? Is there a way to know a 'critical' update? Is there a good sysadmin for dummies resource I should be reading?

• Can't boot Ubuntu after install Ubuntu

  I have downloaded Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32 bit, burnt it on DVD and tried to install on my PC. My PC running in Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit mounted on C: drive. Now I want install Ubuntu along with my Windows 7. When I boot Ubuntu through CD, It boots and Ubuntu install window opens. Ask "Try Ubuntu" and "Install Ubuntu". I go on "Install Ubuntu". Then I go on install Ubuntu with Windows (First Option) - install. It shows some blank screen with some lines, and shows "Please Remove installation media and close tray and press enter". Then PC restarts and Run Windows 7 same as before normally. But Ubuntu is not installed. How to solve this problem and install Ubuntu on my PC properly? Note: I am a Android Developer. So I need to install Ubuntu for my Android Development purpose.

• Kernel Panic: Not booting after upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04

  I upgraded from 10.04 to 12.04LTS. Upgrade went fine, even restarted couple of times. Then the next day while booting into Ubuntu, after the grub, it gave the error Kernel panic : not syncing vfs unable to mount root fs on unknown block (0,0). I then booted into live CD and tried the following commands, based on other posts on this forum: sudo fdisk -l As the 8 was on /dev/sda1, sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev Now I got the message: mount: mount point /mnt/dev does not exist Then tried sudo mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc Again got the message: mount point point /mnt/proc does not exist. then tried sudo chroot /mnt Got message: chroot: failed to run comman '/bin/bash': No such file or directory Now have no clue what to do next. Unable to boot into Ubuntu. Please help. Jitesh

• How to change Ubuntu Studio from XFCE to Gnome?

  I have 12.04 Ubuntu Studio Installed at the moment. On removing a application called Terminal Emulator, I accidentally removed xfce too. As I am not very fond of xfce, I am OK with it as I can change the session to gnome 3 upon login. But session runs with occasional glitches. My question is how to remove xfce completely and turn it into pure gnome system. I am aware of the way to do apt-get install ubuntu-desktop But, this is going to change the ubuntu studio, I dont want that. I just want to change my ubuntu studio to pure gnome without uninstalling ubuntu-desktop. i.e. Something like ubuntustudio-12.04-gnome build. I've looked at this Q&A: How to remove xubuntu? The accepted answer removes some vital software from Ubuntu Studio such as Gimp, including ubuntustudio-desktop at the end.

• Ubuntu 11.04 Broadcom BCM4312 Not Working

  I have a HP MINI 210-1010NR and just installed Ubuntu 11.04 and I can't get my wireless to work.I have checked through multiple Q&A's throughout this FAQ and tried them all. When I go over the wireless thing at the top it says "Wireless Networks device not ready(firmware missing)." Okay, now here is my ~$ lspci -vvnn | grep 14e4 02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY [14e4:4315] (rev 01) Also, when I try to open additional drivers it says that "Downloading package indexes failed, please check your network status."

  I installed 12.04 in my system. While trying to install Chromium, I get the following error: Package dependencies cannot be resolved This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable. Furthermore there could be a conflict between software packages which are not allowed to be installed at the same time. • Firefox zombie process problem

  When I start Firefox a Firefox zombie process starts sometimes (not always) and then goes away after a few seconds (stays sometimes until firefox is closed). This problem occurs with four computers (2 laptops and 2 desktops running ubuntu 10.04, 11.10, precise beta 1 and beta 2) I also have this same problem with other distros like Fedora 16, Linux mint 12, Debian 6 and Arch Linux. Thunderbird is also affected by this zombie process problem. Firefox safe mode does NOT help! Can someone help me to fix this problem?   First of all I would like to inform you that I saw a question similar to mine but the error was different, so here's my problem... I have an external HD samsung s2 model of 500GB and a day to day just stopped working, tried in other systems (windows and mac) however are not recognized.   Is anyone at Microsoft listening to the SPAM problem here on Weblogs.asp.net? My “ Can anyone do anything about the spam here on weblogs.asp.net? ” post from October got over 12 spam comments posted to it in the past 24 hours. I have comments all moderated, but that just means I have a crapload of work to do each time people comment. Also, when you click on a link from a comment notification email you are taken to an insecure site warning due to an invalid SSL Cert. We really just need some updates...(read more)

• I prefer C/C++ over Unity and other tools: is it such a big downer for a game developper ?

  We have a big game project on Unity at school on which we are 12 to work on. My teacher seems to be convinced it's an important tool to teach students, since it makes students look from the high level to the lower level. I can understand his view, and I'm wondering: Is unity such an important engine in game developping companies ? Are there a lot of companies using it because they can't afford to use something else ? He is talking like Unity is a big player in game making, but I only see it fit small indie game companies who want to do a game as fast as possible. Do you think Unity is that much important in the industry ? Does it endangers the value of C++ skills ? It's not that I don't like Unity, it's just that I don't learn nothing with it, I prefer to achieve little steps with Ogre or SFML instead. Also, we also have C++ practice exercises, but those are just practice with theory, nothing much.

Is there a Trash folder in Ubuntu Server? What could be happening?
