  Having installed Team Foundation Server 2010 on Windows Server 2008, I need an easy URL for our developers to access their repositories. The default URL for the TFS repositories is http://localhost:8080/tfs Now I want the subdomain domain tfs.server.domain.com to point at http://localhost:8080/tfs. And when you access tfs.server.domain.com/repos_name it should redirect to http://localhost:8080/tfs/repos_name. How can I do this in IIS7? I already tried using the following rule, but it does not work. • TFS Build Server Cannot find Assembly Reference

  I looked at this post http://stackoverflow.com/questions/547468/assembly-references-wont-resolve-properly-on-our-build-server but it didn't help the issue. I am (extremely) new to TFS, and just installed 2010 on a VM. I imported a project and got everything working-ish. I went to create a new build through team explorer, and set it up to build on each check-in. It build's locally just fine, but when it's built on check-in it dies on a 3rd party assembly reference. The reference is not in the GAC, but part of the local references. There is only one 3rd party dll, and the projects only reference each other in the solution. I have a feeling I'm missing some important step with regards to TFS and references. Any ideas? EDIT: This a test installation...there is nothing else installed on this box, with the exception of SQL and IIS.

  Hello, any good approach for managing assembly version numbers in TFS, possibly together with using the same number for the build number? I would be most interested in an approach that: Maintains the first three elements of the version Counts the rest upward for every "official" build (i.e. a build originating from certain templates only - no need to count up for something like a gated checkin, but the following regular integration build SHOULD count up. Labels the builds, so that a manual "release" build can be triggered. Any solution? How are other people handling this? Right now the (new) TFS is happily building with the same assembly version all around ;) Something coding the complete assembly version with date etc. is not acceptable - I want that number to "follow rules", and having the date in there is not one of them ;)

• TFS no release folder in build folder

  I have a tfs build that works fine on the client, but when executed on the server, no actual binaries get created. When I go to the folder: \[MyServer]\builds[BuildName], I see BuildLog.txt ErrorsWarningsLog.txt Release.txt I expect to see a big \Release folder full of my dlls, but I get nothing. The error log reports no problems up until we ask the build to copy the binaries to our staging server. If I comment those out, I get no errors. CustomizableOutDir is true, DropLocation is set to something sensible BuildDirectoryPath is set to something sensible But no matter what, I just don't get any dlls built. Our local TFS guy is baffled too. Any suggestions?

So I have now got my project in source control. But when I check in I get references to a number of files that I no longer use. How do I remove files from the TFS Source Control repository? So in the example below you can see lots of files from different projects that I do not want to see.

• Hudson on debian lenny

  Hello, I installed Hudson deamon on one server (running on debian lenny testing) some time ago. All was working until I perform an upgrade. At this time Hudson isn't accessible at port 8080 (which is the default port used). I have looked for iptables problems, however port 8080 is open in INPUT and OUTPUT. Configuration file in /etc/default/hudson seems okay, I haven't touch it. And if I do a ps aux | grep hudson, hudson deamon is running.   Hi, I've implemented everything and checked everything (SPF, DomainKey, DKIM, reverse lookup), and only Gmail is allowing my emails to go to Inbox. The teams would never stop improving the Sample Browser for developers’ easier lives.   The Microsoft All-In-One Code Framework, Visual Studio and MSDN Samples Gallery teams are working closely to develop the next version of Sample Browser.  Here are the key functions in development or in discussion.  We hope to learn your feedback of the effort.  You can submit your suggestions to the official Visual Studio UserVoice site.  We look forward to hearing from you! 1) Offline Sample Search This is one of the top feature requests that we have received for Sample Browser.   The Sample Browser will support the offline search mode so that developers can search downloaded code samples when they do not have internet access.  This is particularly useful to developers in Enterprises with strict proxy settings. 2) Code Snippet Support and Visual Studio Editor Integration Today, the Sample Browser supports downloading and opening sample project.   However, when developers are searching for code samples, a better user experience would be to see the code snippets in the search result first.  Developers can quickly decide if the code snippet is relevant.   They can also drag and drop the code snippet into the Visual Studio Editor to solve some simple programming tasks.  If developers want to learn more about the sample, they can then choose to download the sample project and open it in Visual Studio. 3) Enterprise Sample Sharing and Searching Large enterprises have many code samples for their own internal tools and APIs that are not appropriate to be shared publicly in MSDN Samples Gallery.   In that case, today’s Sample Browser and MSDN Samples Gallery cannot help these Enterprise developers.  The idea is to create a Code Sample Repository in TFS, and provide an additional Visual Studio extension for Enterprise developers to quickly share code samples to TFS.  The Sample Browser can be configured to connect to the TFS Code Sample Repository to search for and download code samples.  This would potentially enable the Enterprise developers to be more productive. 4) Windows Store Sample Browser With the upcoming release of Windows RT and Microsoft Surface, developers are facing a completely new world of application platform.   Not like laptop, people would often use Microsoft Surface in commute and in travel.  Internet may not be available.  Today’s Visual Studio cannot be installed and run on Windows RT, however, our enthusiastic developers would hope to spend every minute on code.  They love code!   The idea is to create a Windows Store version of Sample Browser. Search and download samples from the online Samples Gallery when the user has internet access. Browse the sample code files and learn the sample documentation of downloaded samples with or without internet access.   In addition to the "browse” function, the Sample Browser could further support “bookmark”, “learning notes”, “code review”, and “quick social sharing". Make full use of the new touch and Windows Store App UI to give developers a new “relaxing” code browsing and learning experience, anytime, anywhere. With Windows Store Sample Browser, developers can enjoy A new relaxing and enjoyable experience for developers to learn code samples You do not have to sit in front of desk and formally open Visual Studio to read code samples.  Many developers get sub-health due to staying in front of desk for a very long time.  With Windows RT, Microsoft Surface and this Windows Store Sample Browser combining with the online MSDN Samples Gallery, developers can sit in a sofa, relaxingly hold the tablet and enjoy to learn their beloved sample code with detailed documentation. • Visual Studio 2010 Winform Application &ndash; Unable to resolve custom assemblies?

  Recently I surfaced a problem where, one of my friend had a tough time in getting rid of an assembly reference error.  Despite adding reference to the assembly, while referencing it in code, it was spitting out the “The type or namespace name ‘ASSEMBLYNAME’ could not be found” error.   This was a migration project and owing to the above error, it was throwing another 100 errors. We tried adding reference to the assembly in other projects and it was not even resolving the namespace while typing out in the using section. Upon further digging into the error warnings, it indicated something to do with the .NET Framework targeted i.e. 4.0.  My suspicion grew since the target framework was 4.0 and the assembly should be able to be recognized.  Then, when we checked “Project – “<APPNAME> Properties…”, the issue was with the default target framework which is “.NET Framework 4 Client Profile” By default, Visual Studio 2010 creates Windows Forms App/WPF Apps with the Target Framework set to .NET Framework 4 Client Profile.  This is to minimize the framework size required to be bundled along with the app. Client Profile is new feature since .NET 3.5 SP1 that allows users to package a minified version of .NET Framework that doesn’t include stuff such as ASP.NET, Server programming assemblies and few other assemblies which are typically never used in the Desktop Applications. Since the .NET Framework client profile is a minified version, it doesn’t contain all the assemblies related to Web services and other deprecated assemblies.  However, this application is a migration app and needed some of the references from Services and hence couldn’t run. Once, we changed the Target Framework to .NET Framework 4 instead of the default client profile, the application compiled. • Issue While uploading a image to share point 2010 picture library.

  I was trying to upload a image to my picture library using sharepoint client object model. I Used the code from the below blog to upload a file to my picture library. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sridhara/archive/2010/03/12/uploading-files-using-client-object-model-in-sharepoint-2010.aspx The image got uploaded sucessfully. But when we took the relative url to update in a different list, we were getting empty image symbol. After a lot of analysis we figured out that the issue was with the file we uploaded. An image file which is of jpeg quality was uploaded to an application with giff extension. Try this. Copy a JPG file from net and save it to your file system. Change the extension of the file from jpg to giff. When you change the file extension the image quality remains same but it will open in picture viewers. Upload the file to your picture library. Once uploaded you will get the file listed as thumbail in your picture library. Click on the thumbnail image it will open up a page showing a larger image with file details. Now click either on the image or the file name hyper link, it will open up an empty page with default no image symbol. I wasted a lot of time on this figuring out the issue, so thought of sharing here. Hope this helps some one.

• Workspace.PendEdit not checking out files

  I'm using the TFS 2010 SDK to programmatically check in edits to files into TFS 2010. The documentation on the TFS 2010 SDK is sparse at best. When I call the method workspace.pendedit() passing in an array of files I want to mark as having a pending edit, nothing is actually checked out. So when I call workspace.checkin() passing in workspace.getpendingchanges and some comments I get an exception that there must be at least one thing that has a pending change (which should be what I passed into pendedit). Any thoughts on why the app isn't marking the files as having a pending edit in the workspace?

• Database hidden in SQL Server

  During an aborted TFS import (2008 into 2010), I have managed to "lose" a database in 2008. The database is not visible in Management Studio, but the SQL Server exe has a handle on the .mdf file (according to UnLocker), it says it cannot attach it because the file is in use and it cannot attach a copy of the file (created when SQL Server was stopped), as it says a DB of the same name is already attached. Given I am using the same TFS admin account I have always used and have always been able to see the database in, why is this database missing and, more importantly, how do I get it back again?

Right now i am using two separate queries : One to get the sum of the amount and commission grouped by the hotel name. The next is to get the individual row for each entry having that date in the table. This is, of course, because grouping the records for calculating sum() returns only one row for each of the hotel with the sum of the amounts... Is there a way to combine these two queries into a single one and do the operation in a more optimized way...?? Hope i am being clear.. Thanks for your time and replies...

• Can Visual Studio 2010 do ".inc" file syntax highlighting?

  Can Visual Studio 2010 be configured to do syntax highlighting on ".inc" files? We have numerous large projects with tons of these ".inc" files (asp files) and so changing the file extension to ".asp" is not an option. All I want Visual Studio 2010 to do is treat these ".inc" files just like ".asp" files when it comes to syntax highlighting. I've tried "Open With..." and selected the HTML Editor, which is the ".asp" default, but that did not work. I tried about every other editor in the list and none of them worked. I know Notepad++ (among others) can do this, but I would prefer this be done in Visual Studio 2010 - using another IDE or text editor is not the answer I'm looking for here. Many many thanks to anyone who knows how to configure VS 2010 to do this, I've wasted soooo much time looking for a way to do this. Even registry hacks are welcome. • Using the Data Form Web Part (SharePoint 2010) Site Agnostically!

In SharePoint 2007 it was very easy and this blog pointed the way to make it happen: Josh Gaffey's Blog. In SharePoint 2010 something changed! This method failed except for using a Data Form Web Part that pointed to a list in the Site Collection Root! I am making this discussion relative to a developer whom creates a solution (WSP) with all the artifacts embedded and the user shouldn’t have any involvement in the process except to activate features. The Scenario: 1. A Power User creates a Data Form Web Part using SharePoint Designer 2010! It is a great web part the uses all the power of SharePoint Designer and XSLT (Conditional formatting, etc.). 2. Other Users in the site collection want to use that specific web part in sub sites in the site collection. Pointing to a list with the same name, not at the site collection root! The Issues: 1. The Data Form Web Part Data Source uses a List ID (GUID) to point to the specific list. Which means a list in a sub site will have a list with a new GUID different than the one which was created with SharePoint Designer! Obviously, the List needs to be the same List (Fields, Content Types, etc.) with different data. 2. How can we make this web part site agnostic, and dependent only on the lists Name? I had this problem come up over and over and decided to put my solution forward! The Solution: 1. Use the XSL of the Data Form Web Part Created By the Power User in SharePoint Designer! 2. Extend the OOTB Data Form Web Part to use this XSL and Point to a List by name. The solution points to a hybrid solution that requires some coding (Developer) and the XSL (Power User) artifacts put together in a Visual Studio SharePoint Solution. Here are the solution steps in summary: 1. Create an empty SharePoint project in Visual Studio 2. Create a Module and Feature and put the XSL file created by the Power User into it a. Scope the feature to web 3. Create a Feature Receiver to Create the List. The same list from which the Data Form Web Part was created with by the Power User. a. Scope the feature to web 4. Create a Web Part extending the Data Form Web a. Point the Data Form Web Part to point to the List by Name b. Point the Data Form Web Part XSL link to the XSL added using the Module feature c. Scope The feature to Site i. This is because all web parts are in the site collection web part gallery. So in a Narrative Summary: We are creating a list in code which has the same name and (site Columns) as the list from which the Power User created the Data Form Web Part Using SharePoint Designer. We are creating a Web Part in code which extends the OOTB Data Form Web Part to point to a list by name and use the XSL created by the Power User. Okay! Here are the steps with images and code! At the end of this post I will provide a link to the code for a solution which works in any site! I want to TOOT the HORN for the power of this solution! It is the mantra a use with all my clients! What is a basic skill a SharePoint Developer: Create an application that uses the data from a SharePoint list and make that data visible to the user in a manner which meets requirements! Create an Empty SharePoint 2010 Project Here I am naming my Project DJ.DataFormWebPart Create a Code Folder Copy and paste the Extension and Utilities classes (Found in the solution provided at the end of this post) Change the Namespace to match this project The List to which the Data Form Web Part which was used to make the XSL by the Power User in SharePoint Designer is now going to be created in code! If already in code, then all the better! Here I am going to create a list in the site collection root and add some data to it! For the purpose of this discussion I will actually create this list in code before using SharePoint Designer for simplicity! So here I create the List and deploy it within this solution before I do anything else. I will use a List I created before for demo purposes. Footer List is used within the footer of my master page. I’ll use a new Site Collection for this demo (Best Practice) keep old artifacts from impinging on development: Next we will add this list to the root of the site collection by deploying this solution, add some data and then use SharePoint Designer to create a Data Form Web Part. The list has been added, now let’s add some data: Okay let’s add a Data Form Web Part in SharePoint Designer. Create a new web part page in the site pages library: I will name it TestWP.aspx and edit it in advanced mode: Let’s add an empty Data Form Web Part to the web part zone: Click on the web part to add a data source: Choose FooterList in the Data Source menu: Choose appropriate fields and select insert as multiple item view: Here is what it look like after insertion: Let’s add some conditional formatting if the information filed is not blank: Choose Create (right side) apply formatting: Choose the Information Field and set the condition not null: Click Set Style: Here is the result: Okay! Let’s check our features and package: DataFormWebPart should be scoped to site and have the web part: The Footer List feature should be scoped to web and have the Assets module (Okay, I see, a spelling issue but it won’t affect this demo) If everything is correct we should be able to click a couple of sub site feature activations and have our list and web part in a sub site.   Hi all: I have a php script that updates a database via an api. This script works on one server but not on another. Both servers have curl enabled and they have php 5.2.6 or above. The error happens in the do_put() method. The rest of the script seems to be fine. • Is the Subversion 'stack' a realistic alternative to Team Foundation Server?

  I'm evaluating Microsoft Team Foundation Server for my customer, who currently uses Visual SourceSafe and nothing else. They have explicitly expressed a desire to implement a more rigid and process-driven environment as their application is in production and they have future releases to consider. The particular areas I'm trying to cover are: Configuration management (e.g., source control) Change management (workflow and doco for change requests, tasks) Release management (builds and deployments) Incident and problem management (issues and bugs) Document management (similar to source control, but available via web) Code analysis constraints on check-ins A testing framework Reporting Visual Studio 2008 integration TFS does all of these things quite well, but it's expensive and complex to maintain, and the inexpensive Workgroup edition doesn't scale. We don't get TFS as part of our MSDN subscription. Those problems can be overcome, but before I tell my customer to go the TFS route, which in itself isn't a terrible thing, I wanted to evaluate the alternatives. I know Subversion is often suggested for its configuration management/source control, but what about the other areas? Would a combination of Subversion/NUnit/Wiki/CruiseControl/NAnt/something else satisfy all of these requirements? What tools do I need to include in my evaluation? Or should I just bite the bullet and go with TFS since we're already invested in the Microsoft stack?

• Simple MSBuild Configuration: Updating Assemblies With A Version Number

  When distributing a library you often run up against versioning problems, once facet of which is simply determining which version of that library your client is running.  Of course, each project in your solution has an AssemblyInfo.cs file which provides, among other things, the ability to set the Assembly name and version number.  Unfortunately, setting the assembly version here would require not only changing the version manually for each build (depending on your schedule), but keeping it in sync across all projects.  There are many ways to solve this versioning problem, and in this blog post I’m going to try to explain what I think is the easiest and most flexible solution.  I will walk you through using MSBuild to create a simple build script, and I’ll even show how to (optionally) integrate with a Team City build server.  All of the code from this post can be found at https://github.com/srkirkland/BuildVersion. Create an MSBuild file What we want from the build script (for now) is basically just to have the common assembly version number changed via a parameter (eventually to be passed in by the build server) and then for the project to build.  Also we’d like to have a flexibility to define what build configuration to use (debug, release, etc). Configure the build server (TeamCity) Of course you are not really going to want to run a build command manually every time, and typing in incrementing version numbers will also not be ideal.  A good solution is to have a computer (or set of computers) act as a build server and build your code for you, providing you a consistent environment, excellent reporting, and much more.  One of the most popular Build Servers is JetBrains’ TeamCity, and this last section will show you the few configuration parameters to use when setting up a build using your MSBuild file created earlier.  If you are using a different build server, the same principals should apply. First, when setting up the project you want to specify the “Build Number Format,” often given in the form <major>.<minor>.<revision>.<build>.  In this case you will set major/minor manually, and optionally revision (or you can use your VCS revision number with %build.vcs.number%), and then build using the {0} wildcard.  Thus your build number format might look like this: 2.0.1.{0}.  During each build, this value will be created and passed into the $BUILD_NUMBER variable of our Build.proj file, which then uses it to decorate your assemblies with the proper version. After setting up the build number, you must choose MSBuild as the Build Runner, then provide a path to your build file (Build.proj).  After specifying your MSBuild Version (equivalent to your .NET Framework Version), you have the option to specify targets (the default being “Go”) and additional MSBuild parameters.  The one parameter that is often useful is manually setting the configuration property (/p:Configuration="Release") if you want something other than the default (which is Debug in our example).  Your resulting configuration will look something like this: [Under General Settings] [Build Runner Settings]   Now every time your build is run, a newly incremented build version number will be generated and passed to MSBuild, which will then version your assemblies and build your solution.   A Quick Review Our goal was to version our output assemblies in an automated way, and we accomplished it by performing a few quick steps: Move the common assembly information, including version, into a linked CommonAssemblyInfo.cs file Create a simple MSBuild script to replace the common assembly version number and build your solution Direct your build server to use the created MSBuild script That’s really all there is to it.  You can find all of the code from this post at https://github.com/srkirkland/BuildVersion. In Enterprise Manager Database Control with Oracle Database 10.2.0.4 and 10.2.0.5, the root certificate used to secure communications via the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol will expire on 31-Dec-2010 00:00:00. The certificate expiration will cause errors if you attempt to configure Database Control on or after 31-Dec-2010. Existing Database Control configurations are not affected by this issue. Likelihood of Occurrence What Versions Are Affected? The issue impacts configuration of Database Control with Oracle Database 10.2.0.4 and 10.2.0.5 only.
