• Windows XP waits for usb drive on almost every operation.

  Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Windows XP operating system, particularly with the USB device that is plugged in - 1TB WD My Book external drive. I haven't found any information about such behaviour when searching in Internet, so I have to ask You. The problem is: when I am using computer, especially during work (programming), when I try to access any information on a hard disk ("internal" one), Windows seems to "consult" it with the external drive. For example, when I open file selection dialog window, if I try to change directory, system activates external drive, reads something (I hear the disk's operational noise) and after some seconds of such pause it makes the operations I requested. There are many situations in which I can reproduce this behavior - opening My Computer, shutting down system, opening partition folder from My Computer - every operation involves the usage of external drive. Please understand me properly - this is not something that happens EVERY time, but at least "many" times a day. What causes such behavior and how can I "turn off" external drive when it's not needed? • Weird problem with connection from putty to ubuntu server via SSH

  Hello. I have an Ubuntu Server 9.10 box with sshd configured. I have two computers with Windows 7 professional and putty installed. Day ago, both computers was able to connect ubuntu server both via putty and plink. I have installed sun-java6-jre on ubuntu server, and now have a weird problem. First Windows 7 computer can still connect with both putty GUI and command-line plink. Second computer can connect via putty gui, but if i issue plink command that works perfectly on first computer: plink www.hostname.tk -i c:\users\username\documents\key\private.ppk I get login prompt, enter same username as on first computer, and receive following weird error message: bash: www.hostname.tk: command not found I can't see any difference between my Windows 7 computers :(. The ppk key used is same (i copied it multiple times both ways). hostname and username are same. Anyone have any ideas why such thing happens and what can i do in order to troubleshoot and fix it?

  I want my computer to start uTorrent at 4 o'clock in the morning, when I'm asleep. But the computer is a bit noisy so I put it to sleep mode every time I go to bed. I've tried creating a task in Task Scheduler with this parameters: Run whether user is logged in or not Daily At 4:00 every day Start a program "C:\Program Files\uTorrent\uTorrent.exe" Wake the computer to run this task I've tried to change the time to run to make sure the computer wakes up and runs uTorrent. But it doesn't. What am I doing wrong? Maybe I've lost something?

• new SBS 2011 Standard problems

  Brand new SBS 2011 install. I went to remove the DHCP server role. It went into a "Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer." Been there for hours. Finally, decided to power off and restart. After boot up, the same window and message appear and it just sits there spinning. "Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer." I'd love to get this installed before the end of the day but it doesn't look like that's possible. Any ideas on how to get passed this?

  I'm sending logs from my Heroku app to an rsyslog server, but the resulting log files seem to come up empty. The rsyslog configuration for receiving remote messages is as follows: $template RemoteDailyLog,"/var/log/remote/%hostname%/%$year%/%$month%/%$day%.log" :fromhost-ip, !isequal, "127.0.0.1" -?RemoteDailyLog & ~ My complete rsyslog configuration is available in this paste. This configuration appears to create the directories correctly. I see the Heroku app's logging hostname (of the form "d.xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx") appear in /var/log on the rsyslog host, which implies that log messages are successfully making it to the logging daemon, but the resulting logfiles are zero-size. I'm guessing the issue is with rsyslog, rather than Heroku, but I'm not sure where to look next.

  I've got a value associated to each day, as such: 120530 70.1 120531 69.0 120601 69.2 120602 69.5 # and so on for 200 lines When plotting this data in gnuplot with lines, the data points are nicely connected. Unfortunately, at places over a week of data points can be missing. Gnuplot draws long lines over these intervals. How can I make gnuplot only connect points on consecutive days? Solutions that require preprocessing of the data are fine, as I already smooth it with a script.   In line with the question about Best sysadmin accident, what's the worst accident you've been involved in? Unlike the previous question, I mean "worst" in the sense of most system damage or actual harm to people. I'll start with mine: We have two remote wiring closets that are at the end of a 100-foot corridor which has a metal grate for the floor. After we had Cat6 cable installed, the contractors cleaned up all the debris that dropped through the grating to the concrete 3 feet below. A co-worker and I entered the corridor to check on the progress one day but were distracted and didn't notice that a piece of grating had been moved aside. My buddy stepped into air and his chest slammed into the steel crossbar. He was winded and sore enough to take a couple days off, but luckily the steel beam had rounded edges and the size of the opening was such that he didn't smack his head into it or the floor below. Obviously we learned that areas where the floor is partially removed need to be flagged.

I'd appreciate any tips and tricks y'all can offer on finding a reputable place to colocate our racks. Are there any Web sites with customer reviews of data centers or should I just be asking around at techie events? Are unlimited bandwidth plans a gimmick or becoming the norm? Is it worth establishing a redundant set of machines at a second data center from Day One? Or just do offsite back-ups? Thanks for your suggestions.

• OpenGL support no longer available

  I've been using OpenGL hardware acceleration in programs such as Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Adobe After Effects CS4. I've noticed that recently the options for OpenGL previews are disabled because my graphics card seems to not support OpenGL. But that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. I know for a fact that my graphics card does have support for OpenGL and it worked before. I checked for driver updates just the other day. Anybody know what's going on? • Only allow certain processes to connect to MS SQL

  I've lost the source code for a very old application that connects to a MS SQL-server for some SQL queries. Since the login is hard-coded in the application I can't change the username/password on the server. One day the password will probably be known to the users and we surely need to change it. But how? One idea is to only allow the old application to do the queries on the SQL server and block out any other application like the query analyzer etc. Can I set process permission somehow? The SQL server (MS SQL 2005) and application (C++) are on the same machine It's too costly to rewrite the old program Thanks for help!

  We are setting up our office network and would like to track all the websites visited by our employees. However, we would not like to use any proxy based solutions. Our work is highly dependent on applications in which you cannot configure a proxy. Hence, the approach we would like to follow is setting up a router inside a computer (something like this : http://www.techrepublic.com/article/configure-windows-server-2003-to-act-as-a-router/5844624) This will also allow us to attach multiple ethernet cards and have redundancy in internet connectivity with complete abstraction from the user about which connection is being used. But most importantly, since all the traffic will be going through the computer (configured as a router) I assume there will be a way to run packet analysis on all the request / responses being made. For example, list all the FTP servers connected to (port 21), give a graph of all the URLs visited per day by frequency. Is there already a software which does this ? Or is it possible to build something like this ?

• Rainmeter customization issues, pretty basic

  I'll admit it; I'm new to using Rainmeter. What I want to do is create two panels (one left, the other on the right) that mirror one another. One side I want to work for the Eastern US while the other for the UK. I want to keep digital clocks, the same style etc., on both sides with their respective time zone. On top of this I want to have weather reports for the whole day (Current weather and temp, morning, afternoon, and night) for each location. However, I have not been able to find any skins which allow this. For whatever reason every time I try to load a skin for a clock I can only load it for one clock of that type and I'm having the same issue with the weather skins. Could anyone please tell me what skins I should look at and how to get a mirrored look?

• Any good software to help me memorize passwords?

  I'm using KeePass(X) and other tools to keep most of my passwords. However, it turns out, there is still about half a dozen passwords I'm using on regular basis that I would prefer to just remember. So, do you people know of any good programs, preferably open-source, to train yourself using a particular password and thus to memorize it? I know I can remember a 96-bit entropy password rather well if I practice entering it 3 days, 5 minutes for each day, I just want a good software to simplify the process and exclude the possibility of shouldering or otherwise leaking the password.

• Remote desktop session ends abruptly with a "protocol error"

  Intermittently we get a problem where a remote desktop session will get disconnected with the error message “Because of a protocol error, this session will be disconnected. Please try connecting to the remote computer again.” We are getting this with one server only which is running Windows Server 2008, connecting with Windows 7 clients. The session itself stays running, you just get disconnected, and you can try and reconnect. Sometimes you get in for a while then it will kick you out. We are connecting from Windows 7 clients. We have tried connecting using Cord on a Mac and this works fine, so it's not like the session itself is corrupted. One problem is that there are some critical applications running under the session (I know, let's not discuss the idiocy of that), so we cannot reset the session in any way during the working day – so any diagnostics must have minimum impact.   I want to install Sphinx 2.0.8 from source on CentOS 5.6 with PostgreSQL 9.2.4 my server type : Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.18-348.6.1.el5 #1 SMP Tue May 21 15:29:55 EDT 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux. First, i compile with : ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/sphinx --with-pgsql --without-mysql --with-pgsql-libs=/var/lib/pgsql/9.2/data/ --with-pgsql-includes=/usr/pgsql-9.2/include/ then it seems work, but after i run make errors appeared /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lpq I have installed postgresql92-devel and libs also libpqxxx and worked with that error all day long but i am not solve that yet. • Plesk on Windows Server 2008 memory usage

  I have a server running IIS and Plesk. There is a problem every day now in which the memory usage of PleskControlPanel.exe and w3wp.exe slowly increases. And at some point all of the sites hosted on the server go down. Restarting Plesk through its panel will reset its memory usage for a while, and restarting IIS will make it last even longer, but there is still the constant memory climbing problem. I cannot see anything by looking through the event viewer. Has anyone ever seen anything like this with Plesk on Windows? Thanks for any help.

• Trusted Root certificates regularly disappear on Windows 7

  I've installed several self-signed certificates on my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 machine for development purposes. One was installed into Trusted Root CAs and 2 were installed into My Certificates and Trusted People. Every day or two the certificate installed into Trusted Root CAs disappears and I have to re-install it! This is annoying the hell out of me. Why is it happening and how do I stop it? The other certificates (installed into other stores) do not disappear. My first thought was some kind of Group Policy, but my machine is not part of a domain - though it does obtains its IP address from a corporate DHCP server, so I'm not sure if they can somehow still manage to apply Group Policy to me.

• Transfer files using ssh

  Good day to all. I am using ssh (winSCP) to transfer some files from a server to my workstation. The problem is that at some files I get disconnected. Always same files. I am the owner of the directory so I guess the file permissions is not a problem. (Also I set the permissions to 777). Is there a size limit or something like that? Thank you for your time. Protocol is SFTP, server is 32bit machine. Files are 100MB tops. Added: Worked with filezilla using ftp. This temporarily fix the problem but is not exactly a solution since maybe next time I won't have root access to create a ftp account

• Netgear router-speed problem after XBox use

  When my son is at my place at the weekend, he plays XBox Live over the internet, using my wireless network (Netgear 'g' type router). This usually thrashes & crashes the router to the extent I have to hard-boot it to get it working again. However, after this weekend, on my two laptops, I'm left with the problem that the router is working, but I'm only getting 0.38Mbps out of it, at all times of the day. I've tried hard-booting the router, but no difference. Could this be a knock-on effect of the Xbox use? I can't believe the router could be damaged, but working slower? Is that possible? Tiscali haven't come back to me yet on any 'network' issues. Thanks in advance

• Computer Randomly Restarts (no crash dump)

  Hey everyone this is my first time here, so, my computer got pulled out of his place the other day by accident and it never got back to working decently ever again. I just stopped using it because everytime i power it on, it restarts. Some times it doesn't even reach the desktop, others it even allows me to run a game or something. It gets really random. Today i was trying my last attempt before sending it to fix and it ran fine for 40 minutes but as i tried to run a game the screen got really messeud up full of colorful lines and stuff and i'm assuming it had to do with the graphics card. Altho, my question is, what can be causing all this restart thingie? Can it be just the Power Supply failing me and hence, not giving enough power to make the graphic card go for instance? • OEM to Virtual Machine for Diaster Recovery / Business Continuity.

  Hello, We are trying to deploy a Business Continuity Appliance (Zenith BDR) for a customer and one of the features is the ability to bring up the failed server in a virtual machine on the appliance. Great feature. However, the customer has OEM version of Server 2003 on that server and it comes up requiring immediate re-activation since it is now on different hardware. We would be happy with a 2-3 day grace period which is what we expected, but this isn't happening. What are the solutions without having to purchase another VLK copy of Server 2008 and re-installing the server with that license just so we can set this thing up.
