• How to improve a single-paged site search result [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to SEO a Single-Page website I created an online CV of mine a couple of weeks ago and it has had quite a few visits. Now I want to improve the chance it will appear in google search results; however, my web CV is a one-paged site and it contains only internal links (those with hash #) so I can't really submit a sitemap. I could have changed the internal links to normal links to be processed on server-side, but there's no point of doing so. I'm very new to web SEO so I would really appreciate if somebody can show me what should I do with a single-paged site with internal links to be effectively indexed by crawlers.

• Is there any problem with using two slashes in the middle of a URL? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What does the double slash mean in URLs? I'm working on a mod_rewrite URL structure as follows: http://example.com/search/filter1/filter2/filter3/filter4 There are some conditions where it is OK for the first attribute to be blank, but i want to keep the other attributes in the same position. (Otherwise I can't assume that the attribute in the second position represents what I want it to represent.) However this results in some URLs like this: http://example.com/search//filter2/filter3/filter4 This seems to work in all browsers I've tested (Chrome,Firefox,IE9,IE compatible) and I'm not seeing any errors on the server side, so I can't think of any problems in using it. But it just looks wrong and weird to me and I'm not used to seeing it. Are there any potential downsides to using a structure that encourages URLs like this, or any major reasons no one seems to use it? (Everything I search in Google assumes I'm talking about the two slashes after http:)

• What is the point to namespaces in branches in git?

  So I mainly use Mercurial for my projects and I decided to sit down and learn all Git's shenanigans to discover if I'm in the right side (at least for me). I'm learning that git uses namespaces for branches and I would like to know (in your experience) what is the point of namespaces?. In Mercurial I could just set the convention of naming branches like so: <branch name> //for "origin" branches <username>/<branch name> //for user branches I imagine that there is more to it than just the name (aside from avoiding naming conflicts), but what do I get out of this seemingly more complicated (not necessarily bad) model?

  Though I have read and tried some advises regarding the change of colors in a theme, I found no answer regarding my question, which is: When I drag a window to the left (or right or up) side of the screen an orange frame shows up, indicating the area that the window will occupy. This frame is in orange. Can you please inform me how can I change this color to blueish, to match my theme? At this point, I would like to inform you that Zorin OS has this blueish frame instead of orange, but I do not know where this color comes from.

• Full screen: launchbar + panel overlaps when showing a dialog box

  I'm developing a program for 12.04 that will run on full-screen, so I would like to have full control of what appears on the screen. However, when I show another window (possibly a dialog/message box), the Uunity Panel and Launcher appears on the top and left side of the screen. I've experienced this behavior with other applications (Firefox, Gnubg) as well when in full-screen mode. I tried to play with the settings, now my dialog box is hidden from the the taskbar, set to float on it's parent, which is my full screen window. The problem still exists. Is there a way to prevent these panels from showing up, when the new window isn't shown in taskbar, or it's parent is a full-screen window? Or do I need to completely disable them?

• how to get bash to stop escaping $ during tab-completion?

  I have this on the command line: ln -sf $PWD/wine- and then I hit tab to complete the filename. In earlier versions of Ubuntu, this worked just fine to complete the wine- filename (and as a side-effect $PWD would be expanded at that time). But now it turns it in to ln -sf \$PWD/wine- which isn't what I meant at all and doesn't complete anything as the file does not literally start with $.   Possible Duplicate: How do you dive into large code bases? I have worked as a developer developing C/C++ applications for mobile platforms (Windows Mobile and Symbian) for about six years. About a year ago, however, I changed job and currently work with large(!) enterprise systems with high security and availability requirements, all developed in Java. My problem is that I am having a hard time getting a grip on the architecture of the systems, even after a year working with them, and understanding systems other people have built has never been my strong side. The fact that I haven't worked with enterprise systems before doesn't exactly help. Does anyone have a good approach on how to learn and understand large systems? Are there any particular techniques and/or patterns I should read up on?

• How can I install another version of Ubuntu on my computer and then uninstall it without messing up my bootup process?

  I have Ubuntu 11.10 installed and I am having some problems with it. I'd like to see if the problems are related to some customizations I did. Since one of my problems relate to the slow logout process, I don't want to use the live version. I want to actually install a new version in a separate partition along side my current version and then, after testing that new version and figuring out what I want, just removing the partition and going back to a single version of Ubuntu on this computer. Does anyone know how to do that without messing up my boot process?

  I installed Ubuntu with the Windows installer to use it along side. I could not find anything to activate a firewall so I thought its inbuilt and running. However now I read that I have to activate it manually? The command that was shown actually didnt promt any repsonse. Is it that the Windows installer version does not have that. Also my greatest concern is that I was without firewall protection for 2-3 weeks and I am using alot of public networks (university and dorm(only cable but still)). Thanks in advance.

  I've got a database where I want to store user information and user_meta information. The reason behind setting it up in this way was because the user_meta side may change over time and I would like to do this without disrupting the master user table. If possible, I would like some advice on how to best set up this meta data table.   I've been rummaging through Unity's source code (Shell Interface) and I was a little curious about something; where in the code are you supposed to find positional code? I'll clarify a bit with some examples. How do you find in the code what tells the Launcher to sit on the left side of the screen? Where in the code does it tell the "Session" button on the panel (top) to sit at the very right of the screen? I guess my real question is how do I find this out for myself? I've looked through a big portion of the source code and can't find anything related to the actual position of these items, only their sub-items like text-align. Any guidance on this would be much appreciated.

  I'm using 14:04 which is pretty nice. Something wionders me: if I open a window (e.g. Ubuntu Software Centre) I can see SOME items (sometimes nothing) but by hovering the mouse over it it appears - and then disappears again. Sometimes the side mover acts the same way... Maybe it has to do with my hardware: P4, 3 GHz, 2 GB RAM, older graphics board, KVM-switch? There's no difference whether I use Gnome, Ubuntu standard, Ubuntu classic, Ubuntu fallback... Thanks for hints Jens

• Issue with div image size [migrated]

  I hope this helps explain the issue I am having I have recently designed a horizontal scrolling portfolio for a client, the rights and wrongs of horizontal web design, is a sligtly seperate topic but alas the client wanted something different. Im having a real issue with the bottom div though As the monitor size is reduced its creating the browser scroll bar down the side as the div image is overlapping the monitor size. Wouldnt be such a huge issue but because of the nature of the horizontal site its producing a diagional scrolling effect. Is there away to prevent the screen expanding from the actual monitor size using css or anyother solution? I'm probably staring at the answer as I type but brain doesnt seem to be working unfortunately.

• Ubuntu 12.10 doesn't work after update

  12.10 doesn't work after a partial distribution update. I had some trouble before I began the update, and the Partial Update thingy appeared. It took about 6 hours to update/upgrade, don't know why. After the update, I restarted the laptop and nautilus doesn't appear nor does Unity. I can't switch to Gnome or anything else to try and fix it. The resolution is weird (doesn't fill out the right side of the screen). I'm almost sure it's Compiz who's the sinner (or me.) but I need help to get everything working again. Internet connections is fine. I have tried sudo apt-get install -f and sudo apt-get upgrade and so on.
