• MVP - asp.net - passing information via views - confused

  Hi, I've just started to play around with MVP in asp.net. One thing I quite cant figure out is how do I pass information, i.e. an integer variable from one view(webform) to another. Let's I have a customerlistView which is mapped to a customerlist.aspx page. From it I select a customer and it's record id. Say I want to display the customer's details in another view (i.e customerDetailView, customerdetail.aspx). How do I achieve that ? Does that mean customerlistView would call the presenter of the customerdetail and cause a page redirect ? Any ideas ? thanks

• Best way to store 3 pieces of data as a single entry

  For a game server, I want to record details when a player makes a kill, store this, and then at intervals update to a sql database. The part i'm interested in right now is the best method of storing the kill information. What i'd like to pass to the sql server on update would be {PlayerName, Kills, Deaths}, where the kills and deaths are a sum for the period between updates. So i'm assuming i'd build a list along the lines of {bob, 1, 0} {frank, 0, 1} {tom, 1, 0} {frank, 0, 1} then on update, consolidate the list to {frank, 14, 3}etc Can someone offer some advice please?

Here is the basic idea with over simplification to get to the point. • LINQ, Left Join, Only Get where null in join table

  Hi. I am trying to do a left outer join on two tables, but I only want to return the results from the first table where the second table does not have a record (null). var agencies = from a in agencyList join aa in joinTable on a.AgencyId equals aa.AgencyId into joined from aa in joined.DefaultIfEmpty() where aa == null) select a; But this does not exclude the non null values of aa, and returns all the records just the same as if the 'where aa == null' was not there. • Incremement Page Hit Count in Django

  I have a table with an IntegerField (hit_count), and when a page is visited (ie. http://site/page/3) I want record id 3 'hit_count' column in the database to increment by 1. The query should be like: update table set hit_count = hit_count + 1 where id=3 Can I do this with the standard Django Model conventions? Or should I just write the query by hand? I'm starting a new project, so I am trying to avoid hacks. We'll see how long this lasts! Thanks!

  I have multiple models which all have a FK to the same model. All I know is the FK how can I determine which of the models has the FK attached? Below an example to clearify: class ModelA(models.Model): title = models.CharField("title", max_length=80) class ModelB(models.Model): fk = models.ForeignKey(ModelA) class ModelC(models.Model): fk = models.ForeignKey(ModelA) How can I figure out without using a try/except on each model whether B or C has the FK? • When does a MySQL Query actually execute in PHP?

  This sounds like a really simple question, but I am new to PHP. If I have a statement like this: $r =& $db->query("insert into table (col1, col2) values (10, 20)"); Do I have to still execute it, or does it get executed when I reference it? I have another case where I have a select query, which seems logically to run only when I call fetchrow, but the code I am presented with (to fix) does not call execute or fetch.I would have expected it to, so I cannot tell if it is just that I don't get it, or that the missing execute statement is the problem. It also does not insert the record, but it does not throw an error I can find. Also, I am a little confused by the =& notation. I looked it up on google, and found a few mentions of it, but I am still not clear on it. Thanks.

  Hey guys/gals I'm writing a python script that fixes some duplicate issues on my database. I would like to display some progress status to the users, currently I just print it like this: print "Merged " + str(idx) + " out of " + str(totalCount); The problem is that it prints that in a new line for every record and that does not look so good :) I'd like to either always print the string above on the same line on the screen or use some smart widget that displays it in some sort of progress bar. I intent to run this on the command line, any suggestions will be much appreciated.

  Hey guys, I'm using a ldap server to store phonerecords. I want to select a record with a specific telnumber. So this is what I'm doing: LdapSearchResults lsc = _conn.Search(dnForPhonebook, 1, "(&(objectClass=*)(uid=" + id + "))", null, false); I'm using novell library for ldap commands. The options i need to give in for the Search command are the dn to the node "phonebook" (string), scope (int), filter (string), attrrs (string[]) and typesOnly (bool). As you can see, for the filter, i'm pasting the parameter as string in de stringfilter. I was wondering, does ldap have the same way of work as mysql or sql server, which can work with paramaters?   I have a table with a column that will be encrypted by a trigger after the record is inserted. When I read the column, I need to apply a decrypt function in the hibernate domain class. While saving the object, the value of the column will be saved as such. While reading the column, apply a database function on the read data. @Formula and @Column annotation cannot be applied to an attribute in the entity class. How do I achieve this functionality without using one attribute for saving and another one with @Formula for reading it?

I thought this had to be done in the GridView_RowCommand "Delete" section... if(e.CommandName == "Delete") ... • App logicstics & changes due to scope creep

  I started an app that was initially a testing platform--user management, and managers that can view their employees tests. Recently, functionality has been extended (not built yet) to allow users to complete a test in place of an employee--basically adding a record, but no user. I have three tables in use for this: users(contains user info for login/security), profiles (all personal info: address, height, etc.), and survey (contains survey answers for user). How do I extend my application to encompass this functionality with minimal change to the structure? I assume that the best way to do this would be to insert records to the tables profiles and survey, and have no username/password/email? There MUST be a user_id associated b/c the tables are linked through the user_ids...

• Need some clarification with Patterns (DAO x Gateway)

  Me and my colleagues got into this discussion early this morning, and our opinions started to clash a bit, so I decided to get some impartial advice here. One of my colleagues reckons that the DAO should return an object (populated bean). I think it's completely fine when you're returning a recordset with only one line, but think it's overkill if you have to return 10 lines, and create 10 separate objects. I on the other see that the difference between DAO and Gateway pattern is that the gateway pattern will allow you to return a recordset to your business class, which will therefore deal with the recordset data and do whatever it needs to do. My questions here are: Which assumptions are correct? What should the return type be for a DAO (i.e. getContact() - for one record) Should getContacts() (for multiple records) even be on the DAO, if so, what's it's returntype? We seem to be having some sort of confusion about DAO and Gateway Patterns. Should they be used together? Thanks in advance

I'm trying to save it, but I cannot redeclare the "entity" below. How do I do it? I've tried releasing it, but that didn't work! • Is it impossible to secure .net code (intellectual property) ?

  I used to work in JavaScript a lot and one thing that really bothered my employers was that the source code was too easy to steal. Even with obfuscation, nothing really helped, because we all knew that any competent developer would be able to read that code if they wanted to. JS Scripts are one thing, but what about SOA projects that have millions invested in IP (Intellectual Property). I love .net, and especially C#, but I recently again had to answer the question "If we give this compiled program over to our clients, can their developers reverse engineer it?" I had gone out of my way to obfuscate the code, but I knew it wouldn't take that much for another determined C# developer to get at the code. So I earnestly pose the question, is it impossible to secure .net code? The considerations I have as as follows: Even regular native executables can be reversed, but not every developer has the skill to be able to do this. Its a lot harder to disassemble a native executable than a .net assembly. Obfuscation will only get you so far, but it does help a little. Why have I never seen any public acknowledgement by Microsoft that anything written in .net is subject to relatively easy IP theft? Why have I never seen a scrap of counter measure training on any Microsoft site? Why does VS come with a community obfuscater as an optional component? Ok maybe I have just had my head in the sand here, but its not exactly high on most developers priority list. Are there any plans to address my concerns in any future version of .net? I'm not knocking .net, but I would like some realistic answers, thank you, question marked as subjective and community!

Yeah, I know I post a lot of questions, but thats because I either need assurance that I am doing it right, what I am doing wrong, or if I am totally clueless, and cant find anything in the documentation. Anyways, I am trying to check for duplicate nodes. Here is how I would want to do it: Loop thru my nodes, and compare each single node's text (record), but if I got many nodes, wouldnt that be too time and memory consuming?   I have been working on a concept for a while for a sports related website where users can record a location on a map and put that location into a category for a sport and then rate it by a metric or two. I want these metrics displayed on the map but then I want a link or button to view a full page description. I know that this is possible with Google Maps but I don't know a lot about Open Street Maps or other options. I am expecting around 50,000 views a day and am curious as to what the best option would be.

• Filtering foreign keys with AJAX in Django admin

  I have most of this figured out already. I have AJAX returning the region/state/province when a country is selected. The correct foreign key is saved to the database, however, when the record is viewed afterwards the selected state is not shown in the select nor are any states for the selected country. I understand why this is happening as, the admin view is not aware of the relation between the state and the country. So here is the question. Is there a hook in the admin view that will allow me to load the correct states for the country and set the selected attribute on the option in the select tag? Or how can I override the admin view for any forms that require the country and region/state/province set? I am using jQuery and Djando-1.1. Thanks

• Updating Silverlight with data. JSON or WCF?

  We will be using custom Silverlight 4.0 controls on our ASP.NET MVC web page to display data from our database and was wondering what the most efficient method was? We will be having returned values of up to 100k records (of 2 properties per record). We have a test that uses the HTML Bridge from Javascript to Silverlight. First we perform a post request to a controller action in the MVC web app and return JSON. This JSON is then passed to the Silverlight where it is parsed and the UI updated. This seems to be rather slow, with the stored procedure (the select) taking about 3 seconds and the entire update in the browser about 10-15sec. Having a brief look on the net, it seems that WCF is another option, but not having used it, I wasn't sure of it's capability or suitability. Does anyone have any experiences or recommendations?

• "Out of Memory" error in Lotus Notes automation from VBA

  This VBA function sporadically fails with a Notes automation error "Run-Time Error '7' Out of Memory". Naturally, when I try to manually reproduce it, everything runs fine. Function ToGMT(ByVal X As Date) As Date Static NtSession As NotesSession If NtSession Is Nothing Then Set NtSession = New NotesSession NtSession.Initialize End If (do stuff) End function To put this in context, this VBA function is being called by an Access query, 3-4 times per record, with 20,000 records. For performance reasons, the NotesSession has been made static. Any ideas why it is sporadically giving an out-of-memory error? (Also, I'm initiating the NotesSession just so I can convert a datetime to GMT using Lotus's rules. If you know a better way, I'm listening).
