• Why does clicking on Windows 7 Printer Properties Result In Driver Not Installed?

  The question I need to ask is has anyone heard of getting a "driver not installed" error when clicking on a printer's properties on Windows 7, and is there a workaround? Here are the details of the problem. One of our users has a Windows 7 desktop, and an HP LaserJet 4050 T connected to via a parallel-to-usb converter. The PLC5 universal driver was installed for series 4050 printers. I needed to install the PLC 6 driver, which completed successfully. The user is an administrator of the system, and I was prompted to and accepted running as Administrator to install the driver. After the install, I went to see the 4050's properties and was prompted that the PLC6 driver was not installed. I believe the PLC6 driver was installed, because the PLC5 driver resulted in receiving an official HP error page indicating the printer was "not set up for collating" as the second page of printing two copies of a one page email. This problem did not occur with the PLC 6 driver. Oddly enough, setting back to PLC5 produced the same error about the PLC5 driver not being installed. I ignored/dismissed the error box (did not re-install the driver), and reproduced the error, with the second page being the HP not set up for collating error page. Any thoughts on what is causing this and how to clear it would be appreciated. The closest fix I could find was on a Microsoft tech page, and they had me clear winsock out of a Administrator run command line, followed by a reboot. That did not fix the problem. • OwnCloud RSA certificate configured for SERVER- ISSUE, webpage has a redirect loop

  I had Owncloud running on a server that had died, I remember installing being easy, I have migrated server and Owncloud is one of the last apps to install. Ok Just downloaded and installed the newest version of Owncloud on a Ubuntu 14.04 server with PHP 5.5.9-1, I am trying the manual install. I have tried adding repo and installing from apt-get install owncloud, did not work for me :/, whereis owncloud reported nothing. It's installed but never was able to bring up site. Now for my issue I finished the manual install from .tar.bz2 when it came time to login I receive "This webpage has a redirect loop" , I receive the error from Chrome and Safari web browsers. I can't login at all, with no user, I get the error page. Don't know if it is related or not but here's a look at the owncloud-error.log "RSA certificate configured for "mysite.com" Does NOT include an ID which matches the server name" Installed new ssl cert with CN as my ServerName directive in the vhost config file, same error :/ Re-installed owncloud same issue... • What to do when a device has no driver for Windows 7 but it has Vista, XP drivers

  This has always been a bothersome matter for me. Some devices (printers, scanners, etc.) have drivers for older versions of Windows (Vista, XP, 2000, NT) but no driver for Windows 7. What are my chances to install such devices on Windows 7? Example case: I have a Sharp printer & scanner (Sharp AR-122E N) which I have used for my old Windows XP based PC. Now I want to install it on a Windows 7 x64 based PC. Windows 7 cannot load its driver. I used the original driver CD but when I run the setup.exe (which is included in AR122EN111.exe, 6713KB), it says Cannot install driver on this operating system. Supported operating systems are: Windows 2000, XP, Vista. I tried to install the driver using compatibility settings. I tried Windows Vista and Windows XP SP3, but to no avail. The setup gave the same error. I also googled for Windows 7 driver for "Sharp AR-122E N" but it only listed the original driver that I tried. The official site of Sharp does not even list the driver for this product. In the past, the compatibility setting workaround did work for some devices, but this time it failed. What else can I do to overcome this problem?

• Fedora installed in Legacy mode, how to make it work in UEFI?

  I am trying to install a linux distribution on my new laptop. It's an MSI GE40 which comes preinstalled with windows 8. It's a UEFI machine. I have tried installing Ubuntu and Fedora with limited success. I've tried: running it in UEFI, UEFI with CSM mode, with secureboot enabled, ... with secureboot disabeled, ... with secureboot enabled but in user mode. I have had no success with any of these methods. With Ubuntu the grub loader shows up, but when I pick 'try ubuntu', or 'install ubuntu', it's just a blank screen(I've been using liveusb's btw). With Fedora, it'll show me the next screen on which it says 'binary authorised by vendor certificate' or 'Secure boot not enabled' and then stop doing anything. The closest thing to success I reached was switching to legacy mode to install Ubuntu, in which case I was able to get to the ubunutu installer but it wouldn't recognize windows 8 on my computer, so instead of continuing on I rebooted, and removed the USB pendrive to find my computer couldn't find windows 8. After a little dicking about I got it to find windows 8 again. Any ideas on how I should go about trying to install a distro on my computer? UPDATE:- So I ended up installing fedora using Legacy mode. To use both it and Windows at boot, I manually enter automatic repair so I can get to my UEFI settings and switch boot mode to UEFI to boot windows 8. I guess my question needs to be modified as to how do I get all of this to work in UEFI mode, so I can dual boot via selection through a bootloader, and not by repeatedly switching boot mode.

• Borked ubuntu uninstall - need to delete boot partition (i think)

  I just got a new pc laptop with windows 7 and wanted to install Ubuntu on it. Which i did, no problem there, by downloading the installer, burning it to dvd then booting off the dvd and installing. Then, i realised that the new Ubuntu 12.04 uses the Unity desktop, which i immediately disliked, and after some research, began to hate. So, i decided (after a little googling) to install Linux Mint instead. So, thinking i'd better start from scratch, i went to the Windows 7 disk manager and wiped the Ubuntu partition that had been created. Now, when i start up, i get an error from grub, the ubuntu boot manager: error: unknown filesystem grub rescue> _ and a blinking cursor where i can enter commands. I suspect that what i've done is deleted the main ubuntu partition but NOT deleted another partition which is a boot partition, or something like that? Can anyone tell me how i can rescue or unbork this? I'd like to either a) get back to my original windows-only setup OR b) install linux mint off dvd (which i have), into the empty partition, fixing any grub confusion in the process. Any suggestions? Thanks, max BTW please don't answer if you're just going to tell me to stick with 12.04, or install a different distro or something. I definitely want Mint and just want to fix this mess - thanks :)

• Chef bash resource not executing as specified user

  I'm writing a Chef cookbook to install Hubot. For some reason, npm is trying to run under the wrong user, not the user specified in the bash resource. I am able to run sudo su - hubot -c "npm install /usr/local/hubot/hubot" manually, and this gets the result I want (installs hubot as the hubot user). However, it seems chef-client isn't executing the command as the hubot user. Below you'll find the chef-client execution. Thank you in advance. • How do I get started with the M-Project is a Mobile HTML5 JavaScript Framework on Windows?

  This website for this great tool, call the M-Project says that I will need to add a doskey like this: doskey espresso=node C:\Path\To\Espresso\bin\espresso.js $1 $2 $3 $4 (It is a tool for creating Native mobile apps with the Phonegap/Cordova library, and it seems to be something that would be very helpful in this process). If I enter that at a command prompt in Windows 7 or 8, it's not going to stick around or persist. Is it an Environment Variable? Then it says at this page: http://www.the-m-project.org/ that it will work with Windows with some additional tools installed. The next line says that Node.js is needed, so I don't know if that is the additional tools mentioned above. Also, in an old discussion I read that one could just install cygwin. What would that do? It doesn't actually install any of the Linux distributions. I did install Ubuntu 12.04 server with VirtualBox because I thought it would be good to learn more about using Linux as I manage websites that are on a dedicated host. Anyway, the suggestion to install cygwin did not go into any details... I guess it would allow one to create a bash profile?? which would only work in a cygwin Command Line Window. Is that right? Isn't there a similar file that one could use in Windows or an Environment Variable that one could set to be able to achieve the same result? Thanks, Bruce

  Hi, Yesterday I shutdown my notebook, and Windows 7 Ultimate started to install automatic updates. After one hour, I noticed that the update was still running. I thought OK, I shall go to sleep and let it run. In the morning it was still running. Thus, I thought it had crashed, forced a shutdown of the notebook and then restarted it. With the same effect that the notebook is "freezing" at "Install Update 1 of 5". It does not look like it has crashed. The progress wheel is still moving. But it does not make any progress... Would appreciate any help! Edit: OK, I was able to log-in into safe mode. This way I passed the install update screen. I do not want to generally disable updates, what can I do to not install the last update, which is creating troube. Or how can I find out whats the problem with the last update?

• RHEL 5.3 Kickstart - How specify location of individual package in Workstation folder?

  I keep getting "package does not exist" errors during the install. I made a kickstart ISO to create an unattended install of a RHEL 5.3 build machine for C++ software releases. It pulls the kickstart config file from our internal web server. This is handy; it makes it easy to test and modify without having to make a new ISO. And I plan to check it in to version control if I can get it working. Anyway, the rpm packages are located in two folders on the disk; Client and Workstation. The packages install fine for the ones that are physically located under the Client folder. It cannot find those under the Workstation folder such as as doxygen and subversion complaining that packages do not exist. • How do I uninstall a ruby version installed via source?

  I installed a version (1.9.3-p194) of ruby via source using make install and realized this may have been the wrong route to take. Upon doing this, I realized this was a mistake and I should be using a solution such as rvm to address my ruby versions within the OS. I looked to see if an uninstall existed to be ran in conjunction with make and it didn't. I then proceeded to install rvm and add the aforementioned version in to my list of managed rubies within rvm which is not listed as ext-ruby-1.9.3-p194. rvm rubies ext-ruby-1.9.3-p194 [ x86_64 ] =* ruby-1.9.3-p194 [ x86_64 ] # => - current # =* - current && default # * - default** When I perform an rvm remove, it simply removes it from the rubies list however it still exists within /usr/local/bin. I am not concerned with the system install ruby version residing in /usr/bin as I understand that is tied to the OS and should simply be ignored. How can I safely uninstall/remove the aforementioned version and all the places in which it was installed, short of looking at the install script?

• dell latitude XT touch screen issue

  yesterday I installed windows 7 ultimate after I had the enterprise version on this machine for a few months. the installation went smoothly and everything worked fine except for the finger detection of the screen(only the pen worked) and the bottom screen buttons for rotating and so. so I started to install all the missing drivers dell recommends for this model on their site, but once I tried to install N-Trig degitizer driver the installation said it was unsuccessful and since then the touch stopped working completely! I tried system restore but it didn't help so I went on and formatted the harddisk completely once again and installed windows but that didn't work either. I tried to install the N-Trig's driver but it was alarting for a fatal error and said that no device was detected. same story with N-Trig rollback. so I checked the device manager and saw an "unknown device" with VID and PID values set as 0000. I figured the N-Trig driver might have messed with the device firmware or something and now it doesnt know it's ID and munufactor... Is there anything that can be done? like forcing the N-Trig driver to install on this device or something? please help!

  I have a non-domain machine that I use with our company's domain resources over vpn regularly. I switched to Windows 8 (fresh install), and the "Change a password" option went away from the Ctrl-Alt-Del window. Can't seem to google anything about this subject, or find a way to access that password change dialog. I tried running the .reg file from http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/63014-ctrl-alt-del-screen-add-remove-change-password.html with no luck. I also tried to Disable "Remove Change Password" via gpedit.msc. I could do it from my domain laptop, but I like to do it on this machine because it updates all my saved copies of those credentials. My local account is tied to my hotmail account if that matters. Updates: Administrator account. I apologize for stating this was an upgrade, it was a fresh install to a diff't drive. 64-bit Pro install. Bounty's almost up If someone can just confirm that the Change A Password... should or should not be present on a non-domain, Live tied, Win8 install, I'll be satisfied that I can or cannot expect to fix it.

• Triple-Boot + 4 partition Limit

  I just bought a new hard drive so that I could convert my XP-only machine into an XP-Ubuntu-Windows 7 triple boot machine. Since the drive is absurdly huge (1 TB) I wouldn't mind throwing ReactOS into the mix, too. I just found out that master boot records are limited to 4 entries, meaning 4 primary partitions. I had Windows XP set up on my old drive as a boot partition, a program files partition and a media partition. Since I really didn't want to install XP from scratch, I cloned this setup on my new drive. This leaves me one MBR partition entry for installing Windows 7, Ubuntu and ReactOS. I'd like to avoid having to install XP from scratch like the plague, partly because it's supposed to be a safety net in case things go wrong with my other OS's and because I've invested a lot of time getting it set up exactly the way I like it. Here are the options I've considered and why I don't like them: Install Windows 7 on my media partition. This would work, but I prefer to keep my media partition completely separate from any OS, so that I can reformat an OS partition without affecting my media partition at all. Use wubi or something to install Ubuntu in the same partition as something else. Again, this is brittle. Move all my media to a logical drive on an extended partition. Create another logical drive on this extended partition for Ubuntu. The problem here is that extended partitions are rather brittle--if you nuke one, it renders the rest useless. Just put the old drive back in my computer and run XP off it. Use the new one for the other OS's. The problem here is that the old drive is slower and uses extra power, generates extra heat, etc. Can anyone suggest any other possibilities that I may have overlooked?

However, the module is sometimes loaded using Import-Module MyModule -Force (actually, this is in the install script of the module). In this case, the call to Update-FormatData fails with this error : Update-FormatData : There were errors in loading the format data file: Microsoft.PowerShell, c:\pathto\myfile.Types.ext.ps1xml : File skipped because it was already present from "Microsoft.PowerShell". • As an admin, what tools do you use to log what you do to your boxes?

  I am more of a linux applications developer than an admin. Over time, I've built servers and maintained them, sometimes to offer services, mostly just to develop the applications I work on. Way back when I would create a file in my account to keep notes on what I did on each machine, so that I could replicate that when I migrated to other machines. Nowadays, I install something a private trac installation, install it's blog plugin, and then use that to make notes of everything I install, and most commands that I run, as well as the output. This provides me a combination wiki and blog that I find very useful as a "captain's log". I do this mostly so that when I migrate to a new clean machine, I have a much easier time in bringing it up. And yet, I am always amazed when I see others just install this, delete that, run this, setup this config, ... without seeming to use any way to actually note what they are doing. What do YOU do, and what tools are available? I am especially interested in the transition between maintaining a few machines for a few people and maintaining several to dozens of machines providing a real service. • Windows 8 "Upgrade Offer" eligibilty when running the Consumer Preview in a VM?

  If I have a VM running Windows 8 Consumer/Release Preview, am I allowed to take advantage of the Windows 8 upgrade offer, and install it on that machine? I would have assumed not...as there was never a licensed version of XP SP3 through to Windows 7 installed in that VM. It was a clean installation of the Consumer Preview into a VM. My confusion comes from the notes at the bottom of the download page for the Upgrade offer which states: Offer valid from October 26, 2012 until January 31, 2013 and is for individuals and small businesses needing to upgrade up to five devices. If you are a business customer looking to upgrade more than five devices to Windows 8 Pro, contact your Microsoft partner for more information. To install Windows 8 Pro, customers must be running Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 Consumer Preview, or Windows 8 Release Preview. I am assuming it's not possible and i'll need to purchase the System Builder edition to install within a VM? My guess is that you can use your downloaded upgrade offer only if you updated Windows 7 to the release preview, and therefore had the Windows 7 license on the machine, I used the serial number from the Microsoft Website when downloading the Release Preview, and did a clean install, so there was never a Windows 7 license on the VM. I have MSDN for development purposes, but I am looking to run in a VM for personal use as well, so my MSDN license is not valid for that particular use.

• InstallShield or Windows installer corrupted

  Just recently I've been unable to install any software on my Windows 7 machine. Anything that uses InstallShield or the Windows installer will just hang or give a weird error. I noticed there will be many duplicate isbew64.exe processes (like 25) that launch and then just sit there or else a lot of msiexec.exe *32 processes, depending on what I'm trying to install. One piece of software specifically is the Logitech Harmony software. It gives me an *is_string_not_defined* error, saying c:\program files (x86)\:\ the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. The other thing I was trying to install was Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and that just hangs as well, and then just leaves all the Windows installer processes running in the background after I quit the install process. Very odd. I've checked well and googled these issues, it doesn't appear to be any sort of malware issue. I feel like it's related to some kind of corrupted installer application. I've rebooted, deleted the InstallShield folder in program files/common files as some places online suggested but to no avail. I have no idea what to do, any ideas?

• Best format for hard drive for Windows and Mac?

  I have a 500 GB USB External Hard Drive. I need four partitions on it, for the following purposes: 160 GB for a bootable backup of my Mac. 160 GB for a bootable backup of my Windows. 11 GB for a bootable Snow Leopard Install Disk Rest as for file storage. Now I need a partition table which will get recognised on both Windows and Mac, without needing extra software on Windows, which will let me keep bootable copies of both OS'es, but let me access the file storage from both OS'es. Currently, I have a GUI Partition Table, with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Partitions for the two backups, Mac OS Extended for the Install Disk, and NTFS for the file storage. While this gets recognised perfectly on my Mac, thanks to an NTFS for Mac driver from Paragon, when connected to Windows, the drive is detected by the machine (listed in Safely Remove USB), but not recognised in Windows Explorer unless I install MacDrive, which is not feasible for me to install on public Windows Machines I might wanna access my storage area on. Can someone recommend the best combination of formats and software/drivers to get this done seamlessly?

• Conflicts with file from package mysql-5.0.77

  I'm trying to install APC (Alternative PHP Cache) on a CentOs dedicated server. I've everything done apart from configuring phpize. Running :yum -y install php-devel gives me the following error file /usr/share/mysql/charsets/Index.xml from install of mysql-libs-5.1.57-1.el5.art.x86_64 conflicts with file from package mysql-5.0.77-4.el5_5.3.i386 etc etc for other languages So, i think the mysql version i have is too old & i more than likely need to upgrade mysql to version 5.1. Im reluctant to do this as a) its a live server (although only 3/4 domains) b) ive read ill read to recompile php if i upgrade To add to this i have plesk installed for managing domains & might need reinstalling/reconfiguring also. sorry for the long intro but its my first post & best to give as much info as possible, so my question is basically Is there any way i can run :yum -y install php-devel to get phpize working to complete installation of APC for the version of mysql i currently have installed? ie 5.0.77

• Ubuntu 12.04 can't boot after installing with software RAID 1

  I've been trying to install Ubuntu with software RAID on my server and there is obviously something that I don't understand about the process. This is the guide that I followed: https://help.ubuntu.com/11.04/serverguide/advanced-installation.html I have two identical 1 TB disks in my server. I went through the initial install process and manually set up my partitions. On each disk I set up: (1) 100 MB partition for EFI boot (I didn't originally have this but added it based on a forum post I found after my original install failed to boot, I ended up with EFIboot since that was what the 'guided partitioning' decided to do) (1) 970 MB partition for / (1) 30 MB partition for swap I then created new RAID 1 disks combining the two partitions, one from each disk, such that each partition is mirrored. I then configured their usage as stated above. After saving the configuration I said yes to boot in a degraded state. The rest of the setup went normally, no errors of any kind. I saw GRUB being installed and again no errors. However, after rebooting the server I get the dreaded 'Insert boot media' and nothing happens. I loaded up the recovery disk and the mdadm configuration looks correct. md0 is my EFIBoot partition md1 is my \ partition using ext4 md2 is my swap partition Running file -s /dev/md0 doesn't indicate that GRUB is there and so I attempted to reinstall GRUB using the recovery disk. I selected the md0 disk and it appeared to install just fine. Running file -s /dev/md1 shows the error needs journal recovery, I'm not sure if that's related or not or how to fix that. Rebooting gives me the same problem, no boot media found. I've searched around the internet but can't figure out what to do next or more importantly how to troubleshoot what exactly is going wrong. • package manager cannot create users? installation script fails?

  It seems that when trying to install any package which requires the creation of a system User and Group, the installer fails with the error: install: invalid user 'username' When it happened the first time, I assumed it was related to the package, or it's installation script. But now I am attempting a different package, and alas, the same issue arises! note: /etc/passwd and /etc/group is not chattr -i Here is the example output from an attempted installation (of varnish): Selecting previously unselected package varnish. Unpacking varnish (from .../varnish_3.0.2-1ubuntu0.1_amd64.deb) ... Processing triggers for man-db ... Setting up libvarnishapi1 (3.0.2-1ubuntu0.1) ... Setting up varnish (3.0.2-1ubuntu0.1) ... install: invalid user `varnish' dpkg: error processing varnish (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Processing triggers for libc-bin ... ldconfig deferred processing now taking place Errors were encountered while processing: varnish note: running ubuntu 12.04 For now, I have resolved the issue by manually creating the users, and running apt-get install -f, but this does not resolve the actual issue. Any ideas?

• Windows 7: moved system partition, need to update boot partition

  So, I have a decently standard Windows7/Ubuntu dual-boot setup, and (since Ubuntu is my usual operating system) I found I needed to grow my Ubuntu partition and shrink my W7 partition. Originally, my system (500G) looked like this: W7 Boot Partition (1.5G) Ubuntu (around 240G) W7 (same as Ubuntu) (on an extended partition, all by itself) Swap (rest of disk, around 16G) Now I'm no stranger to partitioning and filesystem tools, especially GParted, which I used on a Linux boot disk. After my partition editing, the partitions are laid out the same, except the Ubuntu partition is now 407G and the W7 partition is smaller to compensate. I had supposed, based on http://www.gparted.org/faq.php, that I would be able to run the W7 install disk in recovery mode and have it deal with the rearrangement, then possibly reinstall GRUB or something. Well, now the W7 install disk doesn't even see my W7 installation. All my files are there, the NTFS is perfectly clean, no problems there, but the install disk won't notice it. (Of course, the GRUB entry works fine but the W7 boot partition (which I didn't change) refuses to boot it.) So, basically, any ideas on how to fix this? I don't especially want to rerun the entire install procedure because I'll have a bunch of programs to reinstall (never mind redoing GRUB), but I fear that might be the only option. Thanks.
