  I have a .csv file with records written in the following form: 2010-04-20 15:15:00,"8.9915176259e+00","8.8562623697e+00" 2010-04-20 15:30:00,"8.5718021723e+00","8.6633827160e+00" 2010-04-20 15:45:00,"8.4484844117e+00","8.4336586330e+00" 2010-04-20 16:00:00,"1.1106980342e+01","8.4333062208e+00" 2010-04-20 16:15:00,"9.0643470589e+00","8.6885660103e+00" 2010-04-20 16:30:00,"8.2133517943e+00","8.2677822671e+00" 2010-04-20 16:45:00,"8.2499419380e+00","8.1523501983e+00" 2010-04-20 17:00:00,"8.2948492278e+00","8.2884797924e+00" From these data I would like to make clusters - I would like to add a column with number indicating the hour - so in case of the first row a value 15 has to be added in a new row. The first problem is that calling a function [numData, textData, rawData] = xlsread('testData.csv') creates an empty matrix numData and one-column textData and rawData structures. Is it possible to create any template which recognizes a yyyy, MM, dd, hh, mm, ss values from the data above? What I would basically like to do with these data is to categorize the values by hours so from the example row of input: 2010-04-20 15:15:00,"8.9915176259e+00","8.8562623697e+00" update 1: in Matlab the line above is recognized as a string: '2010-04-26 13:00:00,"1.0428104753e+00","2.3456394130e+00"' I would want this to be the output: 15, 8.9915176259e+00, 8.8562623697e+00 update 1: a string has to be parsed Does anyone know how to parse a string and retrieve a timestamp, value1 (1.0428104753e+00) and value2 (2.3456394130e+00) from it as separate values?

• Database doesn't update using TransactionScope

  I have a client trying to communicate with a WCF service in a transactional manner. The client passes some data to the service and the service adds the data to its database accordingly. For some reason, the new data the service submits to its database isn't being persisted. When I have a look at the table data in the Server Explorer no new rows are added... I've tried all combinations of db.SaveChanges() and db.AcceptAllChanges() as well, but the new payment data just doesn't get added to the database!

• javascript read a text file

  I have looked everywhere and surprisingly can't find a good solution to this! I've got the following code that is supposed to read a text file and display it's contents. But it's not reading, for some reason. Am I doing something wrong? FTR, I can't use PHP for this.   I need to upload a .csv file and save the records in bigtable. My application successfully parse 200 the records in the csv files and save to table. • Design an Application That Stores and Processes Files

  I'm tasked with writing an application that acts as a central storage point for files (usually document formats) as provided by other applications. It also needs to take commands like "file 395 needs a copy in X format", at which point some work is offloaded to a 3rd party application. I'm having trouble coming up with a strategy for this. I'd like to keep the design as simple as possible, so I'd like to avoid big extra frameworks or techniques like threads for as long as it makes sense. The clients are expected to be web applications (for example, one is a django application that receives files from our customers; the others are not yet implemented). The platform it will be running on is likely going to be Python on Linux, unless I have a strong argument to use something else. In the beginning I thought I could fit the information I wanted to communicate in the filenames, and let my application parse the filename to figure out what it needed to do, but this is proving too inflexible with the amount of information I'm realizing I need to make available. Another idea is to pair FTP with a database used as a communication medium (client uploads a file and updates the database with a command as a row in a table) but I don't like this idea because adding commands (a known change) looks like it will require adding code as well as changing database schemas. It will also muddy up the interface my clients will have to use. I looked into Pyro to let applications communicate more directly but I don't like the idea of running an extra nameserver for this one purpose. I also don't see a good way to do file transfer within this framework. What I'm looking for is techniques and/or technologies applicable to my problem. At the simplest level, I need the ability to accept files and messages with them.

• Outstanding issues with jQuery.ajax() in IE8?

I have tried to use IE8's Developer tools to see where exactly it fails, but I haven't been successful yet. So two questions Is there anything blatantly wrong with my ajax call here that could be preventing me from seeing it in IE where it works in FF/Chrome? Are there any special considerations I have to make for the Internet Explorer family of browsers with regards to this particular jQuery method? I've done some googling on this but nothing obvious is coming up. One other note: I am currently using jQuery 1.3.2 due to some legacy scripts on the same site. I did try loading 1.4.2 and it had the same results on IE8

• TCP Socket.Connect is generating false positives

  I'm experiencing really weird behavior with the Socket.Connect method in C#. I am attempting a TCP Socket.Connect to a valid IP but closed port and the method is continuing as if I have successfully connected. When I packet sniffed what was going on I saw that the app was receiving RST packets from the remote machine. Yet from the tracing that is in place it is clear that the connect method is not throwing an exception. Any ideas what might be causing this? The code that is running is basically this IPEndPoint iep = new IPEndPoint(System.Net.IPAddress.Parse(m_ipAddress), m_port); Socket tcpSocket = new Socket(AddressFamily.InterNetwork, SocketType.Stream, ProtocolType.Tcp); tcpSocket.Connect(iep); To add to the mystery... when running this code in a stand alone console application, the result is as expected – the connect method throws an exception. However, when running it in the Windows Service deployment we have the connect method does not throw an exception. Edit in response to Mystere Man's answer How would the exception be swallowed? I have a Trace.WriteLine right above the .Connect method and a Trace.WriteLine right under it (not shown in the code sample for readability). I know that both traces are running. I also have a try catch around the whole thing which also does a Trace.Writeline and I don't see that in the log files anywhere. I have also enabled the internal socket tracing as you suggested. I don't see any exceptions. I see what appears to be successful connections. I am trying to identify differences between the windows service app and the diagnostic console app I made. Whereas with a solution like my first example, it would be beneficial as two integers fall under the same category.. • TouchXML to read in twitter feed for iphone app

I only require the following fields from the feed: name, description, time_zone and created_at I am successfully pulling out name and description.. however time_zone and created_at always are nil... • What's the most efficient way to load data from a file to a collection on-demand?

  I'm working on a java project that will allows users to parse multiple files with potentially thousands of lines. The information parsed will be stored in different objects, which then will be added to a collection. Since the GUI won't require to load ALL these objects at once and keep them in memory, I'm looking for an efficient way to load/unload data from files, so that data is only loaded into the collection when a user requests it. I'm just evaluation options right now. I've also thought of the case where, after loading a subset of the data into the collection, and presenting it on the GUI, the best way to reload the previously observed data. Re-run the parser/Populate collection/Populate GUI? or probably find a way to keep the collection into memory, or serialize/deserialize the collection itself? I know that loading/unloading subsets of data can get tricky if some sort of data filtering is performed. Let's say that I filter on ID, so my new subset will contain data from two previous analyzed subsets. This would be no problem is I keep a master copy of the whole data in memory. I've read that google-collections are good and efficient when handling big amounts of data, and offer methods that simplify lots of things so this might offer an alternative to allow me to keep the collection in memory. This is just general talking. The question on what collection to use is a separate and complex thing. Do you know what's the general recommendation on this type of task? I'd like to hear what you've done with similar scenarios. I can provide more specifics if needed.

• Is it possible to split HTML using DOMDocument?

  Using DOMDocument, is it possible to split a block of HTML by text wrapped in tags and those that are not, while maintaining the order? Sorry, if this doesn't make sense. My example should make it clear. Let's say I have the following block of HTML: text1<b style="color:pink">text2</b>text3<b>text4</b> <b style="font-weight:bold">text5</b> Is it possible create an array as such: array( [0] => text1 [1] => <b style="color:pink">text2</b> [2] => text3 [3] => <b>text4</b> [4] => [5] => <b style="font-weight:bold">text5</b> ) Below is my current working solution, which uses a regular expression, to split the HTML. $tokens = preg_split('/(<b\b[^>]*>.*?<\/b>)/i', $html, null, PREG_SPLIT_DELIM_CAPTURE); However, I always read that it is a bad idea to parse HTML using regular expressions, so was just wondering if there is a better way.

  Assuming a table of tags like the stackoverflow question tags: TagID (bigint), QuestionID (bigint), Tag (varchar) What is the most efficient way to get the 25 most used tags using LINQ? In SQL, a simple GROUP BY will do: SELECT Tag, COUNT(Tag) FROM Tags GROUP BY Tag I've written some LINQ that works: var groups = from t in DataContext.Tags group t by t.Tag into g select new { Tag = g.Key, Frequency = g.Count() }; return groups.OrderByDescending(g => g.Frequency).Take(25); Like, really? Isn't this mega-verbose? The sad thing is that I'm doing this to save a massive number of queries, as my Tag objects already contain a Frequency property that would otherwise need to check back with the database for every Tag if I actually used the property. So I then parse these anonymous types back into Tag objects: groups.OrderByDescending(g => g.Frequency).Take(25).ToList().ForEach(t => tags.Add(new Tag() { Tag = t.Tag, Frequency = t.Frequency })); I'm a LINQ newbie, and this doesn't seem right. Please show me how it's really done.

• Stop NSXMLParser Instance from Causing _NSAutoreleaseNoPool

  Hi Everyone: In my iPhone application, I have an instance of NSXMLParser that is set to a custom delegate to read the XML. This is then moved into its own thread so it can update the data in the background. However, ever since I have done this, it has been giving me a lot of _NSAutoreleaseNoPool warnings in the console. I have tried to add a NSAutoreleasePool to each of my delegate classes, however, this hasn't seemed to solve the problem. I have included my method of creating the NSXMLParser in case that is at fault. NSURL *url = [[NSURL alloc] initWithString:@"http://www.mywebsite.com/xmlsource.xml"]; NSXMLParser *xmlParser = [[NSXMLParser alloc] initWithContentsOfURL:url]; CustomXMLParser *parser = [[CustomXMLParser alloc] init]; parser.managedObjectContext = self.managedObjectContext; parser = [parser initXMLParser]; [xmlParser setDelegate:parser]; [NSThread detachNewThreadSelector:@selector(parse) toTarget:xmlParser withObject:nil]; If anyone has any ideas to get rid of this problem, I would really appreciate it. • How do you unit-test a method with complex input-output

  When you have a simple method, like for example sum(int x, int y), it is easy to write unit tests. You can check that method will sum correctly two sample integers, for example 2 + 3 should return 5, then you will check the same for some "extraordinary" numbers, for example negative values and zero. Each of these should be separate unit test, as a single unit test should contain single assert. What do you do when you have a complex input-output? Take a Xml parser for example. You can have a single method parse(String xml) that receives the String and returns a Dom object. You can write separate tests that will check that certain text node is parsed correctly, that attributes are parsed OK, that child node belongs to parent etc. For all these I can write a simple input, for example <root><child/></root> that will be used to check parent-child relationships between nodes and so on for the rest of expectations. Now, take a look at follwing Xml: <root> <child1 attribute11="attribute 11 value" attribute12="attribute 12 value">Text 1</child1> <child2 attribute21="attribute 21 value" attribute22="attribute 22 value">Text 2</child2> </root> In order to check that method worked correctly, I need to check many complex conditions, like that attribute11 and attribute12 belong to element1, that Text 1 belongs to child1 etc. I do not want to put more than one assert in my unit-test. How can I accomplish that?

• Abstracting the interpretation of MVC checkboxes values received by the FormsCollection object

  In ASP.NET MVC a checkbox is generated by the HtmlHelper code here: <%= Html.CheckBox("List_" + mailingList.Key, true) %> as this HTML: <input id="List_NEW_PRODUCTS" name="List_NEW_PRODUCTS" type="checkbox" value="true" /> <input name="List_NEW_PRODUCTS" type="hidden" value="false" /> In case you're wondering why is there an extra hidden field? - then read this. Its definitely a solution that makes you first think 'hmmmmm' but then you realize its a pretty elegant one. The problem I have is when I'm trying to parse the data on the backend. Well its not so much of a problem as a concern if anything in future were to change in the framework. If I'm using the built in binding everything is great - its all done for me. But in my case I'm dynamically generating checkboxes with unknown names and no corresponding properties in my model. So i end up having to write code like this : if (forms["List_RETAIL_NOTIFICATION"] == "true,false") { } or this: if (forms.GetValues("List_RETAIL_NOTIFICATION")[0] == "true") { } Both of which i still look at and cringe - especially since theres no guarantee this will always be the return value. I'm wondering if theres a way to access the layer of abstraction used by the model binders - or if I'm stuck with my controller 'knowing' this much about HTTP POST hacks. Yes I'm maybe being a little picky - but perhaps theres a better clever way using the model binders that I can employ to read dynamically created checkbox parameters. In addition i was hoping this this post might help others searcheing for : "true,false". Even though I knew why it does this I just forgot and it took me a little while to realize 'duh'. FYI: I tried another few things, and this is what I found : forms["List_RETAIL_NOTIFICATION"] evaluates to "true,false" forms.GetValues("List_RETAIL_NOTIFICATION")[0] evaluates to "true" (forms.GetValue("List_RETAIL_NOTIFICATION").RawValue as string[])[0] evaluates to "true" forms.GetValues("List_RETAIL_NOTIFICATION").FirstOrDefault() evaluates to "true"

  Hi Guys, I am pretty new to xml parsing and I am using XMLREADER to parse a huge file. Given the following XML (sample): <hotels> <hotel> <name>Bla1</name> </hotel> <hotel> <name>Bla2</name> </hotel> </hotels> And then the XMLREADER in PHP which pulls up the values to my Database: $reader = new XMLReader(); $reader->open('hotels.xml'); while ($reader->read()) { if ($reader->name == "name") { $reader->read(); mysql_query("INSERT INTO MyHotels (hotelName) VALUES (\"$reader->value\")"); } } $reader->close(); The problem is that I've got a single empty row between each of the parsed nodes!! [stuff:yes, listObjects[1][two]:thing2, listObjects[0][one]:thing, listThing[]:[1, 2, 3], action:myAction, controller:myController] I cannot figure out how to get at most of these values... I can get "yes" with params.stuff, but I cant do params.listThing.each{} or params.listObjects.each{} What am I doing wrong? This is somewhat inconvenient for my purposes of hacking around with the values. How would I get all these individual params back into a big groovy object of nested maps and lists? Maybe I am not doing what I want with jQuery?

  I am trying to programmatically filter Outlook contacts in the Contacts folder in Outlook 2010. I followed DASL filter rules, but it seems working for Find function and throws exception when I assign this filter to view.Filter = FilterString. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? The correct result would display filtered contacts in the existing contacts view. • Ant build script executing <sql> task using java code

  Any idea, why none of the debugging comments are printed once after executing the ANT build script's SQL task via java code? • How to achieve interaction between GUI class with logic class

  Im new to GUI programming, and haven't done much OOP. Im working on a basic calculator app to help me learn GUI design and to brush up on OOP. I understand that anything GUI related should be kept seperate from the logic, but Im unsure how to implement interaction between logic an GUI classes when needed i.e. basically passing variables back and forth... Im using TKinter and when I pass a tkinter variable to my logic it only seems to hold the string PY_VAR0. def on_equal_btn_click(self): self.entryVariable.set(self.entryVariable.get() + "=") calculator = Calc(self.entryVariable) self.entryVariable.set(calculator.calculate()) Im sure that im probably doing something fundamentally wrong and probabaly really stupid, I spent a considerable amount of time experimenting (and searching for answers online) but Im getting no where. • Getting directory's permissions via FTP

  I am trying to get permissions of a directory via FTP command "STAT" like this: $directory_list = ftp_raw($conn_id,'STAT '.$path); The above command lists entire directory contents , including files and subdirs. I then search the returned data array for the directory i need to check, and retrieve something like: drwxr-xr-x 3 user group 77824 May 13 10:15 Targetdir This will let me parse the drwxr-xr-x string to find out that the chmod of the Targetdir is 0755. Problem is, when the containing directory has 5000 files. A) It takes a very long time, and B) the ftp_raw function just returns empty array 1 in 10 runs. I don't know if it's timing out or what exactely is the problem. Is there are a better way to find directory's permissions ? Is there a way to limit number of retrieved fiels in "STAT" command ? I really need just the top 5 , no need for the other 4995 files. Does anyone know, why would my command NOT run 100% of the time? Why would it break ? I cannot even reproduce my error, it happens randomly.
