• CentOS: revert python version back to original

  Hi all, I installed python 2.6 using the instructions here on CentOS 5.4. However I realized it was a bad move and I need to revert back to 2.4, which was there originally. Can anyone guide me on how to undo what I did here? In particular, I am not sure how to undo this: Configure ld to find your shared libs: $ cat /etc/ld.so.conf.d/opt-python2.5.conf /opt/python2.5/lib (hit enter) (hit ctrl-d to return to shell) $ ldconfig I tried removing the alias and the symlink and even re-aliasing python to /usr/bin/python, but when I try to install an RPM i get this error: error: Failed dependencies: libpython2.4.so.1.0 is needed by ... • Pressing "Home" in Vim on an Indented Line

  I have a bad habit of using the 'home' key to go back to the beginning of a line. As I recently started using vim (and loving it!) I noticed that when I press the home key on a lined that is indented, it returns me to the very beginning of the line. In Notepad++ (the editor I used to use) it would return me to the beginning of the code on that line, right after the indent. Is there some way to replicate this behavior in vim? Usually, when I'm pressing home it's in the Insert mode for me to (usually) stick a variable there. I have set smartindent in my vimrc, with set noautoindent as a "tips" page told me to make sure to disable autoindent (although it didn't seem to be enabled in the first place - perhaps that option is extraneous.) • Automatically pulling on remote server with Git push?

  Here's what I'm trying to do: I have a GitHub repository, a portion of which I'd like to make web viewable. Right now I've cloned the repository on my own server and it works well, but in order to keep it up to date, I have to manually login and pull the latest changes. I'm not sure if this is the best idea (or the best approach), but I'd like the remote server to automatically pull whenever someone pushes to repository. GitHub makes it easy enough to run a script when someone pushes, but I'm not sure how to pull once someone does that. I was using PHP for simplicity, but just doing something like git pull naturally doesn't work because of permissions. Is this a bad idea or is there another way of achieving what I want to do? This seems like a common set up, but I wasn't sure. Thanks.

• Overwriting arguments object for a Javascript function

  If I have the following: // Clean input. $.each(arguments, function(index, value) { arguments[index] = value.replace(/[\W\s]+/g, '').toLowerCase(); }); Would that be a bad thing to do? I have no further use for the uncleaned arguments in the function, and it would be nice not to create a useless copy of arguments just to use them, but are there any negative effects to doing this? Ideally I would have done this, but I'm guessing this runs into problems since arguments isn't really an Array: arguments = $.map(arguments, function(value) { return value.replace(/[\W\s]+/g, '').toLowerCase(); }); Thanks for any input. EDIT: I've just realized that both of these are now inside their own functions, so the arguments object has changed. Any way to do this without creating an unnecessary variable?

• Redoing Commit History in GIT Without Rebase

  Since asking my last question which turned out to be about rebasing with GIT, I have decided that I don't want to rebase at all. Instead I want to: Branch Work work work, checking in and pushing at all times Throw out all of those commits and pretend they never happened (so one clean commit at the end of work) I do this currently by copying the files to a new directory and then copying them back in to a new branch (branched at the same point as my working branch), and then merging that into master or wherever. Is this just plain bad and why? More important: Is there a better/GIT way to do this? git rebase -i forces me to merge (and pick, and squash).

Regarding the multithreading, what should be used? The reactive extension seem to be a good choice. Has anyone tried this in a real world project? Are there better options? I had bad experiences with the .NET thread pool in the past.

• C# event or delegate or other solution?

  Looking for some help or programmng ideas or mayeb there is some pattern that would help. Have an application that needs to fire alot of events sequentially, it could up to 100 or more unique events, it will be dynamic depeneding on the situation. Trying to find the best practice for doing this. My main idea right now is to create a list of objects iterate thru them, and fire each event. This seems wrong, or bad practice. Or maybe have one object and pass a list or params into one event? Or am I missing some feature in .NET that i could be using or implementing?

  This question may seem backwards to all logical reasoning, but I encountered a team member who was working on a side project out of the main tree, and had decided ( rephrased ) I'm the only developer, we don't need version control, that's stupid Now personally, the idea horrifies me, and I can't for one justify it. So now my stance is clear, I want some legitimate answers why somebody can excuse themselves from using version control. The default answers will of course be "there is no excuse". Not what I want to see. If you can't see an excuse, then just don't post. ( Feel free to downmod excuses others post that are illegitimate/bad and give reasoning )

Can you help me change the function to accept html? • Getting error 400 / 404 - HttpUtility.UrlEncode not encoding full string?

  Why do the following URLs give me the IIS errors below: A) http://192.168.1.96/cms/View.aspx/Show/Small+test' A2) http://192.168.1.96/cms/View.aspx/Show/Small%20test' <-- this works, but is not the result from HttpUtility.UrlEncode() B) http://192.168.1.96/cms/View.aspx/Show/'%26$%23funky**!!~''+page Error for A: HTTP Error 404.11 - Not Found The request filtering module is configured to deny a request that contains a double escape sequence. Error for B: HTTP Error 400.0 - Bad Request ASP.NET detected invalid characters in the URL. The last part of the URL after /Show/ is the result after the text is being sent through HttpUtility.UrlEncode() so, according to Microsoft it is URL Encoded correctly. If I user HttpUtility.UrlPathEncode() rather than HttpUtility.UrlEncode() I get the A2 results. But B ends up looking like: http://192.168.1.96/TVCMS-CVJZ/cms/View.aspx/Show/'&$#funky**!!~''%20page which is still wrong. Does Microsoft know how to URL Encode at all? Is there a function someone has written up to do it the correct way?

  I have problem accessing Organization Service when I try to add it as a Service Reference in Visual Studio. However, I can Access the Service in browser. • Python: Getting the attribute name that the created object will be given

  Before I ask this, do note: I want this for debugging purposes. I know that this is going to be some bad black magic, but I want to use it just during debugging so I could identify my objects more easily. It's like this. I have some object from class A that creates a few B instances as attributes: class A(object): def __init__(self) self.vanilla_b = B() self.chocolate_b = B() class B(object): def __init__(self): # ... What I want is that in B.__init__, it will figure out the "vanilla_b" or whatever attribute name it was given, and then put that as the .name attribute to this specific B. Then in debugging when I see some B object floating around, I could know which one it is. Is there any way to do this?

  This is more of a philosophical/best-practice sort of question rather than a technical problem. Are there any strong arguments against writing a DataContract class with methods that are to be used server-side only? Or what about additional properties that are not decorated with the DataMember attribute? For example: [DataContract] public class LogEntry { [DataMember] public string Message { get; set; } [DataMember] public string Severity { get; set; } public string SomeOtherProperty { get; set; } ... public void WriteToDatabase() { ... } } Not doing it seems like an awful lot of extra work that I would prefer to avoid, although using extension methods could make it easier.   We have a REST API where clients can supply parameters representing values defined on the server in Java Enums. So we can provide a descriptive error, we add this lookup method to each Enum. Seems like we're just copying code (bad). • What good timesheet should and shouldn't have for a small (non programming) 50 people company?

  I'm sure most people here had to fill at least one time sheet in their life that made their life miserable, hell it's even the worst time taker ever especially after you have to fill it in hurry. I will be developing some simple TimeSheet application for a small company of 50 people (non programming related, it's actually 4 companies working together) and would like it to be user friendly and as less disturbing as possible. So what in your opinion makes it a good timesheet (lack of it doesn't count :p), what data it should store? Should be only hours per day with possibility to choose project, company and simple overview what you have worked on like: Day 1, 3:00, 'Company 1', 'Project5', 'Name', Short Overview Day 1, 5:00, 'Company 2', 'Project6', 'Name', Short Overview Or should it gather more data? Would it be realy bad if it were an WinForms application considering that I don't know ASP.NET or any other web based language? I would be deploying it using ClickOnce or so.

• How to implement Auto_Increment per User, on the same table?

  I would like to have multiple users that share the same tables in the database, but have one auto_increment value per user. I will use an embedded database, JavaDB and as what I know it doesn't support this functionality. How can I implement it? Should I implement a trigger on inserts that lookup the users last inserted row, and then add one, or are there any better alternative? Or is it better to implement this in the application code? Or is this just a bad idea? I think this is easier to maintain than creating new tables for every user. • Embed remote desktop in browser

  I would like to embed a Remote Desktop session within my browser. I must use remote desktop because my clients can't install any additional software on the server. Here are some problems that I can already foresee: 1) I believe that I can embed an RDP ActiveX control, but then all I could support is IE. And even then, IE lockdown may forbid ActiveX controls. 2) I don't know anything about Apple computers, but I presume that they don't inherently run RDP? 3) I think there are ways to run RDP through a Java control. I don't have experience to know if this is a good or bad idea. I suppose that Java may even be disabled on some browsers, but don't know if this is a common case? So, what options have I got here to make this work reliably? I presume that I may need some default options (ie ActiveX), and then some fallback options (ie Java), and code to identify the correct option each time.

• SQLite doesn't have booleans or date-times.

  I've been thinking about using SQLite for my next project, but I'm concerned that it seems to lack proper datetime and bit data types. If I use DbLinq (or some other ORM) to generate C# classes, will the data types of the properties be "dumbed down"? Will date-time data be placed in properties of type string or double? Will boolean data be placed in properties of type int? If yes, what are the implications? I'm envisioning a scenario where I need to write a whole second layer of classes with more specific data types and do a bunch of transformations and casts, but maybe it's not as bad as I fear. If you have any experience with this or a similar scenario, how did you handle it?

  Hi, I'm a newbie to mahout.My aim is to produce recommendations on binary user purchased data.So i applied item-item similarity model in computing top N recommendations for movie lens data assuming 1-3 ratings as a 0 and 4-5 ratings as a 1.Then i tried evaluating my recommendations with the ratings in the test-data but hardly there have been two or three matches from my top 20 recommendations to the top rated items in test data and no match for most users. • Is there such a thing as too many tables?

  I've been searching stackoverflow for about an hour now and couldn't find any topics related, so I apologize if this is a duplicate question. My inquery is this. Is there a point at which there are too many tables in a database? Even if the structure is well organized, thought out, and perfectly facilitates the design intent? I have a database that is quickly approaching 40 tables - about 10 main ones, and over 30 ancillary tables (junction tables, 'enumeration' tables, etc). Am I just a bad developer - or should I be trying something different? It seems like so many to me, I'm really afraid at how it will impact the performance of the project. I have done a lot of condensing where possible, grouped similar things where possible, etc. The database is built in MS-SQL 2008.
