• Accessing local files through an http:// address

  I would like to access a folder of mp3 files on my local Windows machine through http:// addresses. For example, typing http://localhost:9999/songs/test.mp3 into my browser would play test.mp3, which sits in a specified folder on my C: drive. What is the very simplest way to do this? (Background: a program I'm using wants me to enter the URLs of these files, but assumes they are remote and accessed over http. It doesn't accept URLs of the form file://C/Users.... So, I'd like to give these local files addresses that makes them "look" remote.)

  Everytime I click on a link from within Mac, parallels boots up my Windows VM and opens the link there. That's super annoying and I haven't found a configuration to change it. In the settings of my Windows VM there is an option where to launch the webbrowser. However that seems to only affect links that I open from within my Windows session. UPDATE I just stumbled across this answer: How to disassociate a file type with an application in Mac OS So I disabled "share windows apps with mac" completely. Also this seems to be overly protective it at least does the trick. I think it also deactivates that running windows apps show up in the dock but I don't care that much about that anyway.

• Slow LAN transfer from 3rd party computer

  Hi Everyone, I've got an odd problem that I'm not really sure where to start the troubleshooting process. I have a 'server' with Windows Server 2008R2 (64-bit) installed and it has a couple of hard drives. If I Remote Desktop into the server and transfer files from one HD to the other, all it fine. If however, I use my workstation (Windows 7 64bit) and open up a shared resource on the server and transfer a file from one hard drive on the server to another HD on the server (not using Remote Desktop, just Windows explorer/Network places), the transfer crawls... It takes about 5mins to discover files/calculate the transfer and then starts transferring at speeds like 56KB/s - 200KB/s. Both machines have Marvel GigE network ports with a TrendNet 8-port green GigE switch. I've set Jumbo packets to 9K on both machines...

• Sendmail /etc/hosts and DNS ... what is the correct way?

  I found one tutorial on setting up sendmail that says that in the /etc/hosts file, "The entry for 127.0.0.1 must always be followed by the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the server." Like so: 127.0.0.1 bigboy.my-site.com localhost.localdomain localhost bigboy (This tutorial is here). However, I can't find anyone else suggesting something like that. instead most people seem to put some combination of localhost and localdomain.localhost after 127.0.0.1, and then some variant of the fully qualified domain name after the public ip address. What is the correct way?

  I'm looking for a good way to manage a lot of pdf documents (e.g. papers, ebooks) on windows. Ideally I'm looking for a windows version of the great mac app Yep. I've looked quite a bit and haven't found any windows app that provides and organized overview of your pdf documents. I've considered just tagging the pdf files, but there don't seem to be any apps to simply tag and search tagged files easily. I've found TaggedFrog, but the tags are kept in the app's internal DB and are associated with the filename. So if you move/rename a file it looses all its tags. In a nutshell: Is there a good windows app to organize/efficiently tag files?

• NFS share access - Permission denied

  I'm trying to share a directory on my NAS device(WD Mybook WE) with NFS to another machine on my local network. The directory on the NAS device looks like this: drwxr-x--- 15 git git 4096 Nov 17 01:05 git/ And id's of the user git on the NAS device is like this: [root@myhost DataVolume]# id git uid=505(git) gid=505(git) I played with many different parameters in the /etc/exports file and this is what I got there currently: /DataVolume/git 192.168.0.20(async,rw,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check) On the client side I have the user git and group git with the same id's to match the ones on the server. user@myclient:~$ id git uid=505(git) gid=505(git) groups=505(git) I mount the directory with: sudo mount myhost:/DataVolume/git -t nfs git/ and the mounted directory looks like: drwxr-x--- 15 git git 4096 Nov 17 01:05 git After these steps I can't seem to cd to that directory with any user, including git and root. I am getting a Permission denied error. Thanks in advance for any help.

• No write access on Windows 2008 workgroup share

  Hi All, I'm trying to access network shares on my new Windows 2008 server (workgroup) using my server's local admin account. I can read files but not modify them. Permissions (sharing + file system) say: Users = Read only. Admins = Full Control. Even though I connect using my admin account (net use x: \\server\share /user:server\me), I can't write. OTOH, I have another share on the same computer where users have Read AND Write. I can write into that one. What's the problem? Does it have to do with UAC? TIA for your help.

  I wanted to transfer new code into my new production server. I have code files on my development server. Instead of uploading files using FTP from my local machine, there is other way to transfer code from one server to other. What I am thinking I will make zip file of whole code to be transfer and place it in webroot. So that it would be accessible in internet with some link http://www.mydomain.com/code.tar.gz now on the other server i will just run command wget http://www.mydomain.com/code.tar.gz Will this transfer done in few seconds...? May I know is this correct approach?

  I have One Server (Srv1) which holds data with file shares and the storage is full. Now I have second Server (Srv2) which has alot more space. No I would like to transfer all the data von Serv1 to Serv2 and have links to the new destination. I found mklink very useful here but unfortunately it does not work over the network. Which also points the docu out. People heavily rely on the path's so it would be helpful if somone has a pointer for me... how to handle symbolic links a cross the network with Windows Servers. • How do I catalog files on several external hard drives that I want to store off-line? OSX

  My partner, an artist, has more than 10 external hardisks both USB and firewire and every 2-3 months a new one has to be added (She's working with videos and pictures) currently its 10TB and growing so too much for a affordable NAS. Right now the files are not indexed and I think can not be searched with spotlight because not all drives can be connected at the same time. So if she wants to search for a file, she has to guess which disk/disks (based mostly on the date) and then search several drives. Now I'm looking for a solution to index/catalog the drives, something like GentibusCD Cathy Disclib (all these solutions are unfortunately Windows only) Is there any software for OSX that will catalog all the hard drives, so she can search the catalog, find the files, and get the ID of the disk / disk name that has the content? Preferably something with a GUI so my partner can also use it easily Preferably with Thumbnails for pictures/videos (But even an equivalent to "tree /F /A" would be better than nothing)

• How can I share files from my Windows 7 machine to my friend's Ubuntu machine?

  I run a Windows 7 Pro SP1 laptop as my home machine, and my housemate runs an Ubuntu 12.04.1.05 desktop. We share a WLAN. I would like to make certain locations and files available for him to read and maybe write. How can I go about this? Bearing in mind I have very little recent experience with modern Linux, and Ubuntu in particular. My first idea is to share a Windows folder with my Ubuntu VM under VMWare Player, then his Ubuntu machine can connect to my Unbuntu VM, and the two can use whatever magic Ubuntu uses to achieve file sharing. This requires my Ubuntu VM to be always running though, and that may not always be possible. I have also heard that Samba may have a feature to help here, but I know nothing about that. How can I share my Windows files with my mate's Ubuntu machine, preferably with a 1 to 1 connection, i.e. rather not using shim VM's

• Why does Public Folder share prompt for password even after I set "Turn off password protected sharing"

  I have a fileserver on a WORKGROUP which I have created a share on. I have turned on public folder sharing, file and printing sharing and set password protected sharing to off. When I try to share the folder by right clicking it and selecting proerties, then selecting sharing tab, then clicking the "share" button, then clicking share, it prompts me asking wether or not I want to turn on network discovery for public network, and after I say either yes or no, it says that my folder cant be shared. When I try to share via advanced sharing, then the folder is shared, and it's status is set to shared. However when I try to access this folder from a computer on the same network, it prompts me to enter a username and password. I am trying to setup a share for my VMware ThinApp packages that can be access no matter what domain the users are on.

  We have some email archiving that is dumping all the emails into a directory. Because of some performance reasons with the server, I want to setup an automated task that will run a script once a day and if there is more than 3,000 (or whatever number) of files in the main directory, create a new directory with the date and move all the main directory files into it.   I have an external HDD and I kind of messed up the file permissions but when fixing it I thought it is ok bc with my username I can access the files perfectly fine. Now that I use this with two PC (actually ATM I don't have access to my other PC) I can't access these files. The problem is this directory has hundreds of folders with no permission for "everyone". I would like to give it the default permissions including have all access for the user "everyone". How do I do that via command line for these hundreds of folders?

  I'm attempting to access logs from a proprietary hardware box with no reasonable hope of modifying the software. There is a process on the device to dump log files to a flash drive on the USB port after entering a code sequence. Currently, analysis of the logs requires the following: Physical presence at the device Manual entry of the code sequence Removal of USB device Insertion of USB device into a normal Linux box I'm hoping there is some sort of device that can act as a USB mass storage device but simultaneously make it's contents available as a network file share (wired preferred).   Need help according to scenario given: Client end PCs: 400 + Network : Server 1 (Linux) : 192.168.2.0/24 (For Application, Internet not working) GW: 192.168.2.1 Clients: 192.168.2.1 - 254 Server 2 (Linux) : 192.168.3.0/24 (For Internet users) GW: 192.168.3.1 Clients: 192.168.3.2 - 254 Server 2 is connected to DSL Broadband. Server 1 and Server 2 both are on same physical network i.e. Same switches. Current issue: i have to deploy a file and print server but this server will be accessed by both (192.168.2.x and 192.168.3.x) one same workgroup. as both subnets are on same switched network. Limitations: Currently there is no hardware routers and firewall. Need to complete this task with Linux / Windows / AD. Tested / Worked so far: Configured one PC with two NIC's With the IPS: NIC 1 : 192.168.3.2 GW: 192.168.3.1 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 NIC 2 : 192.168.2.2 GW: Empty Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Kindly provide any solution what should i do to get sharing enable on both Subnets. • Odd FTP ASCII/BINARY transfer behavior after migrating to a new server

  I recently got a dedicated server and after migration to the new machine I started noticing problems with file transfers. My FTP client, despite being set to auto, keeps uploading php files in binary mode and the content of those files is messed up. Since I mostly upload files of different kinds it would be annoying to change from binary to ASCII every single time, beside, I never had such problems. What could be the cause of this behavior? My dedicated server runs CENTOS 6.4 and the ftp server is Pure-FTPd. I tried different FTP clients and they all have the same problem so I assume is soem misconfiguration on the server side. Thanks

• Visual Studio 2010: Is it possible to force editor to use ANSI rather than UTF-8?

  I am having issues with some files in automated processes, specifically with batch files and sql files. Visual Studio seems to create these as UTF-8 rather than ansi and adds some kind of special characters to the beginning of the file (I think this is a called a pre-amble) This breaks running batch files and running swl files through osql.exe. I have had issues myself in the past in creating text files using C#, but can get around that through encoding. However its seems a bit strange I cant use Visual studio to create batch files and sql files in a database project for automation.

• How can I add metadata to NTFS files/folders?

  I want to tag different file types (i.e. .pdf, .epub, .iso, .bin, folders,..) using the same descriptive fields. For example i would like a metadata field "type" which would be "eBook" on pdf- and epub-files, "CD-Image" on iso- and bin-files. I read about Alternate Data Streams (ADS) to make this possible. Does anyone know a good program for Windows 7 to tag different files and search for them? It is important for me, that the metadata is NOT stored in a separate database. I move the files a lot and need to stay flexible (ADSs 'stick' to the files). Any ideas?
