  We have a .net 3.5 web app that consumes third party web services. The proxy was created by adding a web reference to their wsdl. This proxy is not compiled. Our error logging is picking up frequent but intermittent exceptions: An exception of type 'System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHeaderException' occurred and was caught If I follow the url to the page that generated the exception, I can't recreate it. Originally there was a route issue, which was resolved. We're still getting the inner exception with socket errors. We had MS support involved today, and they looked at some traces and network captures. The web service host does round-robin DNS, and they may be responding on a different IP address for the syn syn/ack from one ip, and the next from a different ip. This is not good. This is likely quite specific to our situation, but perhaps it applies to others as well. Microsoft Network Monitor and an application trace got us the information we needed.

• ANY way to consolidate this code?

  I am building a PHP registration form which takes the following fields for up to 20 athletes: First Name Middle Initial Last Name Federation Number Address City State Zip DOB SSN Phone Email I am only through 7 of the fields for each fighter and my php file is very large (over 40kb). Is there ANY way to consolidate this code at all? I am also having to validate the information on each field (as I said - 20 athletes x 12 fields = 240 validations on a single page). • php-fpm + persistent sockets = 502 bad gateway

  Put on your reading glasses - this will be a long-ish one. First, what I'm doing. I'm building a web-app interface for some particularly slow tcp devices. Opening a socket to them takes 200ms and an fwrite/fread cycle takes another 300ms. To reduce the need for both of these actions on each request, I'm opening a persistent tcp socket which reduces the response time by the aforementioned 200ms. I was hoping PHP-FPM would share the persistent connections between requests from different clients (and indeed it does!), but there are some issues which I havent been able to resolve after 2 days of interneting, reading logs and modifying settings. I have somewhat narrowed it down though. Setup: Ubuntu 13.04 x64 Server (fully updated) on Linode PHP 5.5.0-6~raring+1 (fpm-fcgi) nginx/1.5.2 Relevent config: nginx worker_processes 4; php-fpm/pool.d pm = dynamic pm.max_children = 2 pm.start_servers = 2 pm.min_spare_servers = 2 Let's go from coarse to fine detail of what happens. After a fresh start I have 4x nginx processes and 2x php5-fpm processes waiting to handle requests. Then I send requests every couple seconds to the script. The first take a while to open the socket connection and returns with the data in about 500ms, the second returns data in 300ms (yay it's re-using the socket), the third also succeeds in about 300ms, the fourth request = 502 Bad Gateway, same with the 5th. Sixth request once again returns data, except now it took 500ms again. The process repeats for several cycles after which every 4 requests result in 2x 502 Bad Gateways and 2x 500ms Data responses. If I double all the fpm pool values and have 4x php-fpm processes running, the cycles settles in with 4x successful 500ms responses followed by 4x Bad Gateway errors. If I don't use persistent sockets, this issue goes away but then every request is 500ms. What I suspect is happening is the persistent socket keeps each php-fpm process from idling and ties it up, so the next one gets chosen until none are left and as they error out, maybe they are restarted and become available on the next round-robin loop ut the socket dies with the process. I haven't yet checked the 'slowlog', but the nginx error log shows lots of this: *188 recv() failed (104: Connection reset by peer) while reading response header from upstream, client:... All the suggestions on the internet regarding fixing nginx/php-fpm/502 bad gateway relate to high load or fcgi_pass misconfiguration. This is not the case here. Increasing buffers/sizes, changing timeouts, switching from unix socket to tcp socket for fcgi_pass, upping connection limits on the system....none of this stuff applies here. I've had some other success with setting pm = ondemand rather than dynamic, but as soon as the initial fpm-process gets killed off after idling, the persistent socket is gone for all subsequent php-fpm spawns. For the php script, I'm using stream_socket_client() with a STREAM_CLIENT_PERSISTENT flag. A while/stream_select() loop to detect socket data and fread($sock, 4096) to grab the data. I don't call fclose() obviously. • What's wrong with this vcl config for varnish-cache as load balancer?

  I have the current configurations active on my default.vcl varnish file on the machine that balances the load for other two machines (the other two machines also have varnish active). My intention is to have this server do only the load balancing and the other machines do the processing and also their own caching. My problem is that even with the config testing (not even a stress test or anything, just a few requests a minute) I get the guru meditation error and have to restart varnish.   i have never ever worked with tor before. the company where i work allows us to have access to any site we wish. nonetheless as of the the beginning of this month, they installed a proxy server to filter which sites can be accessed and which ones cant. the filter isnt only on URLS, but IPS as well, even hexa IPS wont work. so after some research, i decided to use tor, the first day i installed it, everything went smooth and i was accessing any website i wish. just 2day, everything stopped. i try 2 start vidalia, it gets stuck at Connecting to Relay Directory. i work on windows 7 platform.   Installed Windows 7 (previously ran XP and Vista with no problems) a couple of weeks ago and I'm at least once a day getting the above error show up in the event logs and losing all internet connection. The only current way to resolve it is to reboot my cable modem. My ISP have been running diagnostics on it and tell me there is no problem whatsoever. I've configured my router (and PC on occasion) to point at OpenDNS - still occurs. I've had the PC directly connected to the modem - still occurs. If I can give more info that might of use please ask thanks Update: After moaning at my ISP for a couple of weeks (VirginMedia) they agreed to send me out a new cable modem ... and I've not had the issue since.

• Continual "The Windows Filtering Platform has blocked a connection" errors?

  Our systems have been compromised by something recently which has lead us to carry out a more detailed look at what is happening on our workstations. I have noticed an issue where the Security log of this Windows 7 workstation is continually logging a security "Audit Failure" where the detail is that "The Windows Filtering Platform has blocked a connection". This is happening thousands of times a day and would appear to be our BT Business Broadband HGV 2700 ADSL router attempting to connect to Port 137 (NET Bios) on my workstation and being blocked. This has unfortunately had the effect of filling up the log files so much that anything which might have been of use which was logged over the weekend to help debug the intrusion has been "overwritten off the end" of the Security log. (I've since increased the log file size limits massively and turned on archiving). Does anyone know if this is standard behaviour of a BT ADSL router or whether this indicates that the router is compromised in some way or malfunctioning, or have any further suggestions as to how to diagnose this problem?

  So I have a Windows XP SP 3 machine which is running Outlook 2007. When I search in Outlook for an email that exists using a basic keyword, like say "MySQL", I get no results. Search results may be incomplete because items are still being indexed. 8783 items remaining in "Mailbox - USER" 8812 items remaining across all open mailboxes. The thing is, these are the numbers it has been reporting for several days, and Outlook is open for 8 hours a day. It does not seem like the index is working. As best I can tell, the index seemed to stop about 3 weeks ago. How can I force Outlook 2007 to re-index everything and start working properly again?

• Microsoft Office document is "locked for editing by 'another user'"

  A few of my users are in and out of various Excel 2007 spreadsheets all day. One of them reports that "50% of the time" she tries to open a spreadsheet from the file server, an information message comes up stating: foo.xlsx is locked for editing by 'another user'. Open "Read-Only" or click "Notify" to open read-only and receive notification when the document is no longer in use. Nine times out of ten the document is not open by another user. My users immediately try to open the same document again, and it works. I imagine this is caused by Excel leaving owner files on the server, but I do not know why. An added clue: When one of my users selects "Notify," a dialog pops up in a moment informing them the file is available for them to edit. Any guidance on how to solve this issue and make my users' days flow better?

• Baseline 2952-SFP normal?

  I just installed a 3com 2952-sfp, and I had its port #48 connected to another gigabit switch through a cat5e cable. Now when I look at the logs, I see the lines shown below: Mar 23 11:20:15:829 2010 MSTP Critical PFWD Instance 0's GigabitEthernet1/0/48 has been set to forwarding state! Mar 23 11:20:15:822 2010 IFNET Warning LINK UPDOWN GigabitEthernet1/0/48: link status is UP Mar 23 11:20:12:974 2010 IFNET Warning LINK UPDOWN GigabitEthernet1/0/48: link status is DOWN The above happens like dozens of times per day, is there something wrong with my setup?

• Redhat Software RAID 1 not syncing

  Hey guys, I setup a software RAID 1 on a Redhat server, everything went sweet and it synced the first time. The other day the raid failedover for some reason and the disks hadn't been syncing since that first time, so it went back to 2 weeks ago when we did the first sync. We got the system back up running off the master only. However what would cause the software raid to not sync? I used mdadm to setup the RAID. Any ideas? EDIT: Sorry I don't have the output from /proc/mdstat before the raid failedover, it is now running on only the master... I can put the slave back in no problems but I was wondering how to make it sync all the time instead of only when I add it.

• Apache2 worker mpm too many processes

  I've got Apache installed with the worker mpm which seems to have too many processes active in spite of the configurations in place. I'll detail the configs below : StartServers 2 MinSpareThreads 10 MaxSpareThreads 25 ThreadsPerChild 25 MaxClients 150 Based on these settings, we should be seeing a maximum of 1 Apache control process (uid:root) and 6 Apache client processes (uid:www). This being due to MaxClients/ThreadsPerChild. However, I'm seeing a total of 1 Apache control process and 9 Apache client processes. init -- apache2(root) -- -- apache2(www) -- -- apache2(www) -- 1 thread -- -- apache2(www) -- 26 threads -- -- apache2(www) -- 26 threads init -- apache2(www) -- 2 threads -- apache2(www) -- apache2(www) -- apache2(www) We do not make it a habit of restarting Apache nor the Server, and will perform a reload 2-3 times a day at times so as to add new VHOSTs.   Hi, I was trying to backup and restore an ADAM database to a different server the other day. I copied all files under "Program Files/Microsoft ADAM" folder to the same path in the destination server and started the ADAM service in the destination server up. Although the service come back up successfully and I was able to connect to the instance with ADAM ADSI Edit mmc snap-in, I found I had to reset every single user's password before they can login again. Has anyone got this issue before? Is the password encrypted with the server IP address or something like that?

• IIS mystery: "Deadlock detected" periodically makes site unavailable

  A few times a day, our vb.net (IIS 6.0) website is randomly throwing the following error and becomes completely unavailable for 5-15 minutes at a time while the application is recycled: ISAPI 'c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_isapi.dll' reported itself as unhealthy for the following reason: 'Deadlock detected'. The website ran for months on the exact same server in beta without problem - but the problem started over the weekend when we made the site live. The live site is under some load but less than many of our other production websites. How should I attack this problem? I've looked into orphaning the worker process and creating a dump file - but I'm not sure how to analyze that. Any advice or information is appreciated. Thanks, Shane

• Nagios "CRITICAL - Socket timeout after 10 seconds" problems with service and host Checks.

  Hi Everyone, got a little bit of a problem with a Nagios system we are using in our office, which has only recently started appearing. what i would like to know really is the best solution to resolve this problem as ive done a bit of reading on it and there seems to be lots of different ways to solve it.. basically at random points throughout the day and on random hosts / services we will get a Critical warning flagged up that something is not behaving as it should, when we investigate 9 times out of 10 we end up with this as an error message. "SERVICE ALERT: SERVERNAME ;NSClient++ Version;CRITICAL;SOFT;1;CRITICAL - Socket timeout after 10 seconds" indicating the service or host has timed out, where do i go about setting the timeouts so this stops ? ive read that some of the plugin timesouts are as low as 10 seconds... thanks Kris

  Hello Experts, We have an enterprise web app to which our clients post/upload lots of documents [mainly images and pdf files] via web interface, iphone app etc etc. We are also using imagick to split pdf documents into images. Also, large number of mysql SELECT/UPDATE/DELETE queries happen all day. Currently, all of this is happening on same server and we are planning to split the process in 3 stages : 1) a server only for database 2) a server only for documents (document upload, splitting etc) 3) a server for the main php web app Is there any drawback with this kind of structure as compared to hosting everything on same server ? • w2k3 chkdsk errors as vmware 1.8 guest

  We have two Dell servers (CentOS 5.x) hosting a variety of VMs including 3 W2K3 and 1 W2K servers as guests as well as a handful of other Linux guests. Each Windows VM has 2 drives, C: and D:. on 2 of the W2K3 and the W2K boxes we have recurring errors appearing on a daily basis as reported by CHKDSK. We'll run CHKDSK /f and reboot all affected machines and the errors are reported as fixed. The next day CHKDSK will report the same errors. None of the linux guests nor either host report errors when the are rebooted. The RAID controllers are not reporting errors. We're beginning to think that these are phantom errors somehow, but I'm not willing to go to the bank on that just yet. Anybody have similar experiences or advice? Thanks! Sean

• Time Machine (OSX) doesn't back up files in Mount Point or Disk Image File

  I found this Q&A (http://superuser.com/questions/148849/backup-mounted-drive-of-an-image-in-time-machine) and this prompted me to ask the following question: I have two disk images which are scripted to be mounted on login. These two disk images are always mounted to the same location. These two disk images are encrypted TrueCrypt volumes. Time Machine (TM) will only back up the disk images the first time they are mounted, but not after that. As I modify documents within the volumes throughout the day, the modified timestamps are adjusted properly. However, TM does not back them up. TM never backs up the mount points which are two folders within my home directory. Any ideas as to why neither the mount point or the image files are backed up? Do the image files have to be closed (unmounted) after being modified for TM to back them up? Thanks, Chris

• Vmware Workstation in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala

  I am unable to get vmware workstation to work in Ubuntu 9.10. The same installer worked fine in 9.04. Installation is successful, but initialization is not. Does anybody know a fix? $ lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 9.10 Release: 9.10 Codename: karmic VMware-Workstation-for-Linux-64bit-6.5.1-126130.x86_64 I don't think my key will work for version 7, sadly. I have a free 365 day student evaluation license.
