  • The Endeca UI Design Pattern Library Returns

    I'm happy to announce that the Endeca UI Design Pattern Library - now titled the Endeca Discovery Pattern Library - is once again providing guidance and good practices on the design of discovery experiences.  Launched publicly in 2010 following several years of internal development and usage, the Endeca Pattern Library is a unique and valued source of industry-leading perspective on discovery - something I've come to appreciate directly through  fielding the consistent stream of inquiries about the library's status, and requests for its rapid return to public availability. Restoring the library as a public resource is only the first step!  For the next stage of the library's evolution, we plan to increase the scope of the guidance it offers beyond user interface design to the broader topic of discovery.  This could include patterns for architecture at the systems, user experience, and business levels; information and process models; analytical method and activity patterns for conducting discovery; and organizational and resource patterns for provisioning discovery capability in different settings.  We'd like guidance from the community on the kinds of patterns that are most valuable - so make sure to let us know. And we're also considering ways to increase the number of patterns the library offers, possibly by expanding the set of contributors and the authoring mechanisms.   • Making WatiN Wait for JQuery document.Ready() Functions to Complete

    WatiN's DomContainer.WaitForComplete() method pauses test execution until the DOM has finished loading, but if your page has functions registered with JQuery's ready() function, you'll probably want to wait for those to finish executing before testing it. Here's a WatiN extension method which pauses test execution until that happens. JQuery (as far as I can see) doesn't provide an event or other way of being notified of when it's finished running your ready() functions, so you have to get around it another way. Luckily, because ready() executes the functions it's given in the order they're registered, you can simply register another one to add a 'marker' div to the page, and tell WatiN to wait for that div to exist. WaitUntilExistsOrFail() is another WatiN extension method I've written (I've ended up writing really quite a lot of them) which waits for the element on which it is invoked to exist, and uses Assert.Fail() to fail the test with the given message if it doesn't exist within the specified number of seconds.     Blockquote Here is an extract from item 56 of the book "C++ Gotchas": It's not uncommon to see a simple initialization of a Y object written any of three different ways, as if they were equivalent. Y a( 1066 ); Y b = Y(1066); Y c = 1066; In point of fact, all three of these initializations will probably result in the same object code being generated, but they're not equivalent. The initialization of a is known as a direct initialization, and it does precisely what one might expect. The initialization is accomplished through a direct invocation of Y::Y(int). The initializations of b and c are more complex. In fact, they're too complex. These are both copy initializations. In the case of the initialization of b, we're requesting the creation of an anonymous temporary of type Y, initialized with the value 1066. We then use this anonymous temporary as a parameter to the copy constructor for class Y to initialize b. Finally, we call the destructor for the anonymous temporary. To test this, I did a simple class with a data member (program attached at the end) and the results were surprising. It seems that for the case of b, the object was constructed by the copy constructor rather than as suggested in the book. Does anybody know if the language standard has changed or is this simply an optimisation feature of the compiler? I was using Visual Studio 2008.   • singleton vs factory?

    i've got 3 Log classes that all implements iLog interface: DatabaseLog FileLog ScreenLog there can only be one instance of them. initially i though of using single pattern for each class but then i thought why not use a factory for instantiation instead, cause then i wont have to create single pattern for each one of them and for all future Log classes. and maybe someone would want them as multiple objects in the future. so my questions is: should i use factory or singleton pattern here?

I am using this in my function.php file: if (function_exists('register_sidebar')) register_sidebar(array('name'='Church Address', 'before_widget' = '', 'after_widget' = '', 'before_title' = '', 'after_title' = '', )); but I need to remove the div from around the text widget's body. Is there some way to do this?

  • Factory Girl sequence fails under autospec

    I have this Factory: Factory.define :email_address do |e| e.sequence(:address) { |n| "factory_#{n}@example.com" } e.validated true end When I run my specs with rake spec, it works fine. When I run autospec, it fails right away, claiming that the email address is being used twice in two different objects (there is a validation which restricts this). Why is it behaving differently under autospec? Thanks, John

  • Adding a valuetype to IDL, compile and it fails with "No factory found"

    I can't figure out why the client keeps complaining about the not finding the factory method. I've tried the IDL with and without the "factory" keyword and that didn't change the behavior. The SDMGeoVT IDL matches other objects used (which run successfully). The SDMGeoVT classes generated match other generated classes in regards to inheritance and methods. The IDL is as follows; The idlj compiler runs w/o error. I implement the function on the server and I see the server code run and serialize the object over the wire (the server code runs fine). The client bombs with the following stack trace (the first couple of lines is from the jacORB library). I've created a small app just to compile and test the code (ArrayClient & ArrayServer). The base app (from the jacORB demo) works fine.     I've got a button which when clicked copies and appends the text from a GtkEntry widget into a GtkTextView widget. (This code is a modified version of an example found in the "The Text View Widget" chapter of Foundations of GTK+ Development.) I'm looking to insert a newline character before the text which gets copied and appended, such that each line of text will be on its own line in the GtkTextView widget. How would I do this? I'm brand new to GTK+.     I am painting a widget and I want to optimize the process. Basically i will be sliding the image in the x direction and I only want to fill the newly exposed area. Is there a way to translate the pixels of a widget without calling update or using paintevent? I know of pixmaps and such but I am wondering If I can for example draw a pixmap once and then translate what I have drawn without having to paint anything else or draw pixmaps anymore.

  • Generic transparent Qt widget that can catch clicks?

    I've figured out how to use QPainter to draw rectangles. Now I want to have a drawing area where if the user clicks, a 1x1 rectangle is drawn where the mouse pointer is. To accomplish this, I assume I need a transparent Qt widget that supports the clicked() signal. How do I make such a transparent widget? Or is there something else I can use? Perhaps I can only use the window's clicked() signal?

    I have a drop down menu that is coded in HTML, CSS, and jQuery and it works fine in Firefox and IE but not in Safari, and also not in Firefox on Mac. The drop down displays inline as opposed to list-item for the drop down in Safari.
