• OpenDataSource fails pls help

  I'm trying export records from SQL Server 2008 to mdb file using OpenDataSource. It works when I log in using Windows authentication. But it fails when I use SQL Server authentication. This is the error i get OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "(null)" returned message "Could not delete from specified tables.". Msg 7320, Level 16, State 2, Procedure EXPORT_Employee, Line 110 Cannot execute the query "DELETE FROM employee_export " against OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "(null)". • Should we use Visual Studio 2010 for all SQL Server Database Development?

  Our company currently has seven dedicated SQL Server 2008 servers each running an average of 10 databases. All databases have many stored procedures and UDFs that commonly reference other databases both on the same server and also across linked servers. We currently use SSMS for all database related administration and development but we have recently purchased Visual Studio 2010 primarily for ongoing C# WinForms and ASP.NET development. I have used VS2010 to perform schema comparisons when rolling out changes from a development server into production and I'm finding it great for this task. We would like to consider using VS2010 for all database development going forward but as far as I understand, we would have to set up ALL databases as projects because of the dependencies on linked servers etc. My question is, do you have any experience using VS2010 for database development in a similar environment? Is it easy to use in tandem with SSMS or is it a one way street once VS2010 projects have been set up for all databases? Can you make any recommendations/impart any experience with a similar scenario? Thanks, Luke

• How to Increment Visual Studio build number using C++?

  I have a Visual Studio 2008 project that produces a file called: "Game-Release.exe". This was configured under Project Properties - C/C++ - Linker - General: $(OutDir)\$(ProjectName)-Release.exe I would like to take this a bit further by have an incrementing build number so I would have something which says: Game-Release-Build-1002.exe The number on the end should be an incrementing integer. I will be storing the build exe's on subversion so I think i would find this useful (although not necessary). Perhaps there is a built in macro in Visual Studio that could handle this. Quite possibly I was thinking I could have a text file with the build number in it and have the compiler read, use and increment the number in the file each time the project is built. My goal is however to make the process as automated as possible. What is the best way to accomplish this? If you offer an opinion, please also provide the code we can all share. Thnx.

• How do I debug a DLL from VS2008?

  I have a program written in VB.Net (Visual Studio 2008) that uses a DLL written in Visual C++ by another developer. I'd like to be able to step in to the C++ code as my code makes calls to methods in the DLL. Since the DLL is it's own solution, I don't think it can be included in my solution/project. I tried putting the DLLs pdb file in the debug/bin directory with the rest of my build and pdb files. However, when I get to the point in stepping through my code, and it gets to the dll call, it just steps right over the dll code. Do I have to manually load symbols? Not sure what I'm doing wrong. • Can't set breakpoints on an auto-property setter ? Why?

  Apparently VS 2008 does not allow setting a breakpoint just on the setter of an auto-property. I.e. if I define an auto-property like this: public int CurrentFramesize { get; protected set; } and then try to set a breakpoint on the setter line, the whole auto-property turns breakpoint-red. This works just fine for normal properties, so any idea why auto-properties get this special (restrictive) treatment? Are they more than just syntactic sugar to normal properties with a hidden backing field?

• EnvDTE: ArgumentException when accessing the ActiveConfiguration

  Hello, I'm writing an addin for Visual Studio 2008. At some point in my code, I'm attempting to access the current active configuration for a project: var configName = _Project.ConfigurationManager.ActiveConfiguration.ConfigurationName; Sometimes, in some very obscure cases, the getter for ActiveConfiguration throws an ArgumentException. Nothing in the documentation says anything about this (but given the very poor quality of the documentation, it was to be expected), and the exception's message is not helping at all. Also, ConfigurationManager is an interface, and I don't know what's the real implementation behind it, so I can't simply disassemble it in Reflector to know the cause. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  Dear all I have a temp table ,datas keep on coming in and going out. now a days even if there is very few records also if we select ,its taking so long. i cant put index on this table because its a Temp table. The only way i found that drop the table and recreate it.its working very fine. any idea why this is happening?is it like some kind of fragmentation?if there is index ,then we can check the frgment,but if there is no index then waht to do. we are using sql server 2008 64 bit thanks Joseph

  Hi I'm using Gallio\MbUnit 3.1 with ReSharper and Visual Studio 2008. 'string invalidEmail'. If I remove that prameter it seems to work normally. It will run the test if I have: [Test] public void IsValidEmail_Invalid_Emails_Should_Return_False() { var invalidName = test@badEmail@_test.com"; Assert.IsFalse(AppHelper.IsValidEmail(invalidEmail), "Email validation failed for " + invalidEmail); } I appreciate that there may be better ways to achieve this test but I'm trying to work my way through a book and this is how it's explaining things. • Disable CTRL+P in WPF DocumentViewer

  I'm working on a new presenation component for one of our applications. I am building a Custom WPF Control that just has a DocumentViewer in it and hosting that CC in a Windows Forms application with an ElementHost. I'm using Visual Studio 2008 with C#. I have customized everything through the XAML to give it the look and feel that integrates it perfecting into our application, but one thing remains... If you press CTRL+P the print dialog still comes up. I'm at a complete loss as to how to disable that fuction. The use of this CC is to allow the users to pull up and view the Manuals for the systems installed at that site, but we don't want them to accidently print them (100s of pages). Please help, -G

  Hi, c# .Net 3.5 visual studio 2008, windows xp I have a main form in a project, given a specific set of circumstances another form is instantiated and displayed to the user: Form frmT = new frmTargetFolder(expName, this); frmT.Show(); As you can see, I am passing a reference to the new form from the current one. My question is, what do I have to do to a method so that it is exposed to the new form, the same for a variable? I have tried defining the functions as public, but I can't seem to access them, also I have written a Get and Set method for a variable, again how do I expose these functions and methods to other forms? public void hit() { MessageBox.Show("hit it"); } bool setOverRide { get { return OverRide; } set { OverRide = value; } } The main form is called frmDataXfer and the form, form which I am trying to call the functions and methods of frmDataXfer is called frmTargetFolder, an instance of which is created in the frmDataXfer and referenced as frmT. • missing duration in iis 7.5 Failed Request Tracing on server core

  We have Failed Request Tracing working on IIS7.5 (Windows 2008 Server Core) and our rule has ASP.NET checked off and verbose logging set. However, on many googled screenshots of what a typical failed request trace looks like, we see the actual duration of each subpart in milliseconds shown to the right of the word verbose on the "request details" tab. Viewing our XML in IE shows no such thing to the right of the word verbose. Furthermore, The "Performance View" tab is blank; so no help viewing the durations there either. Is there something we need to enable? What gives?

• silverlight 3 navigation page not availble in VS as item to add

  I've recently upgraded my computer from Vista Home Premium 64-bit to Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I've re-installed VS 2008 web express, and re-installed all the silver light sdk's, tools, etc. But now when I want to add a Silverlight Navigation Page, it is not avialble to me in the list of items that can be added. The navigation dll is installed, as my project existed before the OS upgrade. The program still runs just fine as is, but I want to add another navigation page item to the project, and I'm stumped for how to do it. Any ideas? Thanks, Steve

• How do I upgrade my Crystal Report libraries in a .NET 3.5 project to CR XI R2?

  Our project currently uses Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2008. We need to upgrade to XI R2, but I'm having problems doing so. Here are the steps I followed: Install Crystal Reports XI R2. Collect updated assemblies from the GAC. I did this because I couldn't find version XI libraries in the "Add References..." dialog. I verified that these assemblies were of version 11.5.*. The libraries I gathered were: CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine CrystalDecisions.Enterprise.Framework CrystalDecisions.Enterprise.InfoStore CrystalDecisions.ReportSource CrystalDecisions.Shared CrystalDecisions.Windows.Forms Replace all references in my projects to version 10.5 Crystal libraries with references to the newer assemblies. Everything builds fine, but when I try to instantiate a ReportDocument, I get this error: The type initializer for 'CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument' threw an exception. Is there anything I'm missing? Will this just not work?

• C# SerialPort.GetPortNames() behavior

  In my C# 2008 application, I use the SerialPort.GetPortNames() function to retrieve the list of currently available ports. What I have noticed is, when ever I plug in a USB device, it's port number i s shown in the list on my Application and when I unplug it and refresh the list, the port number is no longer there. One phase of the application involves reading/writing data from/to the device continuously. Now, my expectation is, If I unplug the device during the operation and get the current Port list using SerialPort.GetPortNames(), the Port Name will not be there and I can use that to make the decision that the device has been unplugged. To my surprise, the Port name is still found despite having it removed Why is the program behaving like this? The port name isn't listed when in no-communication mode. Does it have something to do with the device being removed when it's communicating?

• Connecting to a SQL Server Compact Edition (.sdf) from an MFC application

I'm building an MFC app in Visual Studio 2008 which classifies textures and I need some sort of lightweight database to hold the characteristics (just some doubles and strings) which can be: -carried around with the app on different computers; -be able to perform queries on it from the app (searches , updates ,inserts ,etc); Currently I'm looking into SQL compact edition because it was very easy to create from Visual Studio ( I also need only one table) but I having a hard time connecting and updating the db from C++. This is what I've found on msdn regarding C++ and SQLCE: public: void createSqlCeConnection(){ SqlCeConnection* myConnection = new SqlCeConnection(); myConnection->ConnectionString = "DataSource = blabla.sdf"; MessageBox::Show(String::Format( S"Connection State: {0}", __box(myConnection->State))); } Unfortunately my experience with .net apps is pretty limited.   Hi, I have an application I’m writing in access with a SQL server backend. One of the most heavily used parts is where the users selects an answer to a question, a stored procedure is then fired which sees if an answer has already been given, if it has an UPDATE is executed, if not an INSERT is executed. This works just fine but now we have upgraded to SQL server 2008 express I was wondering if it would be better/quicker/more efficient to rewrite this SP to use the new MERGE command. Does anyone have any idea if this is faster than doing a SELECT followed by either an INSERT or UPDATE?

  Hey guys, My company purchased Visual Studio Pro 2008 last year, which had a 'free' copy of SQL Server Developer, which I have been using for development. We are wanting to upgrade the copy of developer edition to enterprise (As we now want to use the server as a production server), and have purchased the licenses for this. Now... Morally we're in the clear... However does this comply with MS licensing T&C's? We have Developer installed how we want it, and don't really want to uninstall SQL Server Dev just to install SQL Server Ent. Is there a way to transfer the license key to our Enterprise key without having to reinstall? Thanks, JD

• What did I lose when I upgraded?

  I upgraded my work box from Vista64 to Win7-64 by doing a format and reinstall. I kept backups of the project done in MS Visual Studio 2008 (Team). But now it won't compile. I am getting errors generated on lines in the MS created header files like "'_In_' not defined" etc. I know it is because I lost some compiler setting/directive. I was sure that the compiler settings would be in the project file; now I see that things like the include file directories, LIB files, etc. are not. [FYI: The project is a VB.NET GUI with VC++ DLL talking to a PIC24 micro over USB.] How do I most efficiently get my project back on the road to execution?

• Windows CE 5.0 emulator needed

  I need an emulator for Windows CE 5.0 to test an embedded device (not PDA or smartphone) application that I am developing. This is what I have already tried: Visual Studio 2008 Pro includes an emulator. Unfortunately, it does not include a Windows CE image (only Windows Mobile and Smartphone). Yes, there is a difference, see the screenshots here. Windows CE includes a "start button", windows that can be minimized, moved around etc. There is a Windows CE Device Emulator available from Microsoft. Apart from the fact that its license only permits non-commercial use, it does not run in Windows 7 (it requires .net Framework 1.1, which is incompatible with Windows 7) nor in Windows XP mode (error message: "Emulator for Windows CE will not run one virtual machine within another. Please run the virtual machine on the host operating system"). Is there any option that I have missed?

• Visual Studio DataSet Designer keep queries

  In visual studio datasource designer(The screen where you have all the UML Diagrams including relations) is there any way to refresh a table and its relations/foreign key constraints without refreshing the whole table? The way I am doing it at the moment is removing the table and adding it again. This adds all the relations and refreshes all fields. Also if I change a fields data type, is there a way to automatically refresh all the fields in the datasource? Again without deleting the table and adding it again. Reason for this is because some of my TableAdapters have quite a number of complex queries attached to them and when I remove the table the adapter gets removed as well including all its queries. I am using Visual Studio 2008 and connecting to a MySQL database.

  I have a SQL 2008 Ent server with the databases "DBOne", "DBTwo", "DBThree" on the server DEVSQLSRV. Here is my Powershell script: $DBNameList = (Invoke-SQLCmd -query "select Name from sysdatabases" -Server DEVSQLSRV) This produces my desired list of database names as: Name ----- DBOne DBTwo DBThree I has been my assumption that anything that is returned as a list is an Array in Powershell. However, when I then try this in Powershell: $DBNameList -contains 'DBTwo' It comes back has "False" instead of "True" which is leading me to believe that my list is not an actual array. • Visual studio won't debug into referenced DLL (from same solution)

  I have a Visual studio 2008 solution, with 2 projects. A DLL, A, and a Web application, B. B has a project reference to A, and A.dll and A.pdb are being copied to B's bin/ directory. Everything is set to compile in debug mode. I can run the cassini webserver and debug web application B fine, but when I come to call a method in A.dll, pressing F11 to step into it does not step into it, it steps over it. I want to step into it. Any ideas why I might not be able to step into the source code of A?
