    I'm looking for help to create a query, to solve the following problem: Let's imagine the row: Name StartDate EndDate Payed James 10-10-2010 17-02-2011 860 Now I need a way to split this row up, so I can see what he pays every month, for his period, a query that returns: Name Year Month Payed James 2010 10 172 James 2010 11 172 James 2010 12 172 James 2011 01 172 James 2010 02 172 There are lots of different customers with different StartDate/EndDate and amount payed, so the query has to handle this aswell. How can I do this in SQL (MS SQL Server 2005)? Help will be much appreciated!

  • SQL Server database backup: Network Service file access

    When trying to run the following database backup command from my code I get an "Operating system error 5(Access is denied.)" error. This is because the log on account for the SQL Server Windows Service is 'Network Service' and that does not have access to right to this folder. BACKUP DATABASE [AE3DB] TO DISK = 'c:\AE3\backup\AE3DB.bak' My question is, from my code how would I go about figuring out where on the C drive 'Network Service' is allowed to right the backup to? NOTE: This is a distributed application so I cannot easily change the log on for the SQL Server Windows Service to the 'Local System' account that would be able to right to that folder.

    Hi I want to use a gridview with sorting and paging to display data from an SQL server, the query uses 3 joins and the full text search containstable. The from part of the query uses all 3 tables in the join. What is the best way to do this? I can think of a stored procedure, SQL directly in the SQLDataSource and creating a view in the database. I want good performance and would like to leverage the automatic sorting and paging features of the gridview as much as possible.

    I know similar questions have been asked, but I've not been able to find information specific to my situation. I'm looking for "continuing education"-type options, specifically a C# and/or SQL course. I'm a software engineering professional with a graduate level computer science degree. So I'm looking for something substantial that will be challenging. I certainly already have me feet wet in both C# and SQL I'm just looking for a more formal training to round out the edges. There is a good chance my company will pay for it if it is reasonably priced so it doesn't have to be free and preferably shouldn't be (a certificate or certification to come out of it would be nice). When I tried Google, all I found were things that sounded like crash courses (like a 3 day course or course for "dummies"), or course that did not seem very credible. Can anyone recommend a course of action for this? Thanks!

Is there a SQL technique to make this easy?

    SQL Server 2005 Standard 64x, with 300+ tiny databases currently (5MB each), user base adds databases as needed. Want to implement log shipping for warm standby, but not via the wizard, since that looks like it adds 3 jobs (1 on primary, 2 on secondary) for each log-shipped database. Do I try to write my own or use something like Quest's LiteSpeed? Or am I being too squeamish about having hundreds of SQL Server Agent jobs and all of them firing off (or worse, would I have to try to time them)? All advice welcome.

Say I have a database looking like this; Product with columns [ProductName] [Price] [Misc] [Etc] Order with columns [OrderID] [ProductName] [Quantity] [Misc] [Etc] ProductName is primary key of Product, of some string type and unique. OrderID is primary key and of some integer type, and ProductName being a foreign key. Say I change the primary key of Product to a new column of integer type ie [ProductID] Would this reduce the database size and optimize lookups joining these two tables (and likewise operations), or are these optimizations performed automatically by (most/general/main) SQL database implementations?

    Database server: SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.760 - SP3 - Standard Edition I have a table with 5 columns, in which I want to add a large (300.000) number of records. There is a unique index on the combination of two columns. If I add the records with this unique index in place, SQL Server gives this error message: Msg 2601, Level 14, State 3, Line 1 Cannot insert duplicate key row in object 'TESTTABLE' with unique index 'test'. The statement has been terminated. (0 row(s) affected) However, if I delete the unique index and then add the records, I do not get any error when I create this unique index afterwards.

    Hi, I have an application I’m writing in access with a SQL server backend. One of the most heavily used parts is where the users selects an answer to a question, a stored procedure is then fired which sees if an answer has already been given, if it has an UPDATE is executed, if not an INSERT is executed. This works just fine but now we have upgraded to SQL server 2008 express I was wondering if it would be better/quicker/more efficient to rewrite this SP to use the new MERGE command. Does anyone have any idea if this is faster than doing a SELECT followed by either an INSERT or UPDATE?

I get that .All() isn't supported by Linq to SQL, but is there a way to do what I am trying to do?

I'm trying to make a simple filter search where-by you can choose from a series of 3 drop downs and then based upon this the results are then displayed, How would I go about adjusting the sql query for each and if you were to only choose to search from aone of the 3 rather than all 3 etc... example there could be the url with input such as: url.com?location=gb&color=3&hair=4 and still form the correct sql query for something like this: url.com?location=gb&hair=1 and not encounter problems with WHERE and AND etc etc and empty variables in the statement Would this not need to be a massive function to check using if to see how the data is set for all possibilities?     Hey guys, so here's the deal. I have several databases (SqlServer 2005) on the same server with the same schema but different data. I have one extra database which has one table storing the names of the mentioned databases. So what I need to do is to iterate over those databases name and actually "switch" to each one (use [dbname]) and execute a T-SQL script. Am I clear? Let me give you an example (simplified from the real one): CREATE TABLE DatabaseNames ( Id int, Name varchar(50) ) INSERT INTO DatabaseNames SELECT 'DatabaseA' INSERT INTO DatabaseNames SELECT 'DatabaseB' INSERT INTO DatabaseNames SELECT 'DatabaseC' Assume that DatabaseA, DatabaseB and DatabaseC are real existing databases. So let's say I need to create a new SP on those DBs. I need some script that loops over those databases and executes the T-SQL script I specify (maybe stored on a varchar variable or wherever). Save the excel file as csv.(Using SaveAs XLCSV option) 2. Build a datatable "ABC" From CSV.(using ODBC Connection and Select * from '*'.csv command) 3. copy the datatable"ABC" into database table "xyz" (using sqlBulkCopy.WriteToServer()) It works fine without any error but when i checked my database i found that data type for some columns has been changed and hence it didn't copy some of the records.Any help would be appreciated

    I have recently linked a database to my C# service by creating a LINQ to SQL item in my solution. Everything was fine and dandy as I was continuing to code, but then I suddenly noticed that there where 16 Ambiguity errors. e.g. Ambiguity between 'EmailService.Properties.Settings.defaultInstance' and 'EmailService.Properties.Settings.defaultInstance' What happened was that the database file decided to create it's own Setting.Designer.cs; So now I have a Settings.Designer.cs and a Settings1.Designer.cs (which was created by the LINQ to SQL file) in my Properties folder. Is there anyway that I can change where the database file is referencing its settings so I can delete the duplicate?

    Hi everyone, I've got a problem with using for xml explicit in SQL Server 2000 (so I can't use the new path() stuff from sql 2005/8) Essentially I have two tables and the XML structure I want to have is <xml> <table_1 field1="foo" field2="foobar2" field3="foobar3"> <a_row_from_table_2 field1="goo" field2="goobar2" field3="goobar3" /> <a_row_from_table_2 field1="hoo" field2="hoobar2" field3="hoobar3" /> </table_1> </xml> That is, table_1 has a one-to-many relationship with table_2, and I want to make a hierarchy of it. So far I can't seem to get it, the closest I've managed to get is all the records from table1, with all the records from table2 appended to the very last element of table1 Any help with setting up this kind of relationship would be greatly appreciated. -Marcin
