  I am at SQLPASS 2012 and the event is going great. Here are few of the random photos and random news. We had participated in three different book signing event today. Our dear friend Tim Randney authored SQL Backup and Recovery Book. In the book signing event of Tim Radney I went ahead of the time and stood in the line. I was fortunate to receive the very first copy of the autographed book from Tim Radney. • Spell check web pages using Firefox plugin

  Having spelling mistakes on a website degrades customer experience by many times. Developers and website content creators spend good amount of time in going through the content manually to make sure that there are no spelling mistakes. At times few mistakes slip in as manual process is error prone. There are few web services and tool available in the market which provide automated spell checking services but they have certain limitations like – high fees to use the service, limitation on the number of pages they scan for errors, privacy issues, etc. What about a free tool that runs locally on your PC and spell checks unlimited web pages? Here comes Spell Checker extension for  Firefox web browser. This free Firefox extension is developed by  Gaurang, a Software Test Engineer based out in India. Once the extension is installed it adds a new context menu “Check Spelling” and a small icon to Add-On bar. To check spellings of a web page just click on the icon or the context menu and it will highlight all the errors on the page. By default SpellChecker extension uses US English dictionary to find spell mistakes and supports spell checking in other languages with installation of dictionaries.   Yesterday John Gruber wrote about the upped pixel density in the upcoming iPhone (960x480 instead of 480x320), and why Apple did this. He also wondered what the consequences for web developers would be.Now I happen to be deeply engaged in cross-browser research of widths and heights on mobile phones, and can state with reasonable certainty that in 99% of the cases these changes will not impact web developers at all.The remaining 1% could be much more tricky, but I expect Apple to cater to this problem...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • To write or not to write: Frameworks [closed]

  Today some friends and I started discussing frameworks.. Some of us strongly believe that in 99.9% of cases, writing a new framework is a bad idea. We believe that probably some of the millions of frameworks out there should fit our problem, and if not, some hack, API, or configuration should be enough. If not, we think that contributing to some framework, suggest features or something like that should be the best solution. The 0.1% is when none of the frameworks fit to our case. But, some of us say that it is better to have an "internal corporate framework" (for example), because it's faster to fix issues, creates a 100% fit with the app, because of the "learning" factor (when you improve your skills building a framework), etc. I think that to go out coding frameworks like there's no tomorrow is not the right way. I've seen a lot of small teams building their own framework just to spread the word: "we built our own framework, we rule, bro". Generally, the framework is crap, without any documentation, and only works for their own applications. Opinions are opinions, devs are devs, without the intention to start any kind of flame war, I ask: What do you think about that? What parameters you consider when building a framework? What do you think about all this?

• Almost at our first year anniversary!

  It has been a hectic first year at Vizioz and things are still going from strength to strength. 11 months ago I started Vizioz with zero capital investment in the middle of a recession, which to some may seem a daunting prospect but to others including myself it was the challenge I needed to make me want to get up in the morning :) I wanted to prove that even in the curent financial climate it is still possible to start a new business.We are still experiencing the normal growing pains of a small business but this is something we just need to work our way through, it is amazing how much paperwork and administration there is running a small business, office admin, insurance, vat and for the last few months PAYE.For the last 9 months we have shared an office with another small business called Little Big Ideas. They are a design agency working across a broad spectrum of design from branding, print and digital. Last month we decided to move offices to a larger office and now have room for 8 of us, so now we need a couple more clients to help produce enough work to fill the space and grow to the next level.As well as moving office 2 months ago I blogged about my first employee Colin starting work for me, he has picked up Umbraco very well and has mastered the art of good CSS design, as the majority of our clients are large multi-nationals they still require support for IE6 which as all web developers know is the nightmare of all web browsers.This month has seen the next step in the growth of Vizioz as I have taken on another PhD graduate called Pricilla, welcome to the team!This month we plan to launch our own website to enable us to showcase some of the sites we have built over the past 11 months and to allow potential clients to see what we can offer. We might still be relatively small but we have some great case studies to show and with two PhD graduates on the team we have great talent capable of producing complex and innovative solutions for our clients. As soon as we have launched out new website I will blog again about what the future holds for Vizioz and what we can offer our prospective clients as well as e obvious Umbraco CMS solutions.

• 255 Character limit on VLOOKUP

  Using excel 2003, the formula: =VLOOKUP(D1 ,A1:B135, 2) fails if the length of D1 exceeds 255 characters (i.e. the list has some text longer then 255 characters, D1 has the same text value, and VLOOKUP returns #VALUE!). MATCH seems to suffer from the same character limit. I cannot find any official confirmation of these limits, for example here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/vlookup-HP005209335.aspx or here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/excel-specifications-and-limits-HP005199291.aspx?CTT=3 I know that excel has a 255 limit on the length of text used in formulae, but it suggests connate should work (it does not in this case, and I am not using strings in the formula, but referencing another cell). Can somebody confirm that these limit exist (it is always possible I am doing something else wrong)? More importantly, does anyone know of a way around them? Thanks

You can obtain it using the PayPal buttons here. All in a good cause too. Creation of how-to information like this for functional or technical tasks, along with working examples about post-install steps, configurations and customizations, is what an applications community value-add is all about. Each community is different of course, an Adobe PhotoShop community might be more interested in templates. Great to see the needs of the community being met like this. • Magento - How to manage multiple base currencies and multiple payment gateways?

  I have two requirements to satisfy, I hope someone with more experience can help me sorting them out. Multiple Base Currencies My client wants to allow visitors to place orders in whatever currency they prefer, choosing from the ones he’ll configure. Magento only supports one Base Currency, and this is, obviously, not what I need. I checked the solution involving multiple websites, but I need a customer to be registered once and stay on the same website, not to switch from one to the other and have to register/log in on each. Manage multiple Payment Gateways per currency and per payment method This is another crucial requirement, and it’s tied to the first one. My client wants to “route” payments in different currencies to different accounts. He’ll thus have one for Euro, one for USD and one for GBP. Whenever a customer pays with one of these currencies, the payment gateway has to be chosen accordingly. Additionally, the gateway should be different depending on other rules. For example, if customer pays with a Debit Card, my client will have a payment gateway configured especially for it. If customer pays with MasterCard, the gateway will be different, and so on. The complication, in this case, arises from the fact that my client uses Realex Payments and, although it would be possible for him to open multiple accounts, the Realex module expects one single gateway. In a normal scenario, we would need up to six instead: Payment with Debit Card in Euro Payment with Credit Card in Euro Payment with Debit Card in US Dollars Payment with Credit Card in US Dollars Payment with Debit Card in GB Pounds Payment with Credit Card in GB Pounds This, of course, if he doesn’t decide to accept other payment methods, such as bank transfer, which would add one more gateway per currency. Is there a way to achieve the above in Magento? I never had such complicated requirements before, and I’m a bit lost. Thanks in advance for the help.

• Fedora 13 post security update boot problem

  Hello. About a month ago I installed a security update that had new Kernek 2.6.34.x from 2.6.33.x), this is when the problem occurred for the first time. After the install my computer would not boot at all, black screen without any visible hard drive activity (I gave it good 30 minutes on black screen, before took actions)... I poped in installation DVD and went in rescue mode to change back the boot option to old kernel (was just a guess where the problem was). After restart computer loaded just file, took a long time for it to start because of SELinux targeted policy relabel is required. Relabeling could take very long time depending on file size. I assumed that the update got messed up somehow and continued working with modified boot option. Couple of days ago, there was another kernel update. I installed it and same problem as before. This rules out corrupted update theory... Black screen right after 'BIOS' screen before OS gets loaded. I had to rescue system again... Below is copy of my grub.conf file. • Ubuntu 10.04 not detecting multiple monitors

  I have 2 graphics cards, the output from the lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] I have one monitor connected to the 4850 and 2 connected to the 4350. However when I go into System Preferences Monitors the only monitor shown is the one connected to the 4850. Is there something I need to enable for it to be able to use the other card? How do I get this to work. Thanks. • Recommendation for e-mail forwarding

  We currently have a provider that we use to primarily forward our e-mails to both a hosted Exchange site and to outside e-mail addresses. We have a large # of forwards set-up (maybe 500). They work fine for us but the bandwidth costs are a getting pretty expensive (approx 80GB in email a month) so we're looking for a less expensive alternative (it costs us nearly $150/mo). I've looked at just hosting this here via a PostFix server and one of the nice front-ends available for it. However, I'm not thrilled with the prospect of being responsible for maintaining yet another server, backups, network connectivity, etc. So I'm leaning towards having this hosted by someone else if possible. Does anyone have any recommendations for hosting providers? Are there some I should stay away from?

• New Visual Studio 2010 Extension - Collapse Solution

  If your team has recently upgraded to Visual Studio 2010, take a second to check out the new Extension Manager. You can use it to browse through or install tons of tools, controls, or templates from the Visual Studio Gallery. My friend, Cory Cissell, and I recently teamed up and created an extension of our own called "Collapse Solution". It adds an option called Collapse Solution to the context menu of the solution node in the solution explorer. It also adds an option called Collapse Project to the context menu of each project node in the solution explorer. When that option is clicked, it will walk through the solution explorer tree and collapse any expanded child nodes in that section (projects, folders, code behind files, designer files, etc.). I use to have an add-in that did this in Visual Studio 2008 but it wasn't compatible when we upgraded to 2010 so we decided to write our own. The old tool was also packaged with a bunch of other junk that we didn't need so we figured it would be a much cleaner tool if it was broken off into its own extension. There's no need to install extra tools if you don't really need them. • Different keyboard layouts at same time for different devices

  I have a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard, and I am using it as a portable but also desktop computer. In order to acheive this, I bought a VGA adapter and I am using it with an external mouse, keyboard, and monitor. The problem is, the external keyboard layout is different from the one on the macbook. It is set to US qwerty (its a logitech G15), and because of that, most keys behave differently than they should. Question is, how can I set up different layouts at same time for different devices? I want US for external keyboard and PT for the default one.

The study will take place via LiveMeeting or at a usability lab in Redmond, depending on your preference. We will walk you through an example of debugging GPGPU code in Visual Studio with you giving us step-by-step feedback. ("Is this what you would you expect?", "Are we showing you the things that would help you?", "How would you improve this") The walkthrough utilizes a “paper” version of our current design. • A bounce-rate attack to manipulate SEO ?

  This is a question to experienced people that might help us shed some light on the issue. We noticed a very strange behavior on our site, in Google Analytics. Some dude from Finland, namely, from Kouvola city is hitting one of our pages - only one page on our site, 'bout a hundred times per day, all with an average bounce rate of 90%+... This is causing our overall bounce rate to go up by 1 to 3% per day... which is very disturbing.. since we're trying to do our best in order to keep it as low as possible. And obviously having it jumped from ~24% to 27%, just because of that crazy dude is not making us happy at all... We tried implementing a geo-targeted script in order to catch this particular visitor and deliver him a juicy message, and it seemed like it helped in the beginning, it has stopped for a day or two, but now he's back... The geo-targeted script was also logging all IP addresses for page requests originating from Finland in order to find out more details and (in order to block them on the server level, later).. but thing is, it was all mainly cable or DSL connections with various, but not constantly repeating IPs... we are all wondering what is he up to really ? I think that this page should be kept updated with ideas on how to combat this and perhaps someone could also shed light on what it might be ? What is the reason for doing this "bounce-rate attack", as I call it?
