• how to include screen's session name in hardstatus?

  I use different screen sessions for different projects. Starting screen like screen -S project1. Now, I'd like to mention 'project1' in hardstatus line. Session name can be obtained from environment variable STY: STY=13539.project1. But how to get this into screen? I've tried backtick command and %` in hardstatus, but I can't seem to get it right. What I did: .screenrc: hardstatus string '%H:%`' backtick 0 30 30 echo $STY no luck, empty %`. backtick 0 30 30 sessionname still no luck, sessionname: Not found

• Fastest way to store/retrieve a dictionary - SQL, text file...?

  Hi all, This is a really really super dumb question, so I apologise, but I'd be grateful for some advice. I've got a text file of words and word frequencies. It's very large - theoretically we're talking millions of rows. I just want to retrieve values from the file, and do it as quickly and efficiently as possible (for a web app, in Django). My question is: what is the best way to store and retrieve the values? Should import them into SQL? Or keep the file and use grep? Or put them into a JSON dictionary...? Or some other way? Sorry for the dumb question, would be very grateful for advice!

• Server freeze restarted quickly so how do I fiond what went wrong?

  I have a SQL SERVER DB running on a windows server 2008 (VMWare) Yesterday I could not RDP to it so I ended some RDP sessions which were left logged in. This seemed to solve the problem. However last night I learned that the DB was inaccessible and unresponsive to customers. My colleague checked the server but again is unable to create an RDP connection. He then restarted the server and since it has been fine. Looking at the CPU Readings of the Server it spiked up to 100% before the original RDP problem .After I ended the extra seeions uit again dropped down to normal levels however before the time of the customer complaint it had rose to 100% again - before it had to be restarted. Is there anyway I can investigate which processes may have caused the problem in the first place. Would there be some kind of memory dump from when it was restarted. I would prefer to find out what is wrong now instead of waiting until it happens again.

• SSH disconnects active session after 20 minutes

  I’ve just set up a new Linux box (OpenSuSE 12.3 on VmWare). Now I stated that my SSH shell sessions are disconnected exactly after 20 minutes, clearly with activity. (Putty: “Network error: Software caused connection abort”) I already set Putty to send keep alives every 64 sec. In sshd_config, I set ClientAliveInterval 50 ClientAliveCountMax 2 and did a deamon reload. Didn’t help. About two minutes after the link breakdown, ssh reports to /var/log/messages: … … sshd[…]: Timeout, client not responding. … … sshd[…]: pam_unix(sshd:session): session closed for user root I don’t encounter this behaviour when connecting to other virtual machines, so I guess the problem isn’t in the network. Any help is appreciated.

• Hidden Periodic Screenshots on a corporate workstation?

  Can anyone recommend something that allows us to take hidden periodic screenshots of a workstation? We have a user who we believe is abusing his computer privileges. We have our suspicions that he may be playing games, etc. We need to monitor his screen without him being aware of it. Currently, the IT Department here is using Dameware Mini Remote Control to view his login sessions. But there isn't an option to set up automatic periodic screenshots. I'm hoping to find a tool that has this option and can be centrally managed as well. Thank you for your time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I want give web development using Python a shot, but I'm failing hard. I don't even know if I CAN run Python. The webpage for my web host says it supports all kinds of stuff, including Python. I've never touched anything CGI related and this does not appear to be a noob friendly area. • Get Python 2.7's 'json' to not throw an exception when it encounters random byte strings

  Trying to encode a a dict object into json using Python 2.7's json (ie: import json). The object has some byte strings in it that are "pickled" data using cPickle, so for json's purposes, they are basically random byte strings. I was using django.utils's simplejson and this worked fine. But I recently switched to Python 2.7 on google app engine and they don't seem to have simplejson available anymore. Now that I am using json, it throws an exception when it encounters bytes that aren't part of UTF-8. The error that I'm getting is: UnicodeDecodeError: 'utf8' codec can't decode byte 0x80 in position 0: invalid start byte It would be nice if it printed out a string of the character codes like the debugging might do, ie: \u0002]q\u0000U\u001201. But I really don't much care how it handles this data just as long as it doesn't throw an exception and continues serializing the information that it does recognize. How can I make this happen? What could be best solution where I want the users to get either the old value or the new value of d and nothing in between. I can think of a solution where a temp dictionary is constructed with a new data and assigned to 'd' but not sure how this works! Appreciate your ideas. Thanks

• How can I tell what command is running on the remote end of an ssh connection?

  Tl;dr - how do I find the name of the command (eg $BASH_COMMAND) running on the remote end of an ssh connection? ... My example setup is two tmux vertical panes, LH pane runs a local vim session with vertical split, RH pane runs an ssh session running vim, again with a vertical split. Using tmux-navigator I can navigate from left to right over the first 3 vim buffers, but the 4th (far right hand one) is inaccessible. The reason for this is that tmux-navigator tests the value of 'pane_current_command' and compares it to 'vim' before deciding which keystrokes to dispatch. On the right hand tmux pane, the current command is 'ssh' and not 'vim'. What I want to do is test for (pane_current_command =~ 'ssh'), and if so, examine the command that is running on the far side of the connection? I cannot find a way to get hold of this, so any suggestions would be welcome?   I'm submitting a form, sometimes I have some messages that I want to show to the user. I want those messages to jQuery fadeIn after they click on the submit button. Is it possible to achieve that if the submission doesn't involve any AJAX?   Hi, I am wanting to implement a multi-server specialised hosting environment. I currently have a cloud solution comprising of 3 centos boxes (2 lamp web servers, 1 mysql). What I am wanting to do is, implement a 5 server solution where they is 3 web servers, 1 mysql box and a fileshare. Basically I want the fileshare to host all the web files for the servers, the caching will remain on the individual servers and the sessions will be stored in mysql. So what I am asking is how do I map the servers to share the same "docroot"? Is it NFS? if so whats the best way about doing this? Thanks in advance.

• SSL Certificate only works when session active in Server 2008

  I have a web app that uses an installed certificate to send a web request to a 3rd party web service. This has worked for a long time on Windows Server 2003, but just recently we found a problem with it on 2008 installations. When logged into the server as the same user the App Pool uses, either locally or via remote desktop, the web app and it's secure 3rd party request works fine. However, when there are no user sessions open, the 3rd party request fails, as if the certificate were not attached to the web request. Any ideas?

• Multiple Windows Desktop areas for Full-Screen applications

  Is it possible to run multiple instances of Windows Explorer within a single user session, or configure multiple desktops that are portions of a screen? I don't know the best way to describe what I want to achieve, but here's a picture of what I've got: I've got a 4 monitor setup, 3 portrait and one landscape, and I am normally running a number of RDP sessions, outlook, chrome, a development environment or two, so on and so forth. Most of these applications support full-screen views which mostly or completely hide the window borders, but on the Windows Desktop they take up a full monitor to do so. What I want to do is have 7 "desktops", "regions", call them what you will, each of which is, for the purposes of applications running in it, a "full screen" environment: I'm not tied to Windows Explorer for this, in case it helps - a different window manager that will support this functionality would be a perfectly acceptable answer.

• Freeze during Battlefield 3 - Probable Hardware issue?

  my friend's notebook frequently freezes during BF3 sessions since ~1 1/2 months. It runs Win764Bit and he already reinstalled windows during the process, it didn't help. So we guess it might probably be a hardware issue. Now the question - which part of the hardware could effect a total freeze of the system WITHOUT getting a bluescreen? Or are there any known software issues he could also try? The hardware specs are: Acer 7745G Intel i7 720QM AMD Mobility 5850HD - Running Catalyst 11.6 now btw. (all drivers tested from 11.2 to 12.6 though) 4GB Ram 1.333MHz Oh and yeah, he just added that it crashes playing Diablo3 from time to time, too. Please help :)

  Django is to Python as Rails is to Ruby. What is the current front-runner for Erlang? Recent Erlang web activity has resulted in many new frameworks but they are all still moving targets. ErlyWeb is very far along but now seems to be dead. If you were to invest significant capital into a new web product (i.e. not a hobby, you use your own money and you use other's investment in you with expectation of payback), would you choose Erlang as a web platform? If so, what framework and technologies would you choose?

  I'm looking for an application that can manage (save/open) multiple Internet Explorer instances (to be precise nomerge sessions), host them in single window and arrange these instances e.g. in tabs, so in result you have double tab bar. In functionality it's similar to Remote Desktop Manager, where you can create Web session, but in embedded mode you cannot set the nomerge option. I've been searching the web, but with no results. So I put this question whether anyone know of such application or workaround. Or I have to write my own app.

Since the list of countries is above 200, i want to construct a database of the countries before the application loads. • Centralized way of organizing urls in Jersey?

  Forgive me if I am asking an obvious question (maybe I missed it in the docs somewhere?) but has anyone found a good way to organize their URLs in Jersey Java framework? I mean organizing them centrally in your Java source code, so that you can be sure there are not two classes that refer to the same Url. For example django has a really nice regex-based matching. I was thinking of doing something like an enum: enum Urls{ CARS ("cars"), CAR_INFO ("car", "{info}"); public Urls(String path, String args) ... } but you can imagine that gets out of hand pretty quickly if you have urls like: cars/1/wheels/3 where you need multiple path-ids interleaved with one another... Any tips?

  I'm learning about metaclasses in Python. I think it is a very powerful technique, and I'm looking for good uses for them. I'd like some feedback of good useful real-world examples of using metaclasses. I'm not looking for example code on how to write a metaclass (there are plenty examples of useless metaclasses out there), but real examples where you have applied the technique and it was really the appropriate solution. The rule is: no theoretical possibilities, but metaclasses at work in a real application. I'll start with the one example I know: Django models, for declarative programming, where the base class Model uses a metaclass to fill the model objects of useful ORM functionality from the attribute definitions. • Chrome logs me out of everything when I exit--tried cookie-related stuff already

  I've been using Chrome very successfully for a long time. It has always kept me logged in to all my sites even after exiting the app. Recently it started logging me out of everything when I exit Chrome. I've fooled around with all the various advanced cookie settings, and I've cycled through the options hoping that Chrome just needed a wakeup call or a reset or something. I've also deleted all the cookies in case a corrupted one is confusing Chrome. Nothing works! I see cookies when I log in, but they all go away when I exit Chrome. I've searched all over the place and seen only the standard answers relating to resetting cookies, local data, sessions, that sort of thing. Any Chrome gurus out there, please send a telepathic message to my browser asking it to resume its previous excellent behavior. Alternatively, you could suggest other possible solutions.

All examples just put all this app.get/post/put() handlers in app.js and it works just fine. This is good but if I have something more than simple HW Blog? Is it possible to do something like this: var app = express.createServer(); app.get( '/module-a/*', require('./module-a').urls ); app.get( '/module-b/*', require('./module-b').urls ); and // file: module-a.js urls.get('/:id', function(req, res){...}); // <- assuming this is handler for /module-a/1 In other words - I'd like something like Django's URLConf but in Node.js.

• How can I view my remote desktop that is on a subnet

  I have my ubuntu machine at work and I'd like to use remote desktop to work from home. However the remote machine is on a subnet and not directly connected to the internet. I am able to remotely connect through ssh to a server, from which I then ssh to my remote machine. This has been beneficial, however I am currently working on a GUI application so just the command line doesn't work so well. Any ideas? I have tried using ssh with the -X flag on both sessions, but this doesn't work. I am trying to connect from Windows Vista through a Mac server (isn't it a great setup?).
