• Installing software after .wim image

  I have been looking all day into how to install software to a .wim image. I have a .wim image of a laptop that will be deplyed to 20 more. The image is pretty much good to go except I need to add a couple more drivers and a couple more applications. Is there a way to do this in the answer file? Do I have to deploy the image, install the drivers/application, sysprep, and recapture the image? Any information relating to this will be greatly appreciated. Leon ps I have only been using answer files and imagex. Would like to stick with this for the time being. I plan on using WDT and WDS when I have some time to learn about it.

• Re-assembling the RAID-5 array reboots my CentOS-5 machine

  I have 3 HDD's, each divided into 3 partitions. I had created a RAID-1 for boot partition md0 created from sda0, sdb0 and had also created two RAID-5 arrays: md1 created from sda1, sdb1, sdc1 md2 created from sda2, sdb2, sdc2 It used to work fine but one day I had to power off the machine (cold reboot) to get any response from the machine. After that, when the system started booting, it tried for a while to reconstruct the RAID arrays but after a few minutes it crashed silently. I booted the system in linux rescue mode from the DVD and tried to re-assemble the RAID devices manually. I was able to re-assemble md0 and md1 using: mdadm --assemble --scan /dev/md0 mdadm --assemble --scan /dev/md1 But when I try to re-assemble md2 using: mdadm --assemble --scan /dev/md2 the system reboots silently again. How can I fix this problem?

  How can I change my SQL Server 2008 license? I have the Enterprise Edition installed with a 90-day key and it will expire on 7 days. Two months ago, I purchased the final one but I don't know how to install/change to the new one. Is there a legal way to do it or I have to uninstall completely the application and reinstall it with the new license? • Bash script for mysql backup - error handling

  I'm trying to backup a bunch of MyISAM tables in a way that would allow me to rsync/rdiff the backup directory to a remote location. I've came up with a script that dumps only the recently changed tables and sets the date of the file so that rsync can pick up only the changed ones, but now I don't know how to do the error handling - I would like the script to exit with a non 0 value if there are errors. • Windows 7: enabling navigation of subfolders in pinned Start Menu folders

  I'm just about to move from Windows XP to Windows 7, and I'm struggling with some of the interface changes. In XP, I was able to throw a folder intoC:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menuand have it appear on the Start Menu, complete with the ability to navigate through subfolders. I've figured out how to pin a folder onto the Start Menu in Windows 7, which required a registry hack. However, I am unable to view the subfolders of the pinned folder without opening a new Windows Explorer window. Is there any way to replicate the old XP behavior I'm used to? I'd like to be only a single click away from these handful of application links and folders, since I use them all the time throughout the day.

  I run thttpd to serve some perl files. But for some reason the daemon is exiting every second or third day. Strangely it's always at 6.25 am.   Hi, I need a software or simply an excel worksheet to schedule my employees. I have 16 lifeguards and 9 headguards, two of which act as coordinators one day a week. All employees cannot work more than 40 hours a week because of the provincial law. Furthermore, they must staff 6 beaches. Everybeach has different staffing needs. Furthermore, I would like the application to be able to to take into considerations all employees needs such as vacation days and prefered beaches. Finally I would like to create a staff rotation between beaches to encourage employee motivation. Is there an open source application for my needs available out there ?

• Sql Server differential backup : Simple vs Full recovery model

  I need to better understand the backup process under SQL Server 2008. Since drive space is a kind of matter for us and we want to have a better disaster recovery solution, I decided that we will implement differential backups throughout the day (every hour). Am I right to think that if I keep the recovery model of my databases to Simple, the differential backup will be almost the same size as Full Backup (too big to make one every hour) ? I already tried to switch to Full recovery and it seemed to have fixed the issue (differential backups were way smaller). I heard that the recovery model must be set to Full to use Log backups (to the minute recovery etc., but we don't need that) but never about differential backups. So, is the recovery model really having an impact on differential backups or am I missing something ? Thank you

When I use vsphere clinet to connect VC.....I got a problem. the performance chart only can show "realtime "...... whatever I only want to view the chart , or I want to export the performance log . when i manually want to export performance, and I select the time to 1 hour ,1 day ,1 month, or from a to b. it showed "No performance data to report for selected objects" only select realtime can export data normally. Before I install Vsphere 4 , I install the SQL 2008 , used the schema in the install CD(I follow the step to create SQL DB for vSphere) Could anybody help me how to solve this problem? • Weird problem with connection from putty to ubuntu server via SSH

  Hello. I have an Ubuntu Server 9.10 box with sshd configured. I have two computers with Windows 7 professional and putty installed. Day ago, both computers was able to connect ubuntu server both via putty and plink. I have installed sun-java6-jre on ubuntu server, and now have a weird problem. First Windows 7 computer can still connect with both putty GUI and command-line plink. Second computer can connect via putty gui, but if i issue plink command that works perfectly on first computer: plink www.hostname.tk -i c:\users\username\documents\key\private.ppk I get login prompt, enter same username as on first computer, and receive following weird error message: bash: www.hostname.tk: command not found I can't see any difference between my Windows 7 computers :(. The ppk key used is same (i copied it multiple times both ways). hostname and username are same. Anyone have any ideas why such thing happens and what can i do in order to troubleshoot and fix it?

  http://mts.varicentondemand.com URL is correct. It worked the other day. URL to pointing at db server and db was edited this morning in 'jdbc.properties' file and is correct. Nothing wrong with the pointers in that sense. To pick up the changes 'Apache Tomcat 6 was restarted. Everything should work, but the page is not coming up. Tried URL form local as well as the web/app server itself. Where to check for clues?

• Windows XP waits for usb drive on almost every operation.

  Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Windows XP operating system, particularly with the USB device that is plugged in - 1TB WD My Book external drive. I haven't found any information about such behaviour when searching in Internet, so I have to ask You. The problem is: when I am using computer, especially during work (programming), when I try to access any information on a hard disk ("internal" one), Windows seems to "consult" it with the external drive. For example, when I open file selection dialog window, if I try to change directory, system activates external drive, reads something (I hear the disk's operational noise) and after some seconds of such pause it makes the operations I requested. There are many situations in which I can reproduce this behavior - opening My Computer, shutting down system, opening partition folder from My Computer - every operation involves the usage of external drive. Please understand me properly - this is not something that happens EVERY time, but at least "many" times a day. What causes such behavior and how can I "turn off" external drive when it's not needed?   I need to provide the recommended amount of RAM and disc space (divided in two partitions) so the customer can create an appropriate virtual machine to run Oracle. All I could find in the documentation was a brief listing with minimum RAM and typical/advanced install types. The virtual machine will run latest Oracle Standard Edition One (11g release 2 so far) under Windows Server 2008 x64 and will host a reasonably low traffic web application. How much RAM and disc must I ask for in order to be safe? (Feel free to ask for further details if I've omitted something relevant.) Update: Rough estimations: Database size: 10 MB after installation Growth rate: +3MB per day on average Size of database 'active' data: (not sure of what this means, there's not actual archive so I guess all data is current) Amount of data written per second in peak hours: a few KB Number of client sessions: 3 or 4 at most Frequency and response size of most heavy requests: some reports make heavy table JOINS that need up to 20 seconds to complete but they won't return more than a few thousand rows with plain text. The app also handles BLOBs (typical size from 50KB to 200KB)

  Brand new SBS 2011 install. I went to remove the DHCP server role. It went into a "Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer." Been there for hours. Finally, decided to power off and restart. After boot up, the same window and message appear and it just sits there spinning. "Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer." I'd love to get this installed before the end of the day but it doesn't look like that's possible. Any ideas on how to get passed this?

  I want my computer to start uTorrent at 4 o'clock in the morning, when I'm asleep. But the computer is a bit noisy so I put it to sleep mode every time I go to bed. I've tried creating a task in Task Scheduler with this parameters: Run whether user is logged in or not Daily At 4:00 every day Start a program "C:\Program Files\uTorrent\uTorrent.exe" Wake the computer to run this task I've tried to change the time to run to make sure the computer wakes up and runs uTorrent. But it doesn't. What am I doing wrong? Maybe I've lost something?

  I've got a value associated to each day, as such: 120530 70.1 120531 69.0 120601 69.2 120602 69.5 # and so on for 200 lines When plotting this data in gnuplot with lines, the data points are nicely connected. Unfortunately, at places over a week of data points can be missing. Gnuplot draws long lines over these intervals. How can I make gnuplot only connect points on consecutive days? Solutions that require preprocessing of the data are fine, as I already smooth it with a script. • rsyslog from Heroku drain creates empty log files

  I'm sending logs from my Heroku app to an rsyslog server, but the resulting log files seem to come up empty. The rsyslog configuration for receiving remote messages is as follows: $template RemoteDailyLog,"/var/log/remote/%hostname%/%$year%/%$month%/%$day%.log" :fromhost-ip, !isequal, "127.0.0.1" -?RemoteDailyLog & ~ My complete rsyslog configuration is available in this paste. This configuration appears to create the directories correctly. I see the Heroku app's logging hostname (of the form "d.xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx") appear in /var/log on the rsyslog host, which implies that log messages are successfully making it to the logging daemon, but the resulting logfiles are zero-size. I'm guessing the issue is with rsyslog, rather than Heroku, but I'm not sure where to look next.

  In line with the question about Best sysadmin accident, what's the worst accident you've been involved in? Unlike the previous question, I mean "worst" in the sense of most system damage or actual harm to people. I'll start with mine: We have two remote wiring closets that are at the end of a 100-foot corridor which has a metal grate for the floor. After we had Cat6 cable installed, the contractors cleaned up all the debris that dropped through the grating to the concrete 3 feet below. A co-worker and I entered the corridor to check on the progress one day but were distracted and didn't notice that a piece of grating had been moved aside. My buddy stepped into air and his chest slammed into the steel crossbar. He was winded and sore enough to take a couple days off, but luckily the steel beam had rounded edges and the size of the opening was such that he didn't smack his head into it or the floor below. Obviously we learned that areas where the floor is partially removed need to be flagged.

I'd appreciate any tips and tricks y'all can offer on finding a reputable place to colocate our racks. Are there any Web sites with customer reviews of data centers or should I just be asking around at techie events? Are unlimited bandwidth plans a gimmick or becoming the norm? Is it worth establishing a redundant set of machines at a second data center from Day One? Or just do offsite back-ups? Thanks for your suggestions.

  We are setting up our office network and would like to track all the websites visited by our employees. However, we would not like to use any proxy based solutions. Our work is highly dependent on applications in which you cannot configure a proxy. Hence, the approach we would like to follow is setting up a router inside a computer (something like this : http://www.techrepublic.com/article/configure-windows-server-2003-to-act-as-a-router/5844624) This will also allow us to attach multiple ethernet cards and have redundancy in internet connectivity with complete abstraction from the user about which connection is being used. But most importantly, since all the traffic will be going through the computer (configured as a router) I assume there will be a way to run packet analysis on all the request / responses being made. For example, list all the FTP servers connected to (port 21), give a graph of all the URLs visited per day by frequency. Is there already a software which does this ? Or is it possible to build something like this ?

• Only allow certain processes to connect to MS SQL

  I've lost the source code for a very old application that connects to a MS SQL-server for some SQL queries. Since the login is hard-coded in the application I can't change the username/password on the server. One day the password will probably be known to the users and we surely need to change it. But how? One idea is to only allow the old application to do the queries on the SQL server and block out any other application like the query analyzer etc. Can I set process permission somehow? The SQL server (MS SQL 2005) and application (C++) are on the same machine It's too costly to rewrite the old program Thanks for help!

• OpenGL support no longer available

  I've been using OpenGL hardware acceleration in programs such as Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Adobe After Effects CS4. I've noticed that recently the options for OpenGL previews are disabled because my graphics card seems to not support OpenGL. But that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. I know for a fact that my graphics card does have support for OpenGL and it worked before. I checked for driver updates just the other day. Anybody know what's going on? • Rainmeter customization issues, pretty basic

  I'll admit it; I'm new to using Rainmeter. What I want to do is create two panels (one left, the other on the right) that mirror one another. One side I want to work for the Eastern US while the other for the UK. I want to keep digital clocks, the same style etc., on both sides with their respective time zone. On top of this I want to have weather reports for the whole day (Current weather and temp, morning, afternoon, and night) for each location. However, I have not been able to find any skins which allow this. For whatever reason every time I try to load a skin for a clock I can only load it for one clock of that type and I'm having the same issue with the weather skins. Could anyone please tell me what skins I should look at and how to get a mirrored look?
