• jQuery: Animated header plugin

  I'm looking for a jQuery plugin that can help me with the following: I have a list of images I want to use for my header but they are pretty big (height especially) and I don't want to resize them to fit my small header div. What I'd want is a plugin that allows the images to start at the bottom of the div (or rather the top of the image at the top of the div) and move upwards so the entire image can be seen, and once up they are shown entirely (bottom of image at bottom of div) they should "blend" (opacity toggle or something alike) with the next image and thus create a continuous loop with all the images. I've looked through several plugins but have never found one that can achieve what I'm looking for (maybe I'm asking for a tad too much) but my JS is not sufficient enough to build it myself. • Why shouldn't I use Flash?

  I heard many times i should avoid flash for my website. Yet no one has told me a good reason. I searched for reasons and i see many that are not true (such as text in flash are not indexable by search engines) or may not necessarily be true or significant enough (eating more bandwidth. Would a JS equivalent be bigger or smaller?). My site uses flash to playback sound (m4a). I dont have to worry about indexing, the back button not working, etc. But i have feeling there may be other reasons. What are reasons i shouldnt use flash on my website. I'll note one, the fact iphone/itouch and mobile devices does not support it. Not a big deal for most sites and is obvious. What are reason to avoid flash on my site?

• How do you set up your JScript (NOT JScript.NET) development environment?

  In my environment, if I create a class in JScript syntax: class test{ } and then save it to a file named "test.js" and run it with wscript, I get a Microsoft JScript "Syntax error" at line 1. However, if I simply, say, write a function: function getInput() { var wshell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell"); wshell.Popup ("Do you want to continue?"); return userInput } getInput() and run it the same way, it works. Hopefully, there is something fundamentally wrong with my class definition. If that is the case, I am excited to find out.

• Cross-Browser jQuery text-zoom implementation

  I've got some code to increase/decrease font size. This is giving me a headache because each browser seems to implement the $.css('font-size') differently (see jquery bug). The part that's really killing me, though, is that Firefox is scaling up okay, but when I use the scale down function below, it scales up. Webkit & IE are both working as expected. Any ideas on that? I put this in a fiddle here: http://jsfiddle.net/srQ3P/1/ where you can see it working as expected, and you can see it broken in firefox at the project page: http://cumberlandme.info/residents MAJOR EDIT Sorry, the issue is not the code, it's firefox buggy behavior. • Making JSON Feed Work Server to Server

  I have a JSON feed (which I don't directly control, I have to ask the server admins to update it), that is returning NULL, or otherwise not working when I try to access it from another server. The actual feed works fine, but I can't get it to work like a normal API. Why can I use Flickr, WhitePages, Twitter, etc's JSON APIs, but for: http://portlandoregon.gov/shared/cfm/json.cfm It returns NULL in the browser when using JS. If I call it on the same server, it's fine though. If this is a server issue, what do I ask the admins to change, and if this is a local (browser) based issue, what am I doing wrong for this one feed that works for every other JSON API?

  I'm just learning JS, trying to do things without jQuery, and I want to make something similar to this however I want to use an array of images instead of just the one. My image array is formed like this var image_array = new Array() image_array[0] = "image1.jpg" image_array[1] = "image2.jpg" And the canvas element is written like this. (Pretty much entirely taken from the Mozilla site) function draw() { var ctx = document.getElementById('canvas').getContext('2d'); var img = new Image(); img.src = 'sample.png'; img.onload = function(){ for (i=0;i<5;i++){ for (j=0;j<9;j++){ ctx.drawImage(img,j*126,i*126,126,126); } } } } It uses the image "sample.png" in that code but I want to change it to display an image from the array. Displaying a different one each time it loops. Apoligies if I've not explained this well.

  Based on the properties of the keydown event I would like to ascertain what the current charCode are? Example. For the keydown event when the NumPad0, D0, and Colon key is pressed I would like to know what the associated charcode is. Currently I have a map that contains the charcode associated with that keyCode or use the current if charCode is not specified. keyCode = { Colon: 186, D0: 48, NumPad0: 96, }; charCodes = { 186: 59, 96: 48, }; shiftCharCodes = { 186: 58, 48: 41 }; Also in certain cases the keyCodes are different accross browsers? Example. The keydown event has different keyCode values across browsers. Therefore I'd like that type of data to be in memory only and accessible to the whole app My questions: How do I use a global object in memory with GF? a. use a static variable object - for that I guess I need to make sure GF is running on only 1 JVM -- how to I configure GF to run on 1 jvm? b. use HttpContext - same as a. Before trying to get Varnish to play nice with Drupal I'm trying to just get Varnish to a PNG from cache.   Hey, I am creating a website in Ruby on Rails. I have a controller action that renders a view like so: def show time_left = Time.now.to_i - 3.hours.to_i @character = current_user.characters.find(params[:id]) respond_to do |format| format.html # show.html.erb format.xml { render :xml => @character } end end This is fine as it renders the show.html.erb as I like. I would like however to somehow pass time_left to the view as a Javascript variable as this value is use by a countdown JQuery plugin. I could put a javascript block on the page in the HTML and print a instance variable out like so: <script type="javascript"> $('#countdown').countdown('<%= @time_left =>')</script> But I would like to keep all my JS in a external file and off the page could anyone give some advice on how to implement this? • JQuery with SMARTY php

  This might seem a very noob question but I haven't found the answer yet. I have a header.tpl file which contains xhtml code. I want to and some java script to it using jquery. But my problem is that it simple doesn't happen what I tell it to do. Because the page hoster comiples php with SMARTY I had to make a small change to the block script, which was had the {literal} {/literal}. But the rest seems ok. Btw the jquery.js is on the same folder as the header.tpl. File header.tpl http://feupload.fe.up.pt/get/SQWJvybQkDCmjEG PS: I event replaced all the code by the getstarted tutorial on the jquery homepage and added the {literlar} {/literal} (otherwise it would give an error) and it steel didn't work

• JQuery cookie access has stopped working for GAE app

  I have a google app engine app that has been running for some time, and some javascript code that checks for a login cookie has suddenly stopped working. As far as I can tell, NO code has changed. The relevant code uses the jquery cookies plugin (jquery.cookies.2.2.0.min.js)... // control the default screen depending // if someone is logged in if( $.cookies.get('dev_appserver_login') != null || $.cookies.get('ACSID') != null ) { alert("valid cookie!") $("#inventory-container").show(); } else { alert("INvalid cookie!") $("#welcome-container").show(); } The reason for the two checks is that in the GAE SDK, the cookies are named differently. The production system uses 'ACSID'. This if statement works in the SDK and now fails 100% of the time in production. I have verified that the cookie is, in fact, present when I inspect the page. Thoughts?

• Is it better to echo javascript in raw format with php, or echo a script include that has been minif

  Hey guys quick question, I am currently echoing a lot of javascript that is based conditionally on login status and other variables. I was wondering if it would be better to simply echo the script include like <script type="text/javascript" src="javascript/openlogin.js"></script> that has been run through a minifying program and been gzipped or to echo the full script in raw format. The latter suggestion is messier to me but it reduces http requests while the latter would probably be smaller but take more cpu? Just wondering what some other people think. Thanks in advance for any advice.

  I would like to make a html/js widget that people can add to their blogs, sites etc. I have never made widgets before so I would like to hear what should be done and what not. For example, how do I make the styling? Inline, own css file or what is the best practise? I believe i cant use head and body stuff in it. What about h1, h2 etc?   I'm loading an html snippet via ajax to append to a div (I use jquery). In other browsers it seems that the code is not executed at all. Is there a solution for this?

Or is it better (and why) to do it like this: function method = function(){ return this.foo; } function A(){ this.foo = 1; this.method = method; } var a = new A(); Or are the javascript engines smart enough not to create a new 'method' function every time? Specifically Google's v8 and node.js. Also, any general recommendations on when to use which technique are welcome. In my specific example, it really suits me to use the first example, but I know thath the outer function will be instantiated many times.
