• Using a buffalo wl12-pci-g54s on Debian Linux

  I have a buffalo wl12-pci-g54s wireless card that I want to install in my PC running Debian. I need this so I can move the server to a better location in another room. So, is there an easy way to do this? Some package that I can install and get up and running? Other instructions that I found online have been confusing. • Weird routing problems with VPN

  In our VPN setup I have to add a route to my routing table like this: route add 1.2.3.0 mask 255.255.255.0 172.16.1.1 -p Our internal addresses 1.2.3.x then use 172.16.1.1 as their gateway and both my local internet and work VPN can work at the same time. However, when I disconnect from VPN and reconnect again, I can't ping our servers even though the connection status is "Connected". When I do route print my previously added route is listed but it doesn't seem to work. So I try to execute that 'route add' command again and as expected, it tells me that The route addition failed: The object already exists. But - and that's the point - when I now try to ping our servers again, everything works! So every time, I have to execute this route add command that will fail but fix the issue at the same time. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong? My PC is Windows 7 x64, I am Administrator, UAC is enabled and the command prompt is run with elevated privileges.

  In situations where the PC has no CD drive and operating a guest account with limited privileges, how to install an anti-virus tool? Malware is not permitting to open any anti-virus vendor's site and also blocking all sites opened via Google that contain the term "online scan". I somehow managed to download through mirror links with a Download Manager as the browser's download was blocked by the malware. But the problem didn't end there. After I downloaded the anti-virus tool, it failed to install because it needed administrative rights. The user didn't know the administrator password. I tried via command line with runas, but it also asks for the administrator password. The OS is Windows XP. How to deal with these type of malwares if there is a scenario that CD drive is not there only Internet is there?

• Skydrive does not synchronize with one device but synchronizes successfully with another one.

  I have an Outlook id. I also have Skydrive installed on my personal laptop (Windows 7 x64). The folders and files synchronize successfully. Today, I installed Skydrive on my office PC and logged in with the same id as above but it does not synchronize any of my folders or files, other than the default ones. • Ports do not open after rules appended in iptables

  I have a server that I am trying to setup for OpenVPN. I have followed all the steps, but I see that when I try to connect to it in Windows, it doesn't allow me, it just hangs on connecting, so I did a nmap scan and I see that port 1194 is not open so naturally I append the rule to open 1194 with: iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 1194 -j ACCEPT followed by service iptables save and service iptables restart which all executed successfully. Then I try again, but it doesn't work and another nmap scan says that port 1194 is closed. • How to make use of movie events imported by imovie 09 from a DVR

  I have imported about 100 clips of video from my DVR using imovie 09 and they are all saved under movie events folder, this is ok. The problem is all the movie events files are not in standard formats, they are in some 'Apple Intermediate Format' only Quicktime and iMovie recoginize and play. My problem is I simply want to give my 100 clips of video to someone using PC and this intermediate format produced by imovie is not playable or convertable by anything I have found. Now the only option for me seems to be creating a project in iMovie and drag all the clips into the project and then export these 100 clips into a single standard file, but iMovie doesn't even let me conveninent do that, I can only click at some clip, select all, drag into the project, and repeat for 100 more times, Is there a alternative way I can do so? (or use Quicktime player to convert video formats one by one). Thanks

• Need to get a file written to a floppy.

  I asked this question over on SO. I have tried dd if=kernel.sys of=/dev/fd0 bs=512 seek=1 to get this file to write to the floppy. It is a kernel shell that must be written to the sector immediately following the bootsector of a disk to boot the PC. No matter what I've tried, for some reason, kernel.sys is not writing to the floppy. I know the bootstrap loader is being written and executed. However, it cannot find the kernel to load the shell. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong? I mean, really, how is it so difficult to get this file written to a floppy? OpenSUSE 11.2

  I've been running Windows XP mode on my Windows 7 Laptop for a while now and I've got my VM set up just how I like it. I am switchign laptops due to an intermittent hardware failure. Is it possible to transfer my Windows XP mode VM to my new laptop? I know it's just a Windows Virtual PC VM, how would I go about transferring it if this is possible? Will the Fact that I'm moving from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 7 Pro make a difference? AFAIK they both support Windows XP Mode.

• TightVNC grey screen?

  I'm trying to help my mom remotely with some PC problems. She's not too computer savvy, so to keep the firewall stuff on my side of things, I tried to use a reverse VNC connection: On my machine, I set up TightVNC client in listening mode. I also opened TCP port 5500 on my router and firewall, and checked it using http://canyouseeme.org/. On her machine, I (instructed her to) set up TightVNC server, and connect to my machine's IP ('Add New Client...'). Both machines run Windows XP & TightVNC 1.3.10. The problem: When she tries to connect, a TightVNC window with grey background pops up on my machine, but I never get to see the remote desktop. It just remains grey. However, it seems that I control the mouse on the remote side (she says it's moving). I tried to reverse-connect from another machine on my LAN and it works without a problem. Any idea what the problem could be?

  I have a new problem with a Dell Dimension 2400 PC. Until yesterday or the day before, it was working fine, but today when I press the power button the light on the power button turns yellow instead of green, the fan behind the processor increases speed until it sounds like a jet engine, and the computer does not boot up. I cleaned out the dust in the computer so that is not the problem. Also, the fan was blowing cold air. Do any of you know what might be causing this and how I might be able to fix it?

• Unable to make my bios see my sata hdd

  I know there are many question about that, but I tried everything and I'm still not able to make my bios see my sata2 hdd. I've got a QDI motherbord with no sata port; only 2 ide ports. I had an old ide hdd, now i've removed it and bought a sata2 hdd. Since my pc has no sata slots i bouth a ide-to-sata adapter. So, i don't have any os installed on the new drive, and the old drive is removed. My problem is that I'm unable to see my hdd on bios. I suppose that my bios, since it's an old version, doesn't have sata drivers, but I don't know if I must install it and also I dont know how to do it. Anyone can help me?

  I have Windows 7 Professional hosting Ubuntu inside VirtualBox for my development machine. To test my site, I run Internet Explorer and hit my Ubuntu box. This works great for Internet Explorer 8, the default browser on this Windows machine. I also want to run another VM with a copy of Windows XP with Internet Explorer 6 or Internet Explorer 7. Where can I download ISO image files of old copies of Windows XP? I've looked in Internet Explorer Application Compatibility VPC Image and these only run in Virtual PC/XP Mode which won't run while VirtualBox is running. If I have to run VirtualBox (can't work without Ubuntu running the site), is there any way to test Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, and Internet Explorer 8 from the same Windows 7 machine?

So: What's the big deal with 4K sectors? Is it marketing hype, or a real advantage? Why should somebody building a new PC care, or not, about 4K sectors? Why is this transition taking place now? • NAS disk - problem with accessing SAMBA

  Hello I have a NAS disk running on some version of Linux. The disk is located in local network (5 PC running XP or Vista, all connected to Linksys Router). I have problems accessing NAS resources through SAMBA. The 1st issue is that the NAS is not accessible through hostname (even if it is configured), 2nd point is that it is mostly not accessible through IP manner (\IP_OF_NAS). Rest of services (FTP, HTTP access) works flawlessly. I connected the NAS to my home network (only 1 WinXP and Linsys router) and the NAS is working fine - SAMBA access together with hostname recognition works perfectly. I wonder this is an issue with WINS? Could anybody help? Regards

• Windows Updates - Does Not Install, how can I remove it

  Everytime I shutdown my Windows XP, it comes up with the following screen which says Turn Off with Installing Updates (Of course, it also gives me an option as follows, "Click here to turn off without installing updates.") When I do a normal shutdown asking it to "Install Updates and Turn It Off", it doesn't actually install the updates. Each subsequent time I try to shut down the PC, it still prompts me to "Turn Off with Installing Updates". I managed to find out that the install was this: Installing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706) update 1 of 1 .... When I click on the Installing Updates icon (the yellow icon, that appears on the task bar near the clock), and install it, it tries to install but fails: Why is this install alone failing? Secondly, if it's not possible to ascertain why the installation is failing, can I at least ensure that it's removed from the list of possible installs so that each time it does not ask me to install it?

  Does anyone have a solution (that doesn't involve editing the hosts file) to block a particular URL from FireFox? Basic back story is that I'm trying to discipline myself. I'm spending FAR too much time over at Server Fault that I want to genuinely block the site from my work PC so that every time I find myself flicking to it during work time I can't see it, but I'd like to be able to disable it during my lunch break. (So I only spend 40 minutes a day there, rather than 4 hours). That said I don't want to block it at the router, nor for anyone else.

  I have a HP Pavilion TX2000 tablet PC with me with windows 7 OS running on it. I used to access the Internet using my D-Link DIR 615 wireless adapter on the tablet and it used to work quite fine until one day, when I hibernated my Windows 7, the wireless went off and the problem seems to persist even after my hard efforts to clear it. I checked if the router works fine, and yes it did as my iPod was still catching wireless signals on the other hand, when I checked mu device manager, I realized that I now had no wireless driver. I checked on HP's website for one, but ironically even they didn't have wireless drivers meant for my tablet for Windows 7. Please help me find a solution to this problem.   Hello everyone, I'm here with some Vista-trouble. After a cigarette-break I returned to my desk to find my PC with a black screen, and after failing to wake it up did a forced restart. I haven't been installing any hardware or software for quite a while. Ever since, Vista gets stuck on the animated 'Microsoft Corporation' progress bar with the animation still running and no hard disk activity. With an F8 and safe-mode + prompt I saw that the boot gets stuck at crcdisk.sys. I'm running Vista64 SP1. What could the problem be? Any advice?

• Stuck in power saving mode

  I've got an LG monitor I tried attaching to my laptop for dual monitor goodness and it worked fine but when I tried attaching it back to the desktop it stuck in "Power Saving mode" and wouldn't go away. The CPU's starting up but nothing happens with the monitor. I try attaching it back to the laptop and it works fine again. I don't understand what could have happened. For reference, the laptop I'm using is an HP laptop with nVidia GT240M video card running on an i7 processor while the desktop runs on a Dual Core processor with an nVidia 9400GT video card. I've never had problems like these with other monitors I've attached my pc to. Anyone got any ideas?

• Wireless Network Disappearing From Available Networks (Windows 7)

  I have been using Windows 7 with a BT Voyager wireless adapter to connect to my home wireless network for around the last 6 months or so and until recently have experienced no problems. However, over the last couple of days Windows has been unable to connect to the network and the network name is no longer visible in the list of available wireless networks. The only way I have got round the problem is to reboot the NetGear router and to change the SSID to a network name which has not already been used. I do not believe the problem is with the router as my mobile phone can connect to it without any problems. The BT Voyager wireless adapter detects all other available networks so I presume this is a Windows 7 issue as it seems to occur when the PC is rebooted. This problen has happened twice in the last 2 days and is becoming extremely annoying. Does anyone have any suggestions?
