• Repeated host lookups failing in urllib2

  I have code which issues many HTTP GET requests using Python's urllib2, in several threads, writing the responses into files (one per thread). During execution, it looks like many of the host lookups fail (causing a name or service unknown error, see appended error log for an example). Is this due to a flaky DNS service? Is it bad practice to rely on DNS caching, if the host name isn't changing? I.e. should a single lookup's result be passed into the urlopen? • LINQ to XML: suppressing redundant namespace attribute in child nodes

  If a node belongs to a namespace, it's children by default belong to the same namespace. So there's no need to provide an xmlns attribute on each child, which is good. However. If I create two nodes like this: Dim parent = <parent xmlns="http://my.namespace.org"/> Dim child = <child xmlns="http://my.namespace.org">value</child> parent.Add(child) Console.WriteLine(parent.ToString) The result is this: <parent xmlns="http://my.namespace.org"> <child xmlns="http://my.namespace.org">value</child> </parent> But, if create them in a less convenient way: Dim parent = <parent xmlns="http://my.namespace.org"/> Dim child As New XElement(XName.Get("child", "http://my.namespace.org")) With {.Value = "value"} parent.Add(child) Console.WriteLine(parent.ToString) The result is more desirable: <parent xmlns="http://my.namespace.org"> <child>value</child> </parent> Obviously, I'd prefer to use the first way because it is so much more intuitive and easy to code. There's also another reason to not use method 2 -- sometimes I need to create nodes with XElement.Parse, parsing a string that contains an xmlns attribute, which produces exactly same results as method 1. So the question is -- how do I get the pretty output of method 2, creating nodes as in method 1? The only option I see is to create a method that would clone given XElement, effectively recreating it according to method 2 pattern, but that seems ugly. I'm looking for a more obvious solution I overlooked for some reason.

• Update PageTitle on Timer.Tick

  I've got a page with a Timer that is being used as a trigger on an UpdatePanel. The page also contains a TabContainer and several TabPanels. Look at this question for more information. Basically, I've got an UpdatePanel as the element in each TabPanel's ContentTemplate, and the UpdatePanel is triggered by the Timer. My page displays data by reading a database on each tick. I've got the following code running on each Timer.Tick in my codebehind: protected void timeRefresher_Tick(object sender, EventArgs e) { UpdateLivePageTitle(); } The UpdateLivePageTitle() function reads the new information from the database and sets Page.Title accordingly. However, this information is of course not sent to the browser because there is no full page postback--only an async postback to the update panels. As a result, my page title is not being updated until the whole page is being posted back, which destroys the purpose of using UpdatePanels in the first place. I figure there would be a way to do this by using the document.title JS element and call that from within UpdateLivePageTitle(). But as of now, I haven't been able to figure out how to do this. I tried using the following in my UpdateLivePageTitle() function: string updatePageTitleScript = String.Format("document.title = '{0}'", newPageTitle); ToolkitScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(this.Page, this.Page.GetType(), "UpdatePageTitle", updatePageTitleScript, true); But the result of this was that my TabContainer stopped rendering. I'm also not sure that would work with the async partial page postbacks, either. Any ideas? Thanks!

  My question is comparable to this one, but not quite the same. I have a database with a huge amount of books, with different editions of some of the same book titles. I'm looking for an SQL statement giving me the highest edition number of each of the titles I'm selecting with a WHERE clause (to find specific book series). • Need method to seek next/previous records id without cycling through all records.

  I am using MySQL and PHP. I have a MySQL blog post result set with id fields, and publish_date fields. I display one blog post per page, and the script knows which blog post to display based on $_GET['id'], which correlates to each blog entry's id field. I would like to reference them by id in the url, because I would like each blog post to have a perminant url. I would like to order the blog posts by publish date (descending). Now, on each page there will be next and previous links, which contain the $_GET['id'] value for the next and previous blog posts. How can I figure out what the id of the next and previous blog posts (determined by it's publish_date order) without cycling through each mysql result row? I can't mysql_data_seek(), because I do not know the row index of the current blog post id. I do not want to store a row index in a GET variable because the urls would no longer be perminant. I obviously cannot store the row index in a SESSION variable because then direct links to specific blog posts would have broken next and previous links. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

• Can JMX operations take interfaces as parameters?

  I'm having problems with an MBean that takes a Map<String, Object> as a parameter. If I try to execute it via JMX using a proxy object, I get an Exception: Caused by: javax.management.ReflectionException at org.jboss.mx.server.AbstractMBeanInvoker.invoke(AbstractMBeanInvoker.java:231) at org.jboss.mx.server.MBeanServerImpl.invoke(MBeanServerImpl.java:668) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke0(Native Method) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(NativeMethodAccessorImpl.java:39) at sun.reflect.DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.java:25) at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:597) Caused by: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Unable to find operation updateProperties(java.util.HashMap) It appears that it attempts to use the actual implementation class rather than the interface, and doesn't check if this is a child of the required interface. The same thing happens for extended classes (for example declare HashMap, pass in LinkedHashMap). Does this mean it's impossible to use an interface for such methods? At the moment I'm getting around it by changing the method signature to accept a HashMap, but it seems odd that I wouldn't be able to use interfaces (or extended classes) in my MBeans. Edit: The proxy object is being created by an in-house utility class called JmxInvocationHandler. • wxPython: MainLoop() seems to hang

  Hi all, my problem stems from the use of wxApp as far as I can tell. Inside a litte subroutine I call a wx.MessageDialog to ask for a yes or no. I retrieve the answer an process some stuff acordingly. My example code below actually works (though it might be ugly) except that the Dialog box stays open after hitting one of the buttons... import wx from os import path def HasFile(filename): if path.isfile(filename ): app = wx.App() dial = wx.MessageDialog(None, 'Die Datei "'+filename+'" wurde gefunden.\nSoll sie eingelesen werden?', 'Bitte antworten', wx.YES_NO | wx.YES_DEFAULT | wx.ICON_QUESTION) result = dial.ShowModal() dial.EndModal(retCode=0) dial.Destroy() app.MainLoop() return result == wx.ID_YES else: return False So while the rest of the program does whatever is expected, the box just sits there. It also seems like my calls to matplotlib later on are producing errors (a Tkinter error to be precise), maybe because of the wx stuff? Edit: I tried to end the app with a call to app.Destroy(). This doesn't change the fact that the box is still there. When I issue a app.IsActive() afterwards the whole program exits (almost like a sys.exit())! How come? Edit 2: Adding a wxApp like this isn't a good idea since the other scripts get affected as well. Subsequent plotting commands don't get displayed and I don't know how to fix this. Thus I decided to remove the DialogBox alltogether.

• Getting the full-name of the current user, returns an empty string (C#/C++)

  I try to get the full-name of the current log-in user (Fullname, not username). The following code C#, C++ works fine but on XP computers not connected to the Net, I get empty string as result if I run it ~20 minutes after login (It runs OK whithin the first ~20 minutes after login) A Win32 API (GetUserNameEx) is used rather that PrincipalContext since it PrincipalContext may takes up to 15 seconds when working offline. • Multithreading using pthread in C++ with shared variables

  I'm new to threading (and C/C++ for that matter), and I'm attempting to use multiple threads to access shared variables. In the main, I've created a variable char inputarray[100]; Thread 1: This thread will be reading data from stdin in 2 byte bursts, and appending them to the inputarray. (input by feeding a file in) Thread 2: This thread will be reading data 1 byte at a time, performing a calculation, and putting its data into an output array. Thread 3: This thread will be outputting data from the output array in 2 byte bursts. (stdout) I've attempted the input part and got it working by passing a struct, but would like to do it without using a struct, but it has been giving me problems. If I can get input down, I'm sure I'll be able to use a similar strategy to complete output. Any help would be greatly appreciated. • Adding up fractions in PHP

  I would like to create a loop that keeps adding a set fraction, here in my example 1/3, and which later I can check against for matches with integer values. Obviously when php adds 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 the result is 0.9999999, so i thought I could use the occasional round to help me, but this isn't working either. The idea that I had would be that .333 + .333 becomes .666 and that if rounded that would become .667, then + .333 and the result is 1.   I'm getting an error using Google Maps API V3 that I don't understand. My initial map displays just fine, but when I try to get directions, I get the following two errors: Error: The value of the property 'GUnload' is null or undefined, not a Function object Error: Unable to get value of the property 'setDirections': object is null or undefined I'm not using GUnload anywhere, so I don't understand why I'm getting that error. As far as the second error is concerned, it's as if something is wrong with the Directions service. • Terminate function on System.in .. possible?

  I am currently working on a project where I have to make an agent to interact with a server. Each 50ms, the server will receive the last thing I outputted to System.out and send me a new set of lines as a 'state' through the System.in printstream to analyze and send my next message to System.out. Also, if the server receives multiple outputs from me, it only regards the most recent one. .. As for my question: My program originally constructed a tree and then analyzed each leaf node to see which would be optimal, and then waited around for the next input, but I can recursively do a deeper tree search that would make my output 'better' (and again and again to keep returning a better result). Using this and the fact that if the server receives multiple outputs, it only takes the most recent one, I could do each level, print my result and start the next level. But here comes my problem... I can't be stuck in some complex algorithm while I am supposed to receiving the next input as I will then miss it. So I was wondering if there is a way to cancel anything else I am doing when I receive something via System.in and then go back to the beginning of the function and start the search again with the new set of input (and rinse and repeat..)   I'm attempting to get to grips with displaying filterable MySQL data within a PHP page based on user checkbox selections. I have a database of domain names and the dates on which these will require renewal as per Nominet DAC information and I can get unfiltered data to display, but filtering results by domain extensions is proving tricky for me to accomplish. I should point out at this stage that I am a serious newcomer to many of the ideas I am trying to learn to work with here, so please be gentle. • Does Socket open another thread? Does it return something?

  In the client application I call new Socket(serverIP,serverPort). As a result the client application sends a request to the server application to open a socket. Does it start a new thread? I mean which of the following is true? Client application sends a request and immediately starts to execute following commands (not weighting for the answer). Client sends the request and weights for the answer. As soon as the answer is obtained, the client application continues to execute following commands. The second case seems to be more realistic and logical for me. However, I do not understand what happens if the server does not open a socket and it does not say that it does not "want" to open the second (it can happen if the server does not exist or network is broken). What will happen in this case? Will server weight forever? In general it would be nice for the client to know what is the result of its request for the socket. For example I can imagine the following situations: The socket is opened by the server. The server refuses to open a socket. So, server exists, it got the request from the client but it says "no". There is no response from the server. I know that new Socket(serverIP,serverPort) does not "return" this kind of information. But it throws exceptions. One of them is "UnkownHostException". When it is thrown? When the server is not responding for a while (for how long)? ADDED: I just found out that UnknownHostException is thrown to indicate that the IP address of a host could not be determined. So, it is unrelated with the above described situations (server is not responding, server refuses to open a socket).

I see two main possibilities; Pass it using Dependency Injection on the constructor. Get it via a singleton Service Locator. Which method would you prefer, and why? Or is there an even better pattern? Update: Note that I don't need to log ALL method calls. I only want to log a few (rare) events that may or may not occur within my method.
