• Are fluid websites worth making anymore?

  Hey guys, I'm making a website now and I am trying to decide if I should make it fluid or not. Fixed width websites are much easier to make and also much easier to make them appear consistent. To be honest though, I personally prefer looking at fluid websites that stretch to the full width of my monitor. My question comes from the fact that in most modern browsers you can hold control and scroll your mouse wheel to basically resize any website. So is creating a fluid website worth the trouble?

• FileSystemWatcher keeping parent directory

  I am using FileSystemWatcher to monitor a folder, and it seems to be preventing the folder's parent from being deleted. For example, I have the file structure: C:\Root\FolderToWatch\... with the FileSystemWatcher targeting FolderToWatch. While my program is running, if I go to Windows Explorer and try to delete Root, I get an error "Cannot delete Root: access is denied". However, if I delete FolderToWatch FIRST, I can then delete Root without incident. (Needless to say, if the FileSystemWatcher is not enabled, I have no problem deleting either folder.) What gives? Why does the FileSystemWatcher hang onto it's target's parent like that? How (if possible) can I stop this behavior? I would like the user to be able to freely move or delete directories in Windows Explorer.

  Hello everyone, I am designing a transportation agency/workflow system, and it including 3 types of people, customer who requests to transport some stuff, drivers who deliver the stuff, and truck manager who manages transport source/destination truck coordination and communicates/organizes drivers. The system is expected to be a web site, and 3 kinds of people could use the web site to submit request, accept request, monitor status of specific stuff transportation, etc. The web site is more like an open agency or a workflow system. I am wondering whether there are any existing technologies, tools or projects (better to be open source, but not a must) which I could build my application faster based on? • Weird behavior of an ASP.NET MVC application - track of errors

  Before migrating from ASP.NET WebForms I had a very good way to monitor all my application errors in the Events Log (Administrative Tools). But now after moving to asp.net MVC, all I get is the same mistake occurring every minute (something about Site Master). I know it's not right, because there are other mistakes, but they are not displayed. I purposefully put in division by zero operation, and it didn't track it. I had to implement the OnException method of a controller, and send e-mails with error details which is very inconvenient. How can I solve this problem?

• WeakReferences are not freed in embedded OS

  I've got a strange behavior here: I get a massive memory leak in production running a WPF application that runs on a DLOG-Terminal (Windows Embedded Standard SP1) that behaves perfectly fine if I run it localy on a normal desktop (Win7 prof.) After many unsucessful attempts to find any problem I put one of those directly beside my monitor, installed the ANTs MemoryProfiler and did one hour test run simulating user operations on both the terminal and my development PC. Result is, that due to some strange reasons the embedded system piles up a huge amount of WeakReference and EffectiveValueEntry[] Objects. Here are are some pictures: Development (PC): And the terminal: Just look at the class list... Has anyone seen something like this before and are there known solutions to this? Where can I get help? (PS the terminals where installed with images prepared for .net4)

• jquery simplemodal question (about window overflow)

  I noticed that if the height of the window is too small (meaning that the modal is taller than the window is), then even scrolling up or down won't reveal more of the modal, since it is constantly centering itself to the center of the window. Is there a good way of changing this? I have a tall modal that if someone's using a short monitor it may cause problems. Not to mention just general usability. I would guess that somewhere in the code you can test for if the window height is less than the modal to not worry about centering it vertically? Ideas?

• What would be the light way to render a JSP page without an App/Web Server

  First, some background: I will have to work on code for a JSP that will demand a lot of code fixing and testing. This JSP will receive a structure of given objects, and render it according to a couple of rules. What I would like to do, is to write a "Test Server" that would read some mock data out of a fixtures file, and mock those objects into a factory that would be used by the JSP in question. The target App Server is WebSphere and I would like to code, change, code in order to test appropriate HTML rendering. I have done something similar on the past, but the JSP part was just calling a method on a rendering object, so I created an Ad Hoc HTTP server that would read the fixture files, parse it and render HTML. All I had to do was run it inside RAD, change the HTML code and hit F5. So question pretty much goes down to: Is there any stand alone library or lightweight server (I thought of Jetty) that would take a JSP, and given the correct contexts (Request, Response, Session, etc.) render the proper HTML?

• Application Design: Single vs. Multiple Hits to the DB

  I'm building a service that performs a set of configured activities based on the type of request that it receives. Each activity involves going to the database and retrieving/updating some kind of information. The logic for each activity can be generalized and re-used across different request types. The activities may need to participate in a transaction for the duration of the servicing the request. One option, I'm considering is having each activity maintain its own access to DAL/database. This fully encapsulates the activity into a stand-alone re-usable piece, but hitting the database multiple times for one request doesn't seem like a viable option. I don't really know how to easily implement the concept of a transaction across the multiple activities here either. The second option is to encapsulate ALL the activities into one big activity and hit the database once. But this does not allow re-use and configuration of these activities for different requests. Does anyone have any suggestions and input about what should be the best way to approach my problem? Thanks for any help.

  VB 2008 .NET 3.5 Suppose we have two classes, Order and OrderItem, that represent some type of online ordering system. OrderItem represents a single line item in an Order. One Order can contain multiple OrderItems, in the form of a List(of OrderItem). Public Class Order Public Property MyOrderItems() as List(of OrderItem) End Property End Class It makes sense that an OrderItem should not exist without an Order. In other words, an OrderItem class should not be able to be instantiated on its own, it should be dependent on an Order class to contain it and instantiate it. However, the OrderItem should be public in scope so that it's properties are accessible to other objects. So, the requirements for OrderItem are: Can not be instantiated as a stand alone object; requires Order to exist. Must be public so that any other object can access it's properties/methods through the Order object. e.g. Order.OrderItem(0).ProductID. OrderItem should be able to be passed to other subs/functions that will operate on it. How can I achieve these goals? Is there a better approach?

  Hi, I have a piece of code where I send a file content over tcp/ip channel. There are times when this connection hangs causing entire application to freeze. Is there a way for my main thread to spawn a worker thread and monitor that worker thread. If worker thread succeeds, well and good. If it hangs , the main thread could log error message and continue. How can I simulate in my test code that a worker thread is hanging. please let me know what could the code look like. I am using C# Visual studio 2002.

• Threading vs single thread

  Is it always guaranteed that a multi-threaded application would run faster than a single threaded application? I have two threads that populates data from a data source but different entities (eg: database, from two different tables), seems like single threaded version of the application is running faster than the version with two threads. Why would the reason be? when i look at the performance monitor, both cpu s are very spikey ? is this due to context switching? what are the best practices to jack the CPU and fully utilize it? I hope this is not ambiguous.

  Hi everyone! I'm currently reading Effective Perl Programming (2nd edition). I have come across a piece of code which was described as being poorly written, but I don't yet understand what's so bad about it, or how it should be improved. It would be great if someone could explain the matter to me. Here's the code in question: sub sum_values_per_key { my ( $class, $dsn, $user, $password, $parameters ) = @_; my %results; my $dbh = DBI->connect( $dsn, $user, $password, $parameters ); my $sth = $dbh->prepare( 'select key, calculate(value) from my_table'); $sth->execute(); # ... fill %results ... $sth->finish(); $dbh->disconnect(); return \%results; } The example comes from the chapter on testing your code (p. 324/325). The sentence that has left me wondering about how to improve the code is the following: Since the code was poorly written and accesses DBI directly, you'll have to create a fake DBI object to stand in for the real thing. I have probably not understood a lot of what the book has so far been trying to teach me, or I have skipped the section relevant for understanding what's bad practice about the above code... • COMET chat application - IIS7 slows down over time

  I have built a chat application which uses this code to push messages to clients (web pages) and to monitor online users and their information. Basically, the code creates and manages a custom thread pool for maintaining the list of connected users & their state. The application was hosted on a shared hosting account (IIS6), and worked fine. After moving the site (ASP.Net App) to a dedicated virtual server it seems I have a problem where IIS7 gets slower and slower as time passes, and my only "solution" is to restart IIS. I am trying to look at the performance counters and have do idea on which one to look.

• What does a linux device need to be seen by Hal?

  I'm trying to learn about device drivers on Linux Kernel, for that I've created three modules with: A bus type A device driver A fake device that does nothing now, only is registered Everything works fine, I can load the bus, the driver and the module that creates the device. Everything appears on sysfs, including the link between the device and the device driver that indicates that they are binded.   I am using an AXObserver to monitor when a window is closed. In the callback, I am just raising an NSNotification. All working well. What is the correct syntax for attaching some user data as refcon? The working call looks like this: err6 = AXObserverAddNotification(observerTable, tableRef, kAXUIElementDestroyedNotification, nil); and the callback specified when I create the observer has the signature: static void cbTableClosed (AXObserverRef observer, AXUIElementRef element, CFStringRef notification, void *refcon) I want to replace refcon with an object of my own, but don't know how to change either line. The obvious objective-c type changes through up warnings.

• Regular expression to match HTML table row ( <tr> ) NOT containing a specific value

  I'm using Notepad++ to clean up a long and messy HTML table. I'm trying to use regular expressions even if I'm a total noob. :) I need to remove all the table rows that doesn't contain a specific value (may I call that substring?). After having all the file contents unwrapped, I've been able to use the following regular expression to select, one by one, every table row with all its contents: <tr>.+?</tr> How can I improve the regular expression in order to select and replace only table rows containing, somewhere inside a part of them, that defined substring? I don't know if this does matter but the structure of every table row is the following (I've put there every HTML tag, the dots stand for standard content/values) <tr> <td> ... </td> <td> ... </td> <td> <a sfref="..." href="...">!! • .NET Windows Service, threads and garbage collection (possible memory leaks)

  I am developing a .NET Windows service that is creating a couple of threads and then uses these threads to send print jobs to printers (there is a thread for each printer). I have some issues which sometimes can be fixed by restarting the service. Some issues also arise when the service has been running for a while. This makes me suspect a possible memory leak. So, a couple of questions: Would a garbage collector collect an object if it was created inside a thread, or will the object exist until the thread is stopped/terminated? What tools can I use to monitor the amount of memory used by a Windows service and by a thread that I am starting programmatically?

• Question about how to implement a c# host application with a plugin-like architecture

  I want to have an application that works as a Host to many other small applications. Each one of those applications should work as kind of plugin to this main application. I call them plugins not in the sense they add something to the main application, but because they can only work with this Host application as they depend on some of its services. My idea was to have each of those plugins run in a different app domain. The problem seems to be that my host application should have a set of services that my plugins will want to use and from what is my understanding making data flow in and out from different app domains is not that great of a thing. On one hand I'd like them to behave as stand-alone applications(although, as I said, they need to use lots of times the host application services), but on the other hand I'd like that if any of them crashes, my main application wouldn't suffer from it. What is the best (.NET) approach to this kind of situation? Make them all run on the same AppDomain but each one in a different Thread? Use different AppDomains? One for each "plugin"? How would I make them communicate with the Host Application? Any other way of doing this? Although speed is not an issue here, I wouldn't like for function calls to be that much slower than they are when we're working with just a regular .NET application. Thanks

• Where can I get free real-time stock data?

  Does anyone know of a way to obtain free real-time stock data or near real-time stock data? I'd like to do this since I'm interested in the financial market, not for use in investment applications which is why I'm looking for something free. I've tried the Perl module Finance::YahooQuote but some of the fields such as last trade time appear to be broken. I've looked at the historical data but it doesn't fit my needs since I'd like to monitor the movements of the markets and stocks during the trading day not just open and close. I've also looked at http://www.opentick.com but they aren’t accepting new accounts and I can't find a timeline for when their network upgrade will be complete.

  I have used the 2to3 utility to convert code from the command line. What I would like to do is run it basically as a unittest. Even if it tests the file rather than parts(funtions, methods...) as would be normal for a unittest. It does not need to be a unittest and I don't what to automatically convert the files I just want to monitor the py3 compliance of files in a unittest like manor. I can't seem to find any documentation or examples for this. An example and/or documentation would be great. Thanks

  Hello, can you please help me with the following questions... If I need a virtual printer that will convert a PostScript stream to a different format, do I have to implement a virtual printer from scratch or implement a rendering plug-in? The rendering plug-in seems to support only certain customizations. Also the data invariably goes to the spooler which is not needed in this case. If I implement a virtual printer driver does it completely replace the Microsoft PostScript Driver or the Microsoft Universal Driver? Since my driver is virtual, does it matter if I write a PostScript compliant or a Universal Driver compliant one? Any other method to convert a printed document to a custom document format apart from implementing a virtual printer driver? Can I hook on as a port monitor or something? From what I could understand I guess not.

• What is the process involved in viewing a webservice in a browser from within visual studio?

  I have created a new VS2008 ASP.Net Web service project, with the default name WebService1. If I right click on the Service1.asmx file and select 'View in Browser' what are the processes that go on to make this happen? I am asking because I have a situation where when I run this from a visual studio project started in our development shell (which sets up a common build environment) I cannot get the web service to show up in the browser. It starts the asp.net development server and creates a single file: C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\root\c43ddc22\268ae91b\hash\hash.web but when I start it from a stand alone project i get a whole slew of files in here: C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\root\edad4eee\d198cf0e\App_Web_defaultwsdlhelpgenerator.aspx.cdcab7d2.vicgkf94.dll C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\root\edad4eee\d198cf0e\service1.asmx.cdcab7d2.compiled etc etc I am trying to debug this but not really getting anywhere. i have inspected the output from VS but the only option I get is for the build output, which is basic and doesn't really contain any information that is useful. I have tried running both versions with DebugView running but no output there either. I would like to know if there are any log files I could look at, or if anyone has any suggestions on how I might be able to debug what is going wrong here? For completeness the output I get when it doesn't work is: Parser Error Description: An error occurred during the parsing of a resource required to service this request. • FileReference.browse() stops playback on some Flash Players

  We have an issue were the server session associated with a Flex client times out when the browse file dialog is open for a time longer then the configured session timeout. It seems that on some players, the playback is stopped when browse or download on a FileReference is executing. This also causes remote calls to be blocked and hence our manual keep-alive messages are not sent to the server, resulting in a session timeout. I searched for some info on this in the docs and found a notice of it, but it does not explicitly list the players it does (not) work. Would anyone know were I could find a complete list? • How to kill all subprocesses of shell?

  I'm writing bash script, which does several thing. In the beginning it starts several monitor scripts, each of them runs some other tools. At the end of my main script, I would like to kill all things that spawned from my shell. So, it might looks like this: #!/bin/bash some_monitor1.sh & some_monitor2.sh & some_monitor3.sh & do_some_work ... kill_subprocesses The thing is that most of these monitors spawn their own subprocesses, so doing (for example): killall some_monitor1.sh will not always help. Any other way to handle this situation?
