• What's the difference between my nameserver and CName settings?

  I have purchased a domain name(mxsoup.net) through GoDaddy, and it is just parked. In order to set up my custom URL for my SourceAudio site, they give me the following instructions: In order to host your site at a your own URL, we need you to set up some DNS records to point your URL to us. Specifically, we need two CNAME references, one for 'www.mxsoup.net' and one for 'secure.mxsoup.net', both of which should point to 'web2.sourceaudio.com'. But the rep on the phone at GoDaddy said that my site is hosted at HostMonster.com, and therefore I need to talk to them to accomplish this(which is possibly true, but my business owner says he hasn't purchased hosting for this particular domain, yet he does have some other sites in his hostmonster hosting acct.) My GoDaddy account shows that my nameservers are pointing at NS1.HOSTMONSTER.COM, and NS2.HOSTMONSTER.COM, and I can edit those. But is this the same as setting up the CNAME as described above? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• Is it illegal to use content in such a way?

  I have a couple of questions about the legality of the content of some websites. I am currently working on two websites and I would like to make sure I am not breaking any laws, by using some content like I am... Do I need to get a license to use images from the Internet (such as google.images.com) in my site, assuming they aren't a company logo belonging to another company? If not, am I allowed to use it after I modify it with a image editing software? If content such as phone numbers, e-mail addresses, website addresses, and text from websites can be found for free online, and I gather this information for a search engine based site that I am working on and offering this information on a paid basis (similar to google, but more specialized), is something that is legal? Note: I am not 'copying' or redirecting business from anywhere, to my site. The exact opposite, the site I am working on actually helps advertise businesses and make it easier for customers to find them.

• How do I make my hosting detect _escaped_fragment_ and fetch the corresponding HTML? [on hold]

  I have an AJAX site and I'm using shebangs (#!) in my urls with the intention of then providing the correct HTML versions when google bots replace the #! with _escaped_fragment_. How do I go about routing/proxying/redirecting the url with _escaped_fragment_ to the corresponding html pages? I can't find documentation on this part of the process specifically, and my first thought was that I should be using a 301 or 302 redirect, but I was told that wasn't the case, albeit not given any more info.

  Hi all! I know there have been a few topics here about password managers but I read them all and did not really find what I'm looking for. What I'd need is a free or cheap (most password mgr software is $500 for 20+ users, exaggerated!) multi-user password manager, highly preferable web-based so that we can host it on one of our local server, of Hyper-V VM's. So: -free or cheap ( <100$) -multi-user of groups -web based -not very hard to install I tried a few, one very expensive, one I did not get to work- Web Keepass Manager This works with tomcat and probably conflicts with our IIS 7.0 or 7.5 PS: thus, nothing online (!) it has to stay local Thanks in advance!

• Is it costly to leave the Console and Script features enabled in Firebug?

  For some time now, I've run Firebug constantly enabled to do quick DOM inspections, leaving the Console and Script panels disabled. I'm just starting to use these two features so I don't have to keep using alerts for testing and debugging. I enable them while I use them and turn them back off when I'm done. I'd like to know if these particular features can slow things down such that they shouldn't be left on round-the-clock. Like do they slow down page loads, use inordinate chunks of memory or something? I don't see anything about it in the Firebug wiki.

• Catching typos or other errors in web-based scripting languages

  Hi, My background is mainly strongly typed languages (java, c++, c#). Having recently gotten back to a bit of javascript, I found it a bit annoying that if I misspell something by accident (for example I'll type 'myvar' instead of 'myVar') my entire script crashes. The browser itself most of the time doesn't even tell me I have an error, my program will just be blank, etc. Then I have to hunt down my code line by line and find the error which is very time consuming. In the languages I am used to the compiler lets me know if I made a typo. My question to you is, how do you overcome this issue in scripting (javascript)? Can you give me some tips? (this question is mainly aimed at people that have also come from a strongly typed language). Note: I mainly use the terminal/VIM ... this is mainly b/c I like terminal and I SSH alot too

• Broken web interface in WRT54G router

  I flashed my WRT54G (v3) from a custom firmware to the lastest Linksys one (v4.21.1) Now the internet/LAN works fine, but the web interface (http://192.168.1.1/) shows broken pages. I tried to manually navigating to the firmware upgrade page (by entering its URL), but it is broken too and not working. I tried a 30/30/30 reset twice, but the broken web interface still shows up. I tried to flash using the tftp2.exe application, which told me that the router didn't respond to the request. I tried to flash using the Windows commandline TFTP protocol, but I don't know how to supply a password on this prococol. (there is a factory default password ("admin") which I can't remove since the web interface is broken)

• Scale DIV with tiles

  I am trying to create a repeating background. I have a main DIV with a grid of small 16x16 DIVs. I am trying to scale the main DIV in CSS; when the small DIVs simply have a red background color everything works great, but when there is a background image in the small DIVs then borders become visible between the tiles. • Transferring local site to shared hosting

  I'm looking to setup a simple online text processing tool similar to the Clang demo. The processing program itself is a C++ program which I can modify to provide the desired output I need. Since I use Linux+Perl daily and have used Apache in the past, I'd like to get this working locally first. My two questions are: Is it possible to do this with only Apache and Perl? I've looked into frameworks for doing this and quickly ran into The Paradox Of Choice. Will I be able to easily transfer a working local site to a shared hosting service? I want to administer as little as possible. My understanding is since this needs to run a C++ program that CGI is a requirement and thus I need to administer the httpd server. Hopefully this doesn't mean a VPS. Thanks

• What is the current legal status of magnet links?

  Prelude: I develop a cloud service which could be described as dropbox meets torrents and as side effect it enables distribution of arbitrary content via magnet links. Certain amount of magnet links will be displayed on the main website (I will be able to remove them one-by-one or ban users but no more). I will not be able to avoid magnets without complete rework of overall project architecture and either way it will hurt overall performance badly, probably making service meaningless. So my question is, what should I do, to avoid legal problems if my site in a nutshell is just a collection of magnet links? Privacy achieved via end-user encryption, so there is almost no access restrictions on the website. And anyway will help me any? Will hosting in particular country help me?

• What is a good network for full-page rich ads?

On hosting company website finded DNS addresses and applied them to domain hosting website(changed DNS) I done it yesterday, so today it should work, but: Unable to resolve the server's DNS address appears.   I have a test environment for a remote desktop farm with a connection broker load balancing logins across remote desktop session host servers. All servers are built on Server 2012 R2. Using rd web access, we can access this farm from anywhere. When logging in via web access, you can choose the screen resolution or use full screen. If you have two monitors when selecting full screen, it will always use both your monitors. Does anyone know how to adjust the RDWeb page so that you can choose whether or not to use both your monitors? This option is in the GUI from RDP 6.1 onwards, so I would imagine there is a way to also add it the web access page.

I understood that using service layer is the best approach here. If I understood correctly the service should be calling the function on the BL layer (correct me if I'm wrong) The dilemma: In my main winform UI - should I call the functions from the BL, or from the service?   I'm a lone web developer with my own Centos VPS hosting a few small web sites for my clients. Today I discovered my httpd service had stopped (for no apparent reason - but that's another thread). I restarted it but now I need to find a way that I can be notified by email and/or SMS if it happens again - I don't like it when my client rings me to tell me their web site doesn't work! I know there are probably many different possibilities, including server monitoring software. I think all I really need is a script that I can run as a cron job from my dev host (which is permanently running in my office) that attempts to load a page from my production server and if it doesn't load within say 30 seconds then it sends me an email or SMS. I'm pretty rubbish at shell scripting, hence this question. Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated, thanks to all you clever sysadmin guys and girls out there :)

• Are webhosts that require NS instead of a CNAME common?

  I've just signed up with a webhost (which I prefer not to name) and I'm reasonably happy with it. The only nit was when I was ready to put a site online and I asked the support line to what name I should point my 'www' CNAME to. They responded that they don't do that and I need to set my domain's NS records for the hosting to work. "Why would you ever want to do it that way? Our service to you includes DNS and our servers are probably much better than the one your registrar provides." This was a bit of surprise as all of the other webhosts I've worked with happily support this. I've set up (eg) gallery.myfriend.example for friends by having them configure their DNS to CNAME 'gallery' to the name of a shared server at a webhost and the webhost does name-based hosting for 'gallery.myfriend.example'. (Of course, if the webhost ever tells me I'm being moved from A.webhost.example to B.webhost.example, it would be my responsibility to change where the CNAME points. Really good webhosts would instead create myname.webhost.example for the IP of whichever server my stuff happens to be on, so I'd never have to worry about keeping my CNAME up to date.) Is my impression correct, that most webhosts will happily support a service that begins with a CNAME hosted elsewhere, or is it really more common that webhosts will only provide a service if they control the DNS service too?
