• Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000 Again ! Ubuntu 13.04 x64

  First I have to say that I tried everything written about this concept. The problem is that it stops working randomly in 3 main forms : 1 - sometimes it disconnect from wireless network and reconnect automatically 2 - sometimes it disconnect and wont connect no matter what (needs reboot) 3 - some times it's still connected but cannot ping or surf or whatever. I already tried disabling N mod using these commands : sudo modprobe -r iwlwifi modprobe iwlwifi 11n_disable=1 (or 0, whatever) it didn't help . these are the results of lspci, sudo lshw -C network,   Moved from Home to work and went to fire up my project and after long pause "The provider did not return a ProviderManifestToken string" or even More Abscure ProviderIncompatable Exception Now after 20 mins of chasing my tail re different ver of EntityFramework 4.1 vs 4.2...blahblahblah Look inside at the inner exception A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible DOH!!!! Or a clean translation is that it cant find SQL or is offline or not running. SO check the power is on/Service running or as in my case Edit web.config & change back to Work SQL box   Hope you dont have this pain as the default errors @ the moment suck balls in the EntityFramework 4.XX releases   Cheers

• Notebook overheating

  I'm asking this question because I've tried many tips to solve they don't work and it sounds like a non-fixed bug ubuntu. My problem is with overheating. I've recently installed Ubuntu Precise 12.04 LTS alongside with MS Windows 7 on my notebook Samsung 530U. I'm using both via dual-boot mode. I've no heating problem with MS Win 7 and the fan speed is normal even with long run utilization. However, when booting with Ubuntu and after short time, the PC got very hot and the fan was running at max speed. I installed a tool called Jupiter, I put it in "Power Saving" mode but no result. Now, I avoid using ubuntu because I fear it'll damage my all new notebook. Please can you give me a "FINAL" fix of this problem (lot of answers exist but I don't know the more accurate and efficient one). Thank you in advance.

• How should I design a wizard for generating requirements and documentation

  I'm currently working in an industry where extensive documentation is required, but the apps I'm writing are all pretty much cookie cutter at a high level. What I'd like to do is build an app that asks a series of questions regarding business rules and marketing requirements to generate a requirements spec. For example, there might be a question set that asks "Does the user need to enter their age?" and a follow-up question of "What is the minimum age requirement?" If the inputs are "yes" and "18", then this app will generate requirements that look something like this: "The registration form shall include an age selector" "The registration form shall throw an error if the selected age is less than 18" Later on down the line, I'd like to extend this to do additional things like generate test cases and even code, but the idea is the same: generate some output based on rules determined by answering a set of questions. Are there any patterns I could research to better design the architecture of such an application? Is this something that I should be modeling as a finite state machine?

• Large resolution differences

  I want to develop a game on multiple devices such as PC, Android or IOS. Want it to be in 1080p, but that means a massive scale down for the smartphones. I know how to do that, just render everything on a 1080p rendertarget and then render it on the screen smaller. But what should I do so that the scalling down doesn't look bad and blury? I can't do it vector based or anything because the sprites simply need a specific size. Should I make the sprites power of two size to get some nice mipmapping? And which other settings can I do? Or should I rather go with a lower resolution but then having a little bit worse look PC version? The performance seems not to be a problem for me, so would be sad not using 1080p because of other problems.

• What can procs and lambdas do that functions can't in ruby

  I've been working in Ruby for the last couple weeks, and I've come to the subject of procs, lambdas and blocks. After reading a fair share of examples from a variety of sources, I don't how they're much different from small, specialized functions. It's entirely possible that the examples I've read aren't showing the power behind procs and lambdas. def zero_function(x) x = x.to_s if x.length == 1 return x = "0" + x else return x end end zero_lambda = lambda {|x| x = x.to_s if x.length == 1 return x = "0" + x else return x end } zero_proc = Proc.new {|x| x = x.to_s if x.length == 1 puts x = "0" + x else puts x end } puts zero_function(4) puts zero_lambda.call(3) zero_proc.call(2) This function, proc, and lambda do the exact same thing, just slightly different. Is there any reason to choose one over another?

• Discussion of a Distributed Data Storage implementation

  I want to implement a distributed data storage using a client/server architecture. Each data item will be stored persistently in disk in one of several remote servers. The client uses a library to update and query the data, shielding the client from its actual location. This should allow a client to associate keys (String) to values(byte[]), much as a Map does. The system must ensure that the amount of data stored in each server is approximately the same. The set of servers is known beforehand by other servers and clients. Both the client and the server will be written in Java, using sockets, threads, and files. I open this topic with the objective of discussing the best way to implement this idea, assuming simplicity, what are the issues of this implementation, performance measurements and discussion of the limitations.

• Repacked proprietary software keeps updating the same deb

  I repacked a proprietary program delivered as tar file to a deb file for having a company wide repository. I used reprepro to set up a repository and signed it. A unix timestamp is faking a versioning numbering, so I can have different (real) versions installed at the same time. Almost everything works as expected. The deb file looks like this: mysoft8.0v6_1366455181_amd64.deb Only problem on a client machine it tries to install the same deb file over and over again because it thinks its an update. • Are flag variables an absolute evil?

  I remember doing a couple of projects where I totally neglected using flags and ended up with better architecture/code; however, it is a common practice in other projects I work at, and when code grows and flags are added, IMHO code-spaghetti also grows. Would you say there are any cases where using flags is a good practice or even necessary?, or would you agree that using flags in code are... red flags and should be avoided/refactored; me, I just get by with doing functions/methods that check for states in real time instead. • How can I get a DisplayLink USB monitor under Ubuntu (any recent version) ?

  I have a DisplayLink-based external USB monitor, which has both power and data over USB, and seems to work perfectly under Windows 7, but only can display a text console under Ubuntu 10.10, and that I can only use when I am actually switched to it. So the only Use I can have so far is to have some text-based monitoring or console that I can watch while working on the graphic display. I know there are some development done for DisplayLink, but I never could get it to actually run properly. Yes, I tried the detailed setup described in other posts, but they did not work, and instead crashed my X that I had to restore. Merci :-)

• What would I do to figure out why Suspend sometimes crashes?

  Something is causing suspend crash occasionally. When it does crash, the system freezes with a black screen and stays on, not suspending. This makes me have to hold the power button until the system shuts down. One setting difference I have from most people is, I don't use the option that lets you suspend when the laptop lid is closed. So opening and closing the laptop lid has no actions. I like to press suspend manually. Could this preference change be the cause? How can I start looking for what's causing the crash, since the crash doesn't display errors?

• Booting briefly shows CLI login and then black

  When I boot to Ubuntu on my dualboot system, it appears to boot normally, up to the point when I would normally expect to see the lightDM graphical login screen. However, I see a CLI login screen, which I assume is tty1. Before I get a chance to actually login to it, though, it drops to a black screen with a flashing cursor. Pressing ctrl+alt+f1 does nothing. When I hit the power button on the laptop, I see the usual scrolling text as Ubuntu shuts down. I know that this is related to me having installed the proprietary ATI drivers for the video card. Purging the drivers gave me back a GUI, but unfortunately no working desktop environment, and switching to the mesa drivers returned me to the black screen issue. The only way I can get a stable working CLI is through booting to advanced options and choosing a root shell prompt, as even the failsafe X session doesn't function for me.

• Dynamic Quad/Oct Trees

  I've recently discovered the power of Quadtrees and Octrees and their role in culling/LOD applications, however I've been pondering on the implementations for a Dynamic Quad/Oct Tree. Such tree would not require a complete rebuild when some of the underlying data changes (Vertex Data). Would it be possible to create such a tree? What would that look like? Could someone point me in the correct direction to get started? The application here would, in my scenario, be used for a dynamically changing spherical landscape with over 10,000,000 verticies. The use of Quad/Oct Trees is obvious for Culling & LOD as well as the benefits from not having to completely recompute the tree when the underlying data changes.

• How can I figure out why Suspend sometimes fails?

  Something is causing suspend crash occasionally. When it does crash, the system freezes with a black screen and stays on, not suspending. This makes me have to hold the power button until the system shuts down. One setting difference I have from most people is, I don't use the option that lets you suspend when the laptop lid is closed. So opening and closing the laptop lid has no actions. I like to press suspend manually. Could this preference change be the cause? How can I start looking for what's causing the crash, since the crash doesn't display errors?

• What is wrong with Unix/linux

  This is a genuine question motivated by Ideal Operating System When I moved from DOS to Linux in the late 90s it was an eye opener for me. Long file names, arbitrarily many extensions etc... Now I look at Linux and Unix and see all sorts of issues. Here are things I see which could be fixed. Too much depends on root, and rootly powers cannot be voluntarily delegated over several users. (I would love to give up my power to manager printers and delegate the job to another account) File permissions are very limited, and there is not much metadata to go with files. The "everything is a file" metaphor is not true, Plan 9 gets it right(er).
