• Using threads and event handlers within a WCF Web Service

  While making a WCF Web Service, I came across a problem while using a method with a webbrowser control. The method starts a thread and uses a webbrowser control to fill in some forms and click further, waiting for a event handler to fire and return a answer I need. The method is tested and works within its own enviroment, but used in a WCF Web Service enviroment, the event handlers just won't fire. A result of that is the waiting manualresetevent not ending. Is this because of the new thread or because of the bad event handling of the web service? If yes, what is a reasonable solution?

• What do you tell people your profession is? [closed]

  My technical title is Member of the Technical Staff, and like you most of you, I design/write code for a living. I can never decide what to answer when someone asks what I do for a living? Software Developer? Software Engineer? [Kernel] Programmer? Computer Scientist? These all seem to have various bad connotations. I guess I like Software Engineer the best, but unfortunately this term has been coopted by people who don't actually code. I made the mistake of taking a 'Software Engineering' class, and realized that I definitely don't want to be associated with people who major in this. Probably this is too subjective, so feel free to community wiki it or whatever, but I think it is a valid question and I would like to hear what others have decided on and their reasoning.

• ClearCase UCM Mainline Configuration Management Pattern Question

  A configuration management pattern question (using Rational ClearCase UCM) When I use the mainline approach I create new releases by: - create release 1 from mainline - on a certain moment baseline release 1, deliver release 1 to mainline - create release 2 from mainline - on a certain moment baseline release 2, deliver release 2 to mainline - create release 3 from mainline - etc... Works very nice because the pathname is /main/release 3/latest instead of /main/release 1/release 2/release 3/latest etc... However... when in release 1 are new elements that have to be propagated to later releases I can not use the mainline since the mainline is already on e.g. release 4. The only thing I can do is deliver/merge from release 1 directly to release 2. The bad thing is that the pathname then becomes /main/release 1/release 2/latest for that files (and possibly later releases). That is I think not in line with the mainline approach. What am I doing wrong?

• Editing a TreeView node doesn't change the TreeNode Key

  I have a TreeView with user-editable nodes. I like to use the node caption as key to my tree node : + Root |+ Node1 ||- SubNode1 ||- SubNode2 |+ Node2 ||- SubNode3 ||- SubNode4 So I can reach a node like this: MyTreeView.Nodes["Root"].Nodes["Node2"].Nodes["SubNode3"] The problem is that, as I allow the user to rename any node, I would need also to change the key of my node in its parent in the AfterLabelEdit handler... which seems (logically) not to be done automatically. Unfortunately, Nodes["blabla"] is readonly, Nodes.Add(string Key, TreeNode Node) doesn't exist, and I can't find a way to do this without throwing (sooner or later) a bad exception. Any idea ?

  Intro There's a lot of advice out there for dealing with return codes in batch files (using the ERROLEVEL mechanism), e.g. Get error code from within a batch file ERRORLEVEL inside IF Some of the advice is to do if errorlevel 1 goto somethingbad, while others recommend using the %ERRORLEVEL% variable and using ==, EQU, LSS, etc. There seem to be issues within IF statements and such, so then delayedexpansion is encouraged, but it seems to come with quirks of its own. Question What is a foolproof (i.e. robust, so it will work on nearly any system with nearly any return code) way to know if a bad (nonzero) code has been returned? • What performance indicators can I use to convince management that I need my development PC upgraded?

  At work, my PC is slow. I feel that I can be way more productive if I just wasn't waiting for Visual Studio and everything else to respond. My PC isn't bad (dual-core, 3GB of RAM), but there is a lot of corporate software and whatnot to slow everything down and sometimes lock it up. Now, some developers have begun getting Windows 7 machines with 8 GB of RAM. Of course, I start salivating at this. However, I was told that I "had to justify" why I should get a new machine. I can think of a lot of different things, but I am curious as to what every one else on SO would have to say. NOTE: Ideally, these reasons should be specifically related to .NET development in Visual Studio on a Windows machine. This isn't a "how can I make my machine faster" question.

• Validating an Autocomplete field in Django

  I have models similar to the following: class Band(models.Model): name = models.CharField(unique=True) class Event(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=50, unique=True) bands = models.ManyToManyField(Band) and essentially I want to use the validation capability offered by a ModelForm that already exists for Event, but I do not want to show the default Multi-Select list (for 'bands') on the page, because the potential length of the related models is extremely long. I have the following form defined: class AddEventForm(ModelForm): class Meta: model = Event fields = ('name', ) Which does what is expected for the Model, but of course, validation could care less about the 'bands' field. I've got it working enough to add bands correctly, but there's no correct validation, and it will simply drop bad band IDs. What should I do so that I can ensure that at least one (correct) band ID has been sent along with my form? • HBase as a multimap

  Hi guys, I'm doing some large scale text processing work and I'm trying to get started with Hadoop and HBase. One of the things I need to do is build a multimap of some stuff, which I later use to look up things and get all items with a certain key (in a M/R job). Would it be OK to use HBase and insert many rows with the same key and rely on versions/timestamps to achieve a multimap-like setup or is this a bad idea? The multimap is built up in the reduce phase of a Mapreduce task by the way, or at least in the way I've formulated it on paper. Thanks! If more information is needed, I'd be happy to provide it. Not sure whether this question is clear.

• Where is the best place to put <script> tags in HTML markup?

  When embedding JavaScript in an HTML document, where is the best place to put the <script> tags and included JavaScript? I seem to recall that you are not supposed to place these in the <head> section, but placing at the beginning of the <body> section is bad, too, since the JavaScript will have to be parsed before the page is rendered completely (or something like that). This seems to leave the end of the <body> section as a logical place for <script> tags. So, where is the best place to put the <script> tags? (This question references this question, in which it was suggested that JavaScript function calls should be moved from <a> tags to <script> tags. I'm specifically using JQuery, but more general answers are also appropriate.)

I'm trying to make a media Download bar for Chrome Browser like Real Player's one ( a DLL plugin ): Whenever you open a web-page which contents "media stream" like Youtube..., it will show a download bar at the left-top corner of the flash player - allow you to download this video/song to your computer. I know it use NPAPI to catch the media stream but how? Which method do I have to use? Is there any document for me? I have never worked on a NPAPI-project before. • PHP Object Oriented Web Application

  I have a class called "Layout" for the layout of the page, another class called "User" for the user. Every page I create, I instantiate a new Layout. When a user logs in, there is a new User instantiated. How do I get an instance of the layout class to know about the instantiated user? I could also save the entire instance of the User in a session variable. I assume that's a bad idea though. What are the best practices for this?

• What would you do if you coded a C++/OO cross-platform framework and realize its laying on your disk

  This project started as a development platform because i wanted to be able to write games for mobile devices, but also being able to run and debug the code on my desktop machine too (ie, the EPOC device emulator was so bad): the platforms it currently supports are: Window-desktop WinCE Symbian iPhone The architecture it's quite complete with 16bit 565 video framebuffer, blitters, basic raster ops, software pixel shaders, audio mixer with shaders (dsp fx), basic input, a simple virtual file system... although this thing is at it's first write and so there are places where some refactoring would be needed. Everything has been abstracted away and the guiding principle are: mostly clean code, as if it was a book to just be read object-orientation, without sacrifying performances mobile centric The idea was to open source it, but without being able to manage it, i doubt the software itself would benefit from this move.. Nevertheless, i myself have learned a lot from unmaintained projects. So, thanking you in advance for reading all this... really, what would you do?

Explained more clearly: I have a TextField named password and I want that when it is written in 123 and press the button it goes to another activity if it is written in 123 if not it would inform the "wrong password!" and that the password is found file, which is / sdcard / Android / password.txt if you understood :) SORRY FOR MY BAD ENGLISH! • Using a singleton database class in functions and multiple scripts(PHP) - best use methods

  I have a singleton db connection which I get with: $dbConnect = myDatabase::getInstance(); which is easy enough. My question is what is the least rhetorical and legitimate way of using this connection in functions and classes? It seems silly to have to declare the variable global, pass it into every single function, and/or recreate this variable within every function. Is there another answer for this? Obviously I'm a noob and I can work my way around this problem 10 different ways, none of which is really attractive to me. It would be a lot easier if I could have that $dbConnect variable accessible in any function without needing to declare it global or pass it in. I do know I can add the variable to the $_SERVER array...is there something wrong with doing this? It seems somewhat inappropriate to me. Another quick question: Is it bad practice to do this: $result = myDatabase::getInstance()-query($query); from directly within a function?

• Best approach to send data from a server to an Android device

  I am developing an Android app that needs to communicate bi-directionally with a server. By that, I mean either the server or the device can send a message at any time, with an arbitrary amount of time in between messages. Sending data from the device to the server is a common and I think well understood task, but I'm not as sure what the best approach is to go in the opposite direction from the server to the device. I think having the device periodically poll the server may be a bad idea due to latency and the drain on the battery, but I'd be willing to consider this option. My plan at the moment is to send text messages from the server via an email-to-SMS bridge, and to have my app run a service to receive and handle these messages. The question I have is if there are any best practices for this scenario, and if using text messages has some downsides that I have failed to consider. For the sake of this question, I want to assume that users have an unlimited text data plan, so paying per text won't be an issue.

• Duplicate ID/indexes and looping

  I realize having two elements in the same html doc with the same ID is wrong, bad, immoral, and will lead to global warming. But... I'm trying to write an XSS widgit, so I really have no control over the quality of the parent web page. I loop through document.images to retrieve a list of images on the page. I perform an action on each one. for(img in document.images){ ... } i've also tried for(var i=0;i<document.images.length;i++){ ... } in both cases it allows me to loop through all of the elements, BUT when trying trying to reference an object with a duplicate ID, I always get the first (in order of the html). When using debugger in IE8 i'm able to see that both elements ARE listed, but that they both have the same index (in IE the index of the document.images is either sequential or matches the image ID) Does anyone have a better solution?

Theoretically it's possible to create a small commutator device on microcontroller or microscheme, which will be a USB-host for Android device. You'll connect Android device with commutator and then connect commutator with monitor. For example, the scheme looks like: Android phone - commutator (USB-host) - TV/Monitor. Summary, I need to connect android phone with TV via miniUSB port. I found soft which can use miniUSB - HDMI cable, but those apps only for Motorolla Droid and HTC Evo. I'll glad to get links to existing apps or projects on that theme, to info about software generation HDMI-signal and connecting Android devices with another devices.   unichar myChar = [myString characterAtIndex:0]; [myNSMutableArray addObject:myChar]; I am trying to insert the first char of a string into an array, to create an array of chars. the first line does not give me an error. The second line however, provides the following error: warning: passing argument 1 of 'addObject:' makes pointer from integer without a cast This also crashes the application with a "bad address" error. I thought this error was due to a problem with memory allocation. Can someone shed some light on this.

• System("pause"); - Why is it wrong?

  Here's a question that I don't quite understand: The command, System("pause"); is taught to new programmers as a way to pause a program and wait for a keyboard input to continue. However, it seems to be frowned on by many veteran programmers as something that should not be done in varying degrees. Some people say it is fine to use. Some say it is only to be used when you are locked in your room and no one is watching. Some say that they will personally come to your house and kill you if you use it. I, myself am a new programmer with no formal programming training. I use it because I was taught to use it. What I don't understand is that if it is not something to be used, then why was I taught to use it? Or, on the flip side, is it really not that bad after all? What are your thoughts on this subject?

  I have a loop which basically calls this every few seconds (after the timeout): while(true){ if(finished) return; switch(select(FD_SETSIZE, &readfds, 0, 0, &tv)){ case SOCKET_ERROR : report bad stuff etc; return; default : break; } // do stuff with the incoming connection } So basically for every few seconds (which is specified by tv), it reactivates the listening. This is run on thread B (not a main thread). There are times when I want to end this acceptor loop immediately from thread A (main thread), but seems like I have to wait until the time interval finishes.. Is there a way to disrupt the select function from another thread so thread B can quit instantly?

• PHP, manipulating images and thumbnails?

  I am using php and mysql. I allow my registered users to upload photos, the photos are store in filesystem format, then I will keep the original/max size of : width: 1600px and heigh: 1200px. In the user profile page, I would like to display the image, it maybe one of the 5 types of thumnails: 500x500, 300x300, 200x200, 100x100 or 50x50. What is the best way to create the thumbnails, here are my current solutions: I am thinking of create 1 thumbnail, then from that thumbnail, i will resize in [img src="" width="XX"] tag, alternatively, store the different thumbnails size in database, then get and display it Create 5 thumbnails for each photos? (I am afraid this is a bad way) Whats the best practices?
