• Meet Windows Azure Sweden &amp; SWAG Sommeravslutning

  The Meet Windows Azure event last week saw some great announcements about the current and future developments on the Windows Azure platform. Microsoft Sweden will be hosting an event at their offices that will run through these releases and demo some of the new technologies. It will be a great chance to see the new capabilities in action, and chat to Microsoft Evangelists, MVPs and other developers about the future of the platform. This will also be the last Sweden Windows Azure Group (SWAG) meeting before the summer break, so there will be food, drinks, and the chance of some “SWAG”. We will be back in force after the summer, and have a number of great events planned for the rest of the year.   Last year I started working with a team on our first major web project (We, the Pixels). I believe the idea is very solid, but it has a hard requirement for a group of people being on the site for the randomly scheduled events. We are having problems getting people to come and stay for these events. What is the proper marketing approach needed to bring people to the site for these events? We have recently done the following in an attempt to fix the problem: Added email notification of new events being created Added privileges based on rank Added text throughout the site encouraging setting up the events in the future so other users can have time see that it exists. Gotten involved in with other communities that would find the site interesting in order to promote (market) the site Advertised using Google Adwords Is there an standard marketing approach for such a case as this?

• Using EUSM to manage EUS mappings in OUD

  EUSM is a command line tool that can be used to manage the EUS settings starting with the 11.1 release of Oracle. In the 11.1 release the tool is not yet documented in the Oracle EUS documentation, but this is planned for a coming release. The same commands used by EUSM can be performed from the Database Console GUI or from Grid Control*. For more details, search for the document ID 1085065.1 on OTN. The examples below don't include all the EUSM options, only the options that are used by EUS. EUSM is user friendly and intuitive. • Sharing samba-folder with root access

  Hi everyone, I have a staging server in my network running Ubuntu server 10.10, being my main development area. As I need to access the files in the Apache root from other computers in the network, I have setup samba with the following settings: [www] comment = Apache root www path = /var/www writable = yes force user = root force group = root On the host computer, running Ubuntu 10.10 desktop, I am trying to mount the drive with a bash file looking like below: #!/bin/bash sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.1.5/www /media/www/ -o username=myusername,password=mypassword,rw,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 What happens is that I get mount error(13): Permission denied Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) thrown in my face whilst trying to execute the mount. I've done exactly the same, with exactly the same smb.conf & mount-bash file on another computer in my network, but this just wont work. What am I doing wrong? I am running out of ideas.

• Simple solution now to a problem from 8 years ago. Use SQL windowing function

We had to find the top 5 donor per month and send out some awards. The SQL we came up with was clunky and had lots of limitation (can only do one year at a time), then switch the where clause and go again. Fast forward 8 years, I got a similar problem where we had to find the top 3 combination of 2 fields for every single day. And the solution is this elegant: SELECT CAST(eff_dt AS DATE) AS "RecordDate" , status_cd , nbr , COUNT(*) AS occurance , ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY CAST(eff_dt AS DATE) ORDER BY COUNT(*) DESC) RowNum FROM table1 WHERE RowNum < 4 GROUP BY CAST(eff_dt AS DATE) , status_cd , nbr If only I had this 8 years ago. :) Life is good now!

• Web stalker has purchased a domain name that uses my personal name, web page is defamatory [closed]

  We have been unsuccessful in persuading a stalker's website host to release the domain name he purchased which is my own personal name, e.g., PERSONALNAME.com. You will find my name below in the signature area. Look for yourself. On the one page that this domain name leades to is dreadful and defamatory material. No attorney has felt it worth their time to chase this issue down, and we cannot afford to go to a national or international dispute resolution group to bring this issue to WHOIS. Worse, the stalker is amoral and a psychopath: he would just love the attention. We've even consider trying to find someone to illegally hack into the webpage to at least redirect the domain pointers to my own professional website. This issue has continued now for two years and is affecting my professional reputations as potential clients have looked for me online. Is there any remedy? Your help and advice would be greatly welcomed.

  Recently I have been having a lot of fun building a competition Slice of Kevin intended in part to teach people about Web Slices in New Zealand. The competition has been very successful and has created a loyal group of users. Since launch 2 months ago we have had 26,843 users of the slice. Each of those users have spent on average 4.1 hrs each engaged inside the web slice over that time. • Alternative to Firefox's Tab Groups feature for Chromium/Chrome

  Firefox keeps crashing the whole time on my Lubuntu 12.04 since version 12, I don't know why, I am running it on a Pentium IV desktop so might be CPU shortage, however I use the same set of extensions and configurations that I have on Windows' Firefox and it rarely crashes, runs smoothly and besides on Windows it can handle much more tabs opened before some freeze actually happens. Chromium is working better so far on Lubuntu, but I really do miss the Tab Groups Firefox feature, which is great to group tabs and organize them, it really is a boost on my productivity. Are you aware of any add-on which is similar for Chrome/Chromium? I've searched around on Chrome's Web Store but no luck at the moment.

• Building dynamic bounding box hierachies.

  I've been reading about collision detection and I saw that the first part was a coarse detection which generates possible contacts using bounding box hierarchies. I understand the concept of splitting up your objects in groups, to speed up the detection phase, but I'm a little confused on how do you actually build the hierachy, more so on what criteria is used to group them together. Do I iterate through all the objects in the scene, and check the distance between them to see where they should be inserted in the tree? Do you know some resources that may shed some light on this topic for me?

  What's a proper way of building a Winform app that has multiple 'screens'? For example, I'm trying to write a small backup program (mainly for giggles), and I've been dumping controls and containers onto the form. I'm using panels and group boxes to separate out the different screens (eg: I'm using a panel to hold all of the controls for the "Settings" window, and another panel to show all the current backups that have been set up). Well, my form.cs file ballooned into a massive amount of code, and I feel like I'm doing something wrong. I can hardly find anything in the file, and I'm ready to start over. This project was just for me to expand my knowledge of C# and .NET, so starting a new project is not a huge deal.

• Can I use a desktop as a network server?

  Pardon me if I'm asking the wrong question. But I am a newbie in networking and I'm not sure what direction to go on this. I have just setup an Ubuntu Desktop. I am planning to convert it to a network server without losing the GUI interface (again, I'm a newbie) and use it to manage and monitor user access to a network with a small number of network terminals all running on Windows. My purpose is to use the new server to filter sites accessed by each terminals, monitor sites being visited by employees and grant access to both group and user-specific folders based on their IP address. Is this possible? What server software do I need to install? How do I structure the hardware? (I have a router, a hub, the Ubuntu server and the network terminals) How do I assign privileges to users and monitor them at the same time? Thank you in advance for your replies.

• Huge Need for Mentoring

  I see a need for a product/network that provides meaningful mentoring. I personally am in need of a mentor. I have one currently but he moved out of state so I don't have daily contact anymore. I see many young people who are in need of mentors and I have mentored some of them. I also see many senior level people who are growing stale and need mentoring. My idea is for some type of service for connecting people needed mentoring with those willing to be mentors. A mentor can mentor a single individual or a group. I think people would be willing to pay a good mentor especially if they are recommended by peers.

• How to setup whole-disk encryption with dual boot on a MacBook Pro (generation 9,2 with 12.04)

  I can install Ubuntu 12.04 on the MacBook when using the "noapic" kernel boot option, using the alternate amd64+mac image (from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04/release/ ). But after installation the screen turn sblack after trying to boot "Windows" (as named in the boot menu that shows up when holding Option/Alt during startup). I want to use whole-disk encryption and given that only one free partition is available, I have setup LVM to do so: - vg0 contains bootlv and cryptlv - in cryptlv I have setup encryption with another LVM volume group (vg1, which holds swaplv, rootlv and homelv) I have not installed Grub during installation (because I was not sure about the partition) and when trying to install it later on /dev/sda4 (which contains the outer LVM) it complained that it could not determine the file system, and --force did not help either. The black screen / behavior looks similar to starting the installer without enabling the noapic option.
